I think the question "What if everyone did it?" is a lot more relevant in terms of how you behave in public. What if everyone who grocery shops samples the grapes? What if everyone flying on a plane fails to turn their cell phone off? What if everyone in a waiting room has loud a conversation on their cell phone? What if everyone returns used cosmetics to the store? What if everyone walks across the street when the Do Not Cross sign is lit? What if everyone litters?

the answer, "I will help out if no one else will" gives off a particularly cynical tone. If the best ethical decisions are motivated by benevolence, how does this fit in?
