After listening to many, I find myself almost always coming back to hear the GREAT ANNA MOFFO! What a great shame it was that the critics simply could not give her the tremendous credit she deserved while she was alive to know it. She's written that she was alone a lot and lonely. A few kind words would have helped her as well as motivated her. However, somehow she sang as divinely as I've ever heard any soprano...sang her heart out! I believe I will be hearing her sing with the angels!
@kasha1932 You are so right.I fully agree that Anna is here at her very, very best.Of all the versions I've heard this one is for me the absolute top.I also come back to her version every time(like many other Moffo-aria's)
I rather don't compare, but there is no doubt that Moffo was one of the best soprano's ever,if not THE best.
How grateful I am to have heard this beautiful woman sing so many wonderful roles. At first, a little shrill but the voice matured as she did and now she ranks among the very great. Would have thrilled to have heard a complete Il Trovatore. Having heard Milanov in the role, I now have too loves to please my soul and ears with this aria I cherish above all. Wonderful!
I'm in tears...Can't help it when I hear certain places in this aria where the great Anna Moffo aims to the stratosphere with such ease, and then more with such lovely tenderness...several places, but I love 3:46 and 4:16 through my tears... Then...dear Anna Comes down from the stratosphere in her "gloriffic" bel canto.....such a tremendous range that just makes me shake my head with wonder! Oh Anna,,, I do wish you had lived long enough to enjoy all your praises!
Sensational singing! I also "discovered" Moffo via YouTube and not sure why she's not acclaimed as one of the great postwar American singers? The voice is certainly as gorgeous as Caballe's for instance, matched by the gorgeous line, the diction..
If one can search for that something special which separates Anna Moffo from others, It certainly would be that she was the most beautiful of opera heroines .
I remember seeing her American debut in Chicago in1957. It was La Boheme with Bjorling, and Serafin conducting. This is from a RCA recording from the 60s.
What happened at the end??? Did she get confused and forget the notes and improvise???? It's very sospir-like, but not quite in keeping with the rest of the music. Anyone know what happened here?? Did she always sing it that way???
@andrecooper555 I do not know. But I know Estelle Liebling published a huge collection of cadenzas in the early 20th Century, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's from that.
This shows the results of going to Italy to finish studying up! Very, very much Italian in style. The piece really shows up her coloratura COLORATURA! BRAVissima, Anna! Mere words cannot describe what I am hearing.....straight from ABOVE!
Signori, andate a teatro, anche nei più illustri e ditemi se oggi trovate un soprano con questa vocalità, con questa tecnica e con la grazia che , purtroppo per noi aveva e che ora non c'è più
Just noticed 16.250 viewers. 80 positive reactions and...2 negative. How on earth can you give this absolute masterwork of Anna Moffo a negative remark. It is the best interpretation of Leonore I have ever heard. Pity that also those who don't know a thing about classical music can give their opinion. But what a fantastic comment of SiEtln a year ago! (Sat behind the monitor for half an hour after Anna stopped singing....)Thát is the only possible remark! Thanks.
Today 9 march 2010, exactly on the day (9 march 2006) four years ago when this prima donna passed away.....But she is still around us and will be thanks to so many records and the benefit of the youtube contributions. Sschimel thanks for posting. This brilliant singer will not be forgotten!
I re-discovered Anna Moffo about a year ago here on Youtube - and it has been the most constant and satisfying love affair ever since. forget the past(whether she ever sang Leonora) and just revel in what has got to be the most glorious versions of this amazing Verdi aria. and the D flat...i need it every day!!!!
An awful lot of singers sing arias from roles they wouldn't necessarily sing on stage. That practice goes back much further than Moffo. And it continues to this day. And it will continue as long as records are made. As a singer with a lyric baritone, there are a lot of Verdi arias, for instance, that I can sing in a recital situation, from roles I would never dare in their entirety.
This aria can be sung well even by a lighter voice especially on records wg
Galli-Curci but on stage a heavier more voluminous sound is needed. Certainly not a Gilda. Sutherland and Callas sang Leonora, Gilda and Violeett on stage but they are exceptions and had larger voice than Moffo does. Moffo is fine for this here especially as it is in the studio,
It 's superb voiced and coloured. But could have she done the whole role on stage? Well June Anderson did (and she is not a spinto), but as I have not heard Moffo on stage I can't make myself an idea.
Some says that Trovatore is a part from Verdi's trilogy, and requires the same voice that Rigoletto and Traviata. I don't know...
I think she could have done the complete role. I would love to have heard her sing Tacea La Notte and Di tale amor, not to mention the cabaletta from this and the Miserere.
I wouldn't agree that Lenora requires the same voice as Violetta and Gilda, and in my humble opinion I am not sure it would have been advisable for Moffo to do the role on stage, but I must agree she sings the aria in a surprisingly remarkable way!
@isabella1954able: many coaches at the Paris Opera. Verdi's Rigoletto, Traviata & Trovatore are a kind of trilogy, with belcanto ways. Je ne crois pas trop à l'idée qu'il faille trois voix, Ponselle n'avait pas trois voix, Callas, Sutherland, Caballé, Scotto non plus. Il faut un coloratura dramatique.
Thanks. Haven't heard this in almost 20 years, but I've always remembered how Moffo sang this... so stunningly gorgeous, italianate, and very, very Leonora. I think her version is neglected when speaking of the best singers of this aria. Brava.
Stunning. Superb.Impeccably. Best version ever. Moffo at her very best. How nice to read only glorious comments. She deserves it. For me Moffo was always one of the greatests, if not the greatest. If this is a 1965/66 recording and born in 1932, she was only 33/34
yrs of age. Thank you for posting and thank you for the brilliant photos. Please don't remove!!! Let us enjoy this as long as possible. From the Netherlands greetings to you all.

perfect weight style and technique for this defining role- on a par with caballe's recording of this aria plus D flat placed impeccably!superb bel canto singing A+
If you listen to all of the Verdi arias as a complete album, you really see a portrait of a perfect Verdi soprano. She could have sung Ballo, Vespri, and Giovanna on stage. And Don Carlo, I think.
This performance is on a par with Ponselle & Tebaldi. Just so moving, the trills in place and love the way she sores up to that top "D" flat. Stunning.
La Moffo was a wonderful singer! We see the charachter of Leonora very well.
Very gorgeaous voice and magnificent technique, the trilli are beautiful.
I like to imagine an edition with Bergonzi and Panerai.
Nevertheless La Moffo was absolutly magnificent!

@flicfan416 ---- As one who has been around for a while and heard most -one rarely goes or is
very careful in attending - all depends on singers - it is in a sad state

@dziady1 Right, so how can you even call this shrill when the average singer these days is 1000 times worse?
flicfan416 5 months ago
@flicfan4 One great singer even at the end of a great career is Ewa Podles , one goes to hear her hoping
the rest of the cast can remotely reflect her standards . Damru also - - To compare Ms . Moffo with singers
far worse , does not make her any better ,
