Mary Fisher kept her mom drugged up in a retirement home to keep MOM out of the way to keep up her allusions.

MF's mom wanted to bring MF back down to earth. MF puts on a lot of airs but she has a humble background. As her mom pointed out in an earlier scene Mary's father was a kosher butcher from Hoboken, New Jersey!

Finally and this is not in the film but a personal observation, many mom/daughter relationships are competitive and filled with tension.
