he fucking ruined a classic song. what's wrong with you people? he won't ever pay tribute to modest mouse by being such a contrived uninspired wannabe. moz would hang his head down in shame. wake up kids! listen to the originals. don't buy into it.
I've never seen the word faggot spelled like fagot. Faggot is the correct way.
Anywho, Jesse Lacey is a wonderful artist and I think brand new sounds fine live. Badass cover. I disagree that he has to cover modest mouse to sound good; his own music is fucking genius and has made him a pretty successful man, quite obviously.
@grumblez Wow, I'm sorry if my honest opinion upsets you. I didn't know you were so in love with Jesse Lacey that you would take a criticism of his band as a personal attack on you. Deja Entendu is one of my all time favorite albums, but when I went to see their live show it was an incredible disappointment. They weren't good; they sucked, one of the worst mainstream live shows I've ever been to. But I guess since you love Lacey so much, you would be the fagot, not me. + You spelled fagot wrong.
I saw brand new when the sold out Wembley Arena and they seemed pretty awesome live to me. Little crowd interaction compared to people like Tegan and Sara, but sound wise was spot on.
@MikeGasm When I saw them they tried a lot of rearrangements, which I like to see at shows if it's done well, but they sounded sloppy. Especially Lacey, he was out of tune, off pitch and singing the lyrics differently. I get trying out new things and mixing it up for concerts, but if it sucks just stick to the album version. Maybe he was too drunk or having a bad night but Vendetta Red, who opened for them was the highlight of the evening. This was around '03 or '04.
After seeing the stuff this guy covers it makes me want to give Brand New's music a chance. I always wrote it off as shite without giving it a chance.
@lifetisbutadream you've probably already check out Brand New's music, but anyway if you are looking for something more like the stuff he covers check out the last two albums (The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me and Daisy) instead of the first two.
Jesse Laceys influences are from the roots of music like Steven Morriseys, Isaac Brocks and Jeff Mangums. People who says he sucks or his music sucks might as well say that The Smiths, Modest Mouse, and Neutral Milk Hotel sucks. Jesse can go up on stage and play whatever he wants, you know why? Because he plays music that he likes. If he wants to cover a MM song or a NMH song he can and will! The man's a true musician. The most modest, inspiring, true musician I know.
meh modest mouse version is better, this guy is a typical "ohh the girls love me when i do songs in acoustic", i mean i respect you covering MM, and its not that bad of a job, but Modest mouse def does it better, and i had to look this up after seeing some smhuck leaving a comment on a MM video of this saying this guy "made the song listenable" which really... he justs make more EMO-tional sounding, i really enjoy the Modest mouse version cause it has all the parts to it, not just the guitar
@maniaksixone Dude. This isn't just "this guy", this guy is Jesse Lacey, the lead singer of Brand New. Brand New is amazing, and Jesse Lacey's song writing is amazing, and almost every MM song is amazing as well.
@maniaksixone actually when i saw them live they covered a few neutral milk hotel songs with the full band as much as they can get. what happens a lot of the time with them is that jesse learns a lot of cover songs so he might have been the only one who knew the thing the whole way through.
brand new has the most unique songs iv'e ever heared,i know that he didnt wrote this one but he wrote great other songs and he sings this one better than the original of modest mouse in my opinion
Before Trailer Trash was recorded on The Lonesome Crowded West, on more than one occasion Isaac morphed lines from his other songs into it. Supposedly there are recorded versions of it respectively as well.
I may be arriving a little late to this argument. However, I felt that this needed to be said. Videos are placed on youtube for entertainment and personal enjoyment. It rules that you guys have opinions, just please keep in mind that no one gives a god damn. No offense to anyone but I along with countless other people are not interested "Grantmwalker" in your review of this song, it's irrelevant and unnecessary. I clicked on the link to hear the song not your remarks or criticism.
There's also a version of the boy who blocked his own shot where he sings the chorus to trailer trash in place of the last chorus. it fits perfectly well if you sing it, as well as Yellow by Coldplay
@hollym0rgan yeah this is actually pretty good. but jesse has a tendency of sucking. and all he's doing is playing chords and singing, hes not being creative or add shit to the song. some youtube posters have way better covers that they really create the song into their own.
modest mouse > brand new
sorry, its true brand new is inspired by modest mouse, not the other way around.
@schwipschwap i would say brand new is definately influenced by modest mouse but i wouldnt say they are close to the same. i would say their sounds are completely different and that they are both greattttt
Check out Sun Kil Moon... Extremely original Modest Mouse covers... Probably the best Modest Mouse covers out there... He/They did a whole album of them called "Tiny Cities"... One of my favorite albums of all time. It's beautiful and sounds NOTHING like Modest Mouse... It's all in open tunings, finger picked... Absolutely gorgeous.
I've never listened to Brand New, but I think he did a pretty good interpretation of it, even if it's a little less abrasive than the Modest Mouse Version.
God damn can it not just be a tribute that jesse plays for MM because it's a great song? Why does everyone have to analyse this shit...it's awesome...done
i read that comment and interpreted it literally at first. i didnt know you were talking about the lyric. i thought you ment fake people shut up the second time around.
Try checking it out before you bash. I didn't bash this version. This is a good version. Good that the crowd got into it especially. However it is kept very close to the original, which generally I like it when people change up covers. Hence why I change up all the covers I do. My only criticism of this one is that the vocals are a little weak. Other than that it is top notch. If I was bragging I would say mine is the best out there, which I know it isn't.
at least I am not trying to sound like the dude from Bright Eyes trying to cover Modest Mouse... It takes more balls to find your own sound than rip someone else's off... And if you are going to flame me, at least try and be original... You are just as bad as an artist trying to sound like someone else, you lack the balls to be original.
I tried reading this comment and taking it seriously, but if you honestly think this is unoriginal, you are about as idiotic as a retarded puppy that sniffs glue. If you actually LISTENED to both versions (guitar and vocals). you'll know that they're completely different from each other. You say that the crowd likes him, because they do, and you will never have a crowd that loves you because you sound like a retarded sea lion whose mother didn't love him. Word to the wise, lose the bowler hat.
First off the Bowler hat is in tribute to a brilliant artist and close friend of mine who died, I don't wear it for style but respect. Second, this really isn't that original, though I do like the change up in lyrics. A truly original take on modest mouse would be like what Sun Kil Moon did with MM stuff, now THAT is brilliant and original. Yes Lacey changed some things up. And for you info, I have had crowds just as into my shows as this in Nashville, when I lived there.
oh and I will say I don't absolutely hate this song... All I have been essentially saying is that he could have done more with it. It leaves me wishing he changed it up a little bit more, or had more dynamics in it, or something. It just leaves me unsatisfied. Like I said I like the change in lyrics, etc... Just would like to hear MORE originality. Everyone has jumped me like I am accusing him or butchering the song, which he didn't. It just doesn't rock my world.
dude your dumb. just go listen to the og verison of this song and then listen to this guy and you can see he only changes the ending lyrics. like its completely the same song. well i guess this would be an acoustic verison but still this is actually worse cuz there isnt a second guitar. so you just sounded like a retard to all modest mouse fans(which is a lot) so chill out(im sure i seem mad but i was just trying to let you know. like listen to grantmwalker hes right about it all)
It's alright, but the vocals are a little rough... I do a better version to be honest... Though I change it up a lot... this is a little more true to the original than mine.
It's great that during the recording of Modest Mouse actually writing this song, I believe in the late 90's, that they yelled Fakes, and almost ten years later,
Not to be a jerk, but I'm pretty sure I saw Modest play Trailer Trash in Pittsburgh this summer...I could be wrong, but I think I remember being really excited after the show because they played it.

Modest Mouse played this song quite a bit on the last tour. I really respect Jesse Lacey for the songs he covers, but most of the time I really don't like the way he does it. On the otherhand, his NMH covers are always great.
