As much as Squire is the man, I cannot help thinking he over egged the outro to this way too much. The song didn't need it, it was a good tune anyway. It was almost like Squire saying 'right, i need to prove i'm the greatest guitarist of my generation' newsflash John - you already are/were.
@mmmmtobby It's a horrible wanky outro, nothing more than dull blues wankery, the total polar opposite to extended version of I Am The Resurrection back in the day.
man those lyrics sure do suck, and I actually read them, makes Liam Gallagher look like Bob Dylan. its a big greasy slice of retro britpop and Squires talents are above it, no wonder he disbanded them pretty quickly. Squire shreads at the end by the way- by far the best part.
Th Singer Chris Helme is a Fucking assume singer Md was singing/writing great tunes before he hours the Seahorses. My band supported him last week and he is one of the best live singers ive ever heard.
if you listen to the bit at the end, it just looks like John Squire is in the wrong place. He is playing great licks, but there is a monkey on the drums just banging bang bang bang and the singer looks like a tramp who thinks he's john lennon and has just got the dream ticket
i'm sorry but John Squire is so fucking cool. Sitting on an amp with his legs crossed and then pulling himself up, leaning back and playing that mega riff... Just defines cool.
I love the Roses I really do - but do why would they reform? For the money? A really bad reason. Let them rest in peace with grace and respect that they deserve. They had their time - it was fantastic - they live on in their music which is still as real to me today as when it was first written, and in the bands that formed because of them.
To reform would be a self-parody, it would be Spinal Tap....everything the Roses stood against.
@THthefirst you stand by your statement about them reforming for money is a really bad reason? why is it a really bad reason? dont they deserve a pay day after everything they went through?
that is your own opinion. Im thirilled their back together - each one f them has still got that magic spark that makes them the roses! I am so glad i was part of the generation x who grew up to the indie sounds, any chance to relive these times is pricelsess! Im in Canada so lets hope they do a nrth american tour!

Some crap talk on here and some amusing comments too.... come on i mean Squire may have gone off on one, but there is still some great playing on second coming....Breaking into heaven, Ten storey, Tears, How do you sleep, Love spreads, all class numbers. However for me his best work is stuff like where angels play, waterfall and badman..understated and cool. Also have a large infatuation with his solo work on the long version of one love despite the fact that it's a generally ignored roses tune.
To be honest Squire said he wouldnt mind reforming the stone roses after attending Led Zepplin gig at Wembley. Hes a fantastic guitarist and a hero of mines but comes across obnoxious and up his own arse doing his art.
I really like the seahoreses's album, although their live performance never matched their studio counterparts as they didnt add anything to the song and lacked enough energy. But tbh the seahorses were alot better than the roses live with ian browns aweful vocals.
@robjapan Ah, you are obviously incredulous! My opinions are not facts: they are my opinions, so it would be impossible to back them up with evidence, because such "evidence" would be another interpretation of what I enjoy. I'm am not advocating a semantic restructuring of the English language; at no point did I say that my opinion is superior to another, check! I was simply defending my right to comment. Unlike you, who gets offended by differing opinions, I think it should be expected.
@robjapan When you grow up the world will be less frustrating for you. Tip: I would advise that you start to expect differing opinions in your life. Your solution, that people don't post "negative comments" is impractical. It shows that you are immature: what would be considered negative, and do opinions not change? You'll get along with the world a lot better once you accept other people's opinions; not in agreement, but that they have a right to them, even when they differ from your own.
@TheBhoyJoe Again with the lack of any evidence to back up your opinions, I'm happy for you to express yourself but back up what you are saying.
I feel like you want to say whatever you want and get away with it and when challenged on what you say you claim freedom of speech, sorry but debate is more involved than that.
I like on your other comment you said "at no point did I say that my opinion is superior to another" and yet that is exactly what you're saying, going around claiming music and
John Squire wank-fest: busker on vocals, below average drummer and bassist. This isn't anywhere near what the Roses were...not even the 2nd coming. THIS IS WHAT COCAINE DOES TO THE SOUL.
@robjapan This music is underwhelming. I'm glad that I don't see what you see: you probably tear up while watching the x-factor...Art is a subjective thing, just because you see it as obvious, doesn't mean that everyone else does. In my opinion, this is poor music, bad lyrics, and it's about allowing the guitarist, while binging on coke, to pretend that he's Jimmy Page; hence the 'longer than the song itself' wanky guitar-solo-outros. Squire always had talent, however, without Brown, no taste.
@TheBhoyJoe If you don't like it then don't comment, comment on videos you do like, what people do and don't like is just up to personal taste.
Don't presume anything about anyone over the internet my friend, I've never even seen a single episode of x-factor nor would I wish to.
Be honest with yourself for a moment, link me any stone roses LIVE performance that is better than this... then when you can't find any you can start to have a re-think.
@robjapan Comments don't have to be positive; it isn't in any of the rules here on youtube. Criticism should be expected on most every page, it's childish to expect otherwise. In life, People will have opinions that are different from yours: maybe you should get used to this?? Perhaps you should stop being an indie angst wank, who thinks that his own personal opinions are factual analyses? Just because you think it's good, doesn't make it true, nor any countering opinion less sincere, or valid.
nah, I;m sorry. this is a good song up until the end when it quickly becomes the John Squire show and a little bit one sided. I love Squire and the Stone Roses, and this is a good track, but this lot were never going to go big. Squire's doing a great impression of Marty McFly in Back to the Future when he goes nuts at the school prom. Poor.
I used to knock about with john(squire) and browny as kids, believe me ian was the most ambitious friend ive ever met, john had the talent but wasnt really interested in making it big time, big up,peace x

Squire was ok, but I wouldnt say that he was the best since hendrix. Technically, he was at his best and most inventive on the first roses album, but from the second coming onwards he mostly indulged in basic pentatonic blues riffing, and if you can play a pentatonic blues scale, you can pretty much play everything he did second coming onwards. It may sound good, but technically its pretty simple. There are multitudes of better guitarists, many on record, most playing at a pub near you.
I never said I didnt like squire, just dont think hes as good as schorschileini. In my first band we covered roses and seahorses, playing resurection, waterfall, made of stone, love spreads, ten stry love song and love is the law, among others. Of that, the hardest songs to learn were resurection, waterfall, and made of stone. Songs like breaking into heaven, love spreads, daybreak, tears, and love is the law, particularly the solo are simple blues jams and zeppelin cop offs. Honestly, try it.
I can play Waterfall, Made of Stone etc on both bass and guitar, but could never have written them. Squires true genius is that he wrote songs that suited his style perfectly and influenced a generation of guitarist, so in my opinion he was great. I agree his later stuff is all a bit Jimmy Page, but he made his mark long before recording the Second Coming, you yourself covered his songs, which kind of proves my point.
Well as I said, his earlier stuff was better. From what I have read anyway, the stuff on the second coming wasnt written by squire anyway, it was written by a mr C. O. Caine, which generally cancels out any genius element.
@blurry67 The 3rd Roses album would hav been ace, A mix of this which IAN would have put a swagger too, & mix of UN FIN MONKEY BIZ with Corpes in her mouth WITH squire would hav been even better then it already is!!
@blurry67 Truth be told Ian Brown blames Second Coming's miss haps on J SQUIRE ! yeah ture he indulged & pushed Reni's drums & bass back! but why did't IAN write more songs with SQUIRE like they use2? he sould't hav let him get away with it! its both to blame!
Why Reni left exactly has never really been established. John's and Ian'd version of event were very different, each blaming the other, and as Reni never commented on the situation it's not clear were thr truth lies. It's a fact that Reni wanted to come back and was told by Ian he had been replaced and that was it. What went wrong within the band I think it's a complex matter made up of many different factors and no one should solely take the blame for it.
Bass man BUM notes at 2.29!! But whatever.....stop giving Helm shit over this....he was 1/4 the band and did his bit...ditto the other 2...its not all about squire u morons!!
after watching that awful attempt at this at glastonbury im pleased to hear this..although his singing is still a little off. Squire is 1 of the best guitarist ever, yet he keeps getting together with singers who look the part but cant sing.. Ever heard I an Brown singing live?..jesus!
Love is the law has got to be my favorite album of all time. Love me and leave me, I want you to know and Blinded by the sun, are amazing songs (the whole album is pure class). If you haven't got it then your missing out.
I heard Ian Brown has heard Squire playing the riff during sessions and recognised it the first time he heard it on the radio. In a way I think this singer's voice would sound a little better the Brown's for this track.
always makes me laugh how everyone around any of the (real) fab four (the roses) just looks unimportant and silly. There really was something about that band, something beyond the music.
Hard to start a band off just the reputation of the guitarist. The frontman needs charisma too. This guy's wearing sunglasses, and nobody even knows who he is. What's the point??? Plus, if Squire is the featured guitarist, and that's what they're hanging their hat on, then why would they want the singer holding a guitar too? it rivals the attention towards Squire.
erm... whilst i would love to call you all the twat's under the sun, and leave it at that, I will actually try to explain.... the singer (chris helme) was a well known busker at the time when he was approached by the band, he is holding a guitar coz he is PLAYING the fucking thing, this is live! And he is wearing sunglasses coz he is a fuckin' rock n roll star!.... u twat!
Chris Helme? never heard of him. If he was a busker, there was a reason he was only a busker, and they should have left it at that. But nobody can accuse anybody with previous involvement with Stone Roses to have good business acument. .... u twat.

i know many wont agree but to me squire is the best guitarist since hendrix. just take a look at how he plays this solo. his technique is incredible!
schorschileini 2 years ago
@schorschileini uhm you would also have to consider stevie ray vaughn and john frusciante for that matter
sonetlumiere85 2 years ago

Honestly, try it.
miko1975guitar 1 year ago
I can play Waterfall, Made of Stone etc on both bass and guitar, but could never have written them. Squires true genius is that he wrote songs that suited his style perfectly and influenced a generation of guitarist, so in my opinion he was great. I agree his later stuff is all a bit Jimmy Page, but he made his mark long before recording the Second Coming, you yourself covered his songs, which kind of proves my point.
punkoid76 1 year ago
Well as I said, his earlier stuff was better. From what I have read anyway, the stuff on the second coming wasnt written by squire anyway, it was written by a mr C. O. Caine, which generally cancels out any genius element.
miko1975guitar 1 year ago
So being a rock star into drugs cancels out genius? What planet are you on?
punkoid76 1 year ago
Exactly! Every rock star and songwriter worth mentioning since the 60's was on something or other!

At least you get a tune off Chris Helme live... Brown sounds like he's having a difficult dump in an underpass...

What a band! What an album!
Obviously never as good as the Stone Roses (nothing will ever be!), but way better than any other band going at the time!
Good old Squire strikes gold again!
blurry67 2 years ago 6
@blurry67 The 3rd Roses album would hav been ace, A mix of this which IAN would have put a swagger too, & mix of UN FIN MONKEY BIZ with Corpes in her mouth WITH squire would hav been even better then it already is!!
handsomedevil98 2 years ago
@handsomedevil98: so true! If only!
blurry67 2 years ago
@blurry67 Truth be told Ian Brown blames Second Coming's miss haps on J SQUIRE ! yeah ture he indulged & pushed Reni's drums & bass back! but why did't IAN write more songs with SQUIRE like they use2? he sould't hav let him get away with it! its both to blame!
handsomedevil98 2 years ago
Why Reni left exactly has never really been established. John's and Ian'd version of event were very different, each blaming the other, and as Reni never commented on the situation it's not clear were thr truth lies. It's a fact that Reni wanted to come back and was told by Ian he had been replaced and that was it. What went wrong within the band I think it's a complex matter made up of many different factors and no one should solely take the blame for it.
blurry67 2 years ago
i think he should strap on that guitar a make some more music, he is sorely missed!

What happened to the Seahorses. They were great. I loved the album Do it Yourself every sone is fantastic, especially Love me or Leave me
superretrochick1 2 years ago
Great stuff.
I've not heard anything but the one album,'Do It Yourself' (same name as an Ian Dury & The Blockheads album I had).
Its a good one though.
I really like that track 'Suicide Drive'.
I see Noel collaborated on one track too.
Thanks for posting this mate.
The only other vid I've seen of theirs was 'Blinded By The Sun'.
PottyEsq 2 years ago
after watching that awful attempt at this at glastonbury im pleased to hear this..although his singing is still a little off.

If you haven't got it then your missing out.

i saw an interview with mani. it said "when did you know the roses were over?" mani said... "when i heard love is the law coming from the studio"....
chrisj1602 2 years ago 2
I heard Ian Brown has heard Squire playing the riff during sessions and recognised it the first time he heard it on the radio. In a way I think this singer's voice would sound a little better the Brown's for this track.

Love is the law. Love under will. 93 93/93!

Helme is a top singer, shame everyone continues comparing him to Ian Brown, 13 years after the Roses split
He aint no Brown, but he's a good enough singer in his own right
avd1988 2 years ago 2
They had the best vocalist (Helme) and the best guitarist in England....too bad they couldn't keep it together.

Hard to start a band off just the reputation of the guitarist. The frontman needs charisma too. This guy's wearing sunglasses, and nobody even knows who he is. What's the point??? Plus, if Squire is the featured guitarist, and that's what they're hanging their hat on, then why would they want the singer holding a guitar too? it rivals the attention towards Squire.
cdcruce 2 years ago
erm... whilst i would love to call you all the twat's under the sun, and leave it at that, I will actually try to explain.... the singer (chris helme) was a well known busker at the time when he was approached by the band, he is holding a guitar coz he is PLAYING the fucking thing, this is live! And he is wearing sunglasses coz he is a fuckin' rock n roll star!.... u twat!
toothchipbeebop1986 2 years ago
Chris Helme? never heard of him. If he was a busker, there was a reason he was only a busker, and they should have left it at that. But nobody can accuse anybody with previous involvement with Stone Roses to have good business acument. .... u twat.
