hey I just want to say thanks for uploading this, it made my night to see mote man again I miss everything about Sardis now that I'm only there for summers but seeing stuff like this helps with my animal withdrawals
He's adorable! Shame on those people, barn owls are supposed to be scared of the LIGHT! It's cute that he sleeps with a nightlight though :) poor little guy.
wow I wonder what the previous owners did to make an animal afraid of its natural time of the day and its natural prey? poor thing. the fear of cats i cant blame him cause since he cant fly cat might eat him (personally I love cats but even I know they are predators) glad your giving him a better life
Awww what a cutie pie~ My parrot had to sleep w/the light on for about 2 months when we 1st got him. We leave light on in next rm, so he can still see but its dark enough for him to sleep. He would also panic if anything happened inside his cage, like he would bump into a toy, then freak out. He thought a big bad thing was gonna eat him in there. Id have to reassure him/then he's ok. He has to be cuddled/clucked, & snuggled for about 3mins b4 nite nite. He also says nite/nite to me too.
Why do you think they have such short lives in the wild when one with a bone condition can live to past 16 in captivity? Is it their natural diet? Do other Owls have similarly short lives? Why are their lives so short?
They are being outlived by Budgies, Cockatiels, ducks, chooks, etc in the wild but not in captivity. I know Owls also have predators, but how is it that Budgies - hunted by humans, hawkes, eagles and possums can outlive a Barn Owl?
@verticalsmurf A barn owl consumes about 1600+ rodents per year. Therein lies a primary difference between a barn owl and a budgie. Barn owls die prematurely from rodent poisoning, accidents with vehicles and power lines, and attacks from great horned owls.
@verticalsmurf Also, their habitats are being destroyed and the decrease in old barns available for nest sites. Barn owls are lightweight with very little body fat (not like budgies have a lot :-)), so it can be difficult for them to endure longer colder winters, as their soft feathers are not waterproof.
@verticalsmurf another big part of it is that in the wild when predators like barn owls get older and weaker they very quickly get to a point where they cant feed themselves anymore and so they die or get picked off by other predators. In captivity where food and safety is never a problem they can live a ton longer even with other medical problems. BTW to all mote is still doing well for an old geezer last time i saw him
@syeend1 give mote snuggles and a good head scratch from me.
I know there is no real reason behind it, but it never ceases to amaze me that a budgie can live longer than an owl, and my Conure will outlive all my neighbours cats and dogs (tee hee). I guess size doesn't matter.
what a awesome barn owl! i love mote! he is beautiful! i want a barn owl! although my parrot wont want a bird of prey! but that is so sweet! i can't say it enough! i love my parrot just as much as mote and every bird
Thanks to all those kind-hearted people who rescue the sick, injured and abandoned creatures of the wild, who would otherwise starve or die a slow death. Bless your hearts and work. If I didin't live in the stupid city, I would DEFINITELY do this. I have rescured more abandoned animals over the years. Thanks for posting! Keep it up.
@avalonmuse...You know....since he loves water so much...bet he would LOVE having a bathtub full of water for himself...I read the book "Wesley The Barn Owl" (that was a great book, I highly reccomend it!) a year or so ago, and Wesley was a barn owl who loved water, and he got to take baths in a bathtub! these owls are so precious
it is too bad that some people didn't take proper care of this one :(
@moonhowler1234 Thank you for asking. Mote has glass bone syndrome, where all the bones in the wings are fused together. He can lift his wings slightly, but can't fly.
i wish there were owl breeders where you could go and buy one... i think having an owl for a pet would be so sweet. though i'd put him outside during the night. XD
Awe! I called up Sardis once about five years ago, I was too young to volunteer there at the time :( Then we moved. This guy is such a cutie! I'm glad he's getting better care now, despite his syndrome :)
Just asking: why those metal looking rings around each of his ankles, and don't they weight him down? Also, it was wonderful to watch him enjoy is bath time, and wondering then if a larger bathing area would be good, as he looks pretty cramped . Thanks.
@meriprem The leather straps that are attached to his ankles are called jesses. When a large bird is glove held, these straps are there to keep the bird tethered to the glove. This prevents possible injury if a bird tries to fly off the glove.
Yes, I agree, he looked a little cramped. It was small enough that he was less likely to fall over on his side. He doesn't have the normal strength to use his wings to right himself back up.
@TheHabati I never said they have to live with humans but they also don't have to live in the wild. my reasoning and proof lies in the thousands of people who own owls and all the owls that live in the wild. they can exist in the wild and with humans and don't have to be contained to one or the other
@AnelaKaMalu i want an owl because they're my fav animal. and what do you mean owls are not pets? just look at all the people who have them as pets. i mean of course you can't just go out into the wild, catch one and keep it as a pet. but if you raise it from an egg then you can raise it to be domestic
honest i wouldnt keep a beutiful creature like an owl locked up in a cage or in a house :( i know it would be very awesome to own one but they are wild and DESERVE to be left in peace :( it just kinda pains me to see those ties on its legs :(
@TheHighbeat Also the alamaris (leather straps around his ankles) are used to hold leather straps which we hold on to while we move him. It is for his safety, if he didn't have them, he would most likely fall off of the glove because he has poor balance because of bone growth disorder. It in no way harms him or causes him discomfort.
What kind of permit do you need to take care of a barn owl? Everyone keeps telling me that its illegal everywhere in the United States regardless of permit.
@PIXLnxt read the book Wesley the Owl. Great book but it tells you how hard they are to take care of. And you have to make them the center of your life for up to 20 years.
I just had the pleasure of viewing all your pics from the raptor center (clicked on the link in the description) and read all of the pic explanations. How cool! You are doing such awesome work helping out these beautiful animals. :D
Is it just me? or do i hear the sound of someone taking a shower in the background? (my birds react to bathing with a similar suggestion. If I'm out of the shower and they see me putting on body lotion, my macaw starts to bathe, and then the others follow suit). (wonder if it has anything to do with this little guy. He's so sweet). Thanks for sharing the video.
It makes me very happy to know that there are people out there that can care for such a beautiful owl. Thanks for sharing him with us, it is so cute to watch him play in the water
@LumberjackLover Thank you for your kind words. It's completely a privilege to assist birds of prey. MoteMan just makes it all the more irresistible to be of support.

He's so adorable and gorgeous! I love how each barn owl has there own specific personality, and there all unique in there own way. It's so strange that he is afraid of the dark! I've never heard of anything like that in an owl. I'm planning on adopting a baby one in a few years, once I have a big enough space of my own. There such amazing animals. wow! hes sure is special one isnt he? i love barn owls and he is so cute! the first owl i've heard of that is scared of the dark and of mice! haha! i hope he lives to have a long life! ^_^
This is, by far, the cutest owl ever! :) I want an owl so badly, you're lucky to be able to care for him! You must be doing a brilliant job at that, by the way, by keeping alive until 14. Be proud of your achievement and keep up the good work!
@Jamesss123456 Awww, thank you so much! But I can't take credit for all of his good care. There are and have been many amazing volunteers who look after all of the feathered guests and residents. Everyone falls in love with Mote.
what a wonderful owl. shame on the people who had him before--what were they thinking to keep this bird and then do a bigger disservice by not giving him the proper nutrition.
Awww he's sooo cute!! It's a shame he was in the hands of uneducated owners. But its good to know there are good people out there like you that he can call family :) Congrats with Mote! !4! =D He looks soo happy!!
This is just another great example of what reaching your hand out to help can do, I can not believe that this little guy is 14, Obviously the owner has taken good care of this guy, God Bless
It is so sad that he did not get the care that he needed at a young age. It is heartwarming to see him so happy despite his condition.

what a wonderful owl. shame on the people who had him before--what were they thinking to keep this bird and then do a bigger disservice by not giving him the proper nutrition.

This is just another great example of what reaching your hand out to help can do, I can not believe that this little guy is 14, Obviously the owner has taken good care of this guy, God Bless
