Actually I'm not German, but I do think that "Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles" is the best part of your anthem you German people, and there is no reason the miss it, just because there is someone afraids of you. A unified Germany had to be the highest and most important goal in the hearts of the people. It wasn't about Germany ruling the entire world. One has to take account of the 19th century's standards.

@Scharfschutzen1 actually i grew up with a neighbor who had been in treblinka, in chzecoslovakia, and i know i spelled that wrong, she and 3 other girls (that's what they were - she was 22) and hid in a barn. she lost her entire family, except for her husband. i also went to school with a girl who's father had been in a camp, he came and talked to us about it. and in my sr. year, another friend's uncle came and told us about liberating a camp. i didn't need tv, jackass

@Scharfschutzen1 there were pow camps here. i am well aware of that. y'all had plenty too. look up berga if you have a mind to do so. the soviet pow camps were horrible, and most germans didn't return from them. we generally gave y'all back after the war. also, we tended to treat the prisoners fairly well, all things considered.

I can understand why so many people have prejudices against Germans. I am Cuban, and the history of my country is very similar to the history of Germany. Many people who defend cuba's current goberment are blinded. Americans dont know the power a dictator can have over a nation. It's very hard to understand, but it happens. And just like in Cuba, not everyone was the same there. The historical moment also influenced in the people. Hitler was a great dictator, have you heard that? well it's true.

As an American with a keen interest in history, I believe that Hitler fooled the German people and the world in the beginning. He was Time magazines Man of the Year in 1938, that is how much we didn't know his true intentions which came forth as the years went on. He did a lot for Germany at first, but led to it's ruin and shame at the end.

"Deutschland Deutschland über alles" was written 1841 (!!) by August Hoffmann von Fallersleben.
I did not mean that germany should rule the world. In 1841, Germany was not really one state - many earls und dukes were fighting for their territorial power. van Fallersleben wanted to say just one thing: stop the fighting within germany and let the german state be "over all" (of your other thoughts).
Today, in 2010, we can´t do anything about the anthem being misused...

The music was written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 as an anthem for the birthday of the Austrian Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of "Das Lied der Deutschen" to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.
This is my anthem. Starting with Deutschland Deutschland ueber Alles and of course " Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue, deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang.

When the anthem was written, the Germans strived for their national unity. There wasn't even a german state as such at the time. And this anthem was a source of courage and inspiration. A unified Germany had to be the highest and most important goal in the hearts of the people. It wasn't about Germany ruling the entire world. One has to take account of the 19th century's standards.
