  • 17:08 I swear to God, when that music started playing, for a split second I was all like "What the...?! MLP intro music?!"

  • First Bob and now the Bear. DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! :P

  • @MHLUNA24 Yes I do. That guy had an awesome BEARRRRRRRR skin outfit and BEARRRRRRR mask. I wish I had one, don't you?

  • After that stupid decision about which is the better movie....lets hope that after he walks off into the sunset, we don't see the Nostalgia Critic again until many years later when we find his grave and never know what happened to him.......

  • @ImAnnietoo Yet another jealouse John Wayne fanboy. It's just an opinion dude, which critic has made abundantly clear throughout this vid so grow up and get over it.

Personally i think there is no compariosn. The Coen film is just better period, the John Wayne film was just standard hollywood bullshit of the time.

  • @FalseImpressionist75 the coen film was the same, they barely changed the script it was a sackless way to make a few quick bucks

  • @MrBearking88 Sure thing dude, if you consider better acting, different scenes, one or two added characters(the bear skin guy) and a completely different ending that is more faithful to the book the same film then I geuss pigs can rightfully fly as well. Seems like your comment is just another "sackless way" of denying the obviouse.

  • The bear guy was pretty cool, he had an awesome bear skin outfit and bear mask.

  • @Rack44hoonmaster dont you mean *in charlton heston voice* an awesome BEARRRRRR skin out fit and BEARRRRRR mask? XD

  • The bear guy was just some guy who lives on his own and can clearly hunt well and had a knowledge for medicine when in the movie he offered some to the main characters. He's not a main character he was just representing what he was and he wasn't the only one. Back in the Old West there were guys like him who live alone and were able to take care of themselves by living off the land. The bear guy lived off by hunting and trading with travelers with what he had, animal skins and other items.

  • @LeisureSuitRantFiend The Critic forgot to put in "The Outlaw Josey Wales," and "Open Range," at the beginning of the video. Those were some pretty damn good western movies too.

  • he should do an old vs. new on the shining (1980 & 1997)

  • .... matt damond?

  • The new girls playing the main character looks like the witch that put Salem on the map form the movie "sorceresses apprentice".

  • The ner one had such an anticlimactic standoff though....

  • The original version being outdone by a newer one? Critic indeed...

  • He forgot to mention that it game from a book.

  • Robert Duvall, ROBERT FUCKING DUVALL!!

  • Rooster Cogber? What kind of name is that for a cowboy mercenary? What kind of name is that for a PERSON? It sounds like it should be the name of that character in "Rock a Doodle."

  • I honestly loved both movies. I liked having the traditional, "everything was fine ride into the sunset moment" as well as the darker more complex tone the problem for me with the newer one was that song. The leaning on the everlasting arm song. I was humming it everytime it came up and then when the reveal with her arm came out I didn't know whether to laugh at the slightly dark humor or cringe because the song felt in slightly poor taste given my love of the character.

  • Yea I have seen both and NC does have very good points also I wanted to point out out the actual age difference from the two Mattie's in the 1969 version the actor is actually 22 years old bet half of you probably didn't know and in the remake I bet she's closer to the age of what she is supposed to be in the movie just wanted to point that our for fun

  • John Wayne won his only Oscar in this film.

  • 9:08 "Matt Damond"

    Matt Damon

    *Fixed

  • another thing about the remake of Mattie, i liked her because she was so damn intimidating. if she had something to say then Godammit she was saying and it was going to be heard whether that sappy drunkard wanted to hear it or not. of anyone for that matter. My father's favorite part was when she walked back to the Banker and asked to buy one of the ponies she just stole. At that point the old man was all like "wait ... we're not trading again are we?" and that cracked us both up.

  • BEAR MAN FTW

  • No matter what version, Rooster's "Fill your hand you SON OF A BITCH!!" line is always just as truly awesome!!!

  • Hahahahaha The Tick 12:12

  • the New true grit needs a video game....with the bear guy:)

  • my comment WILL bhe on TOOOP ....!!!! LA la Laaaa !!!! TGWG rulz

  • The world would be a better place if The Coens and The Dude made more movies together.

  • @40Pacino movies ABOUT what -THINK before you post a comment .

  • @alifelesscritic I don't know, whatever they want to make a movie about. My point was that the two movies that they did together (The Big Lebowski and True Grit) were really good, at least I thought they were very good, and I would like to see them collaborate more often. The whole 'world being a better place' comment was just an exaggeration. May I ask what is the big deal? Why do I need to think of a storyline for a movie before I post a comment on a video on Youtube?

  • @40Pacino jeff b is DISGUSTING cuz of his gasping mouf. (disgusting low-life-ness is COOL ? ! )

  • @alifelesscritic Looks like you need to think before you post since your comments make no sense whatsoever.

  • hate western too...

  • I am sorry as soon as you said the Duke didn't win I stopped watching!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I will admit that I love Jeff Bridges and I love John Wayne even more. But, I found that I favored the newer remake even though the old one is a classic.

  • I have the same feelings on these films. When I proclaim to others why I love the new film and still like the original, I simplify it by telling them that the original is a great John Wayne flick and the new one is an all-around great film.

  • no top comments yet well........CHUCK NORRIES!!!!!

  • @sporeuploder15 mine WOULD be "top" (but function is disabled)

  • I agree, I just watched the Old Version and I found it was not well cut and paced at many moments and it just gets boring after a bit. The new one is shorter but seems more detailed and exciting :D

  • "let's be honest"? "a (girl !)child that grows up with that kind of thirst for violence..." -IS NOT BELIEVEBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!! >: (

  • @alifelesscritic calm the hell down man, its just his opinion on movie, Find something better to get annoyed at

  • @ork922 Right back at you !! idiot

  • @alifelesscritic

He has no right to prefer the new version? ummmm...yeah he sorta does

  • @ServantOfPuppets it's not in keeping with the character.the fuck is he NOSTALGIA critic if he is NOT nostalgic ?! (ps. i don't give two shits about what DOUG thinks !! Doug didn't review "turtles forever" AS THE CRITIC because he LIKED that movie - so what the fuck is he doing HERE ? he obviously LIKES both (!) versions of "true grit" yet prefers the NEW one. WTF .long story short- he fucked up.NO doubt.)

  • @alifelesscritic Dude, just don't take it too seriously. It's for comedy, and if you don't like his opinion you don't have to agree. Just go "oh well", fuck it, move on, eat some cookies, watch more videos :D

  • @alifelesscritic The nostalgia critic' opinions are exaggerations of Doug's opinions. You have no right to criticize someone for stating their opinion. If you really don't care what doug thinks then don't watch his videos.

  • @Reaper00140 baby...! no need to like the actor to enjoy a role. note that i am also BEING a critic here ! have you READ my arguments or are you JUST being a fanboy ? you guys are truly pathetic if you can not tell how "serious" i am being... : /

  • @Reaper00140 where is THE APOLOGY asshole ?

  • @alifelesscritic I don't have anything to apologize for. If anyone here is the asshole, it's you for being so completely unreasonable. You say he has no right to prefer the new version. Following this logic, he should love every old movie he gets but in almost all of his reviews, he picks old movies he specifically hates. The Old vs New segments are when he compares the pros and cons as HE sees them not as how you want him to see them. The NC is simply his mouthpiece to express said opinions.

  • @Reaper00140 my point is : i was being over -the- top "asshole" for COMEDIC effect ...JUST like ....him .... i had GOOOOD intentions! n YOU hurt MY FEELINGS so YOU are THE asshole. < :_ (

  • @alifelesscritic Okay...Now that that's been made clear...I apologize. To be fair, however, it's hard to pick up on jokes like that when they're in text form.

  • @Reaper00140 very cool of you to ADMIT having been wrong . kudos : )

  • @alifelesscritic Heres a newsflash bub, your comments aren't funny or over the top, they're just retarded.

  • @FalseImpressionist75 that's just hurtful

  • @alifelesscritic Say's who......

It's a film dude, get over it.

  • they got THIS wrong ...they got THAT wrong ...-BUT! "...it works to the remake's advantage" -WHAT ?! >: (

  • HE has no RIGHT to prefer the NEW version !!! >: (

  • mattie from the new reminds me of one of my friends. One of my MALE friends.

  • I saw the original film, read the book, then saw the remake. The remake is SO closer to the book. In the book, Mattie really is that strong, determined, and stubborn. She takes after her father. The fact that he hired her as bookkeeper when she was still a girl speaks to that, girls weren't employed as bookkeeppers back then. In the book, she did became man of the family because she is much more mature than her mother. It explains her story better and I think the new version totally got that.

  • No top comments?

  • @CylindricalWhistle ...mine are "top"

  • nostalgia critic should review the tick animated series

  • Robert Duvall!!! FUCKING. ROBERT. DUVALL!!!!!!

I'm sorry, sorry, no one nowadays can top Robert Duvall

  • I thought Kim Darby was good, but I found it a little distracting that she was a 22 year old playing a 14 year old.

  • He should do old vs new Thundercats

  • Hmmm John Wayne looks like my grandpa, who is a rancher. So I find the old one to be more of a cowboy, Jeff Bridges looks like a mix between a cowboy, Jesus, and a pirate from the Caribbean.

  • @MegumiGoose Jesus? Because of the beard?

If so, i think it's more like santa claus

  • @MegumiGoose And pirates of the caribbean because of the eyepatch?

Don't get it since John Wayne also has one.

  • @tricksterhuaun The beard is more like Santa... but I was thinking of Jesus because he has a long face(and a similar haircut)- Santa's is Round. And the eye patch is somehow more emphasized in the newer version- but that wasn't my main point. The long wispy locks and the black outfit doesn't really scream cowboy at me. But I think the main reason I was thinking POTC was the lighting and the way the movie seems to have been shot. Maybe it's just the modern way of doing things...

  • I loves how he used the song from the end of The Searchers in the end of this review! :D

  • @16theatregirl Which, btw, is one of my favoritest westerns!

  • La boeuf = the beef in french

  • 16:40 See you, space cowboy....

  • I jest realized tat duke in da remake has his eye patch on the wrong side lol

  • See, I watched the Big Lebowski recently. I found John Goodman scary, Steve Buscemi annoying and Jeff Bridges boring.

  • The Dude approves!

  • he souled do true grit vs black butler pretty much the same plot

  • 1:53-1:54 A random Guy:Man, come on...

    LeisureSuitRantFiend:SHUT UP!

Best part of it. If I was the random guy, I would've been like:O__O

  • @vscott39 the random guy is the dud from the big lebowski. and leisuresuitrantfiend and the nostalgia critic aren't the same person. in fact I'm not sure if they even know each other. all fiend does is upload his videos in HD.

  • lol Notice that the two Cogburns have eyepatches on opposite eyes.

  • You look back over Jeff Brides career starting with something like "Last Picture Show" and you almost have to think that he was born to play this role, it was just waiting for him to get old enough to do it.

What I'm curious about is which version was closer to the source material? I didn't know True Grit was based on a novel, and I guess the better story could be the one the follows closest to the book.

Also you really should include the soundtrack on these versus videos.

  • @NelsonStJames What's so different about the soundtracks?

  • @MegamanNG First off the original True Grit was composed by the great Elmer Bernstein, and the theme song is awesome. It fits perfectly for an epic western of the period reminescient of films like the Magnificient Seven. The Cohen's version is composed by Carter Burwell, and has a completely different feel. Now while I believe both versions fit the films for which they were made the Bernstein version works best as a sndtrack you can just listen to on it's own.

  • @NelsonStJames Wow. I'll be sure to listen to the music.

  • @NelsonStJames I read the book recently and the Coen version stick's to it the best, not 100% accurate(like most films adapted from books) but damn close.

  • new movie ftw!!!!

  • sweet! finnaly HD!

  • i think True Grit was better than the other one

  • just saw the remake it was great

  • I agree with the nostalgia critic.

I mean the movie was all about Mattie's revenge, of course she was the main character

  • well John wayne being the Great Hero but i think the new True Grit Really is more entertaining and Dark.

  • I LOVE THE BIG LEBOWSKI!

  • i've only seen the new one. it's pretty damn bad ass

  • @LeisureSuitRantFiend Why don't you upload nostalgia critics videos in full this way instead 15 minutes part 1, and the rest part 2?

  • Kim Darby was fucking annoying

  • Oh, I wanted to add one more:

    "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935) & (1962)

  • The "Old vs. New" segments are my favorite events on The Nostalgia Critic.

Doug, in case you're trying to figure out any other originals and remakes, here are some suggestions:

    "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956) & (2004)

    "The Parent Trap" (1961) & (1998)

    "The Producers" (1968) & (2005)

    "Pygmalion" (1938) & "My Fair Lady" (1964)

    "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) & (2002)

    Etc.

  • Just to point this out, if you read the book (which I really recommend) you would know that the 2011 version is more true to it.

  • @municipalitie I got to read the book.

  • JEFF BRIDGES

  • Cowboys and Aliens was suprisingly disappionting to me. Might as well point that out...

  • @MrJoint187 *disappointing

  • I hope he does an old vs new for the thing

  • @tooNoob4TV Pretty hard when that film is a prequel and not a remake.

  • @tooNoob4TV Which one The Thing (1982) vs The Thing From Another World or The Thing (1982) vs The Thing (2011).......even though The Thing (2011) is not a remake its a prequel.

  • Much like the Batman or Lord of the Rings movies, my feeling with this one is that I like the newer version more. Not because the old was bad or anything, but because the newer version improved on a lot. It was almost as if they watched the old version, took notes on what they did right, and then added their own little twist or went an extra step. And that applies to Nolan, Jackson and the Coens.

  • @40Pacino actually that should be a staple to make a remake

  • I love how in the Coen version, they really approach how Mattie is not only a woman in a man's world, but also a kid in a grown up's world. The scene where she is negotiating with the salesman is a perfect example.

  • For those who say that they should do old vs new on tron, let me remind all of you that Tron Legacy was a continuation of the 1st Tron, not a remake.

  • That's the Coen Brother's way between Big Lebowski and True Grit!

  • new mattie's character was closer to the book as was the begining/ending. the old was followed the rest of the plot more closely

  • Thumbs Up if you like John Wayne as the joker!

  • I WANT THAT BEAR......GUY.

  • I love the new Mattie Ross and I was pleasantly surprised he chose her as his favorite

  • @HarjKSTV never mind, I wasn't serious

  • Im proud of New :D

  • 15:37 ... is that .... is that justin bieber ? ( oh god i can't believe i've done a bieber joke, sorry folks )

  • I went the other way on this one. By one point.

  • It came out in 2010 not 2011. You idiot!

  • It would have been awesome if the bear guy was the one who tended to Matty's snake bite.

When Gogburn fell down to his kneeds...

"Are you in need of any medical attention?"

  • That was almost a shut out

  • This movie has the ability to make me sleep

  • He should do "Old vs New: Tron"

  • @billruller actually the newer film was a sequel !

  • @nanalinda4 oh :P

  • @billruller yep but thats fine most people dont even know or remember the first film ! it was suprising to see a sequel especially this late and by disney as well wow ! also i never saw the first one or the newer one though .

  • @nanalinda4 same, I didn't see the first one. But my dad did, and he loved it. I watched clips of it, and it looks pretty cool. I watched the sequal, and it was amazing. idk why it has bad reviews, they should watch it again. I think the first one is worth watching, and the new one...you just gotta see it. It is epic.

  • @billruller man i though i was the only person who liked tron legacy cool

  • @conrod15reveiw idk why they didn't like the movie. It was fantastic.

  • @billruller I prefer the new to the original...but that maybe because the effects are 10 times better than the in the 80s. Never really saw the original tho...

  • @ECL28E true, but still. The original is good. I mean it's the 80's, and the effects were done pretty well. But if the category is "Special Effects", of course the New one will win, it looks great. But what about Story, Villian, & Main Character? Thats lil difficult to combine and choose. Films are more to watch the plot & characters, not just how great it looks by the effects. Its kinda like NC's Old vs New: King Kong. The original Tron is really cool, check it out.

  • @billruller Old vs. New Conan the Barbarian

  • @mrdropkicker1 Thats a good one. But tbh, I'm not thinking about seeing the remake till it hits televsion. I mean they screwed up Clash of the Titans remake. Also, original Conan the Barbarion is Arnold's most popular and awesome films he did. So, if Doug is gonna do Old vs New of Conan the Barbarion, that will be very exciting. As for me, I would side with the old.

  • @billruller agreed

  • @billruller Most definitely. :)

  • True Grit was first release in 2010, USA

  • Tombstone rocks

  • I like the newer one not cuz I'm younger, but since it's absolutely gritty and follows the title.

  • Cannot unsee John Wayne as Joker...Jowayoker

  • In a few months (Maybe for Nostalgia- Ween), the Critic should do an old vs. new of 'Fright Night.'

  • Nobody likes this. On the bright side nobody dislikes this.

  • Good review. New Mattie was maybe a bit too obsessed to be realistic but I gotta agree with every other points.

  • Drinking game idea for this video: take a shot for every Lebowski reference.

  • The Duke vs. The Dude

  • My choices

Best Mattie = Kim Darby (As long as she had longer hair)

Best Cogburn = Bridges (Maybe with a background story)

Best Supporting Cast = Tie (I guess)

Best Villains = Tie (I guess)

Best Story = 1969 ( With a lill bit of darkness)

  • just to point out in the old version john wayne has is eye on his left eye while in the new version jeff bridges has his on his right eye.. i guess it doesn't really matter or having any meaning but still i wonder why?!

  • typical coen brothers ending...

  • Yeah, the guy in the bear hood was pretty random wasn't he? X3

  • Why didn't he do a Bum Review on the new True Grit?

  • @MrWii000 He didnt see it in theaters he saw it on DVD. Bum reviews are for movies in the theater

  • classic ending!!!!!!

  • I like the old better just for john wayne, but that's just me

  • It's LaBoeuf(LaBurf).

  • Here's my True Grit Old Vs New:

    John Wayne > Jeff Bridges

    Supporting Cast (2010) > Supporting Cast (1969)

    Visuals (2010) > (!969)

    Music (2010) = Music (1969)

    (1969) = (2010)

  • I disagree with every point he made, and believe me, that hasn't happened in a review or an old vs new. I can understand why he chose The Dude instead of the Duke, don't agree but that's ok. But choosing the almost one dimensional hate filled Mattie over the more realistic aware enough to be scared Mattie? That's just odd to me. But my main differing viewpoint, the leader of the villains, the remake had a scary good outlaw, while robert duvall seemed more like an antihero.

  • @XXCreed The Duke was good but just good while for me The Dude felt more like the character from the book, similiar point w/ Mattie too, I would assumed the original would had been the stronger way to portray her but I can agrue w/ the finished film & find the newer actress more interesting. & for the villians I like how visually he villian looked (like for he's described in the book) but Robert Duvall played him better, I kinda like the antihero way of playing it, he seemed more interesting.

  • Lol I wonder if nostalgia critic read the book?

  • oh man love old true grit more but i did like new true grit but in opinion you cant replace john wayne when i saw the commercial i said son of a bitch because i hate remakes but this was better then i aspected

  • 8 Big Lebowski Jokes. Am I won?

  • whats the song at 17:07

  • The Quick and the Dead?

  • I noticed about a lot of Oscar movies these days how empty or sad they make people feel afterwards. Once in a while it's okay, but does it really hurt a movie if there's a fulfilling, happy ending? Too often do I walk out of films with "bittersweet" endings that just depress the shit out of me. Okay, some movies can call for it, but I'm tired of it now. I go to the movies for a good time.

'How to Train Your Dragon' was our favourite movie last year because we actually walked out smiling.

  • She is Human, She's an independent Female!

  • Did the remake come out in January for some places? Cause where I live, I remember seeing it a few days before christmas in 2010. That being said, why does Critic keep referring to the remake as the "2011 Version"?

  • @40Pacino That's a good question. Maybe it's when he saw it or something. I remember seeing it just before heading back off to school in January (literally; my luggage was in the van and my father and I hit the highway right after the movie).

  • Doug is totally right. The Bear Guy rules.
