McCartney is the greatest songwriter in music history period! No one has had more of an impact in terms of influencing and changing music. Considering what he accomplished with Lennon and his solo career he is without a doubt the real King of Pop!
Without him music would sound very different today.
I could listen to this song over and over! But my favorite part has to be from 3:26 to the end. I think that's the part that I remember the most from hearing the song in my childhood.
oh god! Finally I found someone who likes man we was lonely, when the night and monkberry mon delight. Arow through me is great too, but those ones are perfect songs! (momma mis america is my favorite instrumental music ever, great one!)
OMG I always thought that at 1:17 it was real brass (not keyboards). I love songs like momma miss america, dear friend, dear boy, man we was lonely, when the night, lazy dynamite, waterfalls, temporary secretary, monkberry moon delight, ram on, too many people, we're open tonight, some people never know.... ... but ARROW THROUGH ME was always my favourite. It has a fantastic chord progression. Wierd dissonances. Good soul music.
Although I already loved the Beatles and much of McCartney's work, WKRP in Cincinnati first introduced me to this particular tune. I really dig it, too.
Best song from the back to the egg album. I know that it was heavily critisized but it had a nice different sound to it. just like the rest of the songs from that album like old siam, sir. @greenwich1754--Sampling was not even relevant back then. Instead people did covers--Don't know all about the Beatles, but as artists, their inspiration and style came from somewhere, just as other artists--maybe not sampling, but other influences. I see you love the Beatles/ Paul McCartney very much, so don't u think it is kinda cool that this old song has been made relevant again thru another form of music in the modern world? Obviously, he did because he allowed the sample.
@toy4230 The Beatles were influenced by Motown and often spoke of people like Chuck Berry as inspiration. In the end though, THEY were their own inspiration and blazed a trail that no one can touch today or ever.
@xenatikkanen Hey, to each his own. No one is denying what the Beatles did. Yes, they were creative geniuses; weren't the first and will not be the last. No one is contesting their talents, sweetie, so relax. I really don't care where they did or didn't get their influences from; their finished product was great. All I was saying was that someone used this as a sample and did a great job. In the end, their music still has relevance for people, so that is all that matters, right?
@toy4230 What is the attack for? I didn't attack you; you commented that you didn't know all about the Beatles, yet you were commenting. Secondly, don't call me SWEETIE, nor tell me to relax. I wasn't riled up, nor did I attack you, so YOU relax DUDE and take a pill.
@xenatikkanen dang, x, I didnt know it came off offensive; I think you picked up on my comment from someone else and jumped into our convo in some "matter of fact" stuff. You didn't know what we were talking about. Didn't attack you sweetie (Don't take sweetie as a condescending remark:I just call people that). Just don't want to argue with you Beatles fans off of a remark I said about someone's sample. You are too sensitive. You take a pill and reread my post because I did not attack you
@greenwich1754--Don't think u were following the thread too well my friend--we were saying how Erykah Badu did a good sampling of this song for her recent album. I said she doesn't sample garbage, meaning she has good taste when she samples (which she rarely does), so that would make it a compliment to this song. Since you do not know her and have never heard the song, maybe you should look it up, you might like it.
@toy4230 Don't take this the wrong way - I have no clue who"Erykah" is ( I was born in 1961, so there's a hint), but how is one a "true musician and artist", if one samples someone else's song? I don't think Paul, or any of the other Beatles sampled anything, to my knowledge.
@LemmingdeMerciless True, although I don't know if any "direct" sampling (i.e. sampling exact original directly from someone else's song) was on those songs. Sound bites, audio clips from movies/conversations, perhaps. But all the songs you mentioned were Lennon songs, and in the later years of the Beatles, he tended to get lazy/into drugs/Yokofied. McCartney wrote the lions' share of the hits/songs from 1967 forward. Rev. #9 is complete crap.
True on the no9 !! but i always thought hey were pioneers of sampling with using greensleeves on all you need is love and the audio clips that you mentioned, i also agree on mccartney writing the lions share of songs from 67, and i also think Lennon had a hang up since McC wrote yesterday onwards
@LemmingdeMerciless I guess I think of sampling as a direct lift of a commercially successful song, in part or all, with no alterations, but yeah, Greensleeves is a direct lift, unless the Beatles had a separate orchestra play that, which I doubt! In regards to your comment on Paul's "Yesterday" - yeah, even the most secure person (and Lennon wasn't) would have to be at least a little envious of one of the most recorded songs ever!
My favorite part of this song is 0:22. The way it changes. I don't know anything about musical technique; is there a name for it...like what is he doing with the instruments here? just hittin the cymbal or what? Happens again at 0:35, 1:06, well you get the idea :)
@fluffieb i completley agree with you i love that part as well. i also love the part at 1:35 to1:46. Listen to Erykah Badu 'Gone Baby,Don't Be long' she's amazing.
@fluffieb in simple musical terms what grabs you is when the bass note, highlighted by a double cymbal called "hi-hat" are being hit simultaneously a beat earlier, creating what's called a "syncope". Hope that makes sense to you.
@fluffieb - Don't know if it has a name but it's basically the product of opening the Hi-Hat with a pedal, letting it ring for a sec and closing it. It's also prominent in disco. I agree it works to great effect here :)
@fluffieb The drummer is playing a basic 4/4 beat, and when he gets to that portion of the song, he plays an eighth note on the snare plus the hi-hat (while opening the hi-hat). The eighth note would be the snare first (count hits on 2), then the hi-hat (while opening) (count hits on "and" after the 2). I would be happy to demonstrate this on my drums if you'd like.
@fluffieb your ears are right on... that change is what makes the song..it's not just the cymbal crashing but the way the chord is changing...check out erykah badu's sample -- she samples the part you like and basically loops it!
This is the ONLY LP I bought for just one song. Correction: the only one I kept after buying for one song. Richie Havens covered this song back in the 80's.
Back in 1985 or 86 a small radio station in a tiny town in Texas started an all Beatles/solo Beatle format. Sadly it didn't last very long but I credit them for introducing me to this song. I remember calling and asking what it was and the D J said he always received calls about this song.
I just keep coming back to this McCartney chestnut - shoulda been a bigger hit. So much time has passed that if they re-issued/played on the radio, it would sound new. (Sorry, know nothing about "Erykah Badu, or Bah Fongu, or whatever his name is).
@TKL90266 This was off Back to the Egg which produced by Chris Thomas - best know as the producer of, er, Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols. Maybe it's a bit more punk than you think!
Paul is awesome, The Beatles are awesome. I was reading a comment that said the stones are better. PLEASE!!! Yeah they're still around and touring, and they STILL aren't as good or popular as the Beatles.
As for sampling this song, just goes to show that some people aren't good enough to come up with their own stuff.
Take the worst McCartney song= Better than anything.
Passionate lyrics, reggae/jazz type beat, horns, and a Stevie Wonder type clavinet - way 2 funky!!! I even liked it when it's sampled on Erykah Badu's "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long"
@040404049 Agree and I love the Beatles but people please. The Beatles been gone for 40 years now and Paul's solo career bests his Beatles stint by some 31 years. Went to McCartney show last week, it was real good but those Beatle (only) fans were friggin' GEEKS!
Love the atmospheric funky/discoey groove going on in this song and McCartney's voice is really soulful. Back To The Egg was a great album imo, a superb mix of melodic ballads and rockers. Cheers for posting.
I'm really surprised - this must be the original I've never heard before - the first version of this song I ever heard was from Richie Havens and it caught me from the first time I heard it. Fantastic music that I love very much - greeting from slideede
I first heard this song in 1979 and it has been my favorite song ever since. It's one of those things that you try to identify why it has never been surpassed in my mind by any other song, but you can't. For about 20 years after, I used to make calls to radio stations to see if they would play it on the air. It never received the play time it deserved.
Oooh Babe, omfg, ignorance+malice=death. Black is the color that happens when you converge every color of the rainbow. Hence, Harvard Brainbows. Google it... you won't be sorry or sad ever again.
Man..this is one of my favourite Paul McCartney solo tracks ever. I wish he would play this live more often.....I can't understand why this song was never as big as some of his better known hits.......This is a classic!!!!!!
@kimberlymichelle2011 Good taste, that's from the album "back to the egg" the whole album is really good, try " getting closer" from the same album and also some tunes from the album "band on the run" hope you like.
@Julyman08 dude if the original comment was comparing The Beatles to The Jackson5, then Beatles all day. To say Paul...not the others, is "the real king of pop" over MJ is silly. If you wanna compare all the Beatles to MJ it doesn't make sense. If you wanna call The Beatles the four kings of pop, cool. But if there could only be one...MJ. Btw keep your flames to yourself, talk like a real person.
You can like or dislike their solo projects bcause in the end is a matter of taste. Now talking about Paul's solo work, my favorite is London Town and Ram.

Well ...from reading the comments here ...my opinion is that the reason the Beatles' music is so superior to whatever the Beatle members did solo, is simply because the four together created a synergy that they couldn't replicate by themselves alone. Those guys, including Ringo, were such geniuses ...also add to that another superb force behind them: George Martin.
@JohnLennon100 See......dude......and I promise I am not trying to be confrontational....I honestly thought the large majority of the Beatles music was simple minded soft shit.....McCartney and Wings blow the Beatles away in my opinion....Lennon was a big disappointment solo.....the other two are not important.....never were
@jmallton Well ...again ....that's your opinion and your entitled to it. I think you're wrong about the Beatles, and subestimating George Harrison and Ringo it's a huge mistake. I like Wings but I never thought it was a big deal compared to the Beatles. I do agree Wings were a more consistent band in the 70's than others in terms of good songs. Wings was Paul's band. It wasn't a real band 'cause Paul's name was really something after the Beatles. The Beatles made Paul, George, John and Ringo.
@JohnLennon100 What about Lennon ? Did he become to fucked up on drugs and Yoko to produce good music ?........I dont believe Lennon was near the artist McCartney was after the Beatles broke up .....Harrison had a few good songs and he got sued in court and lost for plagerizing one of them....LOL.....but I still like the song
Sorry to disappoint you "supercooled" but there's no "Hammond" Organ on this track. "But I do agree Back To The Egg" was a really great album probably Wings best next to "Venus & Mars". "Baby's Request", and "Getting Closer" come to mind too. Not sure why the Album didn't do better. Holly was the best technical drummer had to date as well as Juber being the best guitarist to date, maybe even better than Robbie McIntosh, I'm kind of split on that one.
Que canción! Parece que fue ayer que la escuché en la radio y ya han pasado 30 años! Además me remontó a una pelicula muy graciosa: Oh! Heavenly Dog, La canción está incluida en la banda sonora de la película. Saludos a los fans de Paul.

Passionate lyrics, reggae/jazz type beat, horns, and a Stevie Wonder type clavinet - way 2 funky!!! I even liked it when it's sampled on Erykah Badu's "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long"

A fantastic song from such an underrated album. One album I have no choice but to listen to from beginning to end whenever it starts.

this is pretty badass. Erykah Badu didn't do this a disservice with "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long"

Great song. Has a lot of funkiness and soul to it. And Back to the Egg is severely underrated! 5*

Funny, when someone samples something like this 1979 classic; it practically goes hidden. Nice to see it revived! Deservedly!

Sorry to go against the trend, but this is like disappointing Stevie Wonder, from a guy who is shit at the piano.

JohnLennon100 1 year ago
@JohnLennon100 See......dude......and I promise I am not trying to be confrontational....I honestly thought the large majority of the Beatles music was simple minded soft shit.....McCartney and Wings blow the Beatles away in my opinion....Lennon was a big disappointment solo.....the other two are not important.....never were
jmallton 1 year ago
@jmallton Well ...again ....that's your opinion and your entitled to it. I think you're wrong about the Beatles, and subestimating George Harrison and Ringo it's a huge mistake. I like Wings but I never thought it was a big deal compared to the Beatles. I do agree Wings were a more consistent band in the 70's than others in terms of good songs. Wings was Paul's band. It wasn't a real band 'cause Paul's name was really something after the Beatles. The Beatles made Paul, George, John and Ringo.
JohnLennon100 1 year ago
@JohnLennon100 What about Lennon ? Did he become to fucked up on drugs and Yoko to produce good music ?........I dont believe Lennon was near the artist McCartney was after the Beatles broke up .....Harrison had a few good songs and he got sued in court and lost for plagerizing one of them....LOL.....but I still like the song
jmallton 1 year ago
Sorry to disappoint you "supercooled" but there's no "Hammond" Organ on this track. "But I do agree Back To The Egg" was a really great album probably Wings best next to "Venus & Mars". "Baby's Request", and "Getting Closer" come to mind too. Not sure why the Album didn't do better. Holly was the best technical drummer had to date as well as Juber being the best guitarist to date, maybe even better than Robbie McIntosh, I'm kind of split on that one.
MozartsGhost5 1 year ago
Come on people.....McCartney was far more dynamic as a solo artist.....I always thougtht a lot of the Beatles songs were soft shit.......
