Wow. I kind of expected the quality of the animation to be higher in the movie as it was in DYRL vs original Macross. Some of the regular frontier episodes had crappy quality at times but the finale of Frontier was amazing.

( Not to mention a much better take on the DYRL homages )

@k12kyle , the 1st movie is the retelling of the tv series so you either watch the movie or the series (recommend watching series ) the movie has a sequel title wings of goodbye which continues the first movie. So yeah plus I would also watch the other macross series to get some references about past series. Good luck

Thought you might like this piece of information. I read in an interview with Kawamori and he said this-

"During the first movie, there's a question about whether Alto can fall for Sheryl to that extent just from saving her on their first meeting. If they'd met in the past, perhaps there's a bigger impression left in both their hearts."

So, in the 1st movie Ranka had the upper lead, but then in the 2nd movie they added the childhood memory of Sheryl, to push Alto into loving Sheryl.

I still think Kawamori decided AltoxSheryl because of the fanbase for that couple... truly sucks. AltoxSheryl fans are saying 'Well AltoxRanka are childhood friends in the 1st movie' to back up that it would have still been AltoxSheryl in the end, even without the childhood memory. ><
