  • In the late 70's when I went to college in the states (Miami) i use to like listening to this guy

  • Farwell my friend. You introduced me to R&R in 1964, when I was 8 years old. I grea up in Delray Beach, listening to you. I went on to make a career out of live production, learned to play drums, guitar and Keyboards, and currently design P.A. systems. I look back and trace the genesis to you. Sail easy brother. You did your part to change the world.

  • Thank you Rick for the memories!!!!!

  • After much searching, I am finally able to answer my own posted question. It was covered by artists a mile long, but Rick Shaw closed his show with Ray Peterson's version. Now I'm out to find a copy for myself.

  • @cdrobson Thanks for finding the correct version of Good Night My Love. Listening to it again brought back a flood of memories.

  • "R-I-C-K. R-I-C-K. R-I-C-K. Aw, Shaw!" I grew up listening to Rick Shaw on WQAM and have nothing but great memories of his radio shows. Thank you, Rick, for bringing so much great entertainment and fun to our generation.

  • Very moving. Great guy.

  • There have been a number of great radio DJ's in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area since the 1950's, but none greater than Rick Shaw (Jim Hummel). I was "addicted" to rock n' roll from the age of 7, and Rick's arrival in Miami was memorable in that he achieved near immediate status as "our" nightly guide thru the myriad of pop tunes that defined the age. Every night, but especially Saturday! That he was able to parlay that into a 50 year career positions "Rick" as a true radio Legend. Rock On, Jim!

  • search WAXY on youtube for more Rick Shaw

  • very touch! goodbye Rick.

  • Rick Shaw was a fixture of my life from WQAM to his Saturday Hop dance show that I got to dance on three times in my school years. I will always remember him does not matter how old I get it was part of my growing up in South Florida and everytime I hear the song Good Night My Love I always think of how Rick ended his show every night.

  • @lindamtrutt Does anyone know who the group/vocalist was that sang Goodnight My Love that he always played? I want to get the same recording.

  • WoW!! Rick Shaw; I was 6 years old my big brother was 14, into girls and in a band. I am 54 now and my big brother is no longer with us. But my memories of my brother and I listening to Rick Shaw on the radio, together, will always be with me. Thanks Rick...

  • Rick n Suds! Rick n Suds! Rick n Suds Rick n Suds...Rick n Suds...Rick n Suds!!!

  • I grew up listening to him on "Tiger Radio" in Ft lauderdale. The guy is a legend.

  • I grew up listening to Rick Shaw. He was part of my life. In those days, disc jockeys were local celebrities. What the mp3 player is today, transister radios were in those days. Our first form of portable music. What more can I say?

For those who might like to better understand the role that DJ's played in our lives in those days, find the movie "Telling Lies In America" with Kevin Bacon.

  • @bvscfanatic I was lucky enough to be on the Saturday dance show he emceed, I think it was on Channel 4. I got to dance with Roby Yonge to open the show. What a thrill for a 13-year-old. You're right about how DJs were the local celebrities. They even had fan clubs. I was president of the one for Stu Bowers. Remember "Tiger in a Mustang"? A powder blue, brand new '65 Mustang convertible. Great days!

  • I invited Rick Shaw to speak at Broward Community College in 1985. He came into our buisness class and spoke. In a personal interview I found him to be the most sincere person I could ever hope to meet. He was simple and very intelligent. I really had no idea he had been involved with so many radio and television shows. He was juat a great guy. It was 100 yards through the grass to his car. I walked him and we said nothing. He told me I didn't have to. I could not resist.

  • Who gives a crap what you think EVER. Did you ever meet Rick? Do you know him? You're nothing more than a junk yard dog. You're no Hemingway either pearlyfool.

  • @conkyjoe

SPOT ON Conkyjoe, Jim Hummel was a icon for almost 47 years in south Florida & will go down in history as a radio Legend.

But I do like Jesse Belvin version of "Goodnight My Love" better - other than that one small hick-up, it's All good!!

~ Chanye ~ Now in San Diego, California

  • Surely you don't know him.

  • Aw, that was sad. =~..( Being in SC, I never heard him on air. But he was very well read. I bet he was a cutie when he was younger, 'cause he's a cutie now.

  • @LeakFreak

Yes he was a cutie pie!

  • many many thanks for posting...very very moving.

  • I remember Rick Shaw(aka,James Hummel) in 1959 at WCKR 610 am,just before he went to WQAM,and later to WFUN,and lets not forgot WAXY,he is a great guy, when my group,The Chevelles moved from NYC to Hollywood Fla,he played our music and set us up with The Battle of The Bands in Fort Lauderdale's War Memorial Auditorium,he has always been a great friend, and he always put on the best shows,he is the original Rick Shaw,Sincerely,The Chevelles/The Echoes.

  • WAXY and Crazy Greg Budell. They were like heckle and Jeckle. Those were the real days of the nutty topless car wash Fort Lauderdale style. And who could forget the topless donut shop. Man those were the days.

  • There wa Magic Bus the first FM rock station in Miami then it was change to SHE .....Magic Bus was not political correct name with the incoming war on drugs "big joke"...

  • He is really good.

  • What a great piece and yes it brought me to tears! I haven't heard "Goodnight my Love" for a long time but it seemed just like yesterday! I remember falling to sleep every night listening to Rick Shaw closing....certainly brought back alot of memories! Sue, Coral Shores High School, Islamorada

  • @keysbrat Exactly - me too. Do you happen to know the name of the vocalist or group that played Goodnight My Love on his show that he aired every night?

  • @cdrobson

    Yes, it was Ray Peterson.

    LOVE that song.

  • Rick was the MC at our Gables 30 year reunion - it was a blast from the past. Rick confided in a few of us that he always loved doing events at Gables and Miami Beach because we had the best looking girls.

Rick's voice was a fixture in our lives back then and no one who came of age in the 60s in the Miami will ever forget him.

  • @sharefun I couldn't agree more. His voice was THE voice of radio from the time I was a small kid here in Miami. I was born in the Gables in 1960, and grew up listening to Rick. Got to meet him once

  • To a thirty- year transplant to SoFL and a fan of WAXY and Magic, the voice of Rick Shaw is unmistakably recognizable. Watching this made me realize the debt owed him for continually serving me delight and solace on a platter.

...you want to find the truth in life...don't pass music by....

  • Aw... Rick Shaw! God bless! xoxoxo!

  • oh man majic 102.7 I miss you

  • When I was a kid, my father was chief engineer at WAXY 106, the station that Rick Shaw was working at. Rick was always one of the coolest people you'd ever have the pleasure of meeting. Nice to see he's remained the class act he was back then. Great guy, and a true legend of radio.

  • Did "Magic" fire Rick?

  • I didn't realize that Rick Shaw was so old and been in the biz since "back in the day". I listen to 102.7 FM occassionally (only in my 20s so bear with me!) but I always thought that he had a great radio voice. Nice to see that he made a big impact on so many people in Miami...unfortunately most FM stations are now just another station owned by some big broadcasting company playing the same playlist of songs around the country...gotta go to the underground/pirate stations now for local flavor!

  • A Wolfman Jack Twitter tweet by @60s got me thinking "whatever happened to" about Rick.. Beyond the irreplaceable music, Rick's been a forever hero for having accepted a very humble letter years ago.. The letter led to him doing one of his lunchtime dedication shows to my father who was retiring from Metro-Dade Fire at the time..

Shoo'.. Haven't even started the video, and I'm starting to ball like a little baby.. Don't know what you've got, Rick, but, based on the comments, GOOD SHTUFF..! :))

  • This Rick Shaw was never on KFRC/610 in SFO. Great station tho'.

  • Different Rick Shaw. The Rick on KFRC passed away a few years back.

  • @conkyjoe No, but this Rick Shaw WAS indeed on WCKR AM Radio 610, Miami, FL

  • Rick you were the best at KFRC 610 in S.F. Bay Area..you will be missed!!

  • of course there was a Rick Shaw on KFRC. I heard him with my own ears.

    Just not this guy.

I've heard there were many Rick Shaws. Maybe this one from Miami was the original.

  • @caldm Wrong Rick Shaw. The one from KFRC died a number of years ago.

  • WOW! I have watched this video hundreds of times, and it still brings a tear to my eye. I first heard Rick on WQAM back in '62 when I was still a schoolchild. I got to meet him finally in 1968, and he inspired me to get into radio. I started working in Ft. Lauderdale shortly after. Rick has continued to be an inspiration to me and countless others. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT YEARS!!!

    Bob Lyons

    On-air Personality

    Helena, Montana

  • Hi Bob, Are you "THE" Bobby Lyon's from WQAM's "The Lion's Den???!!!" I'm betting..."YES!!!"

  • You have that correct. Also was on WSHE-FM for what seemed a lifetime. Now I am having fun (and working) in MONTANA

  • Thanks for the response! Amazing! I do indeed recall WSHE. That also means you were the proud(?) owner of a hmmm...1952 VW? Or was it a 1949? It did have the 2-piece rear window didn't it?! You have a brother named Paul, & I last saw you at the DiPasquale residence around 1964. They lived on S.W. 7th Terrace in Hallandale, FL. Yes...??? Glad to hear you are (as Dion DiMucci once sang in 1961): "Havin' Fun" Wonder if he (D.F.D.) still lives in N. Miami Bch?

  • I listened to you on KFRC the Big 610 (San Francisco). Thanks for the memories, Rick.

  • KFRC....Jack Armstrong, Don Rose, Mucho Morales, Big Tom Parker, Bobby Ocean, and many more...

  • @airjor1 Wrong Rick Shaw. The one from KFRC died a number of years ago.

  • @MovieTech That's too bad. Thank you for the correct information.

  • WOW I won an album from Rick and WAXY way back in the 70's and having grown up in Miami, this was a real treat to see. Thanks for posting this video and taking me down memory lane.

  • 1965 -- Tiger in a Mustang! "Aw, Shaw"

I'll never forget when you shook hands with Ringo Starr for the first time and he noticed the ring you wore that were the initials "RS", the same as his!

I danced with Robie on the Saturday show and was president of the Stu Bowers fan club. You all were just as big a part of my teen years as the Beatles. God Love Ya, Rick Shaw, and we certainly do! Marie, Miami native

  • I have to say, The Rick Shaw Show is a solid fixture in my youth. I was 12 yrs old and had a chance to sing on the show, along with the whole 6th grade at Plantation Park Elementary School. What a great time and memories this brings back. Thank you Rick Shaw

  • man your the best, i would always listen to this station and u would be talking, ur the best. 50 years is alot and u accomplishedd it . ur a hero, to all magic 102.7 fans... we love u

  • Rick Shaw what a legend. You sure will be missed. I remember you when I was just 6 years old and I'm 50 now.

  • Rick Shaw (George) was there for everyone in Broward, & Dade Counties. He's an A.M. Radio Icon, & was in the mix when Bob Green was on WINZ. Jim Dunlap-WQAM, Bobby Lions-WQAM, Lee Sherwood-WQAM, Robie Young-WQAM Paxton Quigley-WQAM, even Don Armstrong from WGMA in Hollywood, FL. (to name just a few). WFUN "Good Guys", etc. Rick if you're reading this, say hi to "Moonie-Pooh!" for me. Haven't seen you since 1985. Thanks for 50+ years of A.M./F.M. friendship memories!!! "Oh Pshaw!"

    AL

  • Rick, you were and always will be the best. In the sixties you helped me get through my teen years; they would have been a lot harder to endure without you. As I told you once over the phone, you, and not newsman Ralph Renick, were the voice of South Florida for me and thousands of others. Good luck and God bless (I won't say goodbye). Love, arnie113

  • I never heard of Rick before I stumbled onto these YouTube postings but I wish I had grown up with him. In a way I did, because his kind of professionalism and positive contact with his community was the coin-of-the-realm in '60s AM radio all over the country. These Top 40 jocks were our friends and they were our conduits to the music that was shaping us, just as they were shaping us.

  • Wow....what can one say? This man rocks!

  • One of the most distintive voices I've ever heard. Sometimes the sounds would drift to the Orlando area and I always knew who it was. You will surely be missed. Andi NMHS class of 1968

  • Don't forget, Rick was also on WAXY!

  • I listened to Rick Shaw every night as a teenager in the 60s. What a wonderful time it was. God bless you Rick Shaw.

  • Rick Shaw has been my DJ hero since I 1st heard him in late 50's, through high school and every time I return to south Florida for visits. Last year when we were in Hollywood for my 40th SBHS reunion, the Sun Sentinel ran an article on Rick - I picked up 3 copies. The airwaves will no longer resonate with that wonderful voice, wealth of knowledge & experience of true R&R. Rick Shaw was, is & ever will be THE BEST.

  • The end of an era in South Florida.

Martha Class of 67 McArthur High.

  • All I can say is R-I-C-K, R-I-C-K, .....Ah Shaw!!!!!

A legend to all in South Florida. Jean Smith < Stranahan 1965

  • Grew up with you and want you to know - "Thank you for the memories"!!

  • Good golly, Miss Molly! When I close my eyes and listen to that distinctive (and beautiful) voice, 40 plus years simply fall away! Rick, like it or not, you are an icon. God bless and...keep on rockin'!

  • I was in schools in S.Florida from 1955 till 1965. We listened to Rick Shaw every night. He was Mr.Rock & Roll. He will be missed on the airwaves as another icon from my past slips away.. We're all getting older. God bless Ricky Ticky and Good night...

  • I enjoyed listenening to Rick Shaw thru my high school years. This was a very moving and wonderful send off that brought a tear to my eye. It was an end to a wonderful era for me. I remember at my 30 yr reunion, Rick, gave me a silver penny and we spoke for quite a long time on his new ventures, etc. I will never forget him. He is a wonderful human being and will always be part of my youth. That was when life was simple, clean and wonderful !!

  • We Love you Rick!

  • You are the best and will be missed. We love you.

  • I remember listening to Rick Shaw on WAXY 106 when I was in high school. Good luck to you, Rick. Thanks for the memories.

  • I once did a commercial with Rick and 2 other members of my band for the Slak Shak in N. Miami. He was the mainstay of AM rock n' roll radio in South Fl in the '60 - I listened to him every day with his banter with the Lone Ranger and Tonto, Chicken Man and the rest. An era has surely come to an end. Damn I'm getting old!

  • Thank you for capturing and sharing this watershed moment in South Florida radio history. As when WVTJ's Ralph Renick said "Good night, may the good news be yours" for the last time in March, 1985, after a 35 year run as News Director/Anchor of Channel 4, Rick Shaw's goodbye represents the end of another era in broadcasting. Ralph Renick remains a television legend. Rick Shaw was and will always be the icon for radio.

  • Thank you... there are no words... :)

  • Great stuff, Dude. Thanks for posting this! :O)
