So if the red-line rule didn't exist, goalies could easily score because they're untouchable. I'll answer your second question with a question; did you REALLY just ask why a referee knows a rule about the sport that he referees ? ...

@gustavalmius it comes from way way back in hockey when goalie pads weren't all the much different from skaters and their sticks weren't as big as they are now. they used to join the play alot so they made the rule. totally out of date now since goalie pads now look like what the swat guys wear when they go to dismantle a bomb.

Seriously, they should fix that rule. Goaltenders should be able to cross the red line with the puck. It would just be amazing to watch a goaltender do what Roy did here. I mean, goaltenders have scored goals on the other side of the redline but have been called off - it's a ridiculous rule.

That rule should be abandoned. I mean, if goalie wants to gone head to head against the other goalie, why not let him? The rule should be changed, that if a goalie is outside of his defending side of the rink, he is fair game.

@Lapancia91 have you ever seen a goalie get hit, it's an instant fight. if they abandoned this rule and goalies started doing this, there would be so much time wasted and the NHL is trying to speed up the game. also if a goalie is fair game when playing like this, imagine how many goalies will be stretched off the ice. just look at the Lucic on miller. TBH I think if a goalie is gonna play like a skater they should be fair game, but then if someone hits your goalie then you would protect them.

I personally don't think it's a stupid rule. Goalie's job is to do just that, goal tend. If he goes too far wide from the net, imagine if Gretsky actually got the puck from him and was on a break away. Hell he wouldn't even need to be on the breakaway cause he could just shoot the puck from where he was standing since the net isn't guarded. But this is still hilarious no doubt.
