  • Margeret Mc. this is your song.

How I miss the WSIA in Cleveland, life was good and I didnt even know it.

  • @robingale100 no, Liam was. No question.

  • R.I.P Liam :(

  • lovely song

  • This is a song that goes from beauty to tragedy in one line and the lines,"the dutch man still wares wooden shoes, sometimes he thinks hes still in rotterdam" are trully that when u think the old man is a shellshock victim of the bombing of rotterdam by the nazi,s always evokes an image of being in holland on a chill autumn day ,amazing stuff ,rip tommy and liam never forgoten

  • @DJnaturalselecta great words, thanks!

  • @DJnaturalselecta Not sure how much of that history was really in this song. Mostly I feel it is about married love and old man loving Margeret. But just so everyone else knows: the Germans called the Dutch Royal family on the telephone and threatened to bomb Rotterdam to hell unless they surrendered. They surrendered and the Germans bombed Rotterdam anyway. There was no time for evacuation.

  • I find this song cornie but I like the chorus.

  • Greatest love song ever written

  • This is such a hauntingly beautiful love song about love that truly lasts forever.

  • at least liam could sing not like dylan who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket,

could write but thats about it.............

  • please do not try to compare keith harkin to tommy makem harkin couldnt lace tommys boots

  • one of the best singers ever, just love the melody and the voice, mackem was the true star of the clancy brothers though

  • I saw Makem and Clancy for the first time in the Gaeity Theater in Dublin back in 1982, as an American teen on a student program. It was an absolutely magical experience, listening to the audience join in on every song, and I will never forget it.

  • @morrisspid I was at that concert too and indeed it was absolutely fantastic.

  • I think every girl should strive to be a Margaret, she knows what true love is, not this passing lust crap they many love songs are about. Sticking by her man when times are good and when they are bad.

  • It´s not what Bob Dylan said about Liam Clancy. It´s what Liam Clancy said about Bob Dylan.

  • Love it; play it....

    xxxxx

    Majella Murphy

  • I first heard the Clancy's at he Playboy club In Miami I'd never heard the name "Liam" till then I so loved the name I named our son Liam .r I remember hearing Michael Smith sing this song when we played the Flick so long ago .Both Liams gone now I'm singing along and remembering

  • Legend

  • Pretty awesome stagecraft from Liam too, so sad they're all gone now

  • This lovely song brings me to tears. Saw Keith Harkin sing this tune. He brings a natural sweetness to the song. The Heritage cd/dvd released feb 22. You will love Keith version. He has such a winning way to this and any other song. Great talent.

  • @Ellie3625 totally agree. Heritage is wonderful dvd & cd. Keith does great justice to everything he sings.

Of course Phil Coulter gets alot of credit for his arrangements. Thanks for your comments.

  • Keith Harkin's version is simply beautiful!

  • For all of my fellow Celtic Thunder fans who saw Keith do that amazing rendition of this song on tour: The Heritage CD and DVD are being released on February 22, and are now available to pre-order on Amazon.com. :)

  • Some 'Folk' rule, the roost!

  • This song reminds me of "Daisy a Day."

  • @sandayheath59 I agree The only "problem" is that, as great as he is on traditional songs, no one genre can hold his talent! He's a born singer/natural musician/cross-genre performer, as well as a principled and decent human being . He respects his gifts and those who've so warmly welcomed them. We'll see lots more of Keith Harkin, and he'll handle stardom well.

  • The Dutchman as sung by Keith Harkin moved me to tears....totally amazing, no one has ever done this song as well as he. Took my breath away. It was the stand out song of Celtic Thunder's Heritage for me...that and Whiskey in the Jar. Keith is destined to be a Superstar!!

  • Just wait till you hear Keith Harkin sing this haunting song! I heard him tonight in Clearwater, Florida -- spellbinding. Watch for the Celtic Thunder "Heritage" CD soon.

  • @joycemax32 he did do an amazing job. I can't wait for it to be released in March

  • epic stuff

  • @peter1886 Flag as spa

  • cmon tipperary all ireland champions and this boy does the sountrack all good

  • I'm sorry to be a downer, but every YouTube video of Liam contains a comment about the Bob Dylan quote. I for one don't think that any justification is needed, from Bob Dylan or anyone else, to tell us that Liam was a wonderful man, a wonderful musician, and a wonderful storyteller.

Rest in Peace, Liam, you are missed always.

  • @ShaneAcoustique Thankyou for posting this, because I was about to write the same (also in reference to Phil Ochs videos) but I just didnt have the energy

  • @Karlnonac Thanks; me too. Liam and Phil were the kind of musicians that Dylan pretends to be. It is no compliment to read some comment that attention-whore made about them.

  • Beautiful, I hope they are together now singing with the Angles

  • Old love might not have the passion of youth, but it aquires a depth over the years. What can be more valuable than this - to love dearly and to love long.

  • Very beautiful song, thank you♫ *****♫.

    Marcy ✿

  • brilliant...pure brilliant

  • Beautifully sung--Michael Peter Smith wrote this in 1968, one of my favorite singers, Steve Goodman, popularized it. This is a beautiful, heart-felt rendition of it.

  • @peter1886 well said... although us taigs should take that as an insult I see it as a compliment.... Thank you.

  • @peter1886

And another person willing to use YouTube to show the world how absolutely ignorant and backwards they are. Thank you Peter for shining the light on your prejudice.

  • @peter1886 a tipperary taig ill have u no wheres there a hun cunt whos a patch on this

  • @peter1886 you sad evil wee prick

  • @peter1886 Get out of the village man

  • Pure Class, what a performer.

  • welldone MrLukem96 for knowing what ballad singing and the loss the greats means to irish people in our fair country and all over the world.

  • My Dutchman has just passed away. This song will always bring back good memories.

  • For the little teardrop in my eyes :-)

  • am very concerned about the future of irish ballad singing.

have lost some of the best. makem, clancy, drew and kelly to name but a few.dont appear to have anyone to follow in thier footsteps.

  • @imaballadeer

Check out The High Kings and Celtic Thunder, they have lots of videos here on YouTube.... you may be pleasantly surprised. :o)

  • i agree, there seems to be very little out there..

  • @imaballadeer ......so am i and im only 14

  • Suaimhneas ar do mháthair

    agus do theaglach freisin

  • Just lost my beautiful Irish mother. Played many Irish toons at her memorial service. Clancy brothers/Tommy makem were her favorites! She is running through the green grass and we will bring her back to Ireland when we can! Legally I hope!!We will all have a Guinness on Mom!! R.I.P. MOM!!!

  • @rebaler2

    RIP your mom.

  • Lovely song....

  • when I was a child my mum used to take me on her knee and sing this. I was immersed in Makem and Clancy from a young age and as I grow older, the feelings grow with me... this is like a reunion with an old old friend. RIP Liam.

  • @wheelzoffire1 Well put. I was exactly the same and it has the ability to move me like no other music!

    Regards, Andrew.

  • The joy of my life was meeting you in the Goldin Grill in donygal i asked you will you sing this song The Duchman you said its on the card BUT i will look for you as i sing it.. Thank you Sir.. you will always be with me and my partner long may you live in all our thaughts.. rip... Googie...

  • Wow what a wonderful performance of a classic song.

Bob Dylan said once that Liam Clancy was the finest folk singer he had heard.

    RIP

  • This is my favorite song at the moment.....it's so poignant I almost feel like crying and at the same time rejoicing in the old couples love. Liam Clancy is my only favorite singer! Beautiful song and singer!

  • I have been listening to your music for more than 30 years. RIP.

  • Fantastic stuff, I'm relatively young but I totally appreciate it , sorry bmahon10 your statement isn't totally true, its still there :)

  • saw liam live in cork. a storyteller and a voice to guide you through its tale. sleep well liam, me ould pal.

  • no i dont mind you saying so chiefmarge , thankfuly we live in a free country and we all have the right to free exspessions and believes. I did not say the only thing about being Irish was folk music , but its one of them . one more of the good things we are losing.

  • Thank you for posting this performance.

My husband and I used to sing along to another version of this song. Tomorrow it will be four years since he died, and I will play this for him.

"Long ago, he used to be a young man ..."

  • @skdadl2

What you said is very moving. May God bless you x

  • To Chioefmarge

making the economy or materialism the central organising principles then leads to mass immigration and cultural change. It often leads to intermarriage.

Even the cultural pluralism that occurs with mass immigration changes a country....have you heard of the OPutnam Report on the -ve impact of diversity.

Suggest you also read Kevin MacDonald's The Culture of Critique (2002) on why traditional forces are outgunned in the public debate.

  • @calengr1 i believe your "apparent" education has gummed up your mind with shite. blood is blood and i don't reckon you've seen yours in awhile, nor washed another man's off your hands. the irish diaspora is more widespread than most folk think, and the youth of the uk, america, and ireland are facilitating a resurgence of our language, culture, and especially our music.

  • Just discovered this gem of a song recently - first class

  • there will never be another liam clancy sadly , we Irish have lost all the good things of old. like Irish folk songs ,and Liam was the ultimate folk singer. we have forgoten what being irish is all about. We got caugh up in all material wealth and belived that would make us happy. How wrong we were. and year by year we see irsh culture die before us , what will we do when next gernations dont even know what Irish music is. We will no loner be Irish.

  • Sorry but I strongly disagree. Being Irish has nothing got to do with knowledge of Irish folk music. Just because we may have got swept up in an affair with material goods does not make us any less Irish.

That statement was complete crap if you dont mind me saying

  • Brings a tear to the eye; we will never see their likes again. Wonderful stuff! I'm so pleased to have lived in their times

  • well done lads.... ye're an example to us all....

    All the best,

    Majella Murphy

    xxx

  • sleep well mr. clancy.

  • one of my good friends let me listen to this. I'm happy he did because its beautiful... makes me miss my hometown even more tho

  • Beautiful and touching! I'm so sad to learn of Liam's recent passing. He and Tommy gave so much of their talent to the world. I saw them in concert together years ago, and it was a very memorable evening. May they both RIP.

  • Great stuff men - RIP Liam and Tommy

  • Love this song, best version of it, will be greatly missed, a Irish gentleman out and out, RIP

  • Rest in Peace Liam

  • Two great Irishmen RIP .. Sean Armagh

  • bless ya liam, we're all mad. your mad in the right way. the gates will be open and they'll all be glad of your company.

  • lovely song rip liam amen

  • Liam, you left us a rich musical heritage that will cause you to live forever in our hearts and minds. New generations will continue to discover your talent, your wit and your humanity. Thanks for all the wonderful melodies and memories.

    ~Éamon

  • R.I.P

  • Legend. You'll live forever in our thoughts.. Auld Ireland has lost one of heroes..

  • "We linger in your shadow,

a legacy of songs to savor

while you have risen to a new consciousness

    where music is imagined

and words are scattered among the stars"

    - John Sheahan to Luke Kelly

and from us now to Liam.

    Rest in Peace.

  • Sorry to see you go Liam. Thanks for it all.

  • I call this my song from today on I sing it in your memory Liam

    Rest in Peace

    Jim

  • I wanted to say 'goodbye Liam and thanks so much for all you've given us.' This, my favourite spot on all of youtube, seems like as good a place as any to do so. I'm now going to watch it again - for the millionth time I think. But it will mean more than ever. RIP

  • A beautiful song sung by two of Ireland's finest musicians, may they rest in peace.

  • RIP MR LIAM CLANCY

  • Ah the memories, once a year in the Sliver Slipper after the August race meeting in Sligo. They always had a cup of tea and a slice of apple tart during intermission. Once a year a life time of memories, Rest in Peace both of you.

    Gary Byrne

  • We will not say goodbye, Liam, for we will hear you singing wherever you are now. Your great heart will carry the song to us.

    Slan

  • Liam and Tommy.

  • RIP.

  • Slan Liam, RIP

  • Slan Liam

  • R.I.P Liam one of the best

  • RIP Liam

  • a true legend.

    R.I.P

  • R.I.P Liam Clancy - my heart is broken to think we will never hear you sing again , goodbye to one of the greatest

  • Let us go to the banks of the ocean

Where the walls rise above the Zuider Zee

Long ago I used to be a young man

And dear Margaret remembers that for me

  • Beautiful song. I first heard it on Peter Daly's "Music of the Emerald Isle" show on WRKL around 1979. I taped it, but the tape is disintegrating. Nice to hear it again.

  • I. find this very moving. I first heard it in the 60s by Maurice Moriarty. Later I moved to Germany where I met many War wounded. Some of these men did not know where they were.

  • I learned this song perhaps 25 years ago. I have not listened to it for many years and I have to say I understant it now more than then, a beautiful love song full of compassion and companionship.

  • Goodman sang it. But Michael Smith wrote it.

  • No, Michael Peter Smith wrote this

  • Heard this first from a February 1984 recording of the Maritime Radio "Eric McEwan Show" given to me by Anna MacDonald of Marion Bridge , Cape Breton . Great memories, great song..

  • beautiful

  • I heard it from Steve Goodman...it is one of my favorites.

  • This is just a gem. I am 23 and am reliving the Irish folk my father used to play when i was a youngn on the way to hockey. Simply Beautiful.

  • Excellent only Liam Clancy could put so much feeling into this song thanks for posting

  • One of the ALL-TIME Classic love songs. It is a rare work of art.

  • A better love song might never be written. Anyone can write about "I want you so bad and I could never leave you" and that sort of romance, but unconditional love like in this song is another thing altogether.

  • I love this song which has a beautiful liric. It makes me feel happy when listening to it, perhaps because I'm dutch living abroad and thinking about Holland. Thanks Liam Clancy and may you rest in peace. The Zuider Zee doesn't exist anymore since a long time. Land has been reclaimed from the Zuidersee since more then 60 years. The part which remains beyond the Afsluitdijk is called Ijselmeer. Nevertheless the song keeps the old name in good memory...

  • Can't get this song out of my mind! Brilliant version from Clancy, and although the "Great Tommy" looks bemused when Liam mentions what loves means to him,it is a classic. What an intro, and I defie you to listen to the lyrics and not feel touched!

  • You should hear the original.the man that wrote it.Michael Smith,It always brings a tear to my eyes.

  • One of Liam's best...and Tommy's expression when Liam talks about the "essence of the love song" is priceless!

  • haha it really is

    amazing, just amazing.
