Hey there Dave! You could select a lot worse of an urban shtf knife than the bk2. I love all things becker so your vid warmed my heart a lil :). Keep up the great work!
And if you have to fly somewhere, what sort of tools will you have at your disposal. As you get off the plane, are you going to have a sheath knife strapped to your belt? I think not.
@Kayakwinds Don't fly.. haven't for about 14 years now.. If I DID have to fly.. I know how to make things from the crashed airplane.. If it DIDN't crash.. I would have my gear in my suitcase underneath the plane.. or would buy it new where I landed
Well, what can I say? You seldom fly on airplanes and you don't often wear suits. But many others do. I lost luggage at an airport a couple of months ago; I still don't have it back. As for buying gear upon arrival, that may be just what you will have to do. And that may not be as quick and easy as you hope.
I'm not trying to be argumentative; rather, I'm trying to point out that many survival plans can be disrupted by unexpected events.
Maybe your personal emergency will strike on a business trip. Maybe you will be traveling in the car of a friend who has no emergency gear. You not only have to worry about yourself, but you have a moral obligation to at least try to help your friend who is absolutely clueless about the issues surrounding personal survival. The plot thickens!
Bad things can happen when we are away from home and our essential gear. So when you are on your lunch break, walking down a city street, take an inventory of what survival tools you have on your person. What would you do if there were a disaster? How quickly could you assemble an assortment of vital items? Water bottle, twine, tarp, fire starter—these most basic supplies. Understand that it might not be a world wide disaster confronts you; it might be your own personal disaster
Just one note -- I've actually spent 30 minutes trying to stick knives through car hoods, doors and trunks -- it is MUCH harder than people think. And, one needs to have a flat pommel, in order to brace a thumb or second hand against, and gloves are very highly recommended, because hand slippage is an everpresent risk.
Great video David. Have been using the Becker BK-2 for several years now and it is a true workhorse. I don't do urban either so haven't used it in that environment but it's great in the bush. Thanks
Dave, great choice on a URBSHTF knife, Beckers are die hard survivors for sure. I have never broke one, even when trying. For me, since a knife fight is highly likely in this scenario, I would ALSO take the SOG Agency. My Gerber Multi tool is my EDC so that would be with me for what ever event we may encounter, good or bad. Remember all, what ever works for YOU is best for YOU. I have most of the Beckers and they are good solid tools for the price.
I agree Dave, the BK2 is a great knife and would be my urban SHTF knife too. I even use it pretty regularly in the low desert as small wood processing doesn't require an axe.
I have and love the Becker BK2. However, in Seattle it is illegal to carry a blade that is longer than 3.5". It's also illegal to carry a fixed blade (regardless of blade length). Rules out the BK2 for me. The only way you can carry that is if you have it non-concealed (on a backpack) and you are in route to an outdoor/wilderness function (camping) where the knife would be used. I'm not sure of the exact knife laws in other states, but I imagine that most urban cities might have similar laws. :(
@TheUrbanPrepper I think in a SHTF scenario, I would not be too concerned with laws of ownership and use of the blade of your choice. I would never advocate for anyone else to break laws but for me, me and mine + friends come first and technical indices of law second if our lives are in danger.
@PracticalBushcraft1 I just saw that you added an annotation to clarify that it is really an Urban "SHTF" Knife and not an "EDC" knife. In that case, great choice! :) When I originally heard "Urban EDC Knife" I immediately started thinking about the legality of carrying that knife as part of ones EDC. Thanks for the reply and clarification.
@TheUrbanPrepper Yeah, some of these specific designations in some of the tags are sometimes mistaken for something else. As my sign behind my desk at work says "Admit nothing, Deney it all and Blame someone else" I have actually tried practice knife fighting with my Beckers and they just do not handle well, like fighting with a crowbar, if you connect, you are breaking something, but I prefer the SOG Agency for an actual knife fight cut n slash. I always have my older Gerber Multi as my EDC.
BTW, i have one of those BK2's also, I hope both you & I, or anyone else, never have to use one other than to open a can o beans, or do some woods-lore stuff. :)
Thanks for taking the time to share the video. I am happy to see you all are doing well!
:)
P.S.- It's great that your daughter is helping out the deer as a rehab volunteer. As an avid hunter (deer included), I appreciate the time anyone takes, to "look out for the future" in regard to the outdoors & wildlife, & being good stewards of the land & all it holds... & that includes people too! When we can... ;)
@TheCaryeHoy Leatherman would be good as a backup in a SHTF scenario.. if would definitely make a good EDC in the city.. as it is unobtrusive.. I carry the "Surge" all the time
@warmachine1770 No.. We wouldn't keep a deer as a pet.. Echo is a rehab that our daughter (A licensed rehabber for the State of Missouri) saved. He just hasn't found a herd yet.. so he stays around right now.. He'll probably leave in the Spring

kool vid nice knife , call me paranoid but the only two stores in my town that sold knifes, guns , cross bows & fishing gear have both closed down ......
Great choice – I work in "the city" and I don't see any reason why a resourceful person couldn't carry that blade almost anywhere unnoticed. Unless you were going into a court house, airport, etc.
the BK2 aka the becker train wrecker ! a great choice for urban use as it is concealable do a degree if needed and its tough enough to pry open doors and cut thruogh metal which you will encounter in an urban setting thank you for another great video .
my EDC knifes of choice will always be SOG...i mean i have all the cool knifes at home for camping or bugout. but just for edc the Sog line has always worked for me.
Great video and great knife, Bro! God bless. I'm glad that you are on facebook. I don't know much about it though. I just use it to post pictures of family and my interests. john
I'm afraid this video entirely missed the point of the tag. The point was not to post a knife that lent itself to urban survival, but instead to choose a blade to add to your urban EDC. With that in mind the size is a factor. Personally I carry a similar knife, but Kentucky laws a a bit lax concerning length so long as the blade isn't concealed. However most states have laws about "concealed carrying" that eliminates neck knives as an option without a permit. It seems folders take the vote.
@tlawson Then I misunderstood the point Bro.. It said.. what knife would I want in an Urban SHTF scenario. If the SHTF.. There is no more worrying about what others think.. and a folding knife wouldn't do what I consider important in a SHTF scenario. I'm thinking.. breaking out of a car wreck.. being trapped in a destroyed building in a tornado, etc. I apologize if I missed what was the intended purpose. It wasn't what was my understanding from the tag "SHTF Urban Survival Knife"
@BushcraftOnFire Actually I think I misunderstood. I thought it said "Urban Everyday carry." In which case you'd have to consider other people and local laws, with the point being that the EDC would be something that was a nice mixture of acceptable and functional. Like I said, I do carry a large survival knife as part of my EDC, but its personal preference and I have caught flak about it from law enforcement before. I didn't mean to diss your video, and the BK2 is great kit. Just misunderstood.
@tlawson1992 Not a prob Bro.. I fixed the title to reflect what I actually meant.. I was in a hurry titling the video. And I AGREE WITH YOU! In an EVERYDAY EDC.. I would have a pocket knife.. with some a bit more stout in my kit.. DEFINITELY not open carry. I never would think you were dissing us :) You have been a loyal sub for a LONG time.. and we appreciate you!
I think that you need to consider what sort of knife is appropriate to carry when wearing dress clothes and/or riding public transportation. And I don't think your video addresses those issues. In such situations, a folding knife or possibly a neck knife would be the answer.
@Kayakwinds With all due respect Bro.. I won't be in dress clothes in a SHTF scenario.. nor will I be riding the subway or bus. I generally would carry a smaller knife right now.. that was more concealable.. but not in a major crisis situation.
@BushcraftOnFire Personally, I have no idea where I will during an emergency situation. I try to expect the unexpected. But when I have business in the city, I have to dress appropriately. That precludes a large sheath knife that is too large to be worn as a neck knife. So it will be a neck knife or a folder with a pocket clip.
@BushcraftOnFire What I think Kay was talking about was an everyday carry not a Post-SHTF scenario. If it was Post-SHTF I would be full gear, but because we are in a country where laws still apply, following laws is important when considering the knife you would want to carry in the city. I carry a assisted retractable blade knife to legal length standards. I have it so sharp you can shave the hair off your arm. It may not break windows but that is what bricks are for right. lol Have a good one.
@InfantryGeek And I agree Bro.. My EDC in an urban environment right now would be what is in my EDC Kit.. a Gerber Profile.. as well as an SAK Hunter in my left front pocket.. and a Leatherman surge on my right hip. I go to Springfield with that combo all the time (and everywhere else for that matter) and have NEVER had any problems
For inside the car fine, but I don't know how folks roll where you live but around here (Southern Canada) if you were an office worker or some other similar job you would almost certainly get called into the bosses office if you came to work with that on your belt. I think most folks would stick with a folder, or at least a fixed blade that could be completely concealed with ease.
@offramp100 Yes, I think you are spot on. When it comes to carrying knives in an urban setting, as opposed to a rural one, a person has to have a different mind set. In the eyes of many, knives are totally inappropriate for an office work place. Women are especially upset when they see a fellow with a knife.
@offramp100 This wasn't (in my understanding) a knife that I would carry to work everyday.. and I agree with you that I wouldn't be taking this to my job (if I worked in the city) The response was to a SHTF SURVIVAL Knife.. so we're talking chaos and mayhem already
Hey there Dave! You could select a lot worse of an urban shtf knife than the bk2. I love all things becker so your vid warmed my heart a lil :). Keep up the great work!
