  • This scene is pivotal in showing that Stevens really did listen to the political speeches and goings-on in the house. He and Cardinal (Hugh Grant) both knew Lewis was right, while Lord Darlington allowed himself to be mislead.

    RIP, Christopher Reeve.

  • Right before Christopher Reeve became a vegetable...

  • Adamcrookedsmile - no wonder you have chosen such a name so aptly. Its not ENGLAND but GREAT BRITAIN or THE UNITED KINGDOM, you twat. Scotland is a huge contributor as the Welsh and Northern Irish are too.

  • hear, hear. Professionals. I hope they will let professionals run the US.

  • missed my point, adamcrookedsmile. 1. attack on iraq had zero to do with al qaeda- just suspicion of wmd's. 2. just because we found nothing, we dont retroactively render the initial decision wrong! that is not logical. we make decisions based on the info at hand, and as i stated, since he used chemical weapons in past, and refused to FULLY comply with inspections, you'd have to be a gullible nut to shrug your shoulders and figure there's nothing to worry about. utterly reckless.

  • Wonderful performance by Christopher Reeve; the only one in the room who understands what's going on, and how pathetic and *dangerous* the other "dignitaries" in the room are. Darlington, playing politician, being buttered up, while the professionals -- like, oh, Hitler, and Stalin -- are happy to play these little parlor games, to keep such dilletantes busy. I'll avoid the obvious (and possibly incorrect) Chamberlain comparison. Fantastic scene.

  • @occlusian Glad you stopped by to make the great comment.

  • @occlusian . agreed. the u.s. always has to bluntly confront evil, with all the mess and cost, while europe fancies itself the superior, diplomatic type and looks down on americans as a bunch of boorish, violent hayseeds. meanwhile, turns out the europeans are the morally inferior with little appetite to confront evil.

  • @ranchump

europeans are fighting along American soldiers in Afghanistan. I don't know what you think you gain by insulting your brothers-in-arms.

  • @adamcrookedsmile . european input is miniscule, esp. in fighting capacity- thats the inconvenient truth, and its galling. europe lives under u.s. umbrella of protection, but barely raises a pinky to chip in when we need her. (england excepted). they ridiculed reagan and bush as boors, and it turns out their vision was right- the soviet union crumbled, and democracy in iraq has indeed become an impetus for a wave of democracy in arab countries. thats my beef.

  • @ranchump

it's unfortunate so many British boys have to die in Iraq because GWB and Tony Blair lied about those weapons of mass destruction. Of course people with power get ridiculed, it's called freedom of speech. It's very dear to me.

  • @adamcrookedsmile . sheer nonsense. 1. saddam used chemical weapons already, and 2. pursued nuclear weapons already (destroyed by israel in 1992). he then refused FULL inspections and interviews with iraqi scientists, even under threat of war. NOT to attack under those conditions would be despicably reckless. every major democratic congressman/senator DURING CLINTON YEARS (ie before anyone heard of bush) all went on record stating that they suspected he had wmd's and were FOR regime change.

  • @ranchump

thanks for pointing out that democrat congressmen and senators were on the boat with GWB (even though events turned out to make them equally wrong on the WMD issue).

  • @adamcrookedsmile . to suggest bush and blair colluded to lie about iraq, when neither country profited (in fact they lost blood and treasure), is idiotic conspiract-theory nonsense...especially when bush was exonerated in a exhaustive investigation by a non-too-friendly opposition with FULL access to all documents, emails, memos etc. this "they lied" slogan is utterly unintellectual. no better than 9/11 conspiracies.

  • @ranchump

The problem is that nobody can can prove that GWB and Tony Blair told the truth, because no WMDs factories and huge stockpiles were ever found, beyond some shells from the 80s. Incompetence is a poor defence for GWB. Iraq is not an inspiring country to live in, tens of thousands of Iraqis have fled their country to come to my home country, Sweden. Just like people flee from North Korea. There was no link between al Qadea and Saddam, the 9-11 hijackers were mostly Saudis, not Iraqis.

  • @ranchump America has stolen billions of dollars in Iraqi oil wealth I say thats profit enough.

  • @missysummertime . are you playing dumb? what profits? iraq has been the greatest money drain for u.s. since whoknows. when did you ever hear a legit iraqi official complain about the u.s. stealing oil or profiting illegally? and if that were true, you dont think the new york times or huff post would have it on page one??? conspiracy lunatic. morons like you drive me to drink. why cant you argue the facts instead of making nonsense up that no legit media prints?

  • @ranchump Its not a conspiracy theory. Its a fact that billions of dollars of Iraqi oil went "missing" after America invaded Iraq it was reported on newsnight and the papers in the UK its just not splashed all over the news because no-one can prove where it went, but the truth is that everyone knows the US oil companies stole it, Bush put Halliburton oil comapny into business I can guarantee that Iraq's oil was a major factor in the invasion and Bush is enjoying the profits.
