@cincinatus90 yup! haha kind of funny, i imagine 17 people sitting in a room and play Lynx, and sudddenly someone of them have to go to the restroom. But instead of everyone have to pausing the game he simply flip the screen upside down (using the flip button) and hand it over to his buddy.. Wonder if Atari thinked the same? ;D
@Hageltrast haha! But really! What game can you play with 17 other people?! I mean, they advertized it so there must be at least one game capable. Do you have any idea what it might be?
I had the newer model when I was 11 which was 1991, I used to wake up an hour early on school days and play California games under my blanket in bed.. I was obsessed with it.
I remember playing this at a kiosk in Sears. Blown away by the color, I don't think the Game Gear was out yet. But then I looked at the games for it and I was not familiar with much. Amazing how big it is these days, back then, it was considered small.
@ryujijitei You can't say that atari lost on reputation because of the video game crash. Atari didn't do anything wrong to be part of the cause of the crash. The market was just oversaturated with videogames and home consoles so the market crashes. Sega was also in direct competiton to nintendo at the time, so you can't say that nintendo did anything singlehandedly but it is true it's the only survivor of the time.
Can you also flip it to the side or only left handed and right handed? In the advertisement the hold it on its side. I like how Alien vs Predator has the Waylan Yutani logo on it :)
Great system from Atari, never did get to try it. I saw kid playing one back in the day and that was my only time I ever saw one. It was so ahead of it's time (not something that Atari accomplished very often). Did Epyx design the model 2?
My brother had one of those, I played it more than he did, I used to play batman returns on it, one of the hardest games I've ever played but the music on it was awesome
Edit: I posted that before you finished the video haha, I had the pit fighter and checkered flag game, I think I had a soccer game too but man that thing was pretty cool
My brother had one of those, I played it more than he did, I used to play batman returns on it, one of the hardest games I've ever played but the music on it was awesome

I bought a secondhand one of these in 1997. It came with the battery pack which used 6 D cell batteries and latested a lot longer. Did you ever get the comlynx cable?
the atari lynx was a extreamly superpowerfull hardware for it,s time,i cut even do things like sprite scaling and polygons wich even the snes can,t do without a fxchip.
the game yosis island used the fx chip for sprite scaling, polygons and increasing speed.
I've watched and enjoyed a lot of these videos, but I really have a problem with this review. When the Lynx came out it was mind blowing. The games were awesome!!! Slime World, Warbirds, Scrapyard Dog, and Gates of Zindocon were incredible
Link up with a friend, pop in Slime world, drop a mega bomb in your buddies room, then hit the road, I promise you will shit your pants laughing when you hear the explosion come from his speaker. Sounds like Gamester is a little biased to the gameboy, I understand, I'm biased to the lynx.
Whoa buddy, over three minutes into the vid and you haven't even started the review. Not to mention your video techniques have a real lack of imagery and uncomfortable sound. I will not be watching the rest of this and my ears are thanking me because your voice is not TV worthy, or YoutTube worthy at that matter.
One one my all time Favorite games for the Lynx has to be Slime World , just an all around amazing game , if you don't have it I would get . Just Awesome !!
hey dude, I must've completely missed this video before! Thanks for the shoutout! BTW I'm doing more themes now, I did JBINEUX's new theme(I don't think it's up yet but he should have it up in a few days.
It is also interesting to note that the Atari Lynx was developed by Dave Needle and R.J. Mical, who also developed the 3DO. Both the Atari Lynx and the 3DO are great consoles, but highly underrated, mainly due to a few drawbacks like the high price, battery life, and size of the Lynx; and the high price of the 3DO. However, what really did both consoles in were the lack of third party support, and poor marketing, which both will usually kill any console within a short time.
Great review, Gamester! The Atari Lynx is one of my favorite handheld systems despite the fact that it was a commercial failure. I have a model 1, and I always saw that the headphone jack was rather unnecessary because the system only supported mono sound. I used to have a model 2, but it broke after trying to repair the speaker, which was blown out when I first got it. The model 2 is a lot better because of the stereo sound support, power indicator, and somewhat longer battery life.
I've never had the chance to play a Lynx. Never knew anyone growing up that had one, unfortunately. The sound effects in the Blue Lightning game seemed really annoying. haha
must be a problem with the top buttons over the sound ey? Might wanted to add that Game Boy was also mono while playing without headphones - which was most of the time? Fuck me it is nice for me as a left-handed!!! :D
lol I own the Lynx, but rarely played it. I can't believe I sat through your video since I already own the thing, but it's a testament to your videos that it kept me interested! Thx! hehe I almost want to dig it out of my back room.
Great review man, but theres a game u really need to add to ur collection. You need Chips Challenge. If u havent played it, then i describe it as the best puzzle game I have ever played. Its a long game too
I got an Atari Lynx a year and a Half ago, it's a model one and I didn't know it was common to find it with the paint worn off as in mine the paint is still not worn, I got it with the pouch bag. It's an amazing system and Actually I was scared by the people telling me that it was going to eat batteries like crazy but the thing actually lasts more than I thought, the only thing in which I disagree with you is the sound, it may be mono but at least in mine its loud as hell!
When you were playing Rampage it sounded like there were 2 speakers inside the single speaker grill. It's stupid putting 2 speakers in the same grill as it's stereo but the 2 speakers are not seperated enough to get a wide spectrum of sound.
Never got the chance to own one because it was SO freakin expensive back then so I got a gameboy instead. I remember the commercial of a kid playing the lynx in the school washroom lol.
Great review. Those sixteen minutes went by really quick. I remember I had the chance to play Rygar on a Lynx at my local Home Express when I was a kid.
People complain about not being able to see the screen on this system with the backlight off, but they missunderstand the function of the backlight off button. The idea was to switch the backlight off when you pause the game to save power, it was never intended to be used with the backlight off :o) Get duracell ultra batteries and it lasts a very long time, Interesting how rampage is dated 86 when it's before it was released!! shows the long history of the lynx development :o)
I never rated the lynx before i got an atari lynx 2 a few months ago, I love it now and it never gets any rest from people playing it at work, they say it's so addictive!! Do you have problems getting the batteries out of the atari lynx 2? I find it a right pain!!
The thing is that it lasted 6-7 hours on the batteries back then, run it on modern batteries and it runs for a lot longer :o)
What do you mean it's not for pockets? You just gotta be a pro like me :P
Lynx is a cool system. I've had to repair mine before, and despite it's size, weight, and how much is inside it, it's actually still quiet roomy inside the mk2. I could have seen them making a mk3 at some point had it held on.
Lemmings is a must have, and the only worth while handheld version, unless maybe you got a Nomad and a genesis version or something.
Some faves of mine are Chips Challenge, and Steel talons.
One problem, now that your a partner, is that showing game footage is something Youtube is very touchy on, so you may want to look out for that. Just giving you a heads up, you probably already know ;)
That left handed switch thing has to be the most useless feature ever. I'm about as left handed as one can be, and I never had any problems what so ever controlling the d-pad with my left hand. If anything, most often you need more precision with the d-pad than you do with the other buttons.
Nice video. I was wondering what is your opinion of Checkered flag, blue lighting, and toki. I am planning on getting two more games for my system and these are the ones I am looking at. Thank you for your time.
Nice video. I was wondering where on the stoneagegamer site do they mention the console giveaway that you mentioned in the review. I also have a Lynx and love it, I have 12 games for it so far. Thank you for your time.
I have Ninja Gaiden on my Lynx and really like it. I've had a few Lynx systems over the years because they keep breaking on me, I once had S T U N Runner, I want another copy of it because I fucking love that game. I also have PIT Fighter and I really don't like it much at all.
I have the Lynx II and I really like it, one problem with the early (flat) game cards is that at least on my Lynx II and with my copy of Electrocop, the card goes in both ways, unlike the later cards with the curved top, they only go in one way. Has anyone else had that problem. One other problem with the Lunx is that they're not made very well, they break very easily, expecilly the AC Adaptor socets on the Lynx II.
The Lynx had a great screen for its time, but alas the games weren't that great, and the system was huge, and awkward to handle. Even the smaller version 2 that came out a little later was still awkward with the way the buttons were spaced.
Great review. In the early 90's I bought a Lynx version 2 for $60us and only owned three games California Games, Pinball and Toki Going Ape Spit and were pretty fun. Since I couldn't find a place to buy more games I traded it for an SNES at a local game store.
Rampage was great! Love being able to eat people and tear up buildings (Larry looked like he was humping the building though LOL)...another great game for Lynx is Rampart...awesome strategy game. Definitely recommend getting Rampart as well
Great video....The model 2 WAS my handheld back in the day.....had a gameboy model one but once I had color there was no going back....one of my fav systems and mos def underrated.....thanks!!!
@Koolkitties Agreed. You get used to the controls. It would feel weird having them switched... even though I'm comfortable using the arrow keys on a keyboard.
awesome thanks for the shoutout. You deserve all the subs you have im glad to have helped you and that you like it. If you ever need anything else just let me know.
I've always wanted to have one of these just to pull it out on a bus or in a waiting room somewhere. Having an eight-person Lynx session would be awesome lol.
Just got my Lynx today! It may not work though, as it's in very bad shape. :-( Batteries might be a factor, too. (Hopefully, when the AC adapter for that system shows up, it'll work.)
Thanks for the new review dude, awesome as always
I was such a moron as a kid, I had the chance to buy this and instead I went for a stupid Tetris handheld because it had like 999 built in games and the lynx did not ~_~
WTF would you play with 17 other ppl on the lynx???

I'm inclined to make a video of my Lynx collection as well. Very nice review man!

I only ever played California Games but it was really good, on a Lynx model 2

The Lynx had a great screen for its time, but alas the games weren't that great, and the system was huge, and awkward to handle. Even the smaller version 2 that came out a little later was still awkward with the way the buttons were spaced.

Great review. In the early 90's I bought a Lynx version 2 for $60us and only owned three games California Games, Pinball and Toki Going Ape Spit and were pretty fun. Since I couldn't find a place to buy more games I traded it for an SNES at a local game store.

I miss my old Lynx. It had an awesome version of Klax for it. So Jason that's where my Ngage games went. Heh heh, just kidding.

Great review! Its kind of cool how the lynx could accommodate left handed players. Also, congrats on the partnership.
RegretfulRuler 1 year ago
The Lynx was ridiculously ahead of its time.
Sadly, the timeless adage of "games make the system" contributed to its third-party-lacking software library.

My brother had a lynx growing up. I found Stun Runner to be my favorite game. Rygar was pretty good too.

Jaguar...? Panther...? (I know they exist. I have a Jag.) Anyone notice that Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3 are named Jaguar and Panther in that order? XD

Glorius machine. I Had a model 1 back when they first came out. Effectively a Commodore Amiga in a box.
Never had a Model 2, but I have more Nostalgia for the model 1.
Great over-view as always Gamester!!!

@Koolkitties Agreed. You get used to the controls. It would feel weird having them switched... even though I'm comfortable using the arrow keys on a keyboard.

The Lynx also had a very unique port of Gauntlet that had a ton of oddball characters in it as well as 3rd person view. It was a very strange game.
