  • Ok if any of you want to see depressing..this show was based off of the Martin Scorcesse film called "Alice Doesn't live here Anymore" rent it..Vic Tayback is actually in the film as Mel and Flo is also in it tho not played by Polly Holliday

  • cheers to you if u were allowed to stay out until the street lights came on.

  • I agree very dark tv series...

  • Oh my goodness....depressing? Really?

I never thought of it that way I guess. A single woman trying to make it with her son: she found an apartment, got a job, and made friends. And if I remember correctly, even had a date or two. So....I'm not seeing where being depressed falls into it.

I loved the show and had the theme in my head for the last few days so I looked this up. I'm glad I did and love Linda Lavin.

  • @9696286 I agree with all that you say but the underlying tone is dark she's a waitress in a diner with a harsh boss, lives in what looks like a shoebox drives a shitbox and seems to be worried about every red cent she has or hasn't got. not to mention it sounds like she married the wrong guy hence "going through life w/ blinders on it's tough to see, I HAD to get up come out from under and look for me....it all reads dark to me.

  • @ishredu

Oh, yeah I guess I can see why someone could look at it that way. But I'm a "glass half full" kind of gal:)

  • Kiss my grits Mel!,LoL!

  • depressing no way. I would not worked for mel but they all got along like family and helped each other out. not like that today in real life. I seen all of the shows and i was depressed when it went off the air. how about some reruns . ok.

  • drpressing no way. It was great.

  • they should show this on reruns. I loved it.

  • I love the bass playing! Really groovy!

  • The show is nothing but bad memories for me too. I want to sleep or die when I see this opening and hear the theme. Cant put my finger on it, its just a bad vibe around this show. I guess Im not alone reading the comments.

  • @pressrolls sounds more like a personal problem to me

the show was "noir" but that WAS the point of it lol

  • Alice is one of the best shows ever created :D

  • It was a depressing show.I don't even remember those women ever getting a tip.

  • @MrMelgibstein I always thought is was depressing myself "noir"

  • this show was brilliant. and the theme song is amazing. she sounds great.

  • I absolutely love Linda Lavin's voice. So slinky. I just knew that she had a cd out but I can't find one anywhere. Where's the cd man?

  • this show needs to be released on dvd

  • David Shire, famed for his Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, did the music for this ... he was married to Fracis Ford Coppola's sister who kept the name Talia Shire ( Godfather, Rocky)

  • Thumbs-up!

  • work it girl. you go alice. make that town eat shit.

  • One of my favorite shows! Depressing? No way. Famine, genocide and war is depressing. "Alice" was uplifting like "Chico and the Man", "Welcome Back Kotter", and "All In The Family". "Good Times" when we all watched the same thing on TV and kids were free to play outside, not on the internet. These were my "good ole' days!"

  • hey Grand Ave and Thomas..Phx Az

  • I love this show, and find it very inspiring...Alice is my hero...whenever I'm down I think of Alice and how she started over from scratch...

And what a great voice...I love the voice...and also the lyrics of the theme song changed from the original...I love that rich voice though...this song inspires me, and so does Alice...

  • loved linda lavin's voice in this theme song...she really could belt it out!

  • This show was so depressing, what a sad existance this woman had. It was so sad. And the fact that she sings the theme song is even more depressing.

  • @ShitFromShinolla not really linda lavin had a top rated show AND did the theme song

    you call THAT depressing?

the show was mildly depressing yes, but it's the reality of many people, art mimics life etc.

  • @shred It was very sad think about it, she was all alone traveling with her only son, they had no money going cross country in an old junk heap that keeps over heating. She ends up being abused and over worked by her cave man boss at some dump hwy diner in some nowhere hick town. Her son is sad because he has no father figure and every potential husband she meets is either gay or an asshole. So she remains alone earning minimum wage with no retirement plan. Grounds for suicide.

  • @ShitFromShinolla and is also the plight of many, more now than ever before.

  • @ShitFromShinolla No, you got it all wrong. This show was uplifting. Alice eked out a good little life for herself and Tommy. They didn't have a lot, but they had enough. They made it through without handouts. They had love; they had each other.

  • That is a 1969 Ford Country Squire with a front grill of a Country Sedan or a Ranch Wagon.

All 1969 Country Squires had hide away headlights.

  • kiss my gritz..mel

  • Does anyone know if there are reruns of this show anywhere now? Last year they were on one of the cable channels here in NY, but not anymore.

  • At the end Flo was the real star of the show. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she get her own spinoff show??

  • she did it flopped though

  • @ishredu

    I remember now.

And like the Ropers and Maclean Stevenson, she should have stayed where she was!

  • GOOD SONG

  • I loved this show back in the day I liked how Mel use to always call the ladies dingy broads lol.

  • Mayul, kiss mah greeeyits!

  • LOLOLOLOL

    Hilarious. Good show..

I loved how you made "Mel" and "grits" into 2-syllable words! LOLOLOL just like she (Flo) did. hahhahahahaha

Thank you. I needed that good laugh. I really did "lol" when I read your comment. Good luck to you.

  • and because of crack...it's also increasingly the an inspiration to the increasing #'s of single dads...sad but true

  • This is more than Alice's theme it is a confidence mood booster song for women and girls who need it morning, noon and night. God is good all the time and I like it like that.

  • When will alice come out on dvd

  • id kiss flos grits anytime!

  • Kanye West should sample this song!

  • I agree that someone should sample this, the beginning has a nice beat.

  • yeah, especially 00-:25...

  • Yep, reminds me of Steely Dan every time I hear it. It's in the chords.

  • By far Linda Lavin's best vocal of the Alice theme song. Each season she re recorded it with either a new arrangement or a different set of lyrics and it got worse and worse. Here she kept the vocal mannerisms to a minimum and got the most out of the lyric, especially the line "going through life with blinders on, it's tough to see"

  • I completely agree, this version is by far the best. Her singing is excellent, as is the funky electric piano sound, very indicative of the time...

  • Thanks for Posting

  • The 70's T.V. shows kick ass. Good Times,Starsky and Hutch,One Day at a Time,The Partridge Family and the list goes on. Not like the crap they got now.

  • dated? like the twilight zone or good times or all in the family? or do you mean specifically this noisy looking clip?

  • i like it but it's just to dated to watch

  • Thanks for posting the original, or at least the the theme I'm familiar with!!

  • good times

  • was she nice?

  • I won a contest once, and the prize was lunch with Linda Lavin.

  • I love this show!

  • me too!!!

  • My girlfriend has never even heard of ALICE. I'm 34. Am I that old?

  • Yup,you and i buddy....you and i....:(

  • man this is the best song to sample

  • This certainly brings back memories! I feel so old.

  • Thank you for posting this. Loved "Alice" and Linda Lavin.

  • check out the rare outro i posted as well

    enjoy!

  • I think this is so unique, her singing was great not to many shows have the star of the show singing the theme song and ending song not even today. this is classic.....
