Ok if any of you want to see depressing..this show was based off of the Martin Scorcesse film called "Alice Doesn't live here Anymore" rent it..Vic Tayback is actually in the film as Mel and Flo is also in it tho not played by Polly Holliday
I never thought of it that way I guess. A single woman trying to make it with her son: she found an apartment, got a job, and made friends. And if I remember correctly, even had a date or two. So....I'm not seeing where being depressed falls into it.
I loved the show and had the theme in my head for the last few days so I looked this up. I'm glad I did and love Linda Lavin.
@9696286 I agree with all that you say but the underlying tone is dark she's a waitress in a diner with a harsh boss, lives in what looks like a shoebox drives a shitbox and seems to be worried about every red cent she has or hasn't got. not to mention it sounds like she married the wrong guy hence "going through life w/ blinders on it's tough to see, I HAD to get up come out from under and look for me....it all reads dark to me.
depressing no way. I would not worked for mel but they all got along like family and helped each other out. not like that today in real life. I seen all of the shows and i was depressed when it went off the air. how about some reruns . ok.
The show is nothing but bad memories for me too. I want to sleep or die when I see this opening and hear the theme. Cant put my finger on it, its just a bad vibe around this show. I guess Im not alone reading the comments.
David Shire, famed for his Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, did the music for this ... he was married to Fracis Ford Coppola's sister who kept the name Talia Shire ( Godfather, Rocky)
One of my favorite shows! Depressing? No way. Famine, genocide and war is depressing. "Alice" was uplifting like "Chico and the Man", "Welcome Back Kotter", and "All In The Family". "Good Times" when we all watched the same thing on TV and kids were free to play outside, not on the internet. These were my "good ole' days!"
I love this show, and find it very inspiring...Alice is my hero...whenever I'm down I think of Alice and how she started over from scratch...
And what a great voice...I love the voice...and also the lyrics of the theme song changed from the original...I love that rich voice though...this song inspires me, and so does Alice...
@shred It was very sad think about it, she was all alone traveling with her only son, they had no money going cross country in an old junk heap that keeps over heating. She ends up being abused and over worked by her cave man boss at some dump hwy diner in some nowhere hick town. Her son is sad because he has no father figure and every potential husband she meets is either gay or an asshole. So she remains alone earning minimum wage with no retirement plan. Grounds for suicide.
@ShitFromShinolla No, you got it all wrong. This show was uplifting. Alice eked out a good little life for herself and Tommy. They didn't have a lot, but they had enough. They made it through without handouts. They had love; they had each other.
This is more than Alice's theme it is a confidence mood booster song for women and girls who need it morning, noon and night. God is good all the time and I like it like that.
By far Linda Lavin's best vocal of the Alice theme song. Each season she re recorded it with either a new arrangement or a different set of lyrics and it got worse and worse. Here she kept the vocal mannerisms to a minimum and got the most out of the lyric, especially the line "going through life with blinders on, it's tough to see"
The 70's T.V. shows kick ass. Good Times,Starsky and Hutch,One Day at a Time,The Partridge Family and the list goes on. Not like the crap they got now.
I think this is so unique, her singing was great not to many shows have the star of the show singing the theme song and ending song not even today. this is classic.....

This show was so depressing, what a sad existance this woman had. It was so sad. And the fact that she sings the theme song is even more depressing.
ShitFromShinolla 1 year ago 6
@ShitFromShinolla not really linda lavin had a top rated show AND did the theme song
you call THAT depressing?
the show was mildly depressing yes, but it's the reality of many people, art mimics life etc.

I completely agree, this version is by far the best. Her singing is excellent, as is the funky electric piano sound, very indicative of the time...
