  • ¡¡¡Charles Darwin at 3:45!!!

  • wonderful

  • I'd make an "I raped the replay button" joke, but we here are to good for that kind of stuff.

  • Got this whole concert on DVD. It's absolutely wonderful!

  • LSO and Bernstein? Does it get any better?

  • I didnt know Dusty Hill could play Trumpet.

  • I really wonder what he was like when he was younger.

  • OMFG THIS IS AMAZING

  • Awesome composer and hilarious conductor.

  • He was a one off as a conductor.

  • I can't believe my director is conducting faster than Bernstein himself hahaha (my conductor is known for that) I love this piece!!

  • I think the only reason why people disliked this was because the sound is slightly behind the actions, but it doesn't really affect my judgment of the video.

  • 3:44 London Symphony Orchestra... starring ZZ Top!

  • Really? Some people disliked this?

  • Music Maestro!!!Very good

  • good video!

  • My absolute favorite part of this video is when is starts "lipping", if you will, the bassoon part at 3:28!

  • MGM me trouxe aqui

    TRANSIENT

  • @BenjaminJacob Not to mention that they would have to pay a saxophonist if they played works with saxophone in them more frequently. Some orchestras have money to spare, but not most of them.

  • what would they do without there conductor....:)

  • @jacobcustre95 @richardriakkenen I have the score to this. There are no alto saxophones in this arrangement. What you heard was, in fact, a bassoon! And while there are orchestral pieces and arrangements with saxophone, I think we can all agree that they are rare in the orchestral world - especially as the orchestral world takes a while to catch on to new pieces!

  • @dulceparamour21 It's not that it takes the orchestra a while to catch on to new works. Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije and Romeo and Juliet ballet, Ravel's Bolero and his orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition, Milhaud's La Creation du Monde, Bernstein's On the Waterfront, the Berg Violin Concerto.... need I go on? I wouldn't say that saxophones are rare. Most conductors are too scared to perform pieces with saxophone players because they believe that the saxophone is a jazz instrument.

  • @BenjaminJacob Also, I left out Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suites 1 and 2, Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 (Little Train of Caipira) and Uirapuru. The orchestral world has always been conservative. The reason saxophone was never implemented was that at around the time of its invention, the instrumentation for orchestra had pretty much been set for about 100 years. It's a shame really, Berlioz loved the saxophone.

  • @dulceparamour21 and bass clarinet if i'm not mistaken? i'm playing a wind band version of this and the bass clarinet has the line as well.

  • I noticed something...not sure if its valid, but i'll say it anyway.

At 1:09 the camera shows the basoonist. However one can clearly hear an alto saxophone player playing (and while i'll acknowledge that basoon is playing a eighth note lick underneath the melody that is audible) I think that the camera messed up - confusing the sound of an alto saxophone with a basoon. It just seems odd

  • @jacobcuster95 u mean a clarinet...im almost positive that there are no saxophones in this orchestra....because it's an orchestra...lol

  • @capa5350

I don't think so. When I was doing work experience with the MSO, I was told by the saxophonist that there are almost 5000 orchestral scores with saxophones in the orchestration. And funnily enough, they were playing Bernstein at the time.

  • look at him boogieing away

  • GET IT HORNS!!!!!! 3:04

  • we are playing a band version of this. its so awesome!

  • Wat een grappige meneer!!!!

  • Share! I've joyfully performed this many times. It was composed by this conductor. Lest some forget or not know, he was perhaps the greatest American composer and certainly the greatest conductor! Watch his joy hearing what he penned sing out - watch him swoon in rapture at its beauty, and dance like a child at times! REAL expression, no pretense as he relays to his musicians! As one wrote above "Bernstein conducts music much like copper conducts electricity." I wholeheartedly agree.

  • Maravilha, obrigada pela trilha sonora

isso é que é ter bom gosto

    beijo

    Rose

  • Sounds a lot like Mahler's Rondo from the 5th Symphony.

  • the song where got so style one.....

  • @stealthedscout I'm not sure what you mean...this show is done all the time, and the overture from it is done even more frequently than that. plus, stuff like this is still being written today, although it's hard to match the majesty and brilliance of this particular score. but the fact remains, this show isn't obsolete in any way, shape, or form. thankfully :)

  • He is a treasure in Life. I trusted him at 7 years old, the first one to explain music to me. I may owe that love in this now long life to him.

  • This is my favorite composition of all! Bernstein was a great conductor, pianist and also a great composer.

  • BEST CONDUCTING EVER at 2:34. The genius of Lennie!

  • Grandissimo direttore ma anche ottimo compositore

  • Wonderful conducting and wonderful music, we're talking about Leonard Bernstein, a true Genius!

  • beautiful!

  • Okay, there's a certain percentage of us, most them Boomers, who grew up hearing this on Captain Kangaroo, watching the machinery whizzing and whirring, and most of all, Most Of All, that last second visual --- TOAST!

  • BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • I didn't realise Christian Bale was such an accomplished timpanist....

  • Played tuba part on this piece with 3 wind bands. It's a white knuckle ride from beginning to end but also the most worthwhile & fulfilling.... still get chills listening to those sweet, soaring interludes/horn parts!! If you want a lift while running long distance, put this on the ipod/mp3 - it works.

  • PLEASE! I need to know the bearded trumpet player...its driving me CRAZZZY!

  • though I gotta be honest.. I play Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Piano. I give them props for playing this..

  • LOOK! A PICCOLO IN TUNE! YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN!

  • Amazing, love the music and how he's conducting the orchestra, made my day :D

  • who is the trumpet player with the beard?

  • Bernstein's style is purely unique to him. You can clearly hear the Classic essence in the piece, though with a sprinkle of vanguard added to it.

    Exellence.

  • 1.22 - Nice music. :)

  • Amazing! What a master!

  • love him at 2:33

  • dude brahms was playing the trumpet

  • WOW EXELENTE!!! ESPECIALMENTE DESDE EL MINUTO 3:44

  • I played the band arrangement of this :))

    it's such a beautiful song!!

  • Bernstein was such a genius, such a force in this world. What gifts he has left for us all.

  • this always reminds me of the Loony Tunes XD

  • I was lucky enough to be at this stunning performance as a 9 year old girl, my dad took me and we had seats in the second row, I was so excited as I was convinced Bernstein looked straight at me! He was a charismatic presence who was pure musicality and this performance inspired my lifelong passion for music, I am still so grateful I had the opportunity to see him conduct his own work, thank you for posting x

  • Wow. He really like to get into it.

  • Candide 1 - West Side Story 0

Glitter and be gay, Maria, Maria.... :-)

  • moses can play that horn!

  • Does anyone else think that that timpanist looks like DATA (aka B. Spiner)?

  • I had the pleasure of seeing the CSO (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) perform this live =]

  • love this piece hopefully one day i can play it

  • What is the song at 1:22? SO beautiful!

  • reminds me star wars!!!!!

  • @asell1231 I don't see what you mean... Those two pieces are very different... Lucas asked Williams to inspire from Korngold, Tchaïkovsky among others, but not Bernstein....

  • Bernstein looks like he is loving every minute of it. Great performance!

  • The tympanist looks like DATA!

  • Now listen to the Venezuelan Youth...

  • i really wish the audio and video were in sync...

  • you know why i remembered that this is london symphony orchestra? because i remember that charles darwin trumpeter at 0:17!!

  • He lady behind bernstien in the audience has a big as fro lol

  • Horns=Win

  • Lolll, even the London Symphony horn section cracks. This makes me feel so much better about myself! =D

  • HORNS AT 3:10 ONWARDS WOAAAAAAAAAH

  • The piccolo guy @ 03:53 wears a green plastic watch lol

  • This one fucking ridiculous show. But nice music.

  • I LOVE this overture. God Bless Bernstein!

  • Why are there ALWAYS dislikes on famous pieces of music like this. If you feel the need to press the dislike button, leave the page.

  • The basoon player kinda looks like his instrument.

  • who says conducting has to be 'standard'? he is a revelation. and a genius x 1000...

  • the guy on the huge drums looks cool... give him a harley and a leather jacket

  • Looking at the French Horn player's face at 2:53 is awe-inspiring. The amount of concentration, skill, and thousands of hours of practicing to be able to perform with such beauty should be be appreciated. It makes me sad to see that such skill is hardly ever truly appreciated at the general public level, where pop stars reign. Such a beautiful musical moment.

  • Does anyone else think that the flute player at 1:07 looks like Nathan Fillion from Firefly?

  • Is it my imagination, or is this song in Kirby Air Ride?

  • @timtheslim35 I TOTALLY know what you're talking about! I think you're referring to the 'Checker Knights' music from the game.

    It does sound similar!

  • My high school played this 2 years ago... we may play it again next year....

  • HORN!

  • Is that Sven goran eriksson playing violin!!!

  • I'm reminded of ET when Bernstein does his dancing.

  • 38 people's jaws dropped onto the mouse making them click dislike.

  • bernsteins a good dancer

  • I didn't know ZZ TOP played trumpet 2:17:)

  • Bernstein is such an entertaining conductor to watch. And also an amazing man that brought us some of the greatest music of his time.

  • i just finished studying him in band class, he is totally amazing.

  • How could you possibly not like this? (:

  • Does anyone know the name of the song with the trumpet entrance at 3:45?

  • @JackSparrow2600 That's part of the instrumental arrangement for Glitter and Be Gay.

  • @JackSparrow2600 specifically the part where she goes "observe how bravely i conceal the dreadful shame i feel" near the end.

  • @JackSparrow2600 Hi Jack the name of that song I have no idea about. But I do remember Dick Cavett show had that part as his theme song during the 70's. Great show, with guests such as John Lennon, Katherine Hepburn, Timothy Leary and many others of note. I think they always refer to that song as "ovrture from candide"

  • @JackSparrow2600 Overture? Nice hear, Captain. I know it is the main motive and the very end.

    Except . . . . bing bddas bink . . .bu da! Ti-ta-ti-ta's anybody?

  • I dunno... 3:40 made my day too. 2:32 is pretty epic though.

  • @takingiteasy17 I think there's a bit of a sync problem with the audio. In response to comments about Bernstein's conducting skill, he is perhaps a little lacking in orthodox technique, but then there's no need to bash every beat down for a professional orchestra - they only need you for interpretation, balance and phrasing a lot of the time.

  • holy french horns!!

  • Fascinating how much he conducts in front of the beat.. Great composer and conductor.

  • ♫♫♫♫♫composed and conducted by Bernstein, genius!! Love Love Love

  • ♫♫♫♫♫composed and conducted by Bernstein, genius!! Love Love Love

  • I'm playing this song with my High-School Wind Ensemble. Wish us luck...

  • @HiThere942 Heyyy! So am I! Good luck!

  • This guy is beastly

  • @dasparton0007 first violin or second? I must say though, its extremely hard to play. I'm a first in my symphony and geez it's intense. But props to this orch! I'd never find his downbeat haha! :)

  • UGH if you post this make sure the video and audio line up! GEE-ZUS. lol...

  • Playing this in band!!!!

  • sounds a bit Star Wars-y with a bit of Addams Family ;D

  • Leonard Bernstein made a studio recording of the complete(and final revised) Candide in December of 1989 that is on a double disc on the Deutsche Grammophon label with the London Symphony and the cast listed above. It is easily one of my top 20 favorite classical recordings out of about a trillion!Candide is remarkably tuneful and equally witty.I`ve always thought it Lenny`s masterpiece.Voltaire would have approved!

  • the trumpeter (trumpetist? i dunno) at :17 has the greatest beard ever.

  • Que genialidad. Gracias por este video

  • lol im just saying, but the 38 people who disliked dont know real music, OR real actors when they see it hahaha

  • Aw he is sooooo cute!

  • oh my god oh my god i love him so much. awww, lenny.

  • Wonderful.

never seen a conductor dancing at a performance.

Brings all the fun and emotions to the piece.

I couldn't help but dance myself. We are going to do this piece for LYO.

    Go Bernstein!

  • Why did you not allow playback on an iPad?

  • @SuperDave61164 I don't think I have any control over that, but I'll check it out.

  • @nickbigd Thnks

  • @SuperDave61164

There was no iPad when this was uploaded.

  • I love this piece and the composer. And whoever said he was a bad conductor, at this level, the musicians need very little to be given each and every beat, but to be reminded of the emotion there are intended to portray. He is making sure not that they play the correct rhythms (they got that down), but to make sure it sounds as he imagined.

  • can anyone please send me the sheet music for violin? i wud greatly appreciate it :)

  • oh my goodness. his dancing makes me happy.

  • remarquable !!

  • I like how Leonard is dancing around lmao

  • Interesting start by the timpanist ;)

  • @gurcrist

Actually the start was interesting "in general" ;)

But this performance is so awesome we shouldn't probably care about that!

  • Every time i watch a video of Leonard Bernstein conducting I crack up...

He's such an unorthodox composer, yet he still manages to astound us with his brilliance.

  • lovely. :)

my highschool is attempting this uhhh project. :) We might have to take it at a slower pace. (But I think I like it better that way personally.)

  • This piece perfectly portrays Candide perfectly!!! It sounds so innocent and pure!!! What a way to illustrate Optimism.

  • gotta love the horn part right!!

  • 38 people hate amazing music.

  • Dancing two and a half minutes in=favorite part of the video.

...Make that ALL of the dancing. love LB

  • @ilovegodandmusic

Bernstein conducts music much like copper conducts electricity.

  • @ELIEZERE1 Such an influence of my conducting. I wish he wasn't dead and composing more. Everything that comes from his hand is just loved. :)

  • Dancing two and a half minutes in=favorite part of the video.

  • amazing piece. Absolutely astounding orchestration.

  • 0:54 he pulls his glasses out of his pocket for some reason... 0:58 he's conducting with them in his hand... 1:01, cuts away, 3 seconds later (1:04), they're gone! What the heck??

  • 1:09 makes the video

  • how is no one in the audience dancing!? too stuffy.

  • @Jakeofalltrades And which major symphony orchestra is it that you conduct? I work with a professional opera and ballet orchestra and the conductors we work with are absolutely awe-inspiring. Sometimes we have a conductor change mid season, and it's fascinating to see the different things that the different conductors get out of the orchestra with the same source material - and believe me, they are very different. There is an awful lot more to it than just keeping "good tempo".

  • maurice murphy RIP

  • if i wuz sitting in tht orchestra playing violin i wuld be laughing sooo hard

how do they nt find his dancing amusing?? id b doubled over in laughter

  • I love bernstein and his epic dance moves

  • 3:23

The real reason why the group is so good is because of the eyebrow conducting.

  • GO LEONARD YOUR CONDUCTING AMUSES ME , he dances , you wrote a really beautiful piece of music here , we are playing it for UIL

  • Love you Leonard! God Bless You!

  • Love you Leonard!

  • @hornplayerchris maybe Bernstein doesn't have to try hard to conduct with this orchestra because he knows they are good enough to not have a conductor keeping time the whole performance. Instead he is conducting with more of his interpretation of the piece and how it should be played stylistically.

  • AAAAA+++++

  • best candide ever - must be himself.

  • Voltaire - what would he be thinking ? !

  • Comment removed

  • Is there a lag between the music and the motions of the orchestra?

  • @1Obidiah1

Very much so. By the end, the video is more than a beat ahead.

  • Thank you

  • at 2:32

    that made my day

  • @stuff78909 - Don't you just LOVE that!! Genius. God I love Bernstein.

  • @SingerAR I 1000% agree with you! Bernstein's Musical interpretation through is conducting is ... simply amazing!

  • @stuff78909 unfortunately so, where did they get that concert master from? I played it better in High School Area All State lol

  • @Jon98526 no you didn't.

  • @stuff78909 LOL

  • Im so excited, we were talking about Voltaire and Cadide yesterday in my World Civ II class and then I was telling my friend about Voltaire and he was like, Oh yeah he enspired Leonard Bernstein's Candide, we are going to be playing that in our wind ensemble for the next concert!!! Yay I love when different parts of my life connect like that

  • I'd love to have Bernstein as a conductor any day

  • I hope to be such a good conductor that I can just get up and start dancing like a fool. So happy.

  • 2:33 a lady in the audience laughs... I wonder why... ;) !
