I think the only reason why people disliked this was because the sound is slightly behind the actions, but it doesn't really affect my judgment of the video.
@BenjaminJacob Not to mention that they would have to pay a saxophonist if they played works with saxophone in them more frequently. Some orchestras have money to spare, but not most of them.
@jacobcustre95@richardriakkenen I have the score to this. There are no alto saxophones in this arrangement. What you heard was, in fact, a bassoon! And while there are orchestral pieces and arrangements with saxophone, I think we can all agree that they are rare in the orchestral world - especially as the orchestral world takes a while to catch on to new pieces!
@dulceparamour21 It's not that it takes the orchestra a while to catch on to new works. Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije and Romeo and Juliet ballet, Ravel's Bolero and his orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition, Milhaud's La Creation du Monde, Bernstein's On the Waterfront, the Berg Violin Concerto.... need I go on? I wouldn't say that saxophones are rare. Most conductors are too scared to perform pieces with saxophone players because they believe that the saxophone is a jazz instrument.
@BenjaminJacob Also, I left out Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suites 1 and 2, Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 (Little Train of Caipira) and Uirapuru. The orchestral world has always been conservative. The reason saxophone was never implemented was that at around the time of its invention, the instrumentation for orchestra had pretty much been set for about 100 years. It's a shame really, Berlioz loved the saxophone.
I noticed something...not sure if its valid, but i'll say it anyway.
At 1:09 the camera shows the basoonist. However one can clearly hear an alto saxophone player playing (and while i'll acknowledge that basoon is playing a eighth note lick underneath the melody that is audible) I think that the camera messed up - confusing the sound of an alto saxophone with a basoon. It just seems odd
I don't think so. When I was doing work experience with the MSO, I was told by the saxophonist that there are almost 5000 orchestral scores with saxophones in the orchestration. And funnily enough, they were playing Bernstein at the time.
Share! I've joyfully performed this many times. It was composed by this conductor. Lest some forget or not know, he was perhaps the greatest American composer and certainly the greatest conductor! Watch his joy hearing what he penned sing out - watch him swoon in rapture at its beauty, and dance like a child at times! REAL expression, no pretense as he relays to his musicians! As one wrote above "Bernstein conducts music much like copper conducts electricity." I wholeheartedly agree.
@stealthedscout I'm not sure what you mean...this show is done all the time, and the overture from it is done even more frequently than that. plus, stuff like this is still being written today, although it's hard to match the majesty and brilliance of this particular score. but the fact remains, this show isn't obsolete in any way, shape, or form. thankfully :)
Okay, there's a certain percentage of us, most them Boomers, who grew up hearing this on Captain Kangaroo, watching the machinery whizzing and whirring, and most of all, Most Of All, that last second visual --- TOAST!
Played tuba part on this piece with 3 wind bands. It's a white knuckle ride from beginning to end but also the most worthwhile & fulfilling.... still get chills listening to those sweet, soaring interludes/horn parts!! If you want a lift while running long distance, put this on the ipod/mp3 - it works.
I was lucky enough to be at this stunning performance as a 9 year old girl, my dad took me and we had seats in the second row, I was so excited as I was convinced Bernstein looked straight at me! He was a charismatic presence who was pure musicality and this performance inspired my lifelong passion for music, I am still so grateful I had the opportunity to see him conduct his own work, thank you for posting x

@asell1231 I don't see what you mean... Those two pieces are very different... Lucas asked Williams to inspire from Korngold, Tchaïkovsky among others, but not Bernstein....
Looking at the French Horn player's face at 2:53 is awe-inspiring. The amount of concentration, skill, and thousands of hours of practicing to be able to perform with such beauty should be be appreciated. It makes me sad to see that such skill is hardly ever truly appreciated at the general public level, where pop stars reign. Such a beautiful musical moment.
Never seen a conductor dance at a performance. He's such an unorthodox composer, yet he still manages to astound us with his brilliance. Brings all the fun and emotion to the piece. This performance is so awesome!!!
@JackSparrow2600 Hi Jack the name of that song I have no idea about. But I do remember Dick Cavett show had that part as his theme song during the 70's. Great show, with guests such as John Lennon, Katherine Hepburn, Timothy Leary and many others of note. I think they always refer to that song as "ovrture from candide"
@takingiteasy17 I think there's a bit of a sync problem with the audio. In response to comments about Bernstein's conducting skill, he is perhaps a little lacking in orthodox technique, but then there's no need to bash every beat down for a professional orchestra - they only need you for interpretation, balance and phrasing a lot of the time.
@dasparton0007 first violin or second? I must say though, its extremely hard to play. I'm a first in my symphony and geez it's intense. But props to this orch! I'd never find his downbeat haha! :)
Leonard Bernstein made a studio recording of the complete(and final revised) Candide in December of 1989 that is on a double disc on the Deutsche Grammophon label with the London Symphony and the cast listed above. It is easily one of my top 20 favorite classical recordings out of about a trillion!Candide is remarkably tuneful and equally witty.I`ve always thought it Lenny`s masterpiece.Voltaire would have approved!
I love this piece and the composer. And whoever said he was a bad conductor, at this level, the musicians need very little to be given each and every beat, but to be reminded of the emotion there are intended to portray. He is making sure not that they play the correct rhythms (they got that down), but to make sure it sounds as he imagined.
0:54 he pulls his glasses out of his pocket for some reason... 0:58 he's conducting with them in his hand... 1:01, cuts away, 3 seconds later (1:04), they're gone! What the heck??
@Jakeofalltrades And which major symphony orchestra is it that you conduct? I work with a professional opera and ballet orchestra and the conductors we work with are absolutely awe-inspiring. Im so excited, we were talking about Voltaire and Cadide yesterday in my World Civ II class and then I was telling my friend about Voltaire and he was like, Oh yeah he enspired Leonard Bernstein's Candide, we are going to be playing that in our wind ensemble for the next concert!!! Is there a lag between the music and the motions of the orchestra?

Im so excited, we were talking about Voltaire and Cadide yesterday in my World Civ II class and then I was telling my friend about Voltaire and he was like, Oh yeah he enspired Leonard Bernstein's Candide, we are going to be playing that in our wind ensemble for the next concert!!! Yay I love when different parts of my life connect like that

I'd love to have Bernstein as a conductor any day

I hope to be such a good conductor that I can just get up and start dancing like a fool. So happy.
