  • brilliant! thanks mukka x

  • There appears to be a debate over whether this is a love song or a political song. I'm an American, and while I am well aware of the historical strife in Ireland, it first struck me as a love song, I guess because I'm so far away (geographically) from the conflict. But when I look at it politically, it does sound very much like a political message. My guess: Shane was crafty enough to make it both, at the same time. That's why it's so great. It transcends, yet, embodies, both love and politics.

  • class. tnks 4 the upload.

  • best song, worst video

  • This is an edited version. Notice that bit where it suddenly cuts to Shane on TV at 1:46? In the uncut version Spider hocks a giant gob of mucus and spits it on to the poster of Thatcher.

  • 0:25 Jem Finer

    3:49 Elvis Costello

  • Simply great..

  • comment une chanson si magnifique peut avoir un clip si pourris? How can such a great song can be represented by such an ugly and inapropius video clip?

  • Was this video directed by Terry Gilliam??

  • @asktunes Lmao, I thought the same thing!:D

  • great music, STFU and enjoy

  • @daftrider666 Oh yes continue demonizing a governmental body as if it were some fucking ghost or something. An idea didnt opress half of the world, it was british cunts who thought they were fucking superior. You stupid fuck, it was the armies of English, trained by an English government. Fuck the british, we proved in the revolutionary war you are fucking panzies, so you picked on the scottish because they were small in number and easy to beat you fucking cunt.

  • @12yroldutubehatr and a lot of the British army were Irishmen in Irish regiments ;-)

  • this is a great song!

  • One day, I played to my Dad the song Kitty. He is from Ireland, and knew what Shane was singing of in this beautiful song.

  • I wish people wouldn't portray the Irish as victims all the time. The British are long gone. We've been in charge of our own destiny for almost 100 years and we elected the people who screwed up the country ....so no more of this self pity please.

  • Did anyone know the name of the girl actresss??

  • Best song ever!

  • Go on, Shane!

  • give me your heart and soul.... the artist ... doomed with his honest emotion.

  • agreed paddy , but meety b , get over it cock..Shane is more English than me ya daft git but wotever , as long as you enjoy - who gives a be-jesus....

  • @tonyddownes Well sayed dat man dere.

  • cheers ole shane

  • Funny thing is, I would need the lyrical genius of Shane McGowan to fully express my appreciation of his lyrics.

  • Reminds me of Magical Mystery Tour... only better.

  • Is it true, I heard Christy Moore talking about this years ago, that the canal that's referenced, and the 'arms and legs of other men' is about a battle during WW1. I assume Irish troops with nationalist sentiments were often used in the most dangerous attacks.

  • @whyteay It might also be about the Ulster divisions who were Loyalist Protestants and were put straight into the charges of the Somme.

  • A song I still find myself singing (badly) so many years after I first heard it. Must mean something. Mind a lot of pogues songs are like that.

  • Timeless song!

  • This is a love song. No politics.

  • this is the video from nancy whisky !!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • makes ense when you drunk

  • Lol at spider skipping down the hill.

  • shane is everything noel gallagher ever wanted to be and i fucking love noel LOL!!!!!

  • one of my favorite songs i wish they would've filmed the whole video like the 3:00 mark of just the band playing.

  • Shut the fuck up arguing and enjoy the music. It doesn't belong to any one culture or country, its for everyone.

  • ginger reb wade!!! burn the witch!

  • loll - there is no "ireland" o "England" anymore. It as given away ... to the muslims. You soppy bastards - soppy, wilting pathetic PC bastards. You destroyed Britian and Ireland.

  • Merci!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what an amazing song!!!!! catches the imagination and won't let go. Pure genious!

  • ey! thats elvis costello! hahaha!

  • Brendan Behan, Ronnie Drew and now, all there is left is Shane. Who will step into his shoes when he goes? Long live Shane MacGowan! Mind you I'm pretty fecking drunk, but these are my heroes.

  • People in Europe and the isles need to deal with their governments and soon. All this Irish identity wank is going to be a bad joke in a few generations when the kids are all shit colored meta-rootless idiot drones anyway.

  • @fitzy545 funny you should bring up the nazis -where were the irish in the war again--oh yeah they were helping the pricks.. what i said had fuck all to do with grammer, i just think some things make you look like a twat ---i'm laughing at you -how can i show that.....i know i'll try and type the noise i'm making, that way he'll know i find it funny .. bit of a doss cunt you ..fuckin yank

  • @iampunitan funny how you get so insulted ha ha so are your really anoyed that the pogues are irish ha ha ha IM LAUGHING AT YOU DUMB BRIT

  • @fitzy545 i'm not anoyed - i fuckin love the pogues - i grew up listening to the dubliners and the pogues ...if the pogues were english i probably wouldn't like them as much .. mcgowan is class - you are a tosser

  • @iampunitan im a tosser??? ha comin from you who started a row with me over nothin haa GOBSHITE

  • @fitzy545 i didn't start a row with you over nothing - i had a go at you because you were having a go at the english - did you really think you wouldn't be called on it...if you post a comment that takes the piss out of any nationality ,then you should be prepared for people taking offense..you are a tosser, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise

  • @iampunitan na the real thing is your father was a tosser not me no point in bein jealous of everything us irish have own do thats what started all the trouble between are 2 countrys scumbags like you and your evil scumbag ways no fuck of go listin to your own music you cunt

  • @fitzy545 that made no sense at all - you're ranting like a mental - did i upset you sweetheart

  • @iampunitan made perfect sense to me maybe your a retard?? im starting to think you are down syndrome so i apologize

  • @fitzy545 it's going to make sense to you because you wrote it - you fuckin spaz- but to anyone else a sentence like ..everything us irish have own do thats ... makes no sense .. it's good to know that you got a good education in ireland- but i still think you are just some sad american with an irish fixation... i can't believe you actually said that something YOU wrote made perfect sense to you - do you know how much of a prick that makes you look. you are such a wanker

  • @iampunitan hey little man why dont you go listin to the queens speech and get of my music you fuckin hun just goin into racist abuse towards irish now you are how long did that take typicl brit

  • @fitzy545 getting a bit desperate now aren't you - playing the racist card - ive got nothing against any country or culture but fuckwits like you - who aren't even from ireland - are so annoying that i'm left with no choice... why would i give two shits about the queen - that's a typical american attitude - you think because i'm english i care about the royals..you are a sad sad twat

  • @iampunitan typical brit showing your racist ways and who said im american?? your gettin more brain dead by the minute so fuck off with your anti irish shit and listin to your own music

  • @fitzy545 you have already said this - you are really running out of arguments - so you're just repeating yourself..but keep it up it's funny as fuck - i love the way you keep calling me racist when all you do is write anti brittish hate remarks and i don't hate anyone - i look at the irish the same way as i see the welsh ,english and scottish - all equals - but being a dumb yank you wouldn't get it

  • @fitzy545 Don't call us Huns. We aren't German. Hun is used as a term of abuse even when talking about Germans, if it comes to that, and you know it.

Some of us English are also part Irish too. I'm 1/8 Irish myself and lots of English have at least some Irish blood. Now, of course, that's partly because England made it so bloody awful in Ireland that loads of people left. It is fair to criticise what England did, but not to hurl racist abuse at us just because of who we are.

  • @neotenousape lol england is the most racist towards irish you call me a paddy which is racist its the same as calling a black person the N word but it seems to be ok in your country

  • @iampunitan The imperialist English state has screwed over a number of countries. Don't pretend the Irish & others didn't have, and haven't got, legitimate grievances. As 4 ppl not be'n Irish; my ancestors include two waves of more or less forced immigration from Scottland to Ireland; lowland catholic & pagan Scotts fleeing religious & ethnic persecution by the English. & later lowland Scottish converts to Protestantism who were shipped to northern Ireland on mass to breed out the Catholics...

  • @Tuathalful i would never pretend the irish haven't got genuine grievances - i know about the shit they went through because of the english landlord..it can be a bit annoying though looking at anti english statements on every pogues page- no country is without it's share of atrocities - we shouldn't forget them but also we shouldn't hold it against every generation after the fact - you should get out of this argument between me and that prick - it gets really boring

  • Who cares where their from? They are all from different countries so clearly where they were born doesn't have an impact on the way they play music. There's plenty of Irish people who can't play music to save their life, same as any country anywhere!

  • Das ist Irland pur..ohne britischen Mist!

  • Ah, I didn't know that. Explains why he sounds like s/o putting on an Irish accent then..?

  • they were formed in Kings Cross London.... so when did the band just up and emigrate from ireland.?... trust me... ive studied shane macgowans history ... i love this band to death.. ive covered a great many of their tunes including this one.... sorry if i pissed anyone off by simply saying where they are from.. i meant no malicious intent or personal attack on anyone

  • is that brinsley ford from aswad in this video?

  • 14. 7 se vidimo

  • makes me cry every time when i think about a pair of brown eyes...

  • a work of art - genius !

  • uhhhh the pogues are from LONDON.. shanes of irish decent.. but theyre an english band whether you like it or not..

  • @meatisburger2 you may take a man from ireland... but you can never take ireland from a man. the pogues are the essence of the irish..the music... the lyric...the tragi-comedy. No fiddly ayes... no aran sweaters... no winkin an nudgin... no blarney stones... just a punk band born of emigration and loss... a spirit unbowed, unbroken, brazen and real. alcoholic and drugged up, making songs that you can't fake. They're more irish than any other band ever will be. They can never be called english

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 dont get me wrong i live and die by the same code brother.. i love the pogues to death. but im not wrong for saying theyre from london

  • @meatisburger2 no not wrong at all.... still, theyre not an english band. geography is one things. life is another

  • @meatisburger2 Don't argue with a fool Meatis, You'll only come out of it looking silly.

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 more than 'alf of them were english you knob head, shane was born in kent, does that change you're limited opinion shithead

  • @hoopster68 shane was born in county tipperary,,not that it makes any odds,of course he is irish, look at the head on him!

  • @hoopster68 Ignore him Hoopster Andy is a an uneducated twat. He is to Ireland what Niggers are to black people an annoying embarrassment that does not reflect us all.

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 i thought the pogues were english. they are english aren't they??

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 You make me embarrassed of been from Ireland. You are to Ireland what Niggers are to black people. You have done your bit for Tourism and Cliche now you can put down the Kool-Aid and Tri-Colour. Kirsty Mccoll was English, as was Joe Strummer and The Specials. All of which collaborated with the Pogues. Good Music does not have a Nationality. Shit this song is about an Irish Guy Fighting and dieing for Britain in World War I. Shit the Album was produced by Elvis Costello-> Brit

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 i'm dutch and liked the music, doesn't matter of your Irish or english. Music is Music

  • @geodetisch

William of Orange was a cunt, apologies on a postcard.

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 the english took the ireland from the men you bunch of irish cunts. thats why there's loads of songs about the english oppressors. bad losers

  • @mansfieldladdale How are we bad losers if we got Ireland back in the revolution?

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 then if you all hate england so much why not fuck off back where you come from, and that goes for the rest of any of you ungrateful immigrant fucks who point the finger at us for your own shit life

  • @FELIXjk007

Yes but what are you REALLY angry about?

  • @FELIXjk007 when did i say i hate england? ... my comment was entirely about the pogues... and pointing out the fact that they should not be called an english band.. they are, at their heart.. an irish band... "if you all hate england so much"... jaysis get a grip... "ungrateful immigrant cunts"... charming.. i obviously deserved that response to my zealous tirade against all things english (said with irony if you dont catch that, or even understand it, you bigotted gimp)

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 AMEN to that!

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 Oh calm down ya dick.

  • @AndrewKingDublin16 Nice to read a positive comments toward the English born IRISH (experienced too many lazy negatives from the Dubs myself). Shane is Irish through and through and his great knowledge andf love of Ireland and irish history is obvious in his lyrics

  • @AndrewKingDublin16

    shame he's irish

  • @meatisburger2 not an english band meathead. just cause they HAD to emigrate doesnt make them english

  • up with the irish

  • Crazy-good video. I've sat next to that dirty old man on the tube in London :-|

  • Whats with that horse? lmao

  • @koitorob Tis you wearing the blinkers. 'Terrorist' is so subjective. In each country occupied by the Nazis, they referred to the resistance as 'terrorists' and so it has been, and always will be, in any country invaded and occupied by another. The Nazis shot and imprisoned dissenters, and undermined opposition by covert means too. Peaceful demontrators were scattered and mown down in the street by gunfire and club. If this all sounds familiar to you, it fucking should. Now enjoy the music.

  • Why the FUCK are you useless pricks bringing politics into some of the best music ever written? ENJOY THE FECKIN MUSIC. Who gives a fuck about the British Empire, the Polacks or anything, music is about ENJOYMENT not criticism.

SIT BACK, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND ENJOY, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

youse eejits completely miss the feckin point

  • @land4x4ever Let's get a beer and drink on this ! It's always good for the mind to share thoughts with someone that sees so clearly this music for what it is...

  • @kuttersprodukt They're already cooling off in the fridge my friend

  • @land4x4ever

Actually smartass.....this kind of music comes with some extra baggage....not always, but more often than not. That's folk music for you. If you are to simple to see that, well..... your the fool.

  • @land4x4ever

Well said my friend, exactly what I was thinking! sickens me to see people having a pointless arguement which ultimately leads nowhere. fuckin cop onto yourselves and grow up, seriously everyones bored of the same ould crap. and if you see someone talking shit, give it a thumbs down but dont sink to they're level by gettin involved, thats what they want! "Our revenge will be the laughter of our children" B.S.

  • @land4x4ever well spoken comrade .

  • @land4x4ever ah fukin jeshus horse

  • @land4x4ever The Pogues' music is ALL about POLITICS. The Irish were first fucked over by the British, then they were fucked over by the Catholic Church, then they were fucked over by the IRA, and now they're being fucked over by Capitalists. You'll find all this in the Pogues' music.

  • @hem1934

You forgot to mention fucked over by FIFA in the Frog-land game.

  • @hem1934

LOL ! , you drunk ? The pogues were fucked over by Shane thats all there is too it :D Drunk bastard, but that doesn't make it bad .. but's thats all there is to it.

  • Comment removed

  • @daftrider666 You're one of those English cunts who have no knowledge or understanding of why the Irish hate England. Maybe the 2000 years of oppression and segregation had something to do with it? Prick

  • @fronoc yeah because everyone in england got together and said lets fuck those guys over didnt they

  • @daftrider666 Well they didn't exactly speak out against it did they? Had English men taken to the streets and protested or something I would have respected the English, but the majority backed it.

  • @hem1934

Shut your hole......you need f****** over good style...

  • @hem1934 People need to forget the past and live in this day and time... it was not any living that did this, so why not forget the past and start living anew in today's present time. Stop living in the History and start making some Better History for our kids to learn from instead of some Stone Age time when everyone killed everyone.

Merry Christmas and a much better New Year to all!

  • @hem1934 What are you on about hey??

  • Comment removed

  • @hem1934 Lets not go so far as saying that the IRA fucked Ireland. I'd rather like to think they helped out quite a bit.. there's only 6 left to go.

  • @land4x4ever how can you say that when the Pogues music is so political?

  • this could be the worst video ever made

  • @evilvanessa to one of the greatest songs ever made? Interesting

  • This music video does not do the song justice.

  • This is a great song. If you can't tell (there's something wrong with your ears) by the music, you can tell by the arguments.

  • in the 1st verse is the 1st part about a drunk young guy who wants to fight and kill the english who is talking to a war vetren, the vetren is basically telling him to shut up as he doesn't know the horrors of war?

  • Far from being one who advocates the murder of innocents, look up rightwing prick Barry Goldwater's analysis of extremism. Ultimately the IRA's attacks on British Civilians were on the wrong targets, but if they got Margret Thatcher I wouldn't have minded too much. Attacking members of the working classes was not on, but fighting for freedom from a the state that was the UK in NI at the time wasn't wrong. Nowadays, nationalists have it better but back then they were still second class citizens.

  • I love this song

  • @palestineoliver War mongering turd?

So we should have bent over and took it from the argentinians then?

Bitching about the Belgrano are we?

We should have waved ta ta to it shouting bon voyage JUST because it was sailing away from us then?

NO, we were at war, they were the enemy, bomb them all to hell!

    Argentina 0 Great Britain 1

  • @koitorob So you say bomb them all to hell and then you complain about terrorism?Does murdering people over a piece of land get YOU hard?Hypocrite.I suppose those in the British army who've murdered millions of civilians throughout the world were 'thoughtful' murderers eh?

  • @koitorob And the IRA were at war with your terrorist Nation. The Queen is worse then Bin Laden. At least he doesn't pretend to be friendly Fuck the British.

  • @ManicPoetRyRy Bin Laden is probably viewd as a freedom fighter to many, what the fuck has the queen got to do with anything? Its the politicians that shopuld be hung...

  • @STFCstoneroses Because she didn't speak out against the wrong doing of her country. She may be just a figurehead but if the Queen would have said something about it, It would have done a lot for the cause.

  • @ManicPoetRyRy How sad to have your blinkered view of the world. I think everyone will agree that the ira are the terrorists. I don't recall any bombs being planted by the british army with the SOLE purpose of killing and maiming innocent men, women and children! I still love Ireland AND it's people! Nothing you can say will change that. Just like i have nothing againt muslems. The one's who blow themselves up and kill and maim innocent people in the name of god are NOT muslems.

  • @koitorob What you don't recall would fill several libraries. The British Army's Black and Tans were responsible for deliberately killing innocent Irish men, women and children. Everything from shooting to burning alive. Not excusing the IRA but the British Army in the 70s, 80s weren't too upset about killing Catholic civilians. And the UVF (not Brit Army) committed same atrocities as IRA

I'm half English, a lover of English culture, don't blame ordinary English. You need to read a bit more

  • @ManicPoetRyRy Yea HAIL THE BRITS Hell the George Washington was a terrorist to beacuse they stood up to the loving British. Look back into history. I know it is a lot of reading but the British have caused so many of the worlds problems and the British killed so many civilian and non combatants but we should love them. I say Put the Queen, WIlliam Harry Kate Middleton and anyone that are decendants of the crown up for execution and Margret Thatcher. Koit you are a DOuche whos sucks british dick

  • @palestineoliver Aye. Too bad the 'RA didn't get her get her back in '84 with the Brighton bomb!

  • @photojohne Condone all terrorism do you?

Like to see innocent babies, women and children with their torsos ripped apart? Turns you on does it?

Any particular flavour of terrorism gets you hard?

Political? Religious? Or is just any dead bodies?

Why not post your name and address here and maybe somebody who has had a loved one taken from them in the name of some mindless thoughtless murderer's cause will pay YOU a visit and share their pain with...i dunno...a pickaxe handle to your knees

  • @koitorob The British Empire was the first Terrorist nation and killed more civilians then the IRA could ever dream of. Look at the History. The Royal Family as inbred as they are should all be hung for their crimes on humanity.

  • The Irish helped the Maori during the various disagreements that we had with the English all those years ago, I will respect the Irish people for that forever.

  • lovely

  • the video is still timely. . .if only all the 'security ' forces could skip down a trail side by side with children like at the end . . . a foreshadow of Egypt? a most transcendant song. how Shane Mcgowan weaves war and peace and revelation. .. this song has always taken me on along on a halucinatory drunken sacred vision back to a pair of brown eyes

  • I love this song, but the video is nightmarish...

  • poetry, by a poet, lovely.

  • god bless ireland, god bless shane, what a feckin song

  • Love it!

  • One of the best songs ever written by one of our best living artist!

  • reminds me of clockwork orange

  • Didn't the Beeb bar this from being shown on their channels when the song was out? Too worried about the govt of the day (Thatch as figurehead and her drones ) - and the Beeb suits in boardrooms knowing who held the purse strings. - Oh well, might be wrong, but I'm sure I never saw this video on the Beeb

  • @emma5977 they also blocked god save the queen by the sex pistols..... worried they might piss off the queen....

  • Didn't the Beeb bar this from being shown on their channels when the song was out? Too worried about the govt of the day (Thatch as figurehead and her drones ) - and the BBC suits in boardrooms knowing who held the purse strings. - Oh well, might be wrong, but I'm sure I never saw this video on the BBC

  • Wow weird video but great song!

  • This video literally has nothing to do with the song hahahaha god i love you Shane

  • @XxdrumsxX haha well his eyes do fall into his tea at one point..

  • poetry

  • One of the most beautiful lines in this song full of rich imagery is:

A hungry sound came across the breeze so I gave the walls a talking.

Think about what hungry sounds could be. Think about when you talk to the walls--it is when you are all alone, hopefully searching inside yourself for some understanding.

  • Great works of art and poetry often illustrate experiences that are universal to all human beings. These works surely meant specific things to their creators, but are powerful because they evoke our own responses. This is a song about the great yearning for love, the hope and promise that it can be found, and how humans will wander far and wide to find it. It is also about how youth and elders can listen to one another, and realize that there are common experiences across generations.

  • It also touches on the horrors of the battlefiled, and how, in midst of such atrocity , it is the hope and dream of finding love that can keep us going--roving-- forward.

There is a reference to Irish musicians Ray Lynam and Philomena Begley, who had a hit with an American country song called My Elusive Dreams. You can hear them performing this here on YouTube.

  • Genius is a word often used, and if doesn't apply to this effort, then it is a beautiful accident.

  • The English invinted the language, The Americans Abused it

    THE IRISH PERFECTED |IT

  • wut do u make of this song? someone decipher it for me.

  • Wasn't this written by peter case of the plimsouls? it was on his 80's solo project.

  • @coolnegative The best evidence I've seen is that this is a Shane MacGowan tune.

Peter Case covered it on his solo debut. He knows a good song when he hears it, and he's written his share of good ones.
