you should note that some cars and especially newer cars have electronically controlled throttle bodys that you might break or run into problems if you dont know what your doing. Usually you turn the car to ON and hold the gas all the way as you turn it back to OFF so the butterfly is left open and you dont have to move it yourself and throw the calibration out of whack
We still have aerosal TB cleaners in Kalifornia, but the formulations change from time to time as the CARB idiots change the rules. Cracks me up, they will make the formulation a little weaker & then you need to use a couple of bottles of the weak stuff to do the job instead of a couple of squirts of the old stuff that worked right away. Net, more "pollution" goes into the air.
you could do this...or get the wynns throttle body cleaner, put one bottle in the fuel tank and the other one spray every one or two seconds as someone revs the car for u :)

wldnt it be better to use 5 more min. undo neg a battery, the compltely remove throttlebody and clean the whole thing and not just the outside? depending on vehicle..good time to clean maf as well as connectors. use a sensor safe cleaner that does not leave an oil residue.
Another thing and im sure Eric already knows this but if its a drive by wire car as in it doesnt have a throttle cable and drives by the computer make sure you disconnect the connection going to the throttle at school we tested how powerful the motor was and it bent a 10mm wrench so if you have your fingers in the throttle and something triggers the motor you can say goodbye to your fingers!! Hi Eric I got a Mazda cx-7 and I have problems with cold starting,its like everymorning I try to start I have to try it a coupe of times and when its started it goes to 2500 rpm and slowly drops down ,however if the car is warm I dont any problem at all wiht starting.what do you think the problem is ,is because the carbon residue or something else,I have got the battary checked and it is fine.Thankx
CRC branded TB cleaner is safe for teflon coated throttle bodies. I think they were an experimental thing, because Ford only seemed to do it in the late 90s and possibly early 2000s. Possibly the thought was that the gunk would not stick to them and they would not need cleaning. Obviously, they still get dirty and still need cleaning at times.I know for a fact that CRC claims to be safe on coated TBs but Berryman B-12 Chemtool carb/choke/TB cleaner does NOT claim to be safe on them. Me and my friends did this to his Honda EuroR the other day... he noticed the throttle was disgustingly dirty. We dismounted the whole thing and cleaned it up it's way more efficient than just spraying over it.
Ok first, cleaning your throttle body is helpful to your car. It gets dirty! Just take it off and use a rag to get it clean, and dont put it back on "wet". I have a 05 mustang gt, I polished and cleaned my own tb and it works way better. Don't touch any air meters or mass air flow sensor. If you have funny idle try electric cleaner on the maf. Can also get dirty. Second, tb are not expensive! Dealers will rip you off all day! And mechanics! It's like 4 bolts and 2 plugs to take it off, why pay

get a good mechanic ppl. trying to fix your own car is a foolish idea. there is only one way to clean a throttle body. Remove it and all accessories and clean with proper solvent/de greaser. its not the 60's anymore. A throttle body can cost $1200.00+ not to mention a cat. conv. when its damaged from solvent sprayed in there $500.00+. Destroying my fuckin art on the internet
@clean04si ive never had problems with my throttle sticking on my 2004 mazda 6 but my parents have a 2009 mazda 6 and it was $1200 to replace and that was only when the car was a year old. warrenty covered it though
@ EricTheCarGuy i'd really suggest disconnecting the battery when moving throttle plate especially on "DRIVE BY WIRE" throttle bodies bright example would be my 07 chevy cobalt the reason for that is that even with the car completely off but battery connected the PCM/ECU seems to memorize the movement and incorrect positioning of the throttle plate and you can end up with few throttle response and idling problems and having to re-flash the PCM/ECU after that at the dealer depends on the car

Thanks for the video. I live in Scotland, and I have a 2001 Volkswagen Polo 1.0, which I don't think was sold in America. I had the problem of erratic idle, which was cured by cleaning the throttle body as demonstrated here. For this, the throttle body stayed on the car, but most people remove it to clean it. A problem with the VW throttle bodies, probably as well as on the Passat/Golf/Rabbit as on my Polo, is that it sometimes needs to be re-coded after it is cleaned.

hi eric, when i'm cruising on highway then when i press my clutch, my engine stall for a moment then back to normal again. could it be my air filter,dirty throttle body or what? what do you suggest to fix my car? tq
dirty throttle plates can also cause a bad idle as well, especially on drive by wire vehicles/ aka no throttle cable. happened to me on my chev tuck. when it was cold out would idle really bad. cleaned the throttle plates, got alot better, turned out i needed some programing updates for the throttle to correct idle surging when cold, but the dirty throttle plate wasn't helping matters.
Thanks for this video! My gas pedal started binding and I checked the pedal itself, the throttle cable and finally watched again this video and there you describe a similar situation and that was it! I cleaed it and now it works fine. I had cleaned the throttle body four months ago so I didn't expect it to gum up so soon. So thanks once again.

That looked pretty easy. I was thinking of doing that with a 97 RAV4 beater that I have. The gas pedal is hard to push (sometimes), and my idle on startup is kind of high (around 2100rpms) this lasts only a minute or so would this help it? Also does fuel Carb/injection cleaner (gas additive) help with that as well? Sorry if the question is dumb, I am not a mechanic!

@x1ofakind1x Sounds like a battery issue. BTW this video was intended for a sticking throttle cable it's not often cleaning the throttle will help with a stalling problem.
Eric, its not varnish, or shellac for that mater, its carbon and oil vapor build up, i tried putting some of it on a piece of oak and it didn't look very good!

my dad has a hyudai matrix (2004 model) and when i drive it trips longer than 45minutes keeping it steady at 110km/h when i try to accelerate or decelerate by just leaving the pedal it seems that (the pedal) goes in scales! is it a problem that can be solved by cleaning the throttle or something else? p.s. my dad does not feel it and when i tell him he says it's just me :/ thanks! :)

@NEVERENDS90 that's true i cleaned my mom's 2005 nissan altima and I had to put it through the idle re-learn process in order to have it idle correctly. U can use Techron fuel cleaner inorder to clean some of the carbon off the throttle plate.good luck!

@MrMdezee If someone adjusted the idle screw I would recommend turning it back to where it was originally and then checking for vacuum leaks. If you suspect an IAC problem replace it, I haven't had any luck cleaning them.
Eric you should also say that if you have a newer car or truck that does not have any throttle linkage but it is fly by wire do not open the throttle blade with your finger or anything else it will mess up the computer. You should have someone go in the vehicle and turn the key on ( do not start) and press the gas peddle to the floor for you and then clean the throttle body the way you said. Ed
@JammerEd2 Honestly this video was never meant for electronic throttles as you would not 'feel' the throttle sticking on those. The truth is that I don't recommend doing this to an electronic throttle. Thanks for the comment.
Had this problem some time ago with a European Focus (Zetec 1.6 SE engine). Had done 70 000 miles. The throttle was sticking a bit from 0-5% gas. Got some special cleaner from ford and cleaned off the small residues around the throttle plate. Has worked fine since.
HI Eric ur very detail videos i have a question for u i have 1999 ford windstar 3.0 engine all this time the check engine light has been on and ive been trying to turn it off! haha i put in a code reader and i got back p0156 bank 2 sensor 2 and p0401 circulation flow when i drive it around to a stop light it starts to sputter and sometimes it shuts off i dont want to buy a sensor then its the wrong part can u tell what might be the problem?
@psycho4334 Hard to say really but the codes are for 2 different things. the p0156 is for the O2 as you say but the p0401 is for the EGR. You need to diagnose the codes separately, you might check for vacuum leaks as that is a common cause of O2 sensor codes.
Hey eric what does a sticky film of black greasy substance by your throttle mean? Lol also how difficult are the ase's I'm taking my brakes & suspension.
@TheEsevee The film is normal in my experience especially as an engine gets older. As for how hard the ASE's are it's really subjective, study up and you should do fine. Good luck.

Hi Eric The Car Guy, I have a 2002 Mercury Cougar 2.5 V6 Engine. I am having a problem with Hesitation and Loss of Power upon heavy acceleration, what would you think the problem is? MAF? my Intake Runner Control not working properly? or my EGR? I am getting no check engine light, which is boggling my mind, so what do you suggest doing in this situation?
@tonytiger33 If you don't have a check engine light start with the basics like plugs and a fuel filter. DON'T start replacing sensors as they probably have nothing to do with it. You might also do a power balance test to see if you can find a particular cylinder that is at fault, I've done a video on this if that helps.
eric i think i did something wrong. i used this video to clean my throttle body (which i did) and when i put everything back together i started the car and took it for a drive.. but the gas pedal is really hard to push.. i took it back apart and realized when i push the gas pedal the butterfly only opens maybe a quarter of the way... HOWEVER my finger does allow me to open the butterfly completely so i think its a gas pedal problem? its a 98 dodge dakota..
@EricTheCarGuy; if you want the best cleaner use Bardahl carb and choke... I use to make it personaly and it works on every thing you need cleaned... It is expensive but it works damn good...

Eric, use BG Throttle Body Cleaner Part # 406. It will not harm any throttle body with the coating. You are correct you will only see this from Ford Products.
Will cleaning it help the car start? My engine runs perfect tru out the day and starts all the time except on the first start in the morning where I have to rev it to keep it going.
@RetroFan1992 Probably not. You may have an issue with the check valve in the fuel pump, see the Dissecting a Fuel Pump video I did for details on that.
Why oh WHY could I have not seen this video earlier. My wife took her car in for her oil change today and the place charged her 130 bucks for this. She neglected to tell me the gas pedal was sticky. I told her I could have done it for 10 bucks and 15 minutes of my time. Great video. Just wish I had seen it sooner. LOL.
@captclueless They most likley did not just spray cleaner in the throttle body they may have removed it and cleaned it that is what I have done to mine in the past.
If you think you see a lot of carbon just spraying it you should see the deep inside.

i do mine differently i spray and let it run until it runs pure then i wipe it out then begin moving the flap and spray the top repeating same process but this time i move the flap then i get a clean ragg and whip til i see no tar or black build up then crank her up lol

Help me pls. My RPMS dropped after i fixed all my bad things in my civic. first i changed the catalytic n o2 sensor then the spark plugs n then i saw the next day that my RPMS were in the middle of 0 n 1 i was like this is not normal. i cleaned my throttle but it didnt go up to normal. what could it be? i removed the spark plugs couple times n put them back in so i dont think is that. oh but sometimes my RPMS r normal like before

Thanks for the video. I live in Scotland, and I have a 2001 Volkswagen Polo 1.0, which I don't think was sold in America. I had the problem of erratic idle, which was cured by cleaning the throttle body as demonstrated here. For this, the throttle body stayed on the car, but most people remove it to clean it. A problem with the VW throttle bodies, probably as well as on the Passat/Golf/Rabbit as on my Polo, is that it sometimes needs to be re-coded after it is cleaned.

dirty throttle plates can also cause a bad idle as well, especially on drive by wire vehicles/ aka no throttle cable. happened to me on my chev tuck. when it was cold out would idle really bad. cleaned the throttle plates, got alot better, turned out i needed some programing updates for the throttle to correct idle surging when cold, but the dirty throttle plate wasn't helping matters.

That looked pretty easy. I was thinking of doing that with a 97 RAV4 beater that I have. The gas pedal is hard to push (sometimes), and my idle on startup is kind of high (around 2100rpms) this lasts only a minute or so would this help it? Also does fuel Carb/injection cleaner (gas additive) help with that as well? Sorry if the question is dumb, I am not a mechanic!

my dad has a hyudai matrix (2004 model) and when i drive it trips longer than 45minutes keeping it steady at 110km/h when i try to accelerate or decelerate by just leaving the pedal it seems that (the pedal) goes in scales! is it a problem that can be solved by cleaning the throttle or something else? p.s. my dad does not feel it and when i tell him he says it's just me :/ thanks! :)

@NEVERENDS90 that's true i cleaned my mom's 2005 nissan altima and I had to put it through the idle re-learn process in order to have it idle correctly. U can use Techron fuel cleaner inorder to clean some of the carbon off the throttle plate.good luck!

@MrMdezee If someone adjusted the idle screw I would recommend turning it back to where it was originally and then checking for vacuum leaks. If you suspect an IAC problem replace it, I haven't had any luck cleaning them.

Eric you should also say that if you have a newer car or truck that does not have any throttle linkage but it is fly by wire do not open the throttle blade with your finger or anything else it will mess up the computer. You should have someone go in the vehicle and turn the key on ( do not start) and press the gas peddle to the floor for you and then clean the throttle body the way you said. Ed

Had this problem some time ago with a European Focus (Zetec 1.6 SE engine). Had done 70 000 miles. The throttle was sticking a bit from 0-5% gas. Got some special cleaner from ford and cleaned off the small residues around the throttle plate. Has worked fine since.

@psycho4334 Hard to say really but the codes are for 2 different things. the p0156 is for the O2 as you say but the p0401 is for the EGR. You need to diagnose the codes separately, you might check for vacuum leaks as that is a common cause of O2 sensor codes.

@tonytiger33 If you don't have a check engine light start with the basics like plugs and a fuel filter. DON'T start replacing sensors as they probably have nothing to do with it. You might also do a power balance test to see if you can find a particular cylinder that is at fault, I've done a video on this if that helps.

eric i think i did something wrong. i used this video to clean my throttle body (which i did) and when i put everything back together i started the car and took it for a drive.. but the gas pedal is really hard to push.. i took it back apart and realized when i push the gas pedal the butterfly only opens maybe a quarter of the way... HOWEVER my finger does allow me to open the butterfly completely so i think its a gas pedal problem? its a 98 dodge dakota..
