Yes, I remember BOBLO ISLAND as a kid. It was one of a kind, especially the boat ride to and from the island. Thank you for the video, though it's kind've spooky, it does bring back memories of "WHAT WAS!"
too many porch monkees and other low life in detroit used this place... their skummy ways were not enough to keep this alive. God bless this system only being for the wealthy... that is what makes america great... keeping out the lowlife and near do wells. Only the upper crust of society should have access to this place. Sincerely, Leona Helmsley
Thanks for posting. I went on the Belle Cruise last week and I saw this. I didn't go to Cedar point. I went to Boblo Island. I loved the boat ride the best of all.
Boblo closed because white people stopped going there. White people was Boblo's financial base. White people stopped going because they didn't want to be around Black people on the boat. Since Black people can't afford to go to theme parks all the time the park closed
Thanks for the footage. I have really good memories of the ferry ride out there and having a picnic lunch and riding the rides. Awesome summer memories! It's too bad the world has become what it has.
They say the demise of the Island were our ignorant Detroiters acting Fools on the boat (particularly after the Riots). They stopped the Boat Rides in the 80s but the Park remained open because you could drive to it but it was so far away that people stopped going, they lost revenue and the park closed.
You are absolutely right vfreeck. Being a native Detroiter and having frequented Boblo Island it was a shame that it had to close and I blame the other "native" Detroiters for that. Some of decent ones appreciated such a treasure, quite a loss. Good reality video though jsealii.
You too Murray1069. The other natives that you speak of had no power whatsoever to make or break Boblo. The natives you speak of reaped benefits of Boblo but it was not built for them in the first place. Things rarely get shut down for native behavior, it stopped making money, so it closed. Until you move back to the city and fix the mess it is in right now, then shut the fuck up.
FYI I was born and raised in Detroit and the great times there are long gone especially with Kwame at the wheel. The lack of money came from the people not going because of the riff-raff monkeys ruining it for everyone. So Locmama I send a gracious "Fuck You!" back and wake up! By the way Kwame is in need of support are you in???
vfreek - You are right on target. Many can't answer that question as to why the park closed. Obviously you and murray and many other "real" Detroiters can. I'm sick and tired of giving it all away.
I am a native Detroiter in more ways than one, and I think that your implications are riddled with racism. I know when I am being insulted as a proud Detroiter. We did not ask to be here but we are and I suggest you find a way to appreciate human beings and stop placing blame. Sad that Boblo is gone and apparently idividulas who could have done something about it did not care enough to keep it. The riots were not about race but oppression and police brutality. You are ignorant.
boy that sure is a sad site though if anything. Think of all the kids that could have enjoyed that place today. Just the fact that you took a ferry to get to the theme park was the coolest idea ever. they could have competed with Ceder point. If not they should have merged and have ceder point run those 2 ferries on lake erie.
They were competitors in the 1980-1990's. I went to Bob Lo Island several times a summer as a kid. I agree with you, a ferry ride to an amusement park was out of this world!
Yeah that would be really cool to see someone walk up there and take some photos. I wonder if the train track is still there to for the 2 trains that were running.
Yeah I plan on going back and snooping around on shore but it seemd every weekend I have something else going on. There are a bunch of new mansion like houses on the north end of the island and the south end has a small playland on the beach. You can drive your boat up to it. The sight tower is still there (seen in the video) and there is also an abandoned light house tower. I'll post new stuff whenever I can get back there.
for recent bob-lo pics.

I heard someone wanted to make that place a condo haven??
LisaLisanme 3 years ago
Yes that is true. A lot cost $1,000,000. You have to take a ferry to get to the Island. It is very erie to see this.

I remember Boblo. I miss it so much. I think it was one of only few parks that had a ride in scary house too.
RIP Boblo (sob, sob).

The Columbia, Ste Claire stopped running Sept 2,1991. It's sad that we lost the island but the boat's are still around but in sad shape.

I heard that the island was turned into a private Condo community. You can still see the point from Lake Erie.
