Much slower than I'm used to hearing it, but she was a Mozart expert, wasn't she. Why does the description say this is from Cosi fan tutte, though, when it is from Der Schauspieldirektor? Seriously, they're not even in the same language! :-o
@LucyS3121 I'm also ashamed by this wrong description...
It is really slow, but I don't know any soprano besides Steber, that could sing this song so much slowed down. It's a very lovely and heart-moving rendition.
Probably the most underrated singer of all time, Eleanor Steber was - at her best - the closest thing to a perfect singer ever to set foot on an opera house stage.
She was a gifted artist. I never understood the criticism aimed against her. Especially in her Bayreuth Elsa. I thought she was second to none, on the same exalted plane as Elisabeth Grummer.
At the MET in NY, I think the problem was that Bing just didn't like her, or at least was more interested in promoting European artists in these roles. Also, Steber did want to start singing much heavier repertory, for which her voice possibly wasn't really suited. Who knows? Don't forget, 40 years ago, dramatic roles were cast with dramatic voices - it wasn't like nowadays, where soubrettes sing Elsa, Salome, Kaiserin etc. und buffo tenors are the leading Tristans and Tannhäusers.
@monpitt500 No argument here. I adored the woman, and I think her Elsa was wonderful. It's a shame the great "Frau ohne Schatten" rage that came in the 60's didn't happen one decade earlier - what a Kaiserin that would have been!!
@assindiastignani Steber actually did perform Der Kaiserin in Vienna under Karl Bohm as I recall. By all accounts she was fine in it, but I recall her commenting after hearing Eva Marton sing it at the Met that she didn't know how she'd made it through it. It was obviously not something she cherished having sung.
@Greg07623 Thanks for the info.I didn't know that.Isn't it interesting: how many Kaiserin's have we heard/suffered through in the past years, with less voice and nowhere near the artistry or identification with the music of R. Strauss, yet who are/were always totally convinced of themselves. What refreshing humility and artistic integrity on Steber's part to admit that perhaps the Kaiserin was a bit heavy for her. I do, however, know for a fact that she adored that role. Anyhow, what a gal!!
no, her voice topped out at about D. She really was a full lyric, not a colloratura. I have some recordings of her singing qui la voce, pretty stunning, sans highest notes. I have a dupuis le jour that is second to none!
My favorite version of this.....she really sells it! What sass :)

What a great singer. Most opera houses would kill to have a soprano like Steber.
