Thanks for this vid, remembering the brave 'nam vets.
1 more comment for hayseed1957. Some of us never knew we were hard to recognize when we came home. "...back in the World" we used to say re. coming home. We meant that - you folks back in the States were on a different planet. Some came home, some didn't. Some just thought they did. Not looking for pitty -it's probably like that in all unpopular, unsupported, undeclared wars. When it got down to it - we served for each other, not you folks.
Surfed here looking at my 60's folk music: I was a conscientious objector - not because I'm a pacifist - just wanted to help people & not shoot 'em. So off I went to Vietnam as a medic. Your posting here & your comments are a superb tribute to your brother, and are understood by those who served with him. It surely did change us all - and most have come thru it OK, one hopes; a little bent,a little wiser and a little more forgiving. But we remember & remember & remember , sometimes..........
i think everyone should be made to watch "dear america ,letters home from vietnam" as it really brings it home what these young guys went through.(i had to order it as could,nt get it in uk) brings a tear to my eye everytime. massive respect to all who served. I,m sure your brother has found his peace he deserves.
This is such a powerful video. I think people definitely tend to forget what it was like for all those men and kids to be over there, no matter what the war was all bout. Greatest respect for them and your brother.
Great post, I think too many people forget the things that should be rememberd. The youth now days complain about hard they have it, forgetting that most of the boys in Vietnam were 19 or 20 years. I was the lucky one. in 1968 I was drafted, but spent my time in Okinawa (M.P.) most of my friends were in Vietnam. Your post brought several tears to my eyes, but we all need to remember now and then. Thanks again. (895th M.P. Co.) 1968-1970.
Once you go through something like that, it seems like the rest of your life would be all Gravy. But my late brother Willie could not get the horrible things in his memory suppressed. He died in 1996, but really he died in a firefight in Vietnam in 1970. The memory of what happened over there consumed him.
RIP Willie, I hope you finally found the peace of mind that you were searching for.
I think this a good clip and moving. We in the UK are falling in Afghanistan now alongside the US and Germans and other allies to stop the terror threat . The song is about peace though not war. I hate seeing the coffins come home makes you wonder whether Afghanistan is worth it even worse for the lads that come home changed and damaged forever.
I fought in Vietnam in 1970-71 and have a son who has just enlisted in the U.S. Army. Afghanistan is a very difficult fight and I very much appreciate the UK who has made a significant contribution, along with Canada and other NATO nations. Until someone comes up with another approach to subways being blown up, buses, airplanes crashing, I think we have to pursue terrorists, they don't seem to want to engage in dialog. I wish it were not so.
I hope your son keeps safe and you must be very proud of him. I would say abouit the Afghanistan issue though that there are memorials there to British interventions about 150 years ago. In the UK terrorists have been Muslims who brought up in this country. There must be an end to the Israeli persecution of the Palkestinians which is a moral disaster which the terrorists use to recruit angry young Muslims for a start. Anyway the fighting goes on for now , I hope your son keeps well.
Look into the eyes of these fathers and sons. They were having it pretty rough. Many (not shown) had another kind of expression you may not recognize...one of fear and anguish and pain and horror. Im sorry this country sent you to Vietnam. But I know you did your best and I love you for it. Every soldier that served in that war has my undying respect. Every politician that endorsed that war must burn in hell....forever.
i have 2 great great great grandfathers that served in the lousianna 96th in the Civil war i have 2 grandfathers and a Great uncle (Geat Uncle KIA in daylight bombing Raids over Berlin) that were in WWII i have 8 uncles that were in the vietnam war i have one of theyre steel pot helmets and i plan to serve in our armed forces thank you all for your service I cannot thank you enuff i currently reenact (with airsoft guns) for the 28th Infantry
This film, from another generation, fills me with memories. The faces and eyes of war are always the same, wherever it may be. If we were allowed to see them from Afghanistan they would tell the same story. Sadly we don't. Regardless of beliefs, eyes and faces around the world would look at and would be seen by a camera, and thus you, the same way, regardless of what they believe.
I realize that i was a litlle boy at the time in the 60es. I felt safe at my parent's You Sir, were somewhere in the fields of Vietnam . There wasn't one single day that there was an item about the vietnam war. I'm 53 now en feel deep respect for a man like you MajorHud. A man who did sevice for his country. You and your fellow-veterans Sir, will never be forgotten by a document like Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam.
You are most kind. We should think about the young people from both The Netherlands, U.S. who are fighting in Afghanistan. My youngest son is just now enlisting. Americans do not always think they are right but they feel strongly about being an American. My son is the 4th generation of my family to serve in our Army. Again thank you.
I'm a Vietnam Veteran and see the faces of my friends nearly every night. If I didn't I would miss them but it took getting used to. I can't believe I lost my youth. My emotions aren't all that different than when I was in Nam. Thank you for your concern and good wishes. Peace comes a little at a time.
Makes me sad. Especially because people will forget. I'm 28 and will propably never fully understand what people had to go through...all I can do is try. 5 stars.
I'm 59 years old and was 20 when I was in Nam. The faces are so familiar though I'm not sure that I ever met the men in the pictures, but I looked in the faces of hundreds like them. Eight months into my tour, I met my fiance in Hawaii, I tried to smile but she took one look at me and started crying, I was cleaned up but must have been a sight. She married me anyway. I see my buddies each night that I close my eyes.
Thanks for dropping by. My big brother would have been 59 years old this year also. Two tours in Vietnam changed him pretty drastically. I can tell you that it has nothing to do with strength or courage, if your brother made it back he had both. In my case, by some blessing, my mind has blocked out the very worst images. I still can't sit with my back to anyone, I flinch at unexpected sounds and I don't go for walks when there is a bright moon. I will wonder why I'm ok till I die, and then I'll talk to your brother about it.
I've been out of the USMC for 2 years and I still get nightmares about Iraq. I can only imagine 30 years later, when the kids I know died could've had a family and grand kids.
tab46619, I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my brother to the Vietnam war too. But he did not die untill 1996. He did two tours in that hell hole. And he came back a very changed individual. I hate that war.

Mirlin235, Sorry for your loss as well. Those poor men are on alert 365 days a year. what hell that must be.
58 000 men were killed during vietnam war, most of them were between 18 and 21 y/o may of them came back addicted to any drug, and further more they were critiziced by many! So where is the common sense
Thanks for dropping in. I don't think the 58,000 dead men did many drugs, (LOL) but the over 2,000,000 survivors did a LOT. My brother had a terrible experience on one of his return trips in the airport. He was called a baby killer etc. He served two tours over there. He was NEVER the same after serving in Vietnam. what was the reson of this war ??
hamzah336 2 months ago
@hamzah336
Has many reason!
With Vietnamese( I'm Vietnamese), we want independence and freedom
With USA they want agaisnt communist, and take benefit from war.
USA lost, because Vietnamese will fight to the end people to gain independence.
