  • harmonhall it's the best

  • it looks like consuming too much time...

  • It works, that's for sure, but the language taught seems to be too advanced for the level of the students - kind of like teaching fractions to four year-old kids. Also, no wonder the teacher is so slim, he never stops moving - if I were one of his students I'd get dizzy just from watching him, sure seems like a good way to lose weight.. teach the silent way or ..the silent weight ;-)

  • No method is rubbish. If a method has helped a second language speaker develop grammatical and/or communicative competence in the slightest degree, then it has play an important part in their language development. Any good second or foreign language teacher/educator would know that.

  • Silent my rear end, all he does is talk, and the lesson is totally teacher-centred.

  • Teachers don't have to be silent in the silent way, they just don't model. I agree, though that this guy makes it very teacher-centred. not exactly what gattegno intended. it takes a lot of confidence to go in there agenda-free and just work on the students while they work on the language.

  • This method is rubbish.

  • don't be too quick to dismiss it. There are several ways to utilize this approach but the outcome is always the same: thoroughly minimized TTT and maximized STT. I decided to give it a go for parts of my lesson and the students all seemed to enjoy the confidence they gain first through guessing and then through saying things with authority. I'm just a prompter and a model. Takes a while, but it pushes you to be creative while encouraging students to take ownership of their language skills.

  • I wish they had taught me that way! :(

  • This is a fine example of a Silent Way class for non-beginners. The students are dealing with reality and learning how to describe it in English. They are talking and constantly working on their production. The teacher is getting the students to self-correct. Awareness is taking place.

  • why pull rank?

  • I agree with Gary Robert. This is not really The Silent Way. The students are in a relatively passive role with a great many display questions as well as repetition. Perhaps it's a combination of the Audio-Lingual Method and The Silent Way?

  • the teacher isn't very silent!?

  • i ilke this method !!
