  • The simple point is this..... the Australians were very brave....

  • war is war, in the end no one wins, this would have to be one of the best endings a film could ask for, have to do a damn english speech on it -_- but the gallipoli campaign was said to be a failure, but in this light it truly showed what being an australian is all about, bravery, strength, mateship, these men will not be forgotten and australia wouldn't be such a great nation without them

  • Beautifully stark movie!

  • This would make me ashamed to be British if I was even remotely

    concerned with such bollocks.

    To sleep perchance to Zzzz.........

  • Who are those heartless douche bags who dislike this?

  • Çanakkale geçilmez

  • I watch this movie in Socials class. I was the only one in the room that cried at this part.

I guess I'm the onyl one who had heart.

  • It was a pointless war and those amazing young men were sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter NOT to keep ANYONE safe, but to line the pockets of imperialists and stroke the egos of our "leaders". They were brave and Australia should be proud of them. But, we should all be ashamed at the price we keep making soldiers pay for the enrichment of the few.

  • :'( I really liked Archy

  • Watched this when ity first came out in the Cinema.

    It was packed.

There was not a dry eye when the film was over.

  • terrible lost!Fuck English!!!go Australia!4ver Archy!!!:(

  • war never changes

  • This was a great scene, they knew they weren't coming back. That had to be rough anybody notice that Archie doesn't even have a gun?

  • @dengeist i think him being weaponless is a symbol of how hopeless it all was.

  • I watched this in school not that long ago and at the end everyone went "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" We talked about how Archie dies is the same way he finished his training at the start with his arms back and chest forward. So its basically like his race is finished, as well as his life.

  • @kitkatkristy33 yeah we just finished watching it yesterday, every one was screaming "RUN YOU BLOODY IDIOT RUN!" when the guy was trying to tell them to stop the attack. not a single person didnt have a tear in their eye....

  • @CullenClanGirl Haha xD We thought the ending was crap and a few people said "Is that it?"

  • @kitkatkristy33 BAHAHA yes! there was like silence for a second then someone said, 'did you pause it miss?' XD

  • @CullenClanGirl Hahah! xD

  • Archie would never have been killed in the charge on the Turkish trench if that army doctor hadn't passed Snowy.

  • Great movie. I like the running/racing theme throughout the movie.

  • Atatürk said: "You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well..."

    What a great man!

  • poor b*st*rds...

  • Thank you for your sentiments - it is wonderful that others can appreciate the sacrifice of these young men - it is a great shame that old men send young men to die in war - it also ironic that if 'negotiations" had gone differently the Turks and the Aussies and Kiwis would have been allies! - but for the sake of two warships Turkey would have sided with the "Allies" - Please note that Kemal Ataturk is a revered figure in Australian/New Zealand/Turkish relations

  • The Australians go "over the top" in WWI. Mel Gibson sprints too late to let them know too late that the general has called off the attack. Too late. One of the best anti-war movies ever made...The ending says it all..

  • I think it's a bit scary that people take this movie as a glorification of the bravery of the ANZACS. Yes, of course that is true but the real message is that war is completely insane and evil and the real courage comes in refusing to fight it at all!

  • what r your legs

    springs... steel springs

    what r they gonna do

theyre gona hold me down the track

    how fast can u run

    as fast as a leapord

how fast r u gonna run

    "as fast as a leaopard"

then lets see you do it !!!

  • Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives.. you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now living in our bosom
  • I am so proud to be born in WA. *Cry* Brave soldiers, we'll never forget how you fought for us. Without us, Australia wouldn't be known as the Brave and Courageous country. Everything goes to you. *Cry*

  • @AnatolyaTurkiye

You are obviously an uneducated retard. As an Australian, I have Turkish friends, I nearly married a turkish girl. My grandfather was in the Light Horse, and Australians in general have great respect for the Turkish people.

You have insulted both countries, you stupid fool.

  • Comment removed

  • @AnatolyaTurkiye I'm a little confused as to how you can say "fuck Aussies". Have you met any? and if you have I'm sure not all Aussies are as bad as you think them to be.

  • Nah, war doesn't really change much in the long run...empires come and go but humanity marches on, regarless of what oligarchy is in power.

  • Any man who can watch this without tearing up has no soul.

  • @Rodriguez87 very true, you are so right...this is such a moving film.....

  • one day Aussie an Turkey where enemy of each other, but now they are close friends--proof; the letter of Ataturk to mothers of anzacks=> and i am a Turk, and i say,Anzack's are my brothers

  • Mel gibson pissed me off in this ending... instead of pissing himself face-down in the dirt those few seconds could have saved all those people's lives.

Braveheart makes up for that though. :)

  • I Watched this today at school and me and all my friends were crying i no its just a movie but its soooo sad to see that what actually happended back then.

    RIP All those people

  • thats a sad movie but its alos AUSTRALIAN!

  • sad scene..sorry guys but remember this scene before you messing with turks.

  • @wtfidascrappy

The Turks got beat in the end, AFAIK.

  • @FlowerPax in the gallipoli?

  • @wtfidascrappy

The War was not decided at Gallipoli, my friend.

  • @FlowerPax yea yeah it wasnt..

  • This movie or at least the ending shows the true pointlessness of War. I always say there is nothing more vain nor as stubborn and pointless as war. And, if i maybe blunt, there has seldom been a war that has made some great and good change upon the world.

  • @Medusa0999 What do you mean? War changes everything. The Nazis are dead. The Japanese Empire is no more. Korea and Vietnam have the governments they deserve and the American Empire will end as soon as we lose the next war. Every significant change in human development has occured through war or it's effects. Don't be simple because you don't like it.

  • @Braunheim The printing press? Domestication of plants and animals? There are many enormous changes that happen outside the context of war.

  • I hate racism and pointless arguments over youtube. No on gets anywhere, and in the end we all get upset over someone else's comment. I hate to use this saying, and I mean no offence to anyone, but 'online fighting is like the special olympics, even if you win, you're still retarded'. I hate to see comments being racist to those who were in the Gallipoli war - they were all incredibly brave, and anyone who says different should put themselves in that position to see how they handle.

  • @allyxo1 Gallipoli War...?

  • @allyxo1 Absolutely correct! I would fight alongside you any time friend.

  • Comment removed

  • @allyxo1 very well said

  • @allyxo1 It's a shame that you deplore racism by using an equally tasteless slur. Still, I agree that trying to win an argument on here is not only impossible, it's moronic.

  • I love this movie. We watched this movie for our History class and the topic was World War 1. Not many people appreciated this movie the way I did but I thought the actors did a wonderful job. I didn't really like the character of Archy but Mark Lee still did a superb job at portraying the character. This was also the first movie I'd ever seen Mel Gibson in.

  • So sad! Those poor Aussies.

  • I'm glad that movies like this are made, even if they are hollywoodised or anything, it at least gives people insight onto what actually happened or at least will leave it feeling some sympathy and respect for men like this...

  • What's the name of the piece being played in the background? The name eludes me.

  • @supernole100 the music is Adagio of Albinoni.

  • Thanks a bunch man!

  • cant watch....... how would you feel? contemplated certain agonising death by gunshot. dont think committment like that is round today hope kids of today see this

  • 'As fast as a leopard.'

Most touching scene in the whole movie. Amazing.

  • @WillowwValentine

One of the most touching movies ever.

  • best war film i've ever seen.

  • yes a great movie but i dont like it how the faggoty american actors use this fake as american accept, giving an unfair stareotype on us australians, cos we sound nothing like it :(

  • I hope you realise this is an Australian Movie, not American...

  • i hope you relize its got yankie cunts like Mel Gibson in it withthis discusginly rasist accent in it which gives a bad name for real aussies cos we get branded with accents lyk in this movie when we sound nothing like it...

  • Mel Gibson is Australian!

He went to NIDA, which is the University I will be going to In sydney, it's a Drama university that Cate Blanchett went to as well!

I don't know what you sound like, but me and everyone i know sound pretty much like what they do in the movie...

and by the way, we can never EVER get history right, because history is never properly recorded like on video tapes and stuff...

  • yeh but Mel dosnt live in australia, he has an american accent and he lives there so i consider him american... and noone i know sounds lyk that

  • just to clear up any confusion Mel Gibson was born in America but then moved to Australia when he was 12. He did study acting at NIDA. :)

  • @jealousofu he was born in australia im pretty sure

  • @mzbrunette149 lol. He is both. If he was born on American soil, then he is considered a natural American citizen by birthright. So he can still get Australian citizenship, but he will always be an American as well unless he specifically leaves the country and renounces citizenship at a consulate. We used to see him as Australian. But now he almost always speaks with an American accent in films. So I forget he is Australian too. Similar situation to John Barrowman in Britain.

  • I watched this movie in primary school in year 7. Really good movie ! But sad. We were doing a assignment on Gallipoli.

  • I remember when i saw this at the cinema when it was released, at the end of the film there was not a dry eye in the place, and some bloke yelled out pommie bastards, Brisbane Australia 1981.

  • I hope you have learned since that the officer that gave the order was not British but an Austrlian by the name of Antill. To add insult to the injury another wave was ordered after the one shown here with similar results.

  • Col Hughes and Col Antill were both Australian Officers and ordered FOUR waves of attack!

I cannot imagine how those brave men waiting in the fourth wave must have felt having seen the murderous charges that had already failed.

  • Fark! :(

  • @fieldmor77

The generals in that battle WERE Australians. They just had british accents, which wasn't that unusual at the time.

  • Perfect use of Adagio.

  • One of the saddest endings to any film. Watched this many times, the first, I could hardly draw my breath and burst in to tears. Maginificent movie making!

  • Its sad that hardly anyone here is appreciating the video, but instead engage in pointless, stupid arguments

  • In one of the strangest outcomes of this campaign in 1915 the Anzacs and Turks developed a deep respect for each others bravery - it is sad that some fanatics use this battle to support there blind fundementalism - I am sure that the Turksih soldiers would not appreciate the misuse of their sacrifice

  • "The greatest love that can come from war comes from the the mortal combat of foes."-Molanlabexm15

  • we were defending our country

  • @croweater52 AS a Turkish woman i wouldn't agree more..When i watched gallipoli for the first time i was only 15, i just couldn't stop crying for days for archie and frank and for all the other boys..And i had grown up with a story of our people's bravery in that war..I loved Anzacs so much and just wished that we had never killed one another. And at the age 42 now i still don't know who to feel angry with because of that war and for all the people who died there. War is bad..

  • @demeter506 Anzacs Armenians whatever Turks have to be killing someone. THEY CAN'T HELP IT THEY'RE MUSLIMS.

  • @Zardoz215 I think you are just feeling envious and jelous that here in these conversations so many people from opposite sides in this war are experessing their humanly feelings towards one another and agreeing in one thing "We had all been bloody cheated" I believe you cannot even tolerate to see anything good in Turkish people and they have to be all bad for you..

  • @Zardoz215 I think you are just expressing your own racism towards Turkish people whatever nation you belong to.. You sound very mean and full of hate..it is sad that you come here and try to spread that kind of a thing..it does not belong to me boy, whatever it is that your are feeling it only belongs to you..I love armenians, specially the ones in Turkey because they don't hate us.. They are just our neighbours, we live together and share so mana things. I wish you could know such a thing..

  • @Zardoz215 And besides muslims are not the baddies in today's horrible wars. Once upon a time those anzacs were told Turks were bad and their enemies. They came to the other end of the world to fght with people they don't even know. Now the whole world is being told that a;lmost by the same countries that muslims are the troubles of this world, lets kill them. And some are dying in Afganisthan and Iraq as a result. Again young and unaware peopel..

  • @Zardoz215 while actually those countries who are spreading this hate and lies are the ones who invaded thir land and who are caliming that we need to stay, you need us, you cannot manage yourselves without us bloody bla bla bla...And when they say no these invaders will just send a few cruises to convince those muslims. And when they fight back they are terrorists.

  • @Zardoz215 Although we all know these invaders are there there for their resources and that is the gas in afganisthan and the oil in Iraq..Lets not argue about the very. simple facts that we all know. Muslims are the victims, they just happened to be living in areas where the oil and gas resources of this world existed..USA is very clever with these kinds of manipulations..Muslims are being killed because of not giving what they have to the USA..Even the kids know that, lets nor argue ok?

  • @Zardoz215 2 million muslims died in Iraq since the war started and there is no Bagdat on the map anymore which was one of the greatest cities of this world..That was the peace the western world and America brougth to the middle east..I wonder what would happen if they said we are here to make wars if their peace is this..And please lets not defend such a violnece and horror on the ground of nationalism..You deserve this because you are muslims and such..its disgusting..

  • Haven't seen this movie in years, I had forgotten how great it was. Very powerful ending.

  • I just thought it was good movie that's all - no comment on who participated, what races suffered the same or worse than....or any of that - it is a statement on war and the futility - for those who want to turn this into a political debate....probably to go seek a forum that welcomes it

  • well tempac91 is just a punk bitch who thinks he knows everything

  • Nice clip.

  • tempac91, u r literally the personification of the word d-bag.

  • NickRica2, you are a typical keyboard warrior in addition to an Armenian Holocaust denier.

  • i believe that the armenian genocide happened though

  • y is there a bunch of albanian ppl mad at u tempac91 ? did u accuse them of genocide too ?

  • Thank you for the "lovely" comment you left on my page which I deleted after blocking your ass.

But yeah, my page is a regular love fest. :-p

  • those guys really want to fuck u in the ass dont they ?!?! i dont get it, in their culture does that make them sound tough ?!?!

  • The comment you posted and then subsequently removed was "GO COUNT UR DICK !!!!!!!!". I guess I was right; you are indeed dimwhitted.

  • haha, i had a burst of randomness, havent u ever seen any of the tourettes guy videos.

  • u spelled dimwitted wrong dumbass.

  • i bet ur from the uk arent u ?

  • Oh, I got it right the first time. :-)

  • u might want 2 look at a dictionary dumbass.

  • You need a clue.

  • u need a clue, u always think ur right, u need 2 look up dimwitted in the dictionary, cause i did, and it doesnt have an "h" in it.

  • Like I said, keep looking for that elusive clue.

  • That's a relief. You are not a completely dimwitted.

  • Comment removed

  • Australians weren't the only ones at Gallipoli, everyone forgets New Zealanders were at Gallipoli! That's why they're called ANZACs people!

  • My bad. There were also French and Indians and soldiers from the "Newfoundland". All brave souls, indeed.

  • Actually, Turkey and Germany were ALLIES. Turkey was in fact helping the Nazis to conquer the world.

Thank God for the brave Brits and Aussies who prevented their plans.

  • in WW1 there was no such thing as nazis dumbass

  • The Nazi party came to power in the 30's, but Germans didn't simpply wake up on day and decided to turn to fascism. This happened progressively from the start of the century.

  • u need to brush up on ur history dumbass, the nazis party started in the 1930s as a result of the german ppl being dissatisfied with the terms of the german surrender in WW1, and the state of the german economy. really stop trying to be smart, somebody back me up on this.

  • The core ideology solidified with the formation of the Nazi party, but said ideology existed long before.

If you are too ignorant to back up your stance, then keep away, fool.

  • u said before that turkey was helping the NAZIS in WW1, but NAZI germany did not fucking exist until the 1930's, so in fact the turks WERE NOT helping the fucking NAZIS, because there was no such thing at the time, jews could fight in the german army in WW1, so obviously they were not fighting 4 the nazis, because I REPEAT !!!!!, there was no such thing as NAZIS !!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a simpleton you are!

As I said before, Nazism didn't simply sprout in one day! The shift to nazism was gradual and the result of a long string of events dating back to the 19th century.

Also, Turks were on Germany's side in both wars, but they turned on them about the time WW2 ended so that they didn't have to incur the Allies' wrath (and lose money/land in the process).

  • i agree it was a string of events leading back, but there were no NAZIS until the 1930s

  • the germans were not trying to conquer the world in WW1

  • No, just the much-coveted ad highly-profitable African colonies.

  • WW1 was not about africa

  • War is always about more money and land is better than money, hence why the African colonies were sought after by the 3 main European powers.

  • WW1 had nothing to do with fucking africa, hence ur a fag 4 keep on saying hence.

  • You are as illiterate and ignorant as you are spiteful and homophobic. :-)

  • crappy sad ending.... good movie

  • population control

leaders figured out energy to construct bullets much more economical than energy to feed population

you just know some asshole had a similar spreadsheet before iraq/afghanistan or every other war... but ultimately it is the fault of humans for breeding too much in the first place

  • Lest we forget

  • This shows the futility of war. I know it is necessary sometimes but god what a waste.

  • The whole point of this movie is the futility of war. And here there are people with comments full of hatred. I'm so glad Australia and Turkey have such respect for each other now. I don't think any other former enemies do. I hope it continues.

  • to that stupid dick head who talks about the armenian genocide...dude at this moment there are over 30000 armenians in turkiye at this very moment. if we wanted to kill all u stupid armenians we didnt have to take all u guys all the way to syria and lebonan, n u know why we took u over there??? so u guys dont stab us from our back while we were in ww1...coz many of u did that was the only reason...just like the americans with the japs in the ww2..if u wanna learn about genocide go to bosnia!!!

  • Omq sadd dat archiee died poor frank !

  • Because West write to hıstory.Ofcoure they wouldn't side with Turks. But you know what is petty that people live in N.America talks about genocide? How do they get that new world?By asking natives to give them a place to live? When it is come to what happend in Armeinan or Greeks is that IAGS knows what heppend to Turks in Balkans? I teel you what happend you don't need to go 100 years back just look what happend in Bosnia!Mid.of Europe.Don't tell me rubish!!

  • Hey Arkin...lighten up!

The west may have written a lot of history but this is a clip from an Australian movie (not US) with no political or religious message - its simple message is just about the futility and tragedy of war.

I'm Australian and proud that some of my best friends are Turks. 'Arkadash ve Kardesh!'... we are Friends and Brothers.

We have the greatest respect for those that fought in the Gallipoli campaign.

  • That wasn't about this video. I wright that answer to who keep bringing Genocide. I do have full respect to people who lost their life in Gallipoli.

  • Gustav Mahler music

  • this music is the "adagio" of Tommaso Albinoni (italy) please!

  • a great, powerful movie, one of my top war movies!

  • I had a panic attack watching this ending once. Seriously messed up. Such is war.

  • Famous freeze-frame @ 3:15

  • .....then let's see you do it!!!!!

  • long live ozzies!

  • 1:34 I forgot to mention this point as well.

You see Archy's medal for running, next to

his watch. Implying his time is running out.

    Brilliant directing from Peter Weir.

  • "Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries... Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have Become our sons as well." -Ataturk, 1934
  • What about the victims of the Armenian Genocide? Are they welcome in your country as well?

  • Don't try to be a smart ass. Armenians are welcome in Anatolia just as much as any one else who loves those lands. However, most Armenians I've met here in Canada need to be more open minded. They have been taught to hate since they were born. And they will teach their kids the same. No one should hate any one or group of people based on their background. With all this blind hatred, people get to miss out on meeting and knowing some potentially wonderful people.

  • According to the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), Turkey is guilty of committing genocide against Armenias, Assyrians, Anatolian Greeks and Pontic Greeks.

To this day, Turkey still denies everything.

  • take your racial hatred elsewhere mate.

no one wants to hear it.

  • To which of my comments did you reply? Was it the comment about the Armenian Genocide?

I feel sorry for you that you think murdering almost 2 million people (Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks) is a justifiable action. Such a horrible tragedy...

  • go cry elsewhere u stupid fuck.

no one wants to hear u bitch n moan about something u have no idea about...

were you around that time? No.. so SHUT IT.

  • What a typical denialist you are!

I wasn't born during the Holocaust either, but I still care about what happened to the Jews.

  • stop being such a fag talking about the armenian genocide. ur just coming off as a little bitch, "thank god for the brave brits, and aussies", "what about the victims of the armenian genocide?" u dont know shit about anything, war sucks get over it, it happened 100 years ago anyway

  • to tempac91: there have been many "alleged" genocides over the years, the jews, the armenians, the american indians, the bosnians, even the irish by britain. im not denying any of that, but racial injustice has been around 4ever, so get over it, i guarantee whatever race u r has comitted attrocities at one time.

  • To NickRica2: Wake up and look around. These are not "alleged" but factual crimes supported by a heap of evidence.

Also, your suggestion that we shouldn't mention these events, lest we offend the offenders' compatriots, is ridiculous and can only leads us to repeating the same mistakes.

The Armenian genocide did happen and so long as Turkey does not recognize it or does not issue a single apology to the victims, then it is bound to happen again.

  • i never meant i thought they were "alleged", i didnt want to offend any turks, stop crying about the armenians tho, these young turks arent responsible 4 it, im not saying to forget about genocide, just stop shoving it in everyones face, its not ur job

  • Why would you say that these young Turks are responsible for an event that occured a century ago? It doesn't make any sense.

  • i said they ARE NOT responsible, so dont throw the armenian genocide in their face

  • I wonder why you are so enraged by the mere mention of the Armenian Genocide.

Is this subject so much of a taboo where you live?

  • no, i see that im not the only one who is telling u 2 stop crying about it like a little bitch, r u trying 2 get a nobel peace prize ? i dont get it ?

  • Why do you complain at the mere mention of the Armenian Genocide? You can't simply erase past by bitching to other people.

  • When you are trying to play-down an event as tragic as the Armenian Genocide, you come across as a coward.

Also, tone down the "fag talk". There is no need to show your love for all minorities in one post!

  • Very powerfull ending. Archy died without his gun and his chest out, as if he were at the finish of a race. Indeed he was after all a champion runner, not a soldier.

  • god i cry so hard when he says fast as a leopard!

  • oh god i cry every ime i watch this its so so sad!!!

  • I agree. This was a movie to show the bravery of Australians. At no point did it say that we wer the ONLY brave ones!

Also these people wer trying to sell the movie for money... they probably discussed that the idea of british commanders was a better story. Who cares about what countries what!

Every soldier from everycountry feels pain. When your dieing it doesn't matter which name of soil you wer born on.

  • God damnit, why can't you all just go yell obscenities at each other somewhere else? This movie was great, it doesn't matter WHAT FUCKING NATIONALITY YOU ARE. It's not meant to fucking say "Australia did the best in WW1, everyone else were pussies." This moview was meant to show how heart-wrenchingly foolish WW1, and other wars, were, through a medium you'd actually CARE. Read about Gallipoli in a book, sure, high casualties. But to see this, the story of a man with a future, and watch him die..

  • great text man, absolutely right.

  • The commanders at the Nek Gen Hughes and Col Antill were Australian Officers who sent wave after wave of brave Lighthorsemen to their death.

Why they could not have stopped after the first wave had 90% casualties is beyond belief.

How they must have felt in the fourth wave I cannot begin to imagine.

  • why is there so much hate on the internet??? This is a great film & Australia is the best country iv ever been 2. Im english as well it was beautiful and the people are amazing. The weather pretty awesome 2 !!

  • australia is the best country in the world...sorry you stupid yanks

  • If the film was to make australia look good who cares it was still a kick ass film.

And the film pearl harbour made out that the enigma code was broken in USA..

it was actually solved in UK
