Also, she speaks so much of the Big Agra use of her systems but we need to be aware of the codex alumintarius/Agenda 21 systems bankrupting our organic farms who already can't afford these elaborate humane slaughter lines. The large factories may be able to afford humane slaughter but then they treat the meat with viruses, and no mention is being made of the disgusting hormone injections, miserable GMO animals only BIg Ag creates, or the fact that e.coli epidemics all come from BIG AGRA farms!
Now if we could get McDonalds and the other food giants to quit peppering the food with deadly chemicals and drugs and GMO's shown to increase infertility we could consider ourselves humanely treated. Until then people are gonna keep eating that poison and wondering why they have so many degenerative diseases with no "apparent" cause. Lay off the GMO Soy, all you high and mighty vegans! It's killing you! 90% of world soy crop is GMO.
Eating meat is a natural part of our diet, and unfortunately animals have to die to be eaten, that is the cycle of life. However, Dr. Grandin has done amazing work in order to make the process of slaughtering animals as humane as it can possibly be. If a slaughterhouse is designed and built properly, these animals really have no idea that they are going to die, not even in the final moments before they are stunned. You can't ask for more humane method of slaughter than that.
Yes it is humane to make them comfortable. You will never turn everyone vege. I know that in other countries they are working toward making things better as well. I love a good steak nothing better. I usually eat fish and chicken for my health however I will have a nice 2 inch thick NY Strip Steak medium rare. Nice and bloody. and @Catawba2 flesh is healthy to eat just in moderation.
pew it is hard to watch for me but she is really making everything as "humain" as possible. I hope all slaughter houses listen to her in every detail. I think eating meat is a luxury. People certainly dont need to eat it all day every day as an animal had to die. I dont like Mc Donalds or big cheap meat eats that sell so much meat.
She's right about small operations without regulations. Pew it is so hard, becoming vegetarian is hard for people I know. I hope Mc donalds and places make a bal menu
When I was younger, I helped with the butchering of animals, cattle, pigs, and rabbits. My dad did his best to instantly kill the animal, just turn the lights out on the being. Until I saw the massive slaughter houses and terrified animals, I not see how important it was. I do admire Grandin and her work.
I'm fairly convinced that eventually, we will stop depending on other animals for food. Until then, these advances are the best thing for them - to reduce suffering in the current system until more people can be empathetic with animals.
It's pretty amazing to find that it's MCDONALDS that is supporting this humane slaughter stuff.
@librarychair Mc Donald have to as there has been a lot of scandals and concern and they have to much money to loose if they dont do things right. However Mc Donald's probably dont just get there meat from usa controlled slaughterhouses. Check other country's were it goes back to horror.
I am living proof that we do NOT need ANY meat or dairy products in our diet. In fact, it is detrimental to our health to eat flesh. Update your ideas, and learn more - you have the internet too to increase your knowledge - use it wisely!
stop the crap about asking the whole world to go vegan. some nutrients are only present in meat, and we can't completely omit it from our food. Eating meat is unavoidable for some, but at least try doing it in a humane way.
It's not "crap" - millions of people live quite well on a plant based diet. Certainly eating flesh is "avoidable" in any civilized country. There is not "humane" meat - It is you and your ilk that wish to perputate this myth that are flinging the crap. It's a lie -animals feel fear and pain - 20% of these animals aren't stunned correctly and proceed to slaughter aware. Read the Washington Post article - THEY DIE PIECE BY PIECE. For health and heart - GO VEGAN
I like Grandin. She is asking the system to act humane. And the more the system acts humane the better the system runs as far as productivity too. But she is still part of the system. Nothing is just black & white, all good or all bad. She is doing good work in a system that is fundamentally weird to the bone. Predators capture their meals, we are mass producing meals like insects. Meat companies are not predatory they are "insectatory".
Last week the AWI and FSIS released a 5 year study titled "Crimes without Consequences". It documents slaughterhouses frequently have violations to the "humane slaughter act". Many animals are dis-assembled while fully concious. The FDA shows little concern to correct these problems. There's a 15% chance that what's on your plate was tortured before death.
"Humane Slaughter" is a contradiction in terms.10billion times a year! Go Vegan!
This report is on the AWI website see for yourself....
stunning is humane if performed correctly and done with properly maintained stunners and correctly trained staff. It's a lot better than the days of sledgehammers and icepicks prior to 1958 HSA which was amended in 1978
The fact is that we are not in the wild and to kill we need weapons - unlike our four legged friends ( or birds ! ) who are giften with natural weapons of which to hunt and survive. Gone are the days where one would shoot a deer for the winter's meat - how selfish and greedy have we become and the animals suffer because of it ! this is a big bloody and cruel business !
Probably more accurate to say that in the wild it's kill or go hungry. Isn't it odd how much emotion this topic stirs? I do think that since we do know how, we owe it to "nature" to kill humanely in order to fill our plate.

Some animals eat plants, other animals eat other animls, humans eat both, that is just the way our world works
I think its much better that we find ways to be humane to the animals we eat, than to tear their throats out like wolves and wild predators
This woman does wonderful work!!!

"Humane" and "Slaughter" are oxymoron but it's a start. I am looking forward to the day where meat with out consciousness can be grown in a factory.

I do not care if people eat meat as long as they think of the living animal(s) it was rather than the dinner it is.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion. Too bad, in the wild, animals do not share your morals. In the wild, it's kill or be killed.
