I don't know why some people are talking about to use more bow, 'cause this is the right amount to be used for tuis 'etude'.
I think it is very hard to judge others without knowing anything about how the violin works. I have seen J. Heiftez, Geza Hosszu Legocky been badly criticized...everybody may have their own opinion about how something sounds but see what've been asked in Kreutzer before saying something!
this is an exercise though probably to be played at tip in response to comments below, he's got great bow mastery and tonality when he uses the whole bow
If you read Mr. Haslop's blog you will find that he is a progressive and thinking violinist--not stuck in what he learned 20 years ago but always trying out new ideas..he see's a ripple on the lake and somehow it applies to the violin or a method he is working on. Mr. Haslop is VERY well respected by his peers and has done something right. I don't always agree with his interpretation but I do know that he knows what he is talking about technique wise.
besides, he uses too little bow, leading to failure in sound quality. it's badly out of tune. out of all the videos, i have never seen him use whole bows, and i suspect he does not practice them. If there is a video of him performing whole bow related music, i can still guarantee that he does not play from frog to tip. Stern in his classes in beijing corrected a girl when she played beethoven's violin sonata 5 without using the rest of the bow, when she attempts to play the whole bow.
First of all, in an etude like this you wouldn't use a lot of bow, the notes are too quick. Second of all, perhaps you didn't know it is helpful to practice an etude like this in the various parts of the bow. It is not "usual" to be playing something like this at the tip, but he is getting a full tone. That's what makes it an etude! His intonation could be more accurate, but it's not "badly out of tune."

hey man, i know this might sound weird, but kreutzer made these caprices so you cold move your left arm out on the Higher strings, and it could help out your intonation and your trills.
I agree --great lightness, wonderful left hand facility. His bow arm, however, is far from superb. He manages very well, though, as he is obviously a naturally gifted violinist.
Localvideos, I agree with lua1971. It doesn't matter if he has better bow arm than the player. He could still be qualified to critique the video. It's like when you watch a movie - you might not have the acting skills of the actors, but you can still tell if the acting is good or bad.
He actually makes Kreutzer sound good!

shut up whoever gave me a bad comment view. if his elbow moved out, his trills would be cleaner.

i think his left hand is the same as milstein!

I never approached an etude this way. Maybe it will be more fun for me now.

agreed. i hate people that are ignorant enough to believe that you can only critique someone if you are at or above their level of skill.
