People should show their respect in their own way, a personal way with deeper and more profound effects. Why 2 minutes a year? (4 including the 11th). It should be encouraged to reflect upon our heroes as much as possible.

As for the charity, don't be inclined to contribute just because everyone else is, contribute when ever you like. Don't wear a poppy just because you are worried about oposing a social stigma.

Take humility in your contibutions.

Take a personal apoach to their remembrance.

Do we really need a 2 minute silence? It seems more and more that remembrance day has become a forum for egocentric celebrities to come on TV and say 'hey I've got compassion'. It goes without saying that being silent has no intrinsic value at all, the thing with value is the actual act of remembering our heroes, at that is the main point that should be put across. A memory is a personal response to the events, not some arbitary moment when we should all be quiet.

@ZenoKameno I kind of agree with you, although i do like the idea of the silence. I think that people growing up now will see it as something routine and just be silent because it's what is expected, withouth actually giving a thought those who have sacrificed themselves for us. The silence is a good way to show thanks and respect, so long as those giving thanks truely appreciate what it is they are thankful for. As for the celebs, i guess they are role models that will encourage their fans!?!

The Poppy doesn't just represent the truly heroic soldiers to have died for a just cause in WW2.

It also represents soldiers who have killed countless men, women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan, amongst other places,. These soldiers are not heroes. They ill people for a living and often risk making their young children orphans.

The military is almost always a fascist institution and it should not be glamorised or hero-worshipped.

Militaries and facism have always gone hand in hand.
