I actually understand Joanne. I mean, she is the boring one in the family and she knows it compared to her siblings so she has to put up a martyred front in front of everyone. Her parents can take care of themselves but unfortunately there is going to be a time that they aren't and Joann feels she is going to be the one who is going to be there. Her siblings don't always come home so she feels that it is all on her.She has to try to make things perfect and unfortunately it turned her into a harpy.
My mother loves this film, and she has witnessed in her children what's going on with the three kids in this film. Claudia and Tommy formed a group of their own, and they seem to have excluded Joanna; this happened with my youngest half-brother and half-sister teaming up against my eldest half-brother. I pity Joanna. But I also consider what Claudia said to Joanna's complaint, "I'm the only one doing anything around here" - "no one asked you to." In that way, she's like my aunt.
can anyone figure out why joana is so unhappy about her life? she has a loving husband, two children she loves (even though the daughter is spoiled rotten and acting younger than she is), decent life. so why is she so unhappy?
@AngelWingsVIII I think it is because her brother and sister left her to take care of their parents, while they have ( in her eyes ) their perfect, worry-free life.
@AngelWingsVIII Perhaps her life is not so perfect, because perhaps she didn't want to be a housewife. But she married a plain guy and she stayed to live in her native town, because she was the last child at home and her parents would have been alone. And it's not so easy to take care of your parents while they are growing old and faint, and you can't do anything to prevent it. And even if you thought they would have been always there for you, you understand day after day that they won't.
@bosie1984 i have definitely considered that to be why she's so unhappy. though maybe at first she thought she wanted to be a housewife and now she realizes that that's not what she really wants
@AngelWingsVIII She is the only one who did not (could not) get out of their home town, has the burden of having to watch over and take care of her parents (all alone), while her brother and sister are OK (and accepted) with a phone call here and there or a visit during the Holidays. Since they are not there most of the time, they are welcome home with fireworks. .. that probably hurts and worst of all there´s nothing she can do at this point in her life to change anything.
@martinl19 she chose to stay...they don't really need to be taken care of. She wants to play the martyr instead of admitting that she isn't that happy with the life she chose. It's sad, and too bad that she takes it out on everyone else instead of trying to make things better for herself.
@gzjones616 hmmm...perhaps you are right. I´m not sure though as to how much we choose in life and how much we are simply "meant to do" and cannot freely choose... Our own karma is hard to understand, let alone someone else´s...
I think the sister is annoying BUT Joana probably became that way because being vocal was the only way she could get attention compared to Claudia and Tommy
I hate the fact that even though Claudia and Tommy are my favorite characters, Joanna is the one I relate to the most. It's weird how the most 'ordinary' sibling is the odd one out, whereas the two siblings who's lifestyles are more bohemian and I guess, "out there", are the ones who have each other and thus their little clique.
@babmooks Brave of you to admit that you relate to Joanna´s character! I am very much like Claudia and Tommy and can´t stand personalities like Johanna´s. But at the same time I do feel deeply sorry for people like that. As shown in the movie, Johanna is incredibly miserable with her life. The thing is that both Tommy and Claudia (with whatever lifestyle they have) are not as judgemental as johanna is. That alone makes them much happier individuals and thus the "click" between them.
I think when Claudia says, "We don't have to like each other, Jo. We're family", that hurts Joanne a lot. But why?
