Saw this production at ENO and though it differed in places from Bernstein's recording it was excellent, funny, witty, disturbing and very faithful to the original concept of Candide which was written at the time of, and in response to the Macarthy witch-hunts in the U.S.A. A very exciting production which I will see again as soon as I can.
The original concept of Candide? Surely you mean the concept for the show. I don't know anything about whether it was related to the witch-hunts in that time in the U.S.A., but Voltaire wrote it hundreds of years before.
Yick. I really hate their pronunciation of "What a day." It's like they're saying "Whaddaday." And they cut way too much out. I prefer the 1989 version with the London Symphony.
Who knows how it's going to look and sound like at the ENO...
This is obviously a very important production to Carsen, and to plenty of other people as well. Still I wonder how he can manage a new "Poppea" at Glyndebourne and the "Candide" revival in London, with a completely new cast, and both at the same time.
Oh yes... everything IS for the best, indeed. Does anyone feel uncomfortable? I fu*kin' love this itchy witchy piece more and more!
I don't know if there are other scores that Bernstein actually made. This one was changed for this production by the director to update it to current topics.
Welll there is the original version from the 50s, along with a Broadway revival version.
Then NY City Opera adapted and expanded it- this version is done a lot now.
Bernstein helped revise it again for the Scottish Opera, and that version is done a lot as well.
I think there's a British version out there too.
For our production, we're using script and score from a couple different versions. I don't know if this one is done that way, or if its a whole other score that I don't know about!
Voltaire never mentioned the KKK being there, and it happened in Lisbon with is w/ the American flags?

What the fuck was that?! I've never seen Candide, but I love Bernstein. This song actually features the KKK. This is complete bullshit.

@guitarmy039 The whole point is they're saying whaddaday to evoke the american overtones of the number.

I saw this production in La Scala and if anything, it was even better. Do look for the ENO production coming up this year!
