They used officer candidates from my AOCS class (07-89) for the film because we were only a few days from graduating and weren't very busy at that point. It was fun for us because we were working with GYSGT Holt in a different way than we were used to--no real pressure, unlike the usual stress of AOCS. In fact, 07's actual drill sergeant was GYSGT F.X. Donahue, but the film crew decided to use Holt. Good choice--he really was that terrifying. Worse, actually, in real life.
I wish I had seen this before reporting to Pensacola in 1966. Come to think of it, it's probably better that I didn't. Might have scared me off. So glad I stuck it out. Flew heavy A3 aircraft off carriers and retired as a USAirways captain. It's been quite a life thanks to the US Navy.
This video is amazingly accurate. It was filmed less than a year after I graduated in Class 21-89. GYSGT Holt wasn’t my drill instructor, but he was our NCOIC (Battalion I Bulldogs). The video doesn’t even come close to capturing how “intense” he really was in real life. He definitely left an impression! LOL.
@RollWithMe247 You're dead on! But it was filmed in early 89! I was there... and I was in 13-89! It kept him busy for a few weeks. I think we were in week 7 or so when he finished and was back. Holt was INTENSE, yet you knew if you caught his wrath, it was earned. He was fair with his discipline, but it seemed to me he caught EVERYTHING! Only time I hurled in AOCS was during a personalized little one-on-one PT session with Holt in the Rose Garden!!! He left an impression for sure.
This is a damn well made video. For a bit of perspective, Marine OCS has roughly 20x the number of screaming hate-filled Sargent Instructros per company.
This was easier than Class 39-71, GYSGT J.F. Ogden USMC and LT T.J. Prall, USN, Class Officer. But, about 1/3 of us made it through. I retired in 1992 after flying Phantoms for most of my career. It was worth it!
