According to this article, OriHime is designed to act as an 'avatar` for human operators, who generally would be children confined to hospitals for treatment, so they could watch and interact with the people in their lives outside their hospital room. The intent behind the design was to create a robot avatar capable of a variety of nonverbal expressions/gestures.
