Clara died of a stroke. She along with Mahalia, Brother Joe May, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe all died between the years of 1972- 1973. All sang themselves to death w/out taking time for themselves.......
However, we will remember them for the pearls of great work they left for us to listen to which I cherish greatly!!!!!!
I'm probably wrong for saying this and if I am I don't care. I think that when Gertrude Ward died Clara might have felt a little bit relieved. She spent all her life listening to her mother's controlling mouth, while putting up with her manipulative ways and finally it was put to rest the day her mother died.
Clara Ward died on January 16, 1973. Gertrude Ward died in November of 1981. Unfortunately, as you can tell by the date, Clara died before her very own mother.
@Rowoches Amen!!! I am also a Clara Ward fan and I know the facts as well! Amen Rowoches!!! Clara may have been relieved when she went home herself to sit down with Jesus, that is true!
I agree with blessedover, I think Clara knew she was not going to live very much longer. She died from cardiac arrest I believe. If I can recall recall in her final days she was feeling weak her body.
You don't die until your heart stops, which is kinda like cardiac arrest. She passed from complications of a stroke, after being in a coma for a little while.
GLO-REEEEEEEEE. Eeeeeeeeeeeee! Git me a fan. Ahm bout to fall out lawd. Das good churchin right there. Jus wish Clara and Re coulda sung a little strain or two together recorded somewhere. I mean Ms Ward was at the Amazing Grace sessions. Too tasty ta think about. Re even performed How I Got Over on that album. Ah well... Praise be anyhoo.
This is powerful, but I love the studio version, when Shannon Williams sends the girls out, and has Clara sing three hymns: Last Mile of the Way, Beams of Heaven, and I Love The Name Jesus. I think a special anointing was there there session.
Very similer voice to Janis Joplin.

Rowoches, Clara breathed a sigh of relief from the bannister of heaven for us! LOL!
The studio version is unrivaled! She sounded tired in the LIVE version. "How long, how long, how long it will be."
