@jannovak911 Calling thujone a hallucinogenic is very obsolete 'science'... check your facts there; it's only a GABA-antagonist. It was even tested on people... most of them couldn't detect thujone in a glass of drink, even if the thujone content of a WHOLE bottle of pre-ban absinthe was mixed in....too bad, isn't it.
i've gotten away from drinking this stuff for a while but instead of talking about things like thujone levels... i would have to stress to any newcomers to drink it with the coldest temperature water possible. also, keep the absinthe bottle itself cold.
@PassingAutonomy I think some sugar will definitely stay at the bottom if you don't stir it up...no matter how slow you drip the water. I usually don't stir it up when I use sugar, since I don't like it too sweet.
@dExXxsAcReD Did you ever try the Song Vert? Slightly milder. I'm just wondering for a first time user which would be the best choice. Can this band be shipped to the US?
@Juberoos think it's the same destillerie. haven't tried Song Vert yet, but i like the bitter ones ;)
don't know, because there's a thujon limit in the U.S (10mg/kg). But I just heard from it. There should be a list of Absinth brands you can get there ;)
Here in Europe theres a thujon limit with 35mg/kg, maybe you should buy a bottle online... sry that i don't know good sites, i get my absinth from a online store here in germany ;)
If you want good absinthe, order some nice, traditional one under 10mg.
Quailty pre-ban absinthes existed with even as low as 0,5 mg/kg thujone content. Jade (U.S.) is usually regarded a GOOD absnthe by european absintheurs.
If you want thujone, drink wormwood tea or infuse wormwood in everclear.
@dExXxsAcReD You cannot know that:) All of the quality absinthes' thujone content is unknown. Mentioning it on the label or anywhere is a hallmark of inferior/imitation absinthe, and it's totally unsignificant anyway.
I liked Eichelberger (68 limitée or 80 brut, for example) the best so far. You may not like it, since real absinthe is different from most of the Czeh "variations" like L`éxtrait de fée absinth.
(Also, it's been proven that many of the alleged th. contents on labels are fake....)
@dExXxsAcReD You'd best use Wormwood Society's and feeverte.net's reviews, those 2 are professionals on absinthe:) Just Google them up.
Eichelberger is something like enhancing ouzo (or other anise spirits) with a complex herbal recipe, making it fully saturated with flavours (you can't feel the taste of alcohol at all), It's not bitter, since the "stronger" herbs are distilled.
The differences can be any. Modern fakes were made by people who never actually drank traditional absinthe.
I think i stay by my site, it's better when i understand something xD
but feeverte.net is a very good site, i got some more informations about absinthe ;)
The thing is that i haven't that much money to try different absinth brands, most of the time i drink them by a good friend of mine, but he lives 6 hrs away...
But all i can say is that I like the bitter absinthes more, tastes are different, even if them are not "traditional" ones.
But Czech absinths are just another style, not fakes
@dExXxsAcReD Well...it's okay if you like those better:) About "another style", no, since czeh absinth was made like "We don't know anything about absinthe, but it was made of wormwood somehow, so let's make some wormwood booze, then sell it as Extraordinarily Original Überabsinthe." That is definitely a fake. They are Wormwood Bitters and not absinthes. Vodka is closer to whisky than these two, seriously. If I'd sell yellow vodka labeled as whiskey, it would be a fake, I guess:)
So what would you call czeh absinth? i mean, i can't say to my friends "so, let's drink fake absinth" xD Maybe you'll understand ;) Just "Wormwood Bitters"?
@dExXxsAcReD :D well, the damage is done, the czeh thing will probably be called 'absinth' or 'czeh absinth' forever:) Wermutspirituose would do either, but i'd be hard to force that:D In my country, for example, brandy is always referred to as "cognac". There's no way to change it... :)
paul nathan (i hope his name is spelled like this) from absintheology calls the czech thing "czech style absinth", and when an expert says this, i think that should be okay ^^ but i won't forget it to call it CZECH STYLE absinth ^^
I'm drinking absinthe too right now. Already knew this vid. just came here for a lil nostalgia. ^^ And mine is homemade from real wormwood and God knows how high thujon level. XD

@Jcolinsol Thujone is an active ingredient in absinthe that will give you a hallucination, however there is none sold in the US with high enough thujone levels to give you one.
@Trent1080 No amount of thujone causes hallucinations. It's just an uneducated, ignorant misinterpretation of absinthism. Not to say absinthism itselv was fictituous, too. You can take the thujone content of a whole bottle of 1900's absinthe and you still won't notice anything. Already tested on human subjects.
love the accent on this guy i was stupid first time i had some absinthe straight into a shot glass and down ma throat tastes so much better doing it this way thank you
the idea of the louche is that it slowly releases the flavor and aromas in the absinthe. just dumping water and sugar in there is probably going to ruin the effect, although I'm not going to waste a glass of absinthe just to test the theory.
@thinkpad411 I agree. I haven't yet seen any green fairys, neither have I never been invited to the ocean by a mermaid. There's only the drunkness and your own imagination. The rest? I'd simply describe it by one word, hypochondria
The "Original Absinthe" from the 1800th century is nothing compared to the Absinthe you can get nowadays. A study has shown that a original recipe from 1899 has 4.3 mg/L thujone. Today you can get Absinthe with 111 Mg/L thujone, and 75.5% Alcohol (151 proof) (see the Zele Premium Absinthe).
So please drop that "Oooh, this Absinthe is by the original recipe, so this is the good shiat main!", and do some research ;)
Firstly, pre-ban absinthe still had high alcohol content, and indeed a bottle of pernod fils from 1910 is likely to be over 140 proof.
Secondly? only czech "absinths" (note the legally mandated misspelling) claim to have a thujone content above, maybe, 20 mg/l, and its been proven over and over again that the claims of thujone content are pure bullshit that any chemist worth their equipment can show you. If you have a bottle that claims to have 111 mg/l thujone, you were conned.
Indeed. Producers of fake absinthes (often from Eastern Europe but not always) invest so little in making their product, it's highly unlikely they'd spend the resources to accurately test the thujone level. Thujone is completely irrelevant to absinthe quality. Nor is it relevant to any subtle "secondary effects" one may or may not experience.
I never said that modern absinthes have less alcohol than preban, I was responding to another post saying that preban absinthe was "weak." Shit, I have a bottle of Meadow of Love here that's 68 proof. (I suggest you pick up a bottle of MoL, it may be in short supply but its easily one of the best absinthes being produced in the entire USA, and may be even better than some of the big-name french and swiss brands)
@IIStefan Dude you think USA that has like 2 years (MAX) of experience in the production of Absinthe, can beat Distillers who have been around 200 years? your so dumb and your patriotism wont work here.. U.S.A doesnt have the best absinthe, EUROPE has , and my estimations go to Czech Republik, they do have REAL ABSINTHES, not this gay american copy ass thing
ahaha you poor misguided little child. Here's a free bit of applied history for you: what the czech republic makes is not in any way absinthe. it is low-quality vodka that has had extracted anise and wormwood oils mixed in. This is like making bathtub brewed moonshine and saying it's London Gin.
Secondly, Absinthe has been banned in most of europe for most of a century. The only country that has had a continuous absinthe tradition is switzerland, and they don't make verte absinthe.
secondly, real absinthe has only been legal outside of Switzerland since 2000 in Europe. You say the US has no experience, well guess what? most modern European distillers aren't any more experienced than the US. By the way - before the ban, the US was a big distiller of absinthe as well.
The fact is, almost every distillery that makes verte absinthe is working off the same small group of pre-ban recipes, be they based in France, Spain, or the United States.
lastly, the United States has many areas excellently suited to growing high-quality anise, fennel, and wormwood - the three herbs essential to the creation of high quality absinthe. America has comparable experience, the proper resources, and every reason to be considered top-shelf absinthe producers.
Czech Absinthe's are widely regarded as the worst available. Usually they are a simple maceration of herbs in high proof alcohol, not an Absinthe at all.
The Swiss are well regarded, with their bootlegging tradition, and it was never banned in Spain and England, so those would be the countries to look toward for surviving recipes.
Nevertheless, good Absinthe does come out of the US. Patriotism has nothing to do with it, Distilling skills are not culturally or racially specific.
@Yojizu I haven't said that higher content of alcohol isn't possible. The Zele Premium was mentioned because of the high contain of thujone, wich is hard to find many other places.
Yeah i know that high thujone and alcohol content isn't what makes an absinthe good. Absinthe is often a taste-based drink, so to say. Some like it bitter, other sweet. And the stupid morons just use it to get faster drunk.
@taafraeser I read that original absinthe from real taste testers said that there were very few absinthes that weren't lousy. Nowadays absinthe is stronger and better tasting to boot.
@nalyib Quite so my friend. It saddens me to see people trying to one up each other with 'who has the strongest absinthe'. When people see it as simply a cool way to get really drunk, it's a terrible waste.
@taafraeser thujone levels have no bearing on absinthe's taste. you are seeking something this drink is not capable of delivering in any form short of the illegal. (which wouldnt be absinthe anymore.) the current czech crap you reference is NOT true absinthe. the name given is that of a "faux" absinthe. the reason older absinthe (pre ban 1910) is sought after is because the mystery of how its made well was lost due to 96 years of abolition due to demonizing by the wine industry. read stoopid.

it doesnt make a dizzying high nemore i dont think, its cause in the 70's the companies used a hallucenagenic plant to make a more green colour in the drink and provide a different experience. That was legal bak then.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no your thinking of copper sulfate, a dyeing agent that caused the green illumination, but it made people extremely sick because its toxic as hell. you sure does still give you a pot-like high from the wormwood. if you look at the molecular structure of wormwood and compare it to THC theyre almost identical. pot does cause a minor like psychedelic inebriation for sure, so yeah im sure wormwood is probably lightly psychedelic. you wont get visuals or anything like from real psychedelics tho.
thuljone, or W/e its calleds is the extract of wormwood that effects ur brain. it increases synapsis ... so it increases perception, not distorting it. and um, yeh, wat i said b4 was wrong, read into it.
I saw this on the Discovery channel they were saying how it was so much more powerful then other alcohol and it would make you hallucinate. I bought a fifth w Van Gough on it , if you think your going to get some lsd like effect don't waste your time it was a pretty good alcohol buzz and tasted pretty good straight better then cheap liquor for sure but I can't say I was blown out of mind like I saw on the documentary.
yeh its bullsh1t... wat they said..........no such thing as an lsd effect. tho im pretty sure anything at 80% alchohol will fck u up. (hence y the essential oils in it are water soluble, ITS MEANT TO BE MIXED WITH WATER)
the whole sugar thing only came about because of bad absinthe, the sugar was to cover the bitter taste.good absinthe doesnt need added sugar, also the myth of having visions and hallucinations,is what i said, a myth.
If you like absinthe without sugar, that's great, but don't say that good absinthe doesn't need sugar. It's like coffee, sugar is a matter of preference, no matter what Lance Winters says.
@heavyharpoon23 - Yes, sugar is a matter of personal preference, however it is indisputable that the addition of sugar to some of the finer absinths will mask and completely overshadow many of the botanical nuance which is really ultimately what you drink it for. Sugar on the plus side can offer a slightly fuller body.
As far as the comparison to coffee, I don't think that is truly a fair one, but I take my coffee black also. If you like it, that's fine, but good absinthe does not NEED sugar.
no it's probably not, you will pay mostely for the brand and flavour not for the effects, the basic ingredients are all the same so the effects are allmost the same.
i paid 113 usa dollars for a bottle of what apeard to be a good absinthe from ALANDIA. when i got it the label said abisinthe and was such a light soft green it was rediculous. CAN WE SAY RIPPED OFF
Which one was it though? The color of the absinthe varies from brand to brand. Usually if the color is lighter, it means that the distiller didn't want the coloring herbs to overshadow the distilled ones. If you want a good absinthe that has a very bright, natural green, try Duplais Verte.
Le rituel de feux, d´aprés lequel on inflamme le sucre au dessus de l´absinthe n´est pas une methode traditionelle francaise. C´est une méthode qui a été dévelopé par quelques destilleries bohemes dans les années 80 du siècle dernier.
This is the only genuine Absinthe preparing ritual. It dates back from the early 1800's.
Setting your absinthe on fire is just stupid because you would ruin the taste, unless you drink low grade stuff bought in spain or east europe then it deserves to get burned.
Fuck this shit give me a pabst and a cheeseburger

i found this on wikipedia:
Regarding importation of absinthe, U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows importation of absinthe products subject to the following restrictions:
-The product must be thujone-free as described above,
-The name "absinthe" can neither be the brand name nor stand alone on the label, and
-The packaging cannot "project images of hallucinogenic, psychotropic or mind-altering effects."
So I think that it's very hard to get a good absinth in the states..

I believe that to be an urban legend. Thujone is a convulsant, not a hallucinogen, according to the chemical analysis that I've read.
Moreover, the amount of thujone in Absinthe is so small that you would die of alcohol poisoning before ever feeling the effects of thujone.
If you want a high dose of thujone, you'd get more out of a meal cooked with sage than by drinking Absinthe.

Effects between that of weed and alcohol? Ah no, it's much the same as any other alcohol...

@thinkpad411 I agree. I haven't yet seen any green fairys, neither have I never been invited to the ocean by a mermaid. There's only the drunkness and your own imagination. The rest? I'd simply describe it by one word, hypochondria

an alcoholic beverage made with the wormwood plant, with effects between that of weed and alcohol.

-I've done mine :)
taafraeser 2 years ago 6
two things.
IlStefan 2 years ago 2
@IlStefan
GreeenBaron 2 years ago
@IlStefan I bought a bottle of Absinthe yesterday that was 89.9 percent alcohol, just under 180 proof. It's not pre ban.
proudtoserve1 2 years ago
I never said that modern absinthes have less alcohol than preban, I was responding to another post saying that preban absinthe was "weak." Shit, I have a bottle of Meadow of Love here that's 68 proof. (I suggest you pick up a bottle of MoL, it may be in short supply but its easily one of the best absinthes being produced in the entire USA, and may be even better than some of the big-name french and swiss brands)
IlStefan 2 years ago
@IIStefan Dude you think USA that has like 2 years (MAX) of experience in the production of Absinthe, can beat Distillers who have been around 200 years? your so dumb and your patriotism wont work here.. U.S.A doesnt have the best absinthe, EUROPE has , and my estimations go to Czech Republik, they do have REAL ABSINTHES, not this gay american copy ass thing
420sensi 2 years ago
ahaha you poor misguided little child.
IlStefan 2 years ago
get a life, u need to get out more and stop arguing about feking absinthe onyoutube and FYI it isn't banned in th UK
philefc86 1 year ago
secondly, real absinthe has only been legal outside of Switzerland since 2000 in Europe.
IlStefan 2 years ago
lastly, the United States has many areas excellently suited to growing high-quality anise, fennel, and wormwood - the three herbs essential to the creation of high quality absinthe. America has comparable experience, the proper resources, and every reason to be considered top-shelf absinthe producers.
Patriotism doesn't enter into it. Facts do.
IlStefan 2 years ago 2
Czech Absinthe's are widely regarded as the worst available. Usually they are a simple maceration of herbs in high proof alcohol, not an Absinthe at all.
The Swiss are well regarded, with their bootlegging tradition, and it was never banned in Spain and England, so those would be the countries to look toward for surviving recipes.
Nevertheless, good Absinthe does come out of the US. Patriotism has nothing to do with it, Distilling skills are not culturally or racially specific.
Jcolinsol 1 year ago
@taafraeser I got a 180 proof absinthe (89,9%).
Called hapsburg premium reserve
not sure how much thujone is on it, but I heard the one with the highest thujone concentration is the black amere absinthe, also from hapsburg.
XJ0SWORDSMASTER 1 year ago
@taafraeser 75.5%? I have a bottle next to me right now which is 89.9%. Yellow Hapsburg
Yojizu 1 year ago
@Yojizu I haven't said that higher content of alcohol isn't possible. The Zele Premium was mentioned because of the high contain of thujone, wich is hard to find many other places.
Yeah i know that high thujone and alcohol content isn't what makes an absinthe good. Absinthe is often a taste-based drink, so to say. Some like it bitter, other sweet. And the stupid morons just use it to get faster drunk.
taafraeser 1 year ago
@taafraeser I read that original absinthe from real taste testers said that there were very few absinthes that weren't lousy. Nowadays absinthe is stronger and better tasting to boot.
necronomicon009 1 year ago
@taafraeser More thujone and higher alcohol content does not necessarily make a better absinthe.
pedro898 1 year ago
@pedro898 What's more, one of the world's best absinthes is 50% strong and has less than 10mg of thujone.
nalyib 1 year ago
@nalyib Quite so my friend. It saddens me to see people trying to one up each other with 'who has the strongest absinthe'. When people see it as simply a cool way to get really drunk, it's a terrible waste.
pedro898 1 year ago

That was legal bak then.

no your thinking of copper sulfate, a dyeing agent that caused the green illumination, but it made people extremely sick because its toxic as hell. you sure does still give you a pot-like high from the wormwood. if you look at the molecular structure of wormwood and compare it to THC theyre almost identical. pot does cause a minor like psychedelic inebriation for sure, so yeah im sure wormwood is probably lightly psychedelic. you wont get visuals or anything like from real psychedelics tho.
TangerineGroovin 2 years ago
thuljone, or W/e its calleds is the extract of wormwood that effects ur brain. it increases synapsis ... so it increases perception, not distorting it. and um, yeh, wat i said b4 was wrong, read into it.

I saw this on the Discovery channel they were saying how it was so much more powerful then other alcohol and it would make you hallucinate. I bought a fifth w Van Gough on it , if you think your going to get some lsd like effect don't waste your time it was a pretty good alcohol buzz and tasted pretty good straight better then cheap liquor for sure but I can't say I was blown out of mind like I saw on the documentary.
pkpaulkersey 2 years ago
yeh its bullsh1t... wat they said..........no such thing as an lsd effect. tho im pretty sure anything at 80% alchohol will fck u up. (hence y the essential oils in it are water soluble, ITS MEANT TO BE MIXED WITH WATER)

803brando 2 years ago 3
the whole sugar thing only came about because of bad absinthe, the sugar was to cover the bitter taste.good absinthe doesnt need added sugar, also the myth of having visions and hallucinations,is what i said, a myth.
kevin600rr 2 years ago
If you like absinthe without sugar, that's great, but don't say that good absinthe doesn't need sugar. It's like coffee, sugar is a matter of preference, no matter what Lance Winters says.
heavyharpoon23 2 years ago 21
@heavyharpoon23 - Yes, sugar is a matter of personal preference, however it is indisputable that the addition of sugar to some of the finer absinths will mask and completely overshadow many of the botanical nuance which is really ultimately what you drink it for. Sugar on the plus side can offer a slightly fuller body.
As far as the comparison to coffee, I don't think that is truly a fair one, but I take my coffee black also. If you like it, that's fine, but good absinthe does not NEED sugar.

southerncrane100 2 years ago
Which one was it though? The color of the absinthe varies from brand to brand. Usually if the color is lighter, it means that the distiller didn't want the coloring herbs to overshadow the distilled ones. If you want a good absinthe that has a very bright, natural green, try Duplais Verte.

comebackrediscount 2 years ago
Le rituel de feux, d´aprés lequel on inflamme le sucre au dessus de l´absinthe n´est pas une methode traditionelle francaise. C´est une méthode qui a été dévelopé par quelques destilleries bohemes dans les années 80 du siècle dernier.
NordischesWesen 2 years ago
This is the only genuine Absinthe preparing ritual. It dates back from the early 1800's.
Setting your absinthe on fire is just stupid because you would ruin the taste, unless you drink low grade stuff bought in spain or east europe then it deserves to get burned.
