I saw this with Michael Cahill and Glyn Kerslake as Martin and Arnaud and thought it was fantastic. I coudln't understand why this didn't take off either as there is some lovely music in it and the staging was awesome with that HUGE movible set.
I saw the original west end production directed i think by declen donnelan. It was a brilliant production, the music was fantastic. I could never understand why this musical never really caught the imagination of the public
i saw the original show back in 1996 wow what a show the music was up;ifting, heartbreaking beautiful , brilliant , can't understand why they changed it superb score !!
I saw it in a "pre Broadway" run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC about ten years ago. I absolutely loved it, but it looks like it pretty much died after that. It's a shame, because it had some gorgeous songs.
@muffyduffy Glad you saw the pre-Broadway trials. I never did, although I've seen a couple videos of it and also own the CD. I did see, twice, the original London production which I just ADORED. I believe your would have loved it too. When comparing both CD's it is clear they changes the lyrics tremendously which, in my opinion, makes the latter one kind of hard to follow the story line. In any case, enjoy the FEW videos that exist of the original London cast. CHEERS !
French composers Boublil and Schonberg (the guys who did the famous musical version of Les Miserables). Martin Guerre was a French peasant in the 16th century who found himself at the center of a very bizarre story that eventually led in the execution of a man.
I didn't know this existed until a few weeks ago...we watched the "Martin Guerre" bit in my film class...shame they never brought it to America. I think it's kind of catchy.
I hate you haha. I love Martin Guerre and got to see it at the watermill in a revival in an amazing 12 person performance (actors and orchestra), but I would have loved to see the West End version.
I loved this show. I never understood why it closed. I love the rich orchestrations & incredible acting. Iain Glen, wow. This cast possessed a palpable chemistry that does not often happen. I think some of their problems came when they started using singers who act & not actors who sing as in the OLC. There's a huge difference.
This show was amazing I was gutted when it closed. The remake was good but in a much more paired down way. In it's own way for me this is as spectacular as Miss Siagon or Les Miserables and the musical intensity/drama I believe is equal to Miss Siagon. This one takes a bit more work to get inside but when your there you don't want to leave.
I didn't feel that the score was as strong as Les Mis or Miss Saigon. the title track and "Tell Me to Go" were highlights but apart from those the soundtrack was a disappointment by Boublil and Schoenberg's high standards..
James corden was in this

Aww great to see Matt on here! I went to Drama School with him. He was amazing then and he's amazing now - plus a really nice guy to go with it.
