Because Vivian Vance wanted to spend more time with her husband, John Dodds, at home in Connecticut (she'd been commuting, East to West, to appear regularly). Finally, during season theee, she asked to be "written out" of several episodes in order to spend more time back East. Then, Viv tried to negotiate "more power" {i.e., directing several episodes} in order to return for a fourth season...but SHE knew there was room for only one "boss" on the set. When Lucy refused, Vivian left the show.

This is the 1964-'65 opening title, minus the "Co-Starring VIVIAN VANCE" credit, because "Viv" wasn't in this episode. First time I've seen this in years!!!
