Saw this film at the Valhalla mid nineties. It was pretty awful to watch but banned again? Really? Honestly, I found Hostel way more disturbing. I have to wonder also, if this film is banned then why aren't the works of the Marquis De Sade? Is it just because less people read? Besides, the Director was shot wasn't he? If that's a fair price to pay for making a god awful film then half of Hollywood should be dead.
@UltimateTibu Don't bother. Read 120 days of Sodom. Good luck getting through it. Or just eat a large meal, watch some soft porn and get someone to punch you in the stomach until you vomit. You'll get the same result.
I just saw this film for the first time and did not find it all that shocking as a lot of the action is pretty unconvincing, the acting isn't very good, and the fake penises are funny. I did look away a few times, but it definitely didn't disturb me in the way a movie like Haneke's Funny Games, or even Man Bites Dog did. It looks very stylish though, and the amount of debate it generates is impressive. This comments page has been busy for over three years!!

I think that is sad, people justifying the horror of the movie by saying that just the 'inteligent' people undertand the beauty of it. just because you can't understand something it doesn't make it a brilliant piece of arte, but can totally mean that's a piece of shit. and that's what this movie is a PIECE OF SHIT, this and the Human Centopede and all the rest of this kind of movie. it's a porn for sick and highly pretentious people. it's sick how people spend money on this when kids are starvin
@SrtaCruz I wouldnt go that far, but it does piss me off when I say a film is sick (like this), and somehow that makes me...what, close minded? No, it means I have sensativity, and thats not a bad thing.
@Dolphidood well, Arts is NOT just an expression of Idea. a Political speech is not art, two people arguing is not art... so on so forth. Ideas everybody has and they express it all day long 24/7 in the world and it does not make all of us artists. Art IS a satisfactory combination of content and form. the form, the craft holding the content, the sign to be read, full of meaning, representing something in the world, some idea, some enlightment. thus IN MY OPNION this move does neither.

It is sad that so many people of limited intelligence can't make any distinction between real life and what they see on a cinema screen. That is why so many people of limited intelligence also believe whole-heartedly in that ancient, Bronze Age work of fiction, The Bible.
They show this movie regularly for anyone to watch here on the Rialto channel in New Zealand, naturally in late night/early morning time slots.... but still, great to see objectionable cinema such as this readily available to the open minded public here in NZ.
How could anyone sit through this film and NOT immediately digest De Sade??! Some folks should stick to what they know, the painfully obvious I guess, forgive my hogging the mike , emo makes me want to PUKE btw
this movie is not for any wilting violets, but the plot follows a purposeful direction which can't be said for MOST current "art cinime'',compared to Jackass this is the equivalent of Matisse for chrissakes! If you are such a wetblanket that you must drape yourself whining about something that is INTENED to shock viewers, you better stay in after the sun sets. It's a wild world out there ladies!
Lol I can't imagine reading the script for this movie.....
"okay.... men dressing up like women.... crawling around naked with only a dog collar and a leash.... forced to engage in homosexual activity..... and..... oh I would be in a scene where I have to eat shit..... alright.... hmmm..... I'll do it!"
@94jg The movie was inspired of a book called "The 120 days of Sodom" by Marquis de Sade. Sadomasochism comes from his name. So yeah if you want to see kind of like a script or a literary version, read the book (it's more shocking than the movie)
It's cannibal holocaust with added pretentiousness, it's not art. It's just shock value cinema, ignorant masses, really? To "experts" in art, you're part of them too! So stop whining and just agree that a message that is half made up by the audience does not make a bad film better.
this is the most studied film of all time it is banned in many countries....sorta like faces of death was for a long time to but this film is one of the most talked about and yes it is quit a shocker once u see it u might throw up it knocks two girls and one cup rite out of their slot....a reccomend not eating anything while watching this film lol
First saw this when I was 18 , high as hell on lsd, and LOVED it. Over the years I have used it to filter out people that I meet to determine if it is worth getting to know them, those who dont like it and get upset I waste no further time with!!! IF you dont like this film, dont watch it. Stick to the obvious, maybe go watch a superhero film, or somthing like Star Wars. Definitely stay away from anything cerebral...
@errantknave I like superhero movies and star wars but I also like movies like salo, cannibal holocaust, and eraserhead. What, is it impossible to like more than one type of cinema?
Film gives the depraved license to kinda live out their perverse fantasies with impunity and tabled their warped perceptions of society and human interaction -- it's wrong.
...But it makes for some entertaining viewing! =D
Pretentious torture porn is almost as pathetic as the sad people who puff their chests out and trawl through the shit to find some tiny meaning in it so they can pretend that its art and that the detractors are somehow too scared and moronic to get it, get to fuck you delicate pansies with delusions of knowledge
@Glassandcandy cheers i didnt know that was rated up. I never said Salo was bizarre or obscure in any way and I can tell you are not Irish and well read, to be refrencing James Joyce you should get your spelling right.
Absolute crap. Anyone who thinks this is art or wants to pass this as an insight to _____ of _____ can go get gang banged by 40 yr old men and forced to eat feces.
I must have seen it four times between ages 18-24. Took my girlfreind to see it.
At first I was onlyy into shick value, like it was a jhn waters, Andy Warhol or grindhose flasher movie. But gradualy the ideas did start to penetrate my mind. I would like to see it again now that I'm older. I also read the Sade book, which was much more grusome, but also poorly written and reletivly shallow philosphicaly (though it tries to be). This is the rare movie that is better than the source material.
Iread somewhere on the net, someone actually vomited watching this film, and for that reason, its an "important work" My ARSE!! I could probably make him sick by rubbing excrement everywhere in front of him, taping it at the same time, would that be 'an important work?' No, of course. Look, its really easy to make something like this. Its easy to break moral codes/society standards, pig easy. This is Not frigging art. Or at least, if one has to strain to think of it as such, its not GOOD art
i've read the a book about marquis de sade and 120 days of sodom. if any movie gives any resemblance to that then i bow down to that one hell of a movie because youre gonna see some shit eating, piss drinking, virgin rapes, cock and ball tortures, yes boys are not left alone. yeah those freakin fascists love their girl-faced boys.
I got to about the part where that guy got to eating the ass of the guy fucking the newlyweds and called it quits!! Horrible movie, I don't care what the point was about this movie!!
I have no problem with people not wanting to see the movie, that's fine. I have a problem with people judging other people who choose to see the movie or people who push their moral beliefs on others and would limit books, music or movies other people have access to.
This movie disgusts you or you don't like it, fine.. But why are you here? If you think strangers on the internet want to hear what you don't like stop wasting your time and go eat some shit.
i watched this movie yesterday and its really a stupid and boring movie, oh well it was a cheap dvd. I did laugh though when there was a gangbang in the beginning(in the diner room a guy fucked a girl from behind and a other guy fucked the guy from behind)
@dariosimic5 A cheap dvd my fucking ass. On Amazon the cheapest one is 80 dollars and the collector version is over 400. Either you are full of shit or need to tell me where you bought it for cheap lol.
@Snortemup you can find the criterion version of this film on ebay for less than 40 dollars. it is accompanied by a book with selected critical essays on the piece, as well as a bonus disc with a few short documentaries. fantastic purchase for the price; it is really worth seeing
you all know that marquis desade who wrote the novel wrote it like this in a way to provoke the reaction you're giving. dead for many years but still he makes you all act like chicks on the rag
@HeathenLoveGod People that watch this kind of stuff, especially more than once, aren't doing so because of the 'social commentary', to state otherwise, is to be 'full of shit'. People watch this stuff because they enjoy watching the suffering of others, fake as it may be. And they (possibly you) should just admit that.
@HeathenLoveGod So you're saying that anyone who disliked this movie is stupid? I understood everything the director was trying to do, everything he was trying to get across with society's dark side of sexuality, and I think he executed it efficiently, obviously. But I also personally disliked the movie.
@HeathenLoveGod This isn't art you moron. Aside from the shock value, this movie is poorly made. The lighting is bad, the editing is horrible, the cinematography sucks, and the writing is bad.
@gabba1gabba1hey : "Some indie guy"? Are you stupid? Pasolini is one of the most famous Italian directors and poets of the C20th. You need to get educated.
@HeathenLoveGod i need to "get educated" because i don't know about some random nobody who made some shitty movie, with no redeming features other than being risque and "shocking". please.
i saw the movie, it was fucking awful in just about every feasible aspect.
People need to fucking realize its a fucking move a MOOOVIIEEE. its just shocking entertainment, who said everytime you make a movie you should try to tell a story, something you should just make a movie to disgust the shit out of your audience for fun. thats what makes salo so great not the story just what its does to your insides, its quite the experience if you ask me.
so stop bitching, watch the movie, and remember the shit was chocolate and orange marmalade and nobody died. PUSSIES
@LordVonRembrandt Yeah Its hard to watch, but thats the whole point. Its shock value.
I think its great becuase theres hardly no blood or guts, and to be able to pull something like this off, to me is just amazing. most of the entire movie is dialogue with little bits of shock mixed in, perfectly to make a person feel sick. I'm bad at writing, but you should get what I'm trying to say.
@RespectMyHate & My nigga dont be walkin around calling people pussies either, you needa correct dat shit vete mucho ala chingada estupido mas puto weyyy
Sorry to ruin it, but the shit was made from the finest swiss chocolate mixed with orange marmalade. (Check out the British Film Institute's excellent book on the film). It wasn't a snuff film. Passolini was murdered by some hustler after the film was made, though it had nothing to do with "Salo." Passolini lived his life on the edge. He also happened to make extraordinary films. This isn't a film for everyone - agreed! It's not even one his best, but it sure inflames people's passions.
@pacific707 It's possible that his death was related to the film. The co-writer of Salo stated there might have been stolen reels of film of the movie that Pier was going to retrieve in a meeting. The alleged killer also admitted there were three other men who killed him referring to him as a communist. It most likely was due to his political views though. His death definitely wasn't just random I'll tell you that.
This is a very dark film with strong artistic merit but I'm not sure if it has high replay value. The ending though really sticks with you and perfectly wraps up the film.
Perhaps. But it could just be a porno covered up as an art film. Iv seen it many times and I have come to the conclusion its not as 'deep' as people say it is.
@Gmancrap wow do you even know what porno is? Salo is not porno, Pasolini was explaining how perfectly capable individuals are capable of atrocious acts and we see it happen all the time throughout history. The music gives it an almost sardonic look at life and the horror is very deep.
Where did the "music" part come from? That was really random. Any how, yes I know what a porno is. And yes I know that the movie was symbolic of fascist Italy during the 40's.
But some of the sex scenes and human feces scenes were simply not necessary to get the point across (In my opinion) and I felt they were only there for perhaps, arousal or shock value.
Possible the most complex film of all time, in its acting like in its scenario and its screenplay. A must for any art, film, history or philosophy student...
That is where, it will be said that it snares the viewer; a feeling of helplessness and a cry of outrage; instead of being a vehicle of indulged opinion's..there are my arguments'; think of it what you will...at least I try not ram my opinions down other peoples neck's
May I suggest that you watch "Gomorrah" which is based on the real-life ,modern day Italian mafia; the man who wrote it, -is under police protection for life because of his novel reveals that the Camorra in Naples use children to peddle dope and become "guinea pigs" for dirty deeds.I find this has closer contrasts towards "Salo" , because it refers to high ranking "officials" being some of the most corrupt and it is treated as everyday workings, and no one can do anything ...
Let's be honest. I can easily tolerate abuse, torture, etc., but this film really struck me as ridiculous. Making an allegorical point is one thing, but Salo took that basic concept to an unproductive extreme. Try American Psycho. It covers many of the same themes, satirically speaking, and is a much more enjoyable film. And don't get me wrong, the graphic nature of Salo was not particularly off-putting, it was the sloppy and heavy-handed nature of the film that I found weak and pedestrian.
@fishman017 no wonder u must be an american.....american psycho.....pfffffff c'mon thats one of the most ridiculous comparisons to date...hahaha, am gonna puke
@neyikenhai So you require visuals of children eating feces and being raped in order to comprehend and appreciate a satirical point? Honestly, we should be developed to the point that, as a global society, we can enjoy satire without resorting to ridiculous extremes. And like I said before, it's not the profanity of Salo that I find ludicrous, it's the amateurish production value and obtuse satirical allusions. Lets approach satire with a little more responsibility and credibility, shall we.
I'm sick to death (no pun intended) of people watching things like this, awful things that reach borders than making it ridiculous, and saying there is some deep meaning. There isn't, it's just to market it. You don't need to have children eat feces on a film for it to be satirical.
Truly satirical films are far, far cleverer than this.
I like how this film completely contradicts fascist doctrine, becase as we all know mussolini and hitler and the estada nova were very forgiving of homosexuality and pedohphilia, it made more sense with de Sade
You poor fool. Passolini should be exhaulted for having enough balls to produce something real and raw, unlike the condensed hollywood bulshit im sure you're used to. This is art. Art is sometimes hard to watch or stomach, but if it disgusts you and disturbs you and stirs you....that's something more powerful than any 'movie'. This reaches out.
@tHeWasTeDYouTh I agree the film is art but the film does have meaning.People think of it as a disgusting and disturbing film but actually has a point.
You may be right, but nowadays every second film made today is classed as having some kind of "artistic merit" no matter how underserving or relevent it may be; it goes both ways chino, a piece of perverted filth by some or a relevant, way ahead of it's time statement of society.
No the film doesn't appeal to me, but doesn't mean I will condone it- it appeals to you?? so be it
you sound like a powser who is riding the " let's make a statement showpony" ..suit y'self...clown
More balls than Larry Clark's: Kids?, Man bites Dog?, Ninja Scroll? Gomorrah? A Clockwork Orange? Natrual Born Killers? Faces of Death? Jungle Book? What then...??
To be quite frank with you "KaczynskiNigga" I have not watched a ; how you so intelligently put it "commercial" film in over a year; it is monotone and I am (nowadays) picky in that respect......art is open to interpretation so refer to previous statement
By the way , I find "Taxi Driver" a profound and moving film still....Martian Scorsese actually advocated the rights to liftf the ban on "Salo" , he remains to this day one of my faviroute film makers or is that too " bullshit" for you ?
Otherwise, if I saw you in the street and you spoke to me I would shake you hand a reply " You sir, congrats--for speaking out and I commend you"
@Smallmaxx Rather than showing how low fascists can sink or people in general can sink I believe Salo shows how low filmmakers can sink. I only wish Pasolini had been beaten to death before he made this piece of garbage
I'm still debating on if I should watch this movie or not.
Sad thing is people got so rich, so bored, so corrupt, they did whatever they wanted without moral values. If you think a famous rapper did a crime because he's bored is the worse; these people are the true evil people. Lol.
@ArtilleryTurtle Take my advice and don't watch this outrage. Unless you enjoy human beings eating shit and young girls and boys being tortured to death pass on this piece of trash.
I felt a bit ashamed of myself after watching this film. hehe
Well, i can´t deny it is a good and pretty realistic movie and it probably shows pretty much what real facism was about in those days but it is such a depraved movie really. I can recomend it but only to those who know they can watch pretty sick things
Okay. Historically there was a reason that this film was important no matter what the film buffs say. This sadism, bullying and rape happened FOR real. It was about how fascism and absolute power corrupts absolutely. My family were from near the Republic . It annoys me that the 'work' was about saving lives and showing passionately how lives were destroyed. It's important we don't forget how cruel people are to each other especially over idealogical grounds. Fight Fascism. Love your brother.x
Pasolini wasnt just trying to be weird, this film is based on the book The 120 Days of Sodom by the infamous French writer and nobleman Marquis de Sade in 1785. It's actually pretty interesting, Sade wrote The 120 Days of Sodom in the space of thirty-seven days in 1785 while he was imprisoned in the Bastille. Being short of writing materials and fearing confiscation, he wrote it in tiny writing on a continuous, twelve-metre long roll of paper and it was unpublished until the twentieth century.
@pickpocketparty Have you ever tried reading Justine by Sade? I thought I could read anything but I only got about two thirds of the way through it. Okay, I kept thinking, you've made your point! The clergy and the aristocracy were cruel, vile people and they abused many young women and girls but do I have to keep reading one nauseating description of fiendish sexual violence after another? Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to execute de Sade after he read some of Justine, but was talked out of it.
I see this movie just like I see Charles Manson. Most think Charles Manson is some smart, unique, misunderstood character. (aside from murder) This movie is not really unique. I think it was made just for the shock factor. It's more common nowadays to see a movie like this. Most horror movies made in Italy were very graphic back then as well. It's one of those movies that would burn a hole in your soul too. Read it on Wikipedia...eww. :/
stupit idiot people, you're quite far away from understanding the real meaning of this movie... Pasolini is not for short minded and zero learned guys, he was one of the greatest intellecual of the past 50 years, why you've to compare Kubrick (another genius) with him, i don't get the point
FAIL. Boring. Strange doesn't equal entertainment. This film is HIGHLY over-rated and is pretty much only enjoyed by film snobs who have been told it's awesome.
so is the acting real lke all the cuting?

I don't have to be intelligent to appreciate it. Its called and opinion and everyone is entitled to one.
I appreciate many different forms of art and it wouldn't make a difference as to my 'intelligence' whether I didn't.
So you keep on following them stereotypes, telling people what they should appreciate and best of all all in the name of 'open mindedness'.

this movie is not for any wilting violets, but the plot follows a purposeful direction which can't be said for MOST current "art cinime'',compared to Jackass this is the equivalent of Matisse for chrissakes! If you are such a wetblanket that you must drape yourself whining about something that is INTENED to shock viewers, you better stay in after the sun sets. It's a wild world out there ladies!
errantknave 6 months ago
Lol I can't imagine reading the script for this movie.....
"okay.... men dressing up like women.... crawling around naked with only a dog collar and a leash.... forced to engage in homosexual activity..... and..... oh I would be in a scene where I have to eat shit..... alright.... hmmm..... I'll do it!"
94jg 6 months ago
@94jg The movie was inspired of a book called "The 120 days of Sodom" by Marquis de Sade. Sadomasochism comes from his name. So yeah if you want to see kind of like a script or a literary version, read the book (it's more shocking than the movie)
XxXLordPeinXxX666 5 months ago
It's cannibal holocaust with added pretentiousness, it's not art. It's just shock value cinema, ignorant masses, really? To "experts" in art, you're part of them too! So stop whining and just agree that a message that is half made up by the audience does not make a bad film better.

It's not even one his best, but it sure inflames people's passions.
pacific707 11 months ago
@pacific707 It's possible that his death was related to the film. The co-writer of Salo stated there might have been stolen reels of film of the movie that Pier was going to retrieve in a meeting. The alleged killer also admitted there were three other men who killed him referring to him as a communist. It most likely was due to his political views though. His death definitely wasn't just random I'll tell you that.

aruiz90 1 year ago
Perhaps. But it could just be a porno covered up as an art film. Iv seen it many times and I have come to the conclusion its not as 'deep' as people say it is.
Gmancrap 11 months ago
@Gmancrap wow do you even know what porno is? Salo is not porno, Pasolini was explaining how perfectly capable individuals are capable of atrocious acts and we see it happen all the time throughout history. The music gives it an almost sardonic look at life and the horror is very deep.
aruiz90 11 months ago
Where did the "music" part come from? That was really random. Any how, yes I know what a porno is. And yes I know that the movie was symbolic of fascist Italy during the 40's.
But some of the sex scenes and human feces scenes were simply not necessary to get the point across (In my opinion) and I felt they were only there for perhaps, arousal or shock value.

Smallmaxx 1 year ago
@KaczynskiNigga
Smallmaxx 1 year ago
Let's be honest. I can easily tolerate abuse, torture, etc., but this film really struck me as ridiculous. Making an allegorical point is one thing, but Salo took that basic concept to an unproductive extreme. Try American Psycho. It covers many of the same themes, satirically speaking, and is a much more enjoyable film. And don't get me wrong, the graphic nature of Salo was not particularly off-putting, it was the sloppy and heavy-handed nature of the film that I found weak and pedestrian.
fishman017 1 year ago
@fishman017 no wonder u must be an american.....american psycho.....pfffffff c'mon thats one of the most ridiculous comparisons to date...hahaha, am gonna puke
neyikenhai 1 year ago
@neyikenhai So you require visuals of children eating feces and being raped in order to comprehend and appreciate a satirical point? Honestly, we should be developed to the point that, as a global society, we can enjoy satire without resorting to ridiculous extremes. And like I said before, it's not the profanity of Salo that I find ludicrous, it's the amateurish production value and obtuse satirical allusions. Lets approach satire with a little more responsibility and credibility, shall we.
fishman017 1 year ago
@fishman017 I agree with you.

You may be right, but nowadays every second film made today is classed as having some kind of "artistic merit" no matter how underserving or relevent it may be; it goes both ways chino, a piece of perverted filth by some or a relevant, way ahead of it's time statement of society.
No the film doesn't appeal to me, but doesn't mean I will condone it- it appeals to you?? so be it

To be quite frank with you "KaczynskiNigga" I have not watched a ; how you so intelligently put it "commercial" film in over a year; it is monotone and I am (nowadays) picky in that respect......art is open to interpretation so refer to previous statement

Being short of writing materials and fearing confiscation, he wrote it in tiny writing on a continuous, twelve-metre long roll of paper and it was unpublished until the twentieth century.

this story was also referenced in L'Âge d'Or (1930), the surrealist film directed by Luis Buñuel and written by Buñuel and Salvador Dalí.
pickpocketparty 1 year ago
@pickpocketparty Have you ever tried reading Justine by Sade? I thought I could read anything but I only got about two thirds of the way through it. Okay, I kept thinking, you've made your point! The clergy and the aristocracy were cruel, vile people and they abused many young women and girls but do I have to keep reading one nauseating description of fiendish sexual violence after another? Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to execute de Sade after he read some of Justine, but was talked out of it.
Asskicker32294 1 year ago
I see this movie just like I see Charles Manson. Most think Charles Manson is some smart, unique, misunderstood character. (aside from murder) This movie is not really unique. I think it was made just for the shock factor. It's more common nowadays to see a movie like this. Most horror movies made in Italy were very graphic back then as well. It's one of those movies that would burn a hole in your soul too. Read it on Wikipedia...eww. :/
