I had the same problem with my big 6 year old tb gelding... i ended up riding him in and 5 1/2 inch curved rubber pellum it worked really good. and also try half haulting before the jumps.

Man... the highest ive ever jumped was 1.10... that was on a lil 13.2hh pony! But I'm working on moving up higher with my new horse, only problem is she goes way to fast around the course, she never hits anything but in some comps they dont like it when the horse flies around... any suggestions on how to improve it?

this is a great video!!!(: it shows how show jumping isn't all that easy! some friends of mine are like, its not a sport... your just sit there.. how are you out of breath? the horse does all the work. IM LIKE WELL THEN YOU TRY IT!! we just make it look easy ;] haha but great video!!

But she still insists that the horse does all the work! Hey I've been told that my horse won't be a good jumper because he stretches his head to far/low when he jumps. Why is this bad and can you fix it? I don't intend on jumping higher than I already do but does it make them better jumpers in general if you can fix this problem? Your help would be appriciated so comment back or messge me =)

Hi =) Well I'm just a regular intermediate rider, I mean I do some hunter competitions but I'm far from being a professionnal ;) I can still advise you to invite your horse to collect a little bit more over the jumps by working on little uprights, like cavalettis for example. Don`t jump too high or too wide, just encourage him to round his back by keeping a good contact but don't forget to give his mouth either =)

Don't worry, while it is good for a horse to lengthen over jumps, the exaggeration of that movement can be fixed ! Do a lot of flatwork also, trying to collect him and get him light but on the bit. He should engage his hindquarters more and lift his back under you. But most of all : get some professionnal help as well ! =)

@TeenageDirtbag88 depends on what type of jumping you do: show jumping or hunter jumpers. Generally, in show jumping, when the jumps get big, you want the horse to stretch out like they do up in the video, creating what is called a bascule, aka a nice flowing, curved line. This means that they are using their back and lifting in their shoulders. You can't have a bascule with their heads in the air. So yes, it should be stretched out a bit, but to far down can lead to probems. :)

@TeenageDirtbag88 Whoever told you that is probably wrong, horses should stretch their head down when they jump; it gives them more power, as long as they pick up their knees.... if hes not picking his legs up enough, then try some gymnastics lines with single strides and bounces.... :)
