We can nitpick at the subtle differences between this team and T&M, but at the end of the day, no one can deny that this program had much more of an emotional and artistic impact on the audience (and the audience includes the judges). They literally brought the house down. I do feel bad, though, that T&M won gold but not the free skate, b/c that makes the experiences a bit anti-climatic for them, I'm sure.
Even though they had a mistake on the last lift, I barely noticed. Amazing and Beautiful performance! They deserved the 6.0's IMO. Their jumps and throws are far more superior than T&M. They are the best!
they are definitely unmatched in their artistry, and I think that their technique is impressive too. the wide throws (even if she does sometimes come down a little early) and more importantly how great in sync/chemistry they are together. truly an amazing couple <3
What is up with the judges and commentators? Do lifts and spins not matter in pair skating? How can one give a 6.0 with such glaring problems? Major problem on the dismount of the last lift, and the previous one nearly ground to a halt... Spins with weak positions and traveling away from each other... (Note: I would have no issue with placing S/Z first but don't pretend some fundamental elements are meaningless. By giving those 6.0s that is what the judges are saying: Some elements don't matter)
@accw: I think what the judges were saying is: Fuck it, this is the last time we will be able to give out 6.0's at an international competition, and this team brought the house down with a historic performance, so let's reward them accordingly. I mean, I don't know, but the fact that they had one flaw on their final lift (after performing 12 elements virtually without flaw, and while the crowd of 10,000 was on its feet screaming over the music); I think we can forgive the judges for a 6.
Wow, that must be one of the iconic performances in world champs history. Though they messed up the exit of their signature lift at the end, all those 6.0's were so well-deserved. I can't blame T & M for their reaction, feeling a bit defeated. How difficult it must be to win the gold medal only because they're greatest rivals messed up in the short. Even though they skated so well, it was kind of a win by default. No one would have chosen their best over S & Z that night.
If you love this - watch the German version. It does the full play-back and the full audience reaction - with the people shouting "sechs, sechs" - "six, six" and the overwhelming applause.
Love this...their 2003 and 2004 LP are my favorite pair performances of all time. I remember after seeing that performance I was convinced they were in love (hadn't announced their relationship at that time. Probably the most emotional and tender pairs performance i have ever seen. I hope they win GOLD in 2010!
What a horrible mistake they have made at the end. They should have done that better. watch their other nutcracker program on youtube. that one is much better.
The Chinese teams seem to get better with age... Shen/Zhao have been around for at least 10 years at this point, and towards the end their artistry really came through. I'm starting to see a similar quality with Pang/Tong, whereas the younger pair of Zhang/Zhang are still all about the tricks. I wonder why they don't focus more on artistry earlier on in their careers.
Anyway, what a fantastic skate here, this was PURE artistry.
It's too bad they were only 4th after the short program, cuz back in the day the only flaw to the 6.0 system [well besides the whole 2002 olympics cheating scandal] was that if you were 4th, in order to win the first place finisher had to finish 3rd or lower in the free program. So while Shen/Zhao totally blew everyone away in the free, the leaders after the short skated well and were able to finish second, so they took the title.
A 6.0 isn't just pure perfection. Remember 1994 Worlds when Elvis Stojko ALMOST landed the quad triple combo but lost his edge at the end? Judges still gave him a 6.0 because everything else was perfect and the whole deal was just so incredible. It can be a reward for pushing the envelope.
Glad someone else picked up the final lift; always thought something was off with it. Still one of their finest programs..such a great piece of music for them.
That was amazing. almost perfect. they shouldn't have gotten 6.0 in their technical scores, because the last lift really brought the performance down. unfortunate!
Of course no one is technically perfect, but they did better than Totmianina and Marinin, who had already got 5.9s for technical scores. So the judges gave Shen and Zhao 6.0 to put them first.
they were better than T&M technically? No,T&M were flawless ,Shen&Zhao completely missed the last lift and of course their trademark - lot of unison on the spins. Presentation - yes worth of 6.0 but not technically.
i just finished watching totmianina & marinin's lp at the worlds, and i must say their performance wasnt perfect, they didnt have a perfect unison on the side-by-side spins either, just like the chinese, and he strugled a bit with the landing of the side-by-side triple salchow... i do agree with u in the fact the chinese shouldnt have got 6.0s in the technical marks, b/c 6.0 in the old scoring system means "perfection" and techniquelly this program wasnt perfect...
Marinin's 3s was't a mistake - fully rotated and landed on one foot although out of synch, while dropping a partner on the lift is a serious mistake -should be deducted for. Besides T&M had higher difficulty - 3t2t COMBO and 3sal - two different triples and sal is more difficult than 3t. S&Z only 2aseq(!)3t and the same 3t, the unison wasn't perfect as well and 3t underrotated by Shen. In s-b-s spins not only they lost the unison, but Zhao also travelled a lot and huge distance between them.
I would tie them technically ,no way Shen&Zhao should get higher marks and of course not 6.0 with such a mistake. However in the presentation S&Z did deserve 6.0, T&M 5.9.
@egodiegoego I saw the lift - I saw perfectly them losing the balance right after the take -off and Shen starting to fall after 2 rotations. This is a serious mistake (and not the only one in this program).
i had forgotten about this conversation we had here xD... hey hatula87, i believe she wasnt dropped before time, the mistake was in putting her down, which is not a required thing, to make is as difficult as they always did, so its not really a serious mistake...
When watching, pay carefull attention to the takeoff and Zhao's carriage through it- it becomes clear that the lift wasn't good from the very begining- the takeoff was awkward, Zhao's footwork and flow- awfull, so there was no chance they could keep the balance and they really didn't- she fell in his arms. From the takeoff and the first turn it looked like he's going to drop her.
also the difference between a triple salchow and triple toe loop, is minimun, in CoP the difference is only .5, which can be covered by how superior they were to T&M in other elements like the throws and the twist (which has a collision when putting her down, which IS an actuall mistake)... im not fighting with u tho, just pointing out why i think S&Z r superior to T&M, or were at least in this LP (well they were also many other times) not fighting cuz i admire ur knowledge :D
Shen&Zhao used to have the best twist among pairs, there's no doubt about it. It's different, however, with the throws - they do have great height, but the technique of throwing (the takeoff)is sloppy. In addition Zhao don't hold the landing position (not only on the throws). In this particular skate the second throw had an unbalanced landing and in both throws Zhao also jumped on the takeoff. Their weak areas were all the non-jumping elements, where T&M were stronger.
Ihave rewatched T&M program and actually this time they had better throws than Shen&Zhao- accurate takeoff, great height, very secure landing- she has great deep edge and holds the extention for extra seconds and he also raises the free leg on the exit (Zhao doesn't).
So what are you saying? That the old system used in skating had nothing to do with the mark, it was just the placing that counted. Why then did we need the marks? We could have saved a lot of time by just being shown the ordinals. There was such a big error at the end of the routine and they had so many perfect marks.....a joke!!
BUT... since totmianina had already got 5.9s then the judgdes had to give the chinese higher marks, counting on the fact neither of both programs was perfect, but the chinese was superior, b/c of he way superior throws and triple twist, that's why the chinese had to get higher marks than the russians and since totmianina & marinin had already go 5.9s then the chinese got 6.0s...

In an ideal world, they would have skated this at Salt Lake 2002. There would be no gold medal controversy. Canada and Russia would be 2&3. And , there would be no new scoring system and skating would still be beautiful today.
They should have won the Gold in 2006, had he not injured himself. One of the best pair teams of all time. They skate as one, seamless movement. Totmyaniana & Marinin skate cold, no emotion. Shen & Zhao skate with passion and love for each other. Simply beautiful!!
Shen and Zhou are far superior to Gordeeva Grinkov. These two and Berezhnaya and Sikurelidze, and Sale and pelletier, all in the same time period, so amazing. I wish they had landed that quad sow, they deserved it, no one did throws like them.
