Once, just once, I'd like to see people NOT adding in their own silly crap to what otherwise is good advice. The mane stuff is baloney -many horses have their manes "trained" as youngsters to one side or the other, and this will last a lifetime unless the mane is roached. Horses do get one-sided, but you address this through a conditioning program, not saddle fit. Otherwise, the advice is fairly good - many people put their saddles too far forward and restrict the horse's motion.
Nicely shot video with good explanations however the BS about the Mane is utterly ridiculous to me. I am a a breeder of TB racehorses and sport horses and a 9th generation Saddler, and totally just do NOT agree with the "mane statement"; much too many variables involved in the "mane statement"; though I do agree that horses are "left or right" sided and even more so racehorses are "diagonally balanced". kudos to the Producers; Rice Saddlery, LLC
I never knew that when a horse twitches in that spot it's because it's getting pinched by the saddle! A horse that I ride would twitch his shoulder area like sometimes that and now I know why and can watch for that. Helpful video!
Great stuff, thanks. Allow me please to suggest the most comfortable saddle Iknow. Type in MONTURA VAQUERA and check out the Spanish stock saddle (from Spain not South America). In-built padding, no need for a blanket (can use an English one), tail strap to keep it in place, no horn (we don't use it in Spain), one girth and always sheepskin to sit on (synthetic or natural, you choose). Just try it, I'm sure you'll like it, there is no saddle like it in the world. You can find them in the USA.
@jordand196911. just because you're standing right behind a horse doesn't ALWAYS mean that horse will kick. especially if its a kind horse that you know.
@jordand196911. If you walk quickly behind a horse that doesn't know you're there it might kick you because you have startled it. When walking behind a horse you should touch him as you're walking around him, letting him know that you are there. You should always walk closely to the horse if you are walking behind it because if it does kick you will not catch the full force of the blow. I have owned and handled horses my whole life, never been kicked walking or standing behind one.
I fit my saddle ahead of your hand. Forward of cranial nerve 11.
Not on it or behind it. That just doesn't work my dear.
The shoulder is a swinging blade not a joint. The blade still moves freely below the saddle.
I can feel the difference when ridden. If the forefront of my saddle is behind the shoulder muscle as you describe. There's trouble, resistance and pain.
But then again you did sit an English Saddle on it. They don't fit anyways.
Wonderful video thanks. I'm referring it to a friend who is having saddle fit issues. Just saw Joanna give several lectures at Equine Affair and was very impressed with what she had to say.
Excellent video. This is going to help me fit a jumping saddle for my haflinger who has a wide back. Loved your explanation (I'm a physical therapist) - it made perfect sense. Thank you.
well, the whole "no standing behind the horse" thing is usually for children, or people who are unfamiliar with horses.
some horses really dont care, and if your horse isnt a jerk, it wont kick you for no reason. some horses, like this one, arent touchy. you just gotta know your horse..
If you are touching its but and rubbing it, talking to it and making sure your horse knows you are there. You walk right by there but. You are more likly to get kicked if you walk way way way around there but. If you are right behind them and they kick. Its not gonna hurt as much.
unless of course your horse is skittish or you dont no the horse... if you trust the horse then yes you can walk behind it .. but a horse you dont no you should nvr walk behind no matter what
Yeah, guys ALWAYS check your saddle! I just got a new horse and i didnt check the saddle, though it was pressing down on his withers. Fluke on the first day maybe? anyway, he started acting really badly he always constantly threw his head up so i got a saddle riser and in an instant he stopped acting up.
yes thank you for that great info. I've been having behavioral problems and I'm thinking the saddle width is too big. I will check on it as soon I go back to the barn
Great video! I was learning there! I especially thought it was interesting what she said about the shoulder being bigger on one side than the other. I wonder how that is? Are horses right and left handed as humans? Anyway It is just what I need for my new website and I am embedding it there as I am writing this!
Thank you so much! This video is highly informative. It has helped me fit my extremely wide Haffie mare comfortably. She now is able to move freely and gain her true scope over fences!
Great Video!
