  • Great Video!

  • How about a western saddle ?

  • very helpful, thank you

  • Great video!! I

  • Once, just once, I'd like to see people NOT adding in their own silly crap to what otherwise is good advice. The mane stuff is baloney -many horses have their manes "trained" as youngsters to one side or the other, and this will last a lifetime unless the mane is roached. Horses do get one-sided, but you address this through a conditioning program, not saddle fit. Otherwise, the advice is fairly good - many people put their saddles too far forward and restrict the horse's motion.

  • SERIOUSLY is a good video ,very good!!!

  • This was so helpful!!! It really made me realize how important it is to have a properly fitted saddle.

  • Great vid! Now where is the 'how to fit your western saddle' we were told about in the very end?! :D

  • Nicely shot video with good explanations however the BS about the Mane is utterly ridiculous to me. I am a a breeder of TB racehorses and sport horses and a 9th generation Saddler, and totally just do NOT agree with the "mane statement"; much too many variables involved in the "mane statement"; though I do agree that horses are "left or right" sided and even more so racehorses are "diagonally balanced". kudos to the Producers; Rice Saddlery, LLC

  • this is sooo helpful and makes a LOT of sense. THANK YOU!

  • This video was incredibly helpful! It made everything make SO much more sense!

  • I never knew that when a horse twitches in that spot it's because it's getting pinched by the saddle! A horse that I ride would twitch his shoulder area like sometimes that and now I know why and can watch for that. Helpful video!

  • WOW! THANKS so much for taking the time to share this! We may soon be getting our first horse and we want to do right by her.

  • Fantastic. Thank you.

  • Great stuff, thanks. Allow me please to suggest the most comfortable saddle Iknow. Type in MONTURA VAQUERA and check out the Spanish stock saddle (from Spain not South America). In-built padding, no need for a blanket (can use an English one), tail strap to keep it in place, no horn (we don't use it in Spain), one girth and always sheepskin to sit on (synthetic or natural, you choose). Just try it, I'm sure you'll like it, there is no saddle like it in the world. You can find them in the USA.

  • Very helpful!!

  • @jordand196911. just because you're standing right behind a horse doesn't ALWAYS mean that horse will kick. especially if its a kind horse that you know.

  • @jumper12397 your right! good comment!

  • prefer to ride bare back myself

  • Remember never to stand behind a horse or it will kick you and yesterday i went horse riding

  • @jordand196911. If you walk quickly behind a horse that doesn't know you're there it might kick you because you have startled it. When walking behind a horse you should touch him as you're walking around him, letting him know that you are there. You should always walk closely to the horse if you are walking behind it because if it does kick you will not catch the full force of the blow. I have owned and handled horses my whole life, never been kicked walking or standing behind one.

  • is this only for fitting an english saddle?

  • This is a great video. I posted it on my blog!

  • I fit my saddle ahead of your hand. Forward of cranial nerve 11.

Not on it or behind it. That just doesn't work my dear.

The shoulder is a swinging blade not a joint. The blade still moves freely below the saddle.

I can feel the difference when ridden. If the forefront of my saddle is behind the shoulder muscle as you describe. There's trouble, resistance and pain.

But then again you did sit an English Saddle on it. They don't fit anyways.

Do him a favor and wing that into the bush.

  • great break down of a fitting~~ thanks

  • I do equine massage and this is excellent. Thanks.

  • interesting video. i learned a lot of things

  • Wonderful video thanks. I'm referring it to a friend who is having saddle fit issues. Just saw Joanna give several lectures at Equine Affair and was very impressed with what she had to say.

  • WOW REALLY HELPED! thanks a lot!!! i didnt really know that. but i'm going to check when i go see my horse.

  • Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. So many points no one has told me. I will go out and check today for sure.

    Thanks

  • do mares only have the cranile nerve 11 or do geldings have it to thanks get back with me please and amazing video i loved it.

  • @sleepingdead for sure mares cause the stallions bite the mares there.

  • Fabulous! VERY instructive!!

  • Excellent video. This is going to help me fit a jumping saddle for my haflinger who has a wide back. Loved your explanation (I'm a physical therapist) - it made perfect sense. Thank you.

  • well, the whole "no standing behind the horse" thing is usually for children, or people who are unfamiliar with horses.

some horses really dont care, and if your horse isnt a jerk, it wont kick you for no reason. some horses, like this one, arent touchy. you just gotta know your horse..

  • that was very good thank u x

  • everything i've ever been told says NOT to stand behind a horse...

  • yeah, make sure you ring the emergency room before you do this!! lol

  • LOL ..... Exactly.. Hahaha

  • If you are touching its but and rubbing it, talking to it and making sure your horse knows you are there. You walk right by there but. You are more likly to get kicked if you walk way way way around there but. If you are right behind them and they kick. Its not gonna hurt as much.

  • unless of course your horse is skittish or you dont no the horse... if you trust the horse then yes you can walk behind it .. but a horse you dont no you should nvr walk behind no matter what

  • Yeah.

  • omg this is so stupid but i shouldnt have watched it so im not gonna say nothin else!

  • that wasn't 2 minutes that was 5 minutes,,,lol

  • Yeh Buh dats coz she was explaining it but when you actually do it it bearly takes 2 minutes

  • i wanna sell mine in order to buy this horse!!!im so annoyed with my parents

  • Awesome video. Very informative. I can't wait until Fed Ex delivers my saddle! I'll be checking the fit. Thanks for the info. :]

  • where can i find a video that shows how to fit my western saddle? ive been looking, but i cant find it... please help!

anyways, this video is really good and informative! thanks!

  • Wow all of this Information is very helpful and I never knew about any of it before. I'll be sure to check my saddle now!

  • Yeah, guys ALWAYS check your saddle! I just got a new horse and i didnt check the saddle, though it was pressing down on his withers. Fluke on the first day maybe? anyway, he started acting really badly he always constantly threw his head up so i got a saddle riser and in an instant he stopped acting up.

  • Nice info..I'll be checkin my Cookie today!

  • yes thank you for that great info. I've been having behavioral problems and I'm thinking the saddle width is too big. I will check on it as soon I go back to the barn

  • Great information, thank you!

  • omg! that helps so much! my lease horse saddle is sooo bad..considering going bareback till we talk to the owners..yes..thats how bad it is!!!

  • I had no idea that most horses are left handed. This is a great video.

  • that helps sooo much!! im getting a new saddle and im glad i watched that! thank you!!

  • k i will try that

  • what if ur horse has her mane parted on both side my mare is a haflinger and she has half of mane on both sides?

  • Mine has that too; But she said you can look from behind to see which shoulder is bigger.

  • Great video! I was learning there! I especially thought it was interesting what she said about the shoulder being bigger on one side than the other. I wonder how that is? Are horses right and left handed as humans? Anyway It is just what I need for my new website and I am embedding it there as I am writing this!

  • That was really goofd, very imformative!

  • this was fantastic! However I would have LOVED to have seen a saddle put on the horse properly fit.

  • Thank you so much! This video is highly informative. It has helped me fit my extremely wide Haffie mare comfortably. She now is able to move freely and gain her true scope over fences!

  • very informative, I'll certainly look at this whole topic with a new perspective!
