Ive just bought this DVD. It's not gonna play on my DVD Player, but I don't care, I've been looking for this movie for ages & I'll find a multiregion thing I can play it on! Roth's novella is an immense piece of compressed writing and this looks like a genius adaptation!

I can't believe it! I saw this once about 20 years ago and have been trying to see it again ever since. Thank you so much! Rutger Hauer is a wonderful actor. I wish he had made more films like this.

Ermanno Olmi is a true master of the frame.And i consider this work as a true gem.Although it was shot in english it never quite made the leap into that "market". Another wonderful reason to look for things here. In the fable this is after Joseph Roth s novel the homeless man discovers some meaning in his drinking visions before he passes away. It is blissful. And life in this story is layered with sensitivity & the cartoon like grotesque

It took me abaut 3 months to find and purchase that movie, but now eventually I have it on my shelf, and I'm only waiting for calm evening to open a beer and turn it on, in order to compare movie with great book, which I still have in my memory...

The novel is actually much deeper and more philosophical than the movie. In Joseph Roth's novel, the question is: What is better, to live a righteous life or spend it having fun? The mail character chooses the latter and dies happy. But he was still a righteous man because he believed to be acting morally.

In case you don't know, someone uploaded the whole movie under the Italian title, "La Leggenda del Santo Bevitore".

I agree, a beautiful, touching movie with a great, most underestimated actor.

@septicbro I searched for the movie but I have been unable to find it. Is it on YouTube in its entirety? Or is it somewhere else. It is absolutely one of my favorites. I first saw it in a theater in Madrid over 20 years ago. I have an Italian video tape, but my international VCR is broken...

This film is absoloutely fantastic, really moving and profound, it's a shame it's never shown and only available on imported dvd, surely this makes up for the straight to video releases Hauer did in the late 80's, the guy can really act when he has a decent script.
