In the event that you haven't played it already, Dawn of War 2 is really the most amazing video game you can play. It does take RTS to a innovative level. In one sense, I understand them wanting to reflect the tabletop game a bit more (thus the no-reinforcement and such), however they have gone about it the wrong way.
Tabletop games are generally determined one way or another by the initial skirmish, shy of bad luck rolls. This makes for short and anticlimatic matches in an RTS.

quick question, i usually play eldar, ive won a few, but i always have trouble later on in the game when the more advanced and powerful units mainly because i have no idea what unit is best to invest in, any chance someone could give me their opinion on some good units to use? cheers (:
..they downgraded(made it stupider) the gameplay from the first game, wich back then, you had to use brains in order to win, but this here is a click orgy..like who clicks the units to the stratigic point faster wins, this game is like pacman, collect stratigic points in order to be stronger and kill the ,ghosts, .....adn thats it, no finesse no tactics no defensive play or agressive its all about rushing to the stratigic points...... this is badder then c&c3
dude youve got your facts wrong...1st up theyve upgraded it if anything....standing in the open taking a lot of bullets is real brains for you? in this your units should take cover, collecting stratigic locations to make you gain the upper hand is very tactical, so if anything it's got finesse, tactics and defensive play, most of this stuff is what you would have to do in real life...that's what theyre are trying to do, make it more "realistic"
I would really like him to try out a 3v3 VP match. Currently he is judging the game off a 1v1 Annihilation match, which the game isn't supposed to be balanced around. He also says the game is dumbed down for noobs, yet half of the time he doesn't use cover ...
However, each to their own, I think DoW2 is an amazing and fun game.
its not for everyone, but i really think it matters on the skill level of your opponents(if they arent skilled enough a single build order would be able to take on anything, ive found that skilled players force me to change tactics which it turns makes it fun) i also only play 10-15 games per day so as not to wear it out
I agree with your commentary. I am a long time company of heroes player and this game is water downed version of CoH. Another example of Games Workshop insisting that a computer company thin their games down to age 5 playability.
If I start the game ,, then you got the trailer and some company's etc ,, but is very very slow and if I'm in the game its alsoo soo slow ,, almost if I got high lagg and every time I start the game Its al so slow I read the forum but I didnot find a good answer to me problem ..
Hmmm I disagree with the notion that removing reinforcing was a bad move. The highlight of DoW 2 now is that the game more closely resembles the actual tabletop (no reinforcing at all). Though it is a shame that many units were removed from the game, I think the trade-off between less units and more simpler gameplay is well worth getting back to the foundation of this game: Warhammer 40k. There are other types of RTSs that may fit your tastes better (soulstorm one of them).
VaulSC:...looks like this the first time for you to do a lot of things with this game from the looks of this video.......isn't it a bit early to say what you've said about the game?
I downloaded the game and it won't even work cause I keep getting an error. The game looks pretty cool, but I am still debating if I get this or Soulstorm.
Actually I admire relic because this kind of new battle system is kind of unique. Its not the best way for a rts game but at least its creative. To really love the game you gotta play it first. Remember people this is a beta not the real full game.
I'm sorry, but this guy does't know what he is talking about.
They got rid of the gimmicky stuff and replaced it where you actually have to put thought into what you do than go for certain combos/build orders..
You can't reenforce at a whim, you have to decide to retreat, and then launch a new attack. Rather than soultstorm where you can just send a squad in on overwatch.
Your squads get suppressed, you cant just charge a well placed gunline.
been playing game lot today its frikking awesome, windows live is a bit stupid though to setup.
gameplay is lots of fun because its all down now to how well you control your troops, a good player who is vastly outnumbered can easily defeat a much larger army controlled by a less good player
I hate this game. Who did they think they were going to sell this game to? All the people who made Dawn of War 1 such a success? This game has nothing that was good about the original. It's so bad. So, so shitty.
I've been playing for a couple days so far, and I've had a couple of easy games. There is a lot more depth however when you play with people that actually have skill. The micromanagement is really intense and I like the variety of the hero's and races. Although the vid was pretty nice.
tbh i for one liked the difference between the races in DoW and i hope they fix that by maybe including a game mode that allows base building later on. if not, i guess someones going to make a nice litte mod for me to play with:P
The game will ship with 4 races: Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, and 'Nids, most likely more races will be added through expansions...such as in DOW1.
The units avaliable in the beta will most likely all the units able to be used in the game, though some notable units are missing, showing that we have not seen everything (Librarian)
omfg. its the beta! see those empty slots they will probably be filled with more units. probably. and for those who are like omg there are no necrons. your gay. the beta isnt the full game. and will have different classes.
I don't think that your point about it being too simple is valid. First off it is unexpanded so obviously there will be many more units on the way, but the sheer amount of wargear makes units vastly different like tyranid warriors having three different weapons that can make them AV, SU, or CC. Other than that it seems like the game will actually be more complex and variable than games like sc2. This game hasn't been dumbed down quite the opposite has happened only the wrapping has changed.
I can understand some of the points you've made but your review is flawed in the fact that Soulstorm and DoW2 are different games. You seem to be basing alot of your comments on DoW, in which the RTS experience is where you build a base and build lots of units. In Dow 2 there is more sense of tactics. The squads are smaller but combat happens more realistically (cover) and it happens quicker . The reason why you don't get much resources is because it makes you value the units you got more.
so far this game has me very hyped, love the small scale-tactical feel to it. The simplicity and lack of content is kinda concerning though, hope they fix it in the final version or some expansion.
all you people are fucking stupid it got "dumed down" is what half of u r saying well yeah it would its a new sieris did all of u real think that they would have all 11 races in it right off the bat nooooo n the fact that they made the sqouds smaller well yeah they probly have upgrades to make them into 1 man armys so stop whininnnnnggggggg
Now here is the man who knows what he is saying.U are dumed down.Hell i would like to see a noob trying to play this game now.He would lose all his units before u can snap you fingers.
Enjoyed the vid. I agree dumbing down rts games is kinda sad. Im a big Warhammer 40k fan and dow2 looked great in cinematics but it seems they made it just eye candy which is unfortunate.
We can only hope they imporve it through updating and expanding like the website suggests.
Why have they dumbed it down? seriously. the point of a RTS is so that it's challenging and hard. I hope Halo wars doesnt disappoint me as much as this has. :(
The Eldar arnt ment for large armies the smaller numbers would make you feel the need to be more tatical about your moves not just rushing in like a crazed ork
i have to agree with you how they dumb it down to such a point that my bro who only plays FPS can manage to play without any care for fleet of foot and such makes playing against him just annoying unlike in SoulStorm where i could wipe him out in no time
I know u are not talking about DOW II because a noob cant play it so good,Maybe u lost because the game is new and u are not used to smaller number of units in squad.
i didn't lose though i just got annoyed because took more time to kill him now that they have two turrets at base making annoying and i was playing tyranids he was eldar spamming Scannons which just ended up wasting my time
This guy does not know what he is talking about... not only does the beta not offer all of the units... it is based of the COH gameplay which is one of the most competitive 1v1 RTS games ever created. Notice how little he talks about unit upgrades and strat and how terrible his opponent is... he doesnt even talk about cover; the most important new feature being implamented.
if DoW2 were just DoW with better graphics what'd be the point of making it in the first place!?
DoW2 is a blend of the WH40k universe with the engine of CoH, which I am sure a good many of you have played.
As far as strategy is concerned I have heard many say it is just RTT, lacking a real strategic edge, but isn't that taking the RTS genre too specifically must every RTS fit a certain mold for you to be happy?
Give DoW2 a chance and play the beta before "giving up hope"
The game rocks! You just need to get used to the facts that there are much smaller number of units(8 marines in dow 3 marines in dow2) but the units can do so much more. With only 1 unit at the right place u can wipe out a great number of units. And this shit this dude is saying that it is simple? LOL yea right no offense but noobs cant play this game.If u rush in like Rambo style u are toasted.+ u CAN reinforse on the field. There are units for that (wartruck at orks, marines have rhino ect)
Dude...there are bunch of units in original DOW that nobody used.ALSO there are 9 playable races in DOW here we have 4.And more will come.Shit i mean every unit here has a purpose and upgrades and whole lot of shit and no more bunch of units that cant find a path.Cover is kick ass.Snipers ind DOW could only do morale dmg for late game are shit here snipers rly snipe and kill a LOT of units.U CAN NOT say this is a bad game because IT IS NOT.If u want DOW with better graphic go dl some mode.
this is simply no longer dawn of war the game i actually wanted. its something totally diffrent which is not wat im looking for so ppl are reccomending starcraft 2 as the rts this year sorry relic u ruined a great series :(
Couple more things i have say: you commented on the dumbed down of this game: that assumes dow 1 was intelligent. This game is going to get smiliar and repetetive but every RTS does that, Starcraft does that, DOW1 was not an intelligent RTS. It relied heavily on turtle tactics, DOW2 requires you to attacka and push as much as possible, extremely fast paced. Simplier is bad but there is enough combination to make this game exciting. It is FAST, and requires speed. Soulstorm was a joke of a game.
Thank you im honestly hearing bullshit about its not the original Dawn o War,of course it isint dawn of war was good for its year then after a while with its expansions it was like you said a joke and anyway at the time they were making DOW:Soulstorm relic were working on COH series which was probably the one of the best RTS games ever. But i guess thats changed DOW:II is the best ive seen and played so far.
Curious how he played annihilate rather than VP capture which offers a better experience.
I disagree with a great deal of his commentary as elitism, while simultaneously overlooking a great deal of the complexity inherent to the squad mechanics. while I would say that the game has been opened up to more people, certain aspects (grenades for example) are now more complex. Suppressive fire is a welcome addition.
I personally like the changes to the game, feels more like tabletop brought to life.
ok im kinda having an annoyance on this game. i played the coh demo (my computers video card was not that great a 6200 and now its broken so i got an 8400 gs hoping to be able to run it on my comp and to play this game atleast on medium with 40+ fps) but why is there no ragdoll for the units? i noticed when an ally in coh got blown up with a rocket launcher or nade it was twisting and turning in the air realisticly, in here its the same pre animated deaths like last game. wuts up with that?
amcarde2 i have to agree with you. I've been reading the forums since august, also i've read most of the beta forums and its amazing how much people are bashing this game. Because its not a SC or the original DoW. if you followed the game at all you would know that their was no base building and that they were changing a lot of the mechanics. So people who don't like it, don't play it just don't bash one of the better games out there
DoW 2 isn't about "fixing" DoW. That's what everyone needs to learn. It's a new game, and with a new game comes some changes. If you want to play DoW, play DoW. If I'm not mistaken, the DoW 2 Beta doesn't delete DoW off of your computer.
I'm fairly amazed at the narrow minded bad attitudes that are judging this game so severely already.
I think this game was OK, but bad balanced, far from 40k background, and strategies as often to do a big army and them go into a big melee against the enney's big army... or rush. And Soulstorm was probably the worst of all DOW
What i don't understand is why people flame developpers that try to make something new. Everybody says that most game miss new things and originality, and when someone try it, he is flammed because people loved the old one.
Why in the hell does everyone just seem to want a re-skinned version of other games? If you want to play CoH, go play CoH. If you want to play Soulstorm, go play Soulstorm. I'm pleased with what they've done with DoW 2, and I can't wait to see where they take it from here.
That is a good point i want a new game, not wut blizzard is doing with starcraft 2 by just giving it some new fresh paint. by the way, do tyranids use cover at all?
Oh, please, l'aux jeux video n'est pas Starcraft 2, asshole! Didn't know how to say "asshole" in French. Anywho, this game IS NOT STARCRAFT 2. Do units in Starcraft 2 hunker down behind cover? Does Starcraft 2 make aggressive playing a must? No. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
I have the same feeling about the game as you, I liked the whole idea of a more tactical game but it just doesn't work really, and spam tactics still works... I'm still going to buy the game mostly for the singelplayer and coop.
IMO it is basically it is a step backwards from CoH; which frustrates me. I would have preferred CoH in space as some call it, which is basically using the same fantastic formula of CoH while adding new features to it like the wargear.
Though, try the beta for yourself and see, dont take my word for it. ;)
I still plan on getting it since they plan on adding the other races, maps, extras, via DLC & expansions.
If you liked DoW, youll most likely love DoW2. If you love CoH as the spiritual successor to DoW then you might be very upset and disappointed like me. The game is still a lot of fun, but it is not a COH breaker.
DoW2 plays like a supped up DoW with some of the excellent mechanics found in CoH. The problem is the Devs designed this game around SP and not MP, so due to the extensive SP campaign they were limited on MP, which is where they let me down, but others may still love it.
This guy means well, but does not give this game a fair assessment. The A.I. is pretty bad, so MP is where the action is and that is where this game can shine.
IMO the game is dumbed down from CoH, not DoW.
Lol, this game is not simpler than Soulstrom either; there are plenty of units to start out with (14-15 including heroes per each race, with very little overlapping in roles.)
This game is much better than DoW in that it does add many elements of strategic depth that was in CoH.
he keeps comparing it to soulstorm, and in my oppinion soul storm was the worst expansion of them all.
and repeated references to "dumbing it down" i think he means making it simpler to use, tactics still play a huge role in it it just doesnt require 4 hands and 20 fingers to hotkey manage and army.
He's right, the game is very dumbed down. I played it for a while yesterday and the game has very little depth. It's not just a matter of being easier to control. You have one path of tech advancement and very limited unit choice; you don't build a base or base defenses. It was very disappointing to play. In my opinion they need to make the commander choice much more impacting and add in some new units specific to each commander.
Did he judge the game based off of a guess on how something works without actually knowing? If you have an iota of intelligence, take this review with a grain of salt.
ok the only issue is u cant say it looks bad because its the beta... they are still testing the game. and the full game will come with more stuff. did the halo3 beta come with all the maps no. did it come with all the weapons no. do you get what im saying?
There's just not enough close attention to detail here. I know the campaign is gonna be only blood ravens, BUT multiplayer and Relics statement of "We want multiplayer to be more accessible", well I don't feel they've done that statement any justice at all to be honest...there's so much missing, I can only hope they address it in downloadable content.
Also Inquisitors, the ability to distinguish the chapters apart from their colours, i.e: Space Wolves WILL look alot different from Blood Ravens, more hair, fangs, wolf pelts on armour etc
when you have a sequel you kind of expect it to knock the former on it's ass somewhat, sure it looks way better visually, I like what they've done with the emphasis on the Squad and not so much base building/resources etc, BUT I feel it's let down mainly on one thing: the units. In soulstorm you had Grey Knights, the best Chapter ever...wher are they here? Nowhere thats where!
I kinda agree with this chap, I found it a tad disappointing, the only way I can see it becoming a step forward, certainly features wise, is thru downloadable content.
i can't believe how much shit u chat on about, we all know there's less units and it's all about using the right units for the right job, you're slagging it off saying there's not a lot do but u say that you're gonna play it for ages, you're just a crap player, admit it!! loser.
so whats the deal with units then, there a limit, do they come in squads, do you build up you base like lat time , or is it justa tactical advantage game?
and balance issue? lol . dreadnaughts easy to take down? dude, they last the longest of all the walker units. yeah they cost more. but maybe you should try investing that resource in something else that wont be as easily countered.
slow pace?... yeah.. sure if your opponent sucks. the game requires you to keep moving and planning ahead.. not sitting in your base massing units for an assault.
I think its a good game, but were they went wrong was calling it "Dawn of War 2", it would've been better to create a new franchise with the game because really its nothing like regular DOW. Also they should make an exact copy of the regular DOW but with this graphic engine
Oh, and yeah, relic have said that any changes made after this "beta" was released will not be in the release form of the game. So it seems that the only changes which will be made are balancing numbers.
First, it isn't a "new form". He said it was similar to WC3 - the RPG element combined with RTS is not new at all. Second, it is the beta...but the release is in four weeks - doubt they're going to have time to gather, apply and test the feedback of the community. This isn't really a beta, it's more of a trial.
I don't really know too much about the process, but is there a chance that Relic will "smarten up" the game before full release? Is that what companies usually do, or is that wishful thinking?
Was really looking forward to this game until watching your vid! very disappointed :(! i will still get the game just to have ago myself! but not happy about them removing base building
i like the new look to it, its moving away from rts with bases and mass forces towards the tabletop version of the game. Hopefully they will make more units available especially with armies like eldar and tyranids in the game.
i tried to play on my crappy comp.. it worked but the gameplay and graphics were horrible. I have a 64mb dedicated grafix card...lol all the cool effects of the game are black squars...
they combined coh and dow to make this, but they just ended up dumbing it down too much... Coh required lots of strategic thinking and stuff but i don't think the retreat thing works in dow, and neither does the fleet of foot crap...
Been playing the Beta myself. Have to say i am a little disappointed. Like you say it has been dumbed down a lot and all you need is the mouse...i also found it very slow paced.
There also a slight balance issue with some things. I found some things very easy to take down (e.g. Dreadnaughts) and some things quite overpowered (some hammer weilding ork unit, never looked at its name). Will play it a little more, but it wasn't what u was hoping for...(i miss base building too)
Nice commentary and I personally can't wait to try it out myself on the 28th when it goes public. I've gotta say that by playing 1v1 only, you're missing part of the point of the game.. The devs say that this game is supposed to be more team oriented and not too much about 1v1.
I can't comment on the dumbing down since I haven't tried it but I think it might relate to the team effort thing, so it's easier to pick up and the challenge will be working with others and coordinating your efforts.
Playing as a team relies on an entirely different skillset than just spamming/capping faster than someone else (extremely oversimplified, I know), as you can now be overwhelmed if you go out solo. Likewise, since much of the map can be smashed, I can imagine maps in the future having several possible routes to your base or points on the map, if they decide to use this feature.
So try out the team feature instead, especially if you have friends to play with, before saying it sucks :)
I'm kinda sad to see people rip on this game, it's trying to innovate on something different. Dawn of war wasn't that strategic either. Sure you could outmicro or outmacro your opponnent but was there anything actually strategic about it? I'm going to use a story as an example. A few years ago when I first got into RTS I played Homeworld and loved it forgot about it and went on to other games like COH and I can do pretty well playing with top 50 players like WithoutNick and GermanSupreme.
I came back to Homeworld 2 after completely having the strats from COH burned into my skull.
I could barely beat 2 easy computers, I was crap. People have gotten so used to using the same old strats, the same old modes that they've stopped accepting innovation, well that's not true, they've stopped taking in total innovation. They just take ideas from other games and pass them on to the next. This game is not meant to played 1v1, it's a tf2 style RTS.
I see your point, i am still a little disappointed with the game. Its true that a lot of RTS aren't strategic enough it was all down to who could build the most in the shortest time. Even though they have tried to make something new and different...i still find it lacking.
We'll have to see if the story/campaign mode can increase the game's replayablity. Vaul if you've only played Soulstorm then you've only hit the tip of the DOW space hulk. I don't know if thats the case, but you only mentioned Soulstorm, lol. But thanks 4 the review anyway.
they really toned this game down for noobies, which is sad since i missed mastering fof, no reapers to deal with heavy bolters and plasma cannon, very bad idea relic, the platforms they do give u r stupid, they will shoot what u tell them to shoot, there looks to no more auto target, the lvling up is ok, but once u get to lvl 5, u can waste close to everything, tyranids just felt to weak to be in the game, req comes in to slow, also everything cost way to much
they just should have done a better game of dow 1 with better graphics and a few new teams and more balanced and more units

Pretty poor review, FOF does reduce accuracy, so your whine about dow2 in the last 5 minutes is not needed.
If its dumbed down so much will I be expecting you in the top 100 ranked? Top 10? Blah go back to War 3 reviews.

I watched some of your more recent stuff where you fleshed it out more, I see where you are coming from.
gary0044187 3 years ago
You said yourself.. they put more emphasis on 3v3 and team play. Maybe you should try that?
loxyman13 3 years ago
Actually I admire relic because this kind of new battle system is kind of unique. Its not the best way for a rts game but at least its creative. To really love the game you gotta play it first. Remember people this is a beta not the real full game.
armr622 3 years ago
They changed infiltrate too, so it isn't as rock paper scissors as that awful method in soulstorm.
They've also made turrets alot more survivable, now attacking a base is actually a daunting prospect.
It's playstyle is adapted from COH, which is the most fun and challenging RTS i've played, and I've played loads.
I watched this vid, thinking it was crap, when I actually played the beta myself I fell in love.
It isn't more simple, it's less gimmicky.
dissinitbig 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but this guy does't know what he is talking about.
They got rid of the gimmicky stuff and replaced it where you actually have to put thought into what you do than go for certain combos/build orders..
You can't reenforce at a whim, you have to decide to retreat, and then launch a new attack. Rather than soultstorm where you can just send a squad in on overwatch.
Your squads get suppressed, you cant just charge a well placed gunline.

Basic info for lolcats-youtube idiots
Release Date set for Feb. 24
The game will ship with 4 races: Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, and 'Nids, most likely more races will be added through expansions...such as in DOW1.
The units avaliable in the beta will most likely all the units able to be used in the game, though some notable units are missing, showing that we have not seen everything (Librarian)

souldude151 3 years ago
I don't think that your point about it being too simple is valid. First off it is unexpanded so obviously there will be many more units on the way, but the sheer amount of wargear makes units vastly different like tyranid warriors having three different weapons that can make them AV, SU, or CC. Other than that it seems like the game will actually be more complex and variable than games like sc2. This game hasn't been dumbed down quite the opposite has happened only the wrapping has changed.
moawolf 3 years ago
I can understand some of the points you've made but your review is flawed in the fact that Soulstorm and DoW2 are different games. You seem to be basing alot of your comments on DoW, in which the RTS experience is where you build a base and build lots of units. In Dow 2 there is more sense of tactics. The squads are smaller but combat happens more realistically (cover) and it happens quicker . The reason why you don't get much resources is because it makes you value the units you got more.
WolfseerWoW 3 years ago
so far this game has me very hyped, love the small scale-tactical feel to it.

DXSTRYR 3 years ago
maybe they are just dumbing it down to get new people.
Then when expansion/really good patch comes out, it'll be harder.

This guy does not know what he is talking about... not only does the beta not offer all of the units... it is based of the COH gameplay which is one of the most competitive 1v1 RTS games ever created. Notice how little he talks about unit upgrades and strat and how terrible his opponent is... he doesnt even talk about cover; the most important new feature being implamented.
anthonyrun 3 years ago
By ye gods people.
if DoW2 were just DoW with better graphics what'd be the point of making it in the first place!?
DoW2 is a blend of the WH40k universe with the engine of CoH, which I am sure a good many of you have played.
As far as strategy is concerned I have heard many say it is just RTT, lacking a real strategic edge, but isn't that taking the RTS genre too specifically must every RTS fit a certain mold for you to be happy?
Give DoW2 a chance and play the beta before "giving up hope"
Tren2100 3 years ago
The game rocks! You just need to get used to the facts that there are much smaller number of units(8 marines in dow 3 marines in dow2) but the units can do so much more. With only 1 unit at the right place u can wipe out a great number of units. And this shit this dude is saying that it is simple? LOL yea right no offense but noobs cant play this game.If u rush in like Rambo style u are toasted.+ u CAN reinforse on the field. There are units for that (wartruck at orks, marines have rhino ect)
OrdoMallius 3 years ago
that is not the problem with DOW2.
u just do not have enough different units to make this game motivating for a long time.
there is nothing more to see after a really short amough of time.
oloolopatrolo 3 years ago
Dude...there are bunch of units in original DOW that nobody used.ALSO there are 9 playable races in DOW here we have 4.And more will come.Shit i mean every unit here has a purpose and upgrades and whole lot of shit and no more bunch of units that cant find a path.Cover is kick ass.Snipers ind DOW could only do morale dmg for late game are shit here snipers rly snipe and kill a LOT of units.U CAN NOT say this is a bad game because IT IS NOT.If u want DOW with better graphic go dl some mode.
OrdoMallius 3 years ago

OrdoMallius 3 years ago
This game is not original at all. This game is literally COH with a DoW skin. While watching this clip, I thought I was literally watching COH.
currymaster5 3 years ago
Couple more things i have say: you commented on the dumbed down of this game: that assumes dow 1 was intelligent. This game is going to get smiliar and repetetive but every RTS does that, Starcraft does that, DOW1 was not an intelligent RTS. It relied heavily on turtle tactics, DOW2 requires you to attacka and push as much as possible, extremely fast paced. Simplier is bad but there is enough combination to make this game exciting. It is FAST, and requires speed. Soulstorm was a joke of a game.
kingc0m 3 years ago
Thank you im honestly hearing bullshit about its not the original Dawn o War,of course it isint dawn of war was good for its year then after a while with its expansions it was like you said a joke and anyway at the time they were making DOW:Soulstorm relic were working on COH series which was probably the one of the best RTS games ever. But i guess thats changed DOW:II is the best ive seen and played so far.
TIMTIMPRODUCTIONS537 3 years ago 3
I completely agree... People have completely underestimated the combination of DoW and CoH gameplay.
anthonyrun 3 years ago
Curious how he played annihilate rather than VP capture which offers a better experience.
I disagree with a great deal of his commentary as elitism, while simultaneously overlooking a great deal of the complexity inherent to the squad mechanics. while I would say that the game has been opened up to more people, certain aspects (grenades for example) are now more complex. Suppressive fire is a welcome addition.
I personally like the changes to the game, feels more like tabletop brought to life.
FlyByNight8 3 years ago
ok im kinda having an annoyance on this game. i played the coh demo (my computers video card was not that great a 6200 and now its broken so i got an 8400 gs hoping to be able to run it on my comp and to play this game atleast on medium with 40+ fps) but why is there no ragdoll for the units? i noticed when an ally in coh got blown up with a rocket launcher or nade it was twisting and turning in the air realisticly, in here its the same pre animated deaths like last game. wuts up with that?
Solphrae 3 years ago
amcarde2 i have to agree with you. I've been reading the forums since august, also i've read most of the beta forums and its amazing how much people are bashing this game. Because its not a SC or the original DoW. if you followed the game at all you would know that their was no base building and that they were changing a lot of the mechanics. So people who don't like it, don't play it just don't bash one of the better games out there
Billysunday3 3 years ago
You need Steam to download the beta. Wait untill Jan 28 if you can't download it now.
Leifthrasir 3 years ago
"If it isn't broken, then don't fix it!" Thats what Relic needs to learn. DoW is great they way it was.
Leifthrasir 3 years ago
DoW 2 isn't about "fixing" DoW. That's what everyone needs to learn. It's a new game, and with a new game comes some changes. If you want to play DoW, play DoW. If I'm not mistaken, the DoW 2 Beta doesn't delete DoW off of your computer.
I'm fairly amazed at the narrow minded bad attitudes that are judging this game so severely already.
amcarde2 3 years ago
This man is smart, you should all listen and learn.
zipper2k8 3 years ago

Solphrae 3 years ago
Oh, please, l'aux jeux video n'est pas Starcraft 2, asshole! Didn't know how to say "asshole" in French. Anywho, this game IS NOT STARCRAFT 2. Do units in Starcraft 2 hunker down behind cover? Does Starcraft 2 make aggressive playing a must? No. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.

I have the same feeling about the game as you, I liked the whole idea of a more tactical game but it just doesn't work really, and spam tactics still works... I'm still going to buy the game mostly for the singelplayer and coop.
smygdamp 3 years ago
IMO it is basically it is a step backwards from CoH; which frustrates me. I would have preferred CoH in space as some call it, which is basically using the same fantastic formula of CoH while adding new features to it like the wargear.
Though, try the beta for yourself and see, dont take my word for it. ;)
I still plan on getting it since they plan on adding the other races, maps, extras, via DLC & expansions.
KPMaker12 3 years ago
If you liked DoW, youll most likely love DoW2. If you love CoH as the spiritual successor to DoW then you might be very upset and disappointed like me. The game is still a lot of fun, but it is not a COH breaker.
DoW2 plays like a supped up DoW with some of the excellent mechanics found in CoH. The problem is the Devs designed this game around SP and not MP, so due to the extensive SP campaign they were limited on MP, which is where they let me down, but others may still love it.
KPMaker12 3 years ago
This guy means well, but does not give this game a fair assessment. The A.I. is pretty bad, so MP is where the action is and that is where this game can shine.
IMO the game is dumbed down from CoH, not DoW.
Lol, this game is not simpler than Soulstrom either; there are plenty of units to start out with (14-15 including heroes per each race, with very little overlapping in roles.)
This game is much better than DoW in that it does add many elements of strategic depth that was in CoH.
KPMaker12 3 years ago
ok perhaps making fleet of foot not decrease accuracy is a bit stupid.
spartoob 3 years ago
he keeps comparing it to soulstorm, and in my oppinion soul storm was the worst expansion of them all.
and repeated references to "dumbing it down" i think he means making it simpler to use, tactics still play a huge role in it it just doesnt require 4 hands and 20 fingers to hotkey manage and army.
spartoob 3 years ago 4
He's right, the game is very dumbed down. I played it for a while yesterday and the game has very little depth. It's not just a matter of being easier to control. You have one path of tech advancement and very limited unit choice; you don't build a base or base defenses. It was very disappointing to play. In my opinion they need to make the commander choice much more impacting and add in some new units specific to each commander.

ahumpedgoblin 3 years ago 2
There's just not enough close attention to detail here. I know the campaign is gonna be only blood ravens, BUT multiplayer and Relics statement of "We want multiplayer to be more accessible", well I don't feel they've done that statement any justice at all to be honest...there's so much missing, I can only hope they address it in downloadable content.
RobSef6 3 years ago
Also Inquisitors, the ability to distinguish the chapters apart from their colours, i.e: Space Wolves WILL look alot different from Blood Ravens, more hair, fangs, wolf pelts on armour etc
RobSef6 3 years ago
when you have a sequel you kind of expect it to knock the former on it's ass somewhat, sure it looks way better visually, I like what they've done with the emphasis on the Squad and not so much base building/resources etc, BUT I feel it's let down mainly on one thing: the units. In soulstorm you had Grey Knights, the best Chapter ever...wher are they here? Nowhere thats where!
RobSef6 3 years ago
I kinda agree with this chap, I found it a tad disappointing, the only way I can see it becoming a step forward, certainly features wise, is thru downloadable content.
RobSef6 3 years ago
i can't believe how much shit u chat on about, we all know there's less units and it's all about using the right units for the right job, you're slagging it off saying there's not a lot do but u say that you're gonna play it for ages, you're just a crap player, admit it!! loser.

dianuo 3 years ago
Oh, and yeah, relic have said that any changes made after this "beta" was released will not be in the release form of the game. So it seems that the only changes which will be made are balancing numbers.
ianuus 3 years ago
First, it isn't a "new form". He said it was similar to WC3 - the RPG element combined with RTS is not new at all. Second, it is the beta...but the release is in four weeks - doubt they're going to have time to gather, apply and test the feedback of the community. This isn't really a beta, it's more of a trial.
ianuus 3 years ago
why are the Fire Prisms so slow??
Papapop 3 years ago
it seems they took DoW1 and CoH and smashed them together. The Beat really seems lacking, like he said, a little dumbed down.
BUT. It is the beta! And beat's were made to be broken. It is a GOOD solid start. If relic can really build on this, they have a good game.
bmg50barrett 3 years ago
I don't really know too much about the process, but is there a chance that Relic will "smarten up" the game before full release? Is that what companies usually do, or is that wishful thinking?

Been playing the Beta myself. Have to say i am a little disappointed. Like you say it has been dumbed down a lot and all you need is the mouse...i also found it very slow paced.
There also a slight balance issue with some things. I found some things very easy to take down (e.g. Dreadnaughts) and some things quite overpowered (some hammer weilding ork unit, never looked at its name). Will play it a little more, but it wasn't what u was hoping for...(i miss base building too)

neverhoodyn 3 years ago
Nice commentary and I personally can't wait to try it out myself on the 28th when it goes public. I've gotta say that by playing 1v1 only, you're missing part of the point of the game.. The devs say that this game is supposed to be more team oriented and not too much about 1v1.
I can't comment on the dumbing down since I haven't tried it but I think it might relate to the team effort thing, so it's easier to pick up and the challenge will be working with others and coordinating your efforts.
Zinras 3 years ago
(cont.)
Zinras 3 years ago
I'm kinda sad to see people rip on this game, it's trying to innovate on something different. Dawn of war wasn't that strategic either. Sure you could outmicro or outmacro your opponnent but was there anything actually strategic about it? I'm going to use a story as an example. A few years ago when I first got into RTS I played Homeworld and loved it forgot about it and went on to other games like COH and I can do pretty well playing with top 50 players like WithoutNick and GermanSupreme.
ninjreapr 3 years ago
I came back to Homeworld 2 after completely having the strats from COH burned into my skull.
I could barely beat 2 easy computers, I was crap. People have gotten so used to using the same old strats, the same old modes that they've stopped accepting innovation, well that's not true, they've stopped taking in total innovation. They just take ideas from other games and pass them on to the next. This game is not meant to played 1v1, it's a tf2 style RTS.
ninjreapr 3 years ago
I fail to see the logic why this game is that bad, but that's just me.
ninjreapr 3 years ago
I see your point, i am still a little disappointed with the game. Its true that a lot of RTS aren't strategic enough it was all down to who could build the most in the shortest time. Even though they have tried to make something new and different...i still find it lacking.
Wallenquist 3 years ago
That's your opinion and you should stick by it.
To me it's an RTS to play with friends, preferably if they're competent.
ninjreapr 3 years ago 4
fleet of foot is probably on cooldown cuz it was too strong

While the game options are surely more bland than DoW or DoWpro you should try playing more skilled player than that.
