The best of the plans I've hears so far is a safety net using government clinics. People who can't afford health care would be able to go to these clinics and get help and it wouldn't mess with every body elses health insurance.
We have a system which works regarding healthcare. It is called Medicare: which should be available to all Americans. The insurance companies have robbed us blind. Ask your friends and neighbors. Everone knows someone who has no health insurance and can't afford to get sick. We could have a simple tax on all goods and services to pay for it. Medicare is socialized medicine and it works much more efficiently than what we have.

How can a government "compete" with the private market, when they can set prices at whatever they want and pay their workers with off the backs of the private sector? It's called parasitism.
When prices are set below the market level, the costs don't change, so losses are socialized. Plus, it screws up the accounting function, so nobody knows how much or what kind of service is needed to meet demand.
1st, the government passes LAWS restricting delivery of "letters" by other competing agencies such as FedEx and UPS; Letters must be "packaged". Yeah, real "competitive".
2nd, the USPS is a perennial LOSER of profit and can't keep it's self afloat without tax dollars and bail-outs.
3rd, FedEX and UPS are WINNERS and make profits, even under strict laws prohibiting letters being delivered.

I read the bill. It reins in the ins fees & rampant denial of claims, protects people w/pre-existing conditions, helps older people w COBRA payments if they might have to retire early due to illness. And it gives the uninsured insurance. The bill is not getting rid of private health ins, it's protecting consumers who get private health insurance.

I do not believe in a takeover of the health insurance industry. But I do believe that we have to try something, and this is the best plan 535 members of congress have come up with. It needs some tweaking for sure, but it's a good start.
In this ever increasing global economy, we will not be able to compete if our health care cost is not brought under control. Companies will not relocate to the states, and some here will go off shore. The higher our employment cost, the fewer jobs available in the states. We are risking our future to save a private industry that has not been able through the free market to hold cost down or cover all Americans. You cannot tell a company what they will or will not do if they don't write medical insurance anymore. This "reform" plan is not reform. It is a takeover of the healthcare and Medical insurance industry. The President is simply not being honest. He knows the reason rates have gone up is because Medicare is paying less and less for the care provided.
He wants single payer, government run healthcare. This bill is designed to bring that about. It is dishonesty to suggest otherwise.
It's the GOP, Joe, and their masters in the insurance industry who are not being honest. And sadly, it is everyday Americans like you (unless you're another blogger working on behalf of the insurance industry) who are acting as pawns in their whole sick strategy.

Come on, you know he is lying. He is on record as supporting single payer. He wants single payer. He also knows that a "public option", unless self-sustaining, will drive private companies out of the market completely. These are indisputable facts.

I agree that he may have wanted a single payer options at one time, and may still prefer that option, but he also knows that he will never get that through congress.

If the public option must be self-sustaining then it will pose no threat to private insurance companies. There is no way the government can cover everything and not charge huge premiums.
If the public option is tax payer funded, then it will eventually eliminate private health insurance. The question is can you trust what the President says.

Your question is not really on point. It is not a question of who I trust more or less. It is a question whether the market or the Congress can run the healthcare system better. We have a system which works regarding healthcare. It is called Medicare: which should be available to all Americans. The insurance companies have robbed us blind. Ask your friends and neighbors. Everone knows someone who has no health insurance and can't afford to get sick. We could have a simple tax on all goods and services to pay for it. Medicare is socialized medicine and it works much more efficiently than what we have.

Yes, there is a percentage of equity that you get to keep, so as you are not out on your ass, homeless and a further drag on the rest of the world. You would have enough to start over again, if you were able. If you have any other assets, you should use them. You can't expect someone else to pay for you while you get to keep extra assets. Obama is telling people exactly what the focus groups say they want to hear. The truth is that the government isn't efficient enough to create a public option that works (see current programs: Medicare, VA hospitals, Medicaid, Social Security, Post Office,...). Another truth is that the whole system doesn't need to be 'remade' just tweaked, fine tuned and improved.
Obama has shown that he is no different than Bush. He's going to push his agenda at all costs.

IF obama is true to his word, then he has just cut the fat from the bill and can get to work on the meat of it, which should help someone in your position, who pays insurance, but is under covered. FYI - My Uncle had spinal fusion surgery. He paid nearly $100,000 (mayo) and it didn't work for him. He is still in pain, and in a wheel chair much of the time.

How can a government "compete" with the private market, when they can set prices at whatever they want and pay their workers with off the backs of the private sector? It's called parasitism.
When prices are set below the market level, the costs don't change, so losses are socialized. Plus, it screws up the accounting function, so nobody knows how much or what kind of service is needed to meet demand.
Government competition is an oxymoron.

1st, the government passes LAWS restricting delivery of "letters" by other competing agencies such as FedEx and UPS; Letters must be "packaged". Yeah, real "competitive".
2nd, the USPS is a perennial LOSER of profit and can't keep it's self afloat without tax dollars and bail-outs.
3rd, FedEX and UPS are WINNERS and make profits, even under strict laws prohibiting letters being delivered.

Cigma CEO Ed Hanway's salary was 12.2MILLION last year - in other words he made 5,583 per week.
I read the bill. It reins in the ins fees & rampant denial of claims, protects people w/pre-existing conditions, helps older people w COBRA payments if they might have to retire early due to illness. And it gives the uninsured insurance. The bill is not getting rid of private health ins, it's protecting consumers who get private health insurance.

I have worked since I was 13 years old. Worked summers in a farmers field. I have been a cop for 21 yrs. and now I am in Afghanistan. I work for what I recieve. If you want health care get a job that covers you. I refuse to pay for every lazy good for nothing idiot that sits around all day. The goverment has no buisness in the health care buisness. I do not believe in a takeover of the health insurance industry. But I do believe that we have to try something, and this is the best plan 535 members of congress have come up with. It needs some tweaking for sure, but it's a good start.

In this ever increasing global economy, we will not be able to compete if our health care cost is not brought under control. Companies will not relocate to the states, and some here will go off shore. The higher our employment cost, the fewer jobs available in the states. We are risking our future to save a private industry that has not been able through the free market to hold cost down or cover all Americans. It's our future vs. the health insurance industry profits.

It is a takeover of the healthcare and Medical insurance industry. The President is simply not being honest. He knows the reason rates have gone up is because Medicare is paying less and less for the care provided.
He wants single payer, government run healthcare. This bill is designed to bring that about. It is dishonesty to suggest otherwise.

You cannot have both ways. If the problem is the insurance industry, then the President should argue for the total elimination of it. He is not because he knows they are NOT the problem. The problem is the federal government not pay the cost of Medicare patients. He knows that it is going broke unless he takes over healthcare totally. That is the truth and the END of the Story.

He knows that eliminating the health care insurance industry would never pass congress, would be a far larger undertaking for the govt in terms of the transition, loss of jobs, stockholders in that industry, etc. But without a govt option, those who cannot afford insurance today still cannot afford insurance. The public option is a compromise.

If the public option must be self-sustaining then it will pose no threat to private insurance companies. There is no way the government can cover everything and not charge huge premiums.
If the public option is tax payer funded, then it will eventually eliminate private health insurance. The question is can you trust what the President says.

History has demonstrated that capitalism produces the best outcomes for the greatest number of people. The best become the best because they are rewarded with a greater income. Fix medicaid. Divert some of the trillion he is spending on his voting block to medicaid. But we ought not to try to force price controls which has not worked and is the reason medicaid has failed to date. We should not have a public plan that is designed to drive private insurance out of business leaving just the government controlled system that will make no one happy! The trillion he signed into law for so called stimulus. Most of that money is in a general slush fund the administration can earmak to whatever they want to spend it on. Another words that money is not required to be spent on anything in particular. Obama shows no indication any of that trillion will be spent on medicaid since he is so concerned about healthcare. Instead the money spent so far has gone to the auto industry and some public works projects both heavily unionized with Obama voters.
