Don't give up on the oak slab. You can bore it out with Spade bits in extensions and insert square tubing for strength and use polyurethane glue to keep the tubing in place as it dries. There is some salvation for the small boxes as well, but maybe too time consuming.

I am guessing that it was the topside of the slab you were showing?...well you can always mix up some colored epoxy and pour it in the crevice to make it look like a natural fissure. Keep it lower that the finished surface.
