What is special about rugby union are the traditions: that you clap your opposition off the field, that you always shake their hand - and you buy them a beer after the game (although the professionals don't do a lot of buying). its pretty much the same guys..NFL hits with alot more force than rugby but an NFL player will only tackle an average of 6 times while rugby averages 18 times

Rugby is the true football (the word football originally is designed to another sport in everywhere in the world, soccer, American league used it to make the term "American Football") in the way it was invented, anything else is "American Football". Soccer is a american born brand. Football as it is, was a term invented in 1880 (Correct me if I'm wrong) to a sport played only by foot. What you really play is American Custom made Rugby. By the way I preffer Rugby...needless to say why.
I have played both, and there are huge differences
Football - More pain because of pads (fingers being smashed/ mangled, huge collisions, all around bigger impacts), and requires explosion.
Rugby - Less pain, tackling feels...softer (hitting a body with no pads is actually a very soft feeling compared to footall), but the face tends to get hit a lot (not that big a deal tho) but endurance aspect is brutal. Players must be far more versatile.

Many of those tackles you talk about are ILLEGAL. And not everyone is a hard hitting player. Some are good form tacklers while others are big hitters. I think if you were to put Rugby players in pads and throw them out in the field vs a real team, they would get destroyed. I dont mean in score, I mean in the physical aspect of it. Why? They do take break after a few seconds but not all plays are small. 20 yard burst at 100%, 60 yard burst at 100%, 2 yards, 1 yard, -3 its all at 100%. Even though they wear pads, players still break bones, concussions, bleed, broken noses and other injuries. The pads just allow a high level of play while reducing possible injury. Also, of course an "avarage" rugby player is afster and more nimble. we have 300-350 lb linemen making BLOCKS. So are decleater pancake blocks too.

We don't wear helmets, padding doesn't mean anything. We play 80, gridiron 60, no blockers when you have the ball in rugby, goal kicking isn't right in front of the goal posts, (kickers can kick the ball from up to 60m or 65yards). Rugby players play BOTH offense AND defense!! Most payed? pfft passion for the game! Thats why rugby's the best!! ;D

I have played both, and there are huge differences
Football - More pain because of pads (fingers being smashed/ mangled, huge collisions, all around bigger impacts), and requires explosion.
Rugby - Less pain, tackling feels...softer (hitting a body with no pads is actually a very soft feeling compared to footall), but the face tends to get hit a lot (not that big a deal tho) but endurance aspect is brutal. Players must be far more versatile.
I like football cuz of the big hits, but its close

Ive played both myself albeit in a rugby heavy country ( used to live in new zealand) , you're not wrong about the endurance, especialy if you play in the forwards. Getting in and clearing out the tackles ect, it's fucking hard work. Especialy if you get stomped ( perfectly legal as you know)
You're right about the gridiron ( as we call it here) hits. The helmet ect gets used as a battering ram, the hits are hard not doubt.

Many of those tackles you talk about are ILLEGAL. And not everyone is a hard hitting player. Some are good form tacklers while others are big hitters. I think if you were to put Rugby players in pads and throw them out in the field vs a real team, they would get destroyed. I dont mean in score, I mean in the physical aspect of it. Why? Because they will all get ran over and decleated off blocks.

They do take break after a few seconds but not all plays are small. 20 yard burst at 100%, 60 yard burst at 100%, 2 yards, 1 yard, -3 its all at 100%. Even though they wear pads, players still break bones, concussions, bleed, broken noses and other injuries. The pads just allow a high level of play while reducing possible injury. Also, of course an "avarage" rugby player is afster and more nimble. we have 300-350 lb linemen making BLOCKS. So are decleater pancake blocks too.

@RaiderzGuru In rugby we don't sit on the bench after a turnover or score, and we can only sub off once so most players play the whole 80 minutes! We don't wear helmets, padding doesn't mean anything. We play 80, gridiron 60, no blockers when you have the ball in rugby, goal kicking isn't right in front of the goal posts, (kickers can kick the ball from up to 60m or 65yards). Rugby players play BOTH offense AND defense!! Most payed? pfft passion for the game! Thats why rugby's the best!! ;D

The legal tackles usually dont hurt as much. its more like wrap and twist. some illegal tackles hurt i once did a high-low tackle and ended up landing on my face after the tackle. i think the only reason that some of the nice rugby tackles are illegal are because players have to end up lasting 80 mins. since its not like football where you have to stop after every tackle.

I've watched 16 League matches (Eng/AU), sometimes with "Rugby loving" friends, and there is NOWHERE near the contact and collisions you find in NCAA and NFL games, which they acknowlege. @petnzme01 The difference between us, aside from level of intellect, is that I've actually taken time and effort to learn about Rugby from fans, and from watching. I like Rugby very much, and wish it were more popular here. It suits American tastes far better than Soccer. Most Americans Couldn't care less if AF was played outside of the US. /watch?v=c64BBhee9dI . However, as more ppl learn the rules and strategy, it is spreading, even to AU & NZ (Iron Blacks).
