Platform height alterations that have never been done, since the Piccadilly line started operations in that area - the Heathrow Branch up to Hatton Cross I think, (before airport extension), was run by the larger trains of the District Line. The shape of the deep level stock in the head area by the doors, is the main excuse for this being as it is I reckon - hitting ones head when stepping out and up, or down and in, is quite hard to do because of the curved shape.
They should fix that, I mean in NYC their are large spaces between the train and platform but they add a piece of wood to close that gap. In this situation you can't do that because that is not a gap it is more like a ledge. I wonder how women with their baby carriages are supposed clear that in time before the doors close up on them?
My guess is the that the people using the tube, in London, are accustomed to the physical layout and know to step over the gap. As far as baby carriages, I've seen people carefully lift each set of wheels as they pass over the gap.
Why should I MIND the gap.... and am I reminded of it Aggresively.... Can't I just REMEMBER the gap? Like as I was learned on how to board a train when I was 3?
Safety messages on the street are for tourists, because the minute they walk out of waterloo station they forget that we drive on the correct side of the road over here.
Great video!! I visited London last September and enjoyed hearing the charming auto-voices reminding me to "mind the gap"! I bought a t shirt with MTG written on it. But when I wear it no one gets it unless they've visited London ; )
"Mind the Gap" and London's "tube" (subway system) are very popular subjects that interest me and others around the world. If you ever get to London I suggest you try it out - the tube is very convenient!
You are lucky to be able to afford living in London! Many of us, in the Western United States, are fascinated with London's subway system so I guess that's pretty much the point of this video. Plus, "Mind the Gap" is one of those interesting British phrases we never hear around these parts!
yeah that's because deep-level stock (like the one in the video) and sub surface stock (the taller trains with higher doorways) use the platforms so there has to be a compromise between the two.
Strange. I don't recall ever stepping up or down when entering a train at the many stations we used, including Piccadilly. I guess at this particular platform you really do need to "Mind the Gap!" Really funny.
My favorite line is Piccadilly Line :-D

sorry, but either you didn't understand the comment "2 people fell down the gap" or your answer isn't funny at all.

@zeekzilch Hammersmith station? Because it is an interchange with the H&C line, also it is ground level and not like KCSP.

@dontwalkhand we have 'Watch the Gap' all over NY, not just the City; too many elderly people fell into the gaps.

you probably didnt see the big gaps then. they are not at all stations or not even at all doors but some of them ARE big.
catepilarr 11 months ago
@Daikenboy The train is deep level stock. The platform is designed to accommodate sub-surface (the larger type of tube train).
