No offence to you mate. But I get stupid questions almost every week from people who dont read the text or bother to watch the entire series of parts. The bets thing to do is not watch a part in the middle, but start from the beginning. Sorry if I pissed you off...but honestly...it pisses me off when others dont bother to check things beofr asking questions.
I have even had people ask me "where can I get one of them?" when watching my videos on my Katanas....If they are smart enough to use the net and find videos on YT, then they are smart enough to find a store near them where they can buy teh product themselves...but no. They want me to do all the work FOR them.
The knife was a custom job for a collector. I can make more but it wont be with an Antler handle as I hate working with thst stuff. It stinks the house out for days. New designs would be with a nornal handle.
But for a useful knife you need a straight cutting edge. With the design making its way down to the edge...it will still cut. But to sharpen it you need to use a small round or half-round file. That will do it...but it will take you a couple of hours as you need to do each individual groove.
@RDPproject ya i was thinking that after i posted much more pleasing to the eye but not practical maintenance or use. how much do these run and do you do customer designs.

who do you use for heat treating?
WesMerc 3 months ago
@WesMerc
An australian company. I can give you their name...but there are tons of them in the usa so it would be cheaper for you to have it done over there.

if you brought the design all the way down to the edge like flint is. you would probably get a serrated affect. nice job man. do you sell these.

My original design is like that.
But for a useful knife you need a straight cutting edge. With the design making its way down to the edge...it will still cut. But to sharpen it you need to use a small round or half-round file. That will do it...but it will take you a couple of hours as you need to do each individual groove.
Yes I do sell these.

Nice one Rob, What a shame that you'll have to go through all the polishing after the heat treat :)

I don't know how to put 5 stars on that new layout of youtube's but I REALLY like the design that way. I'll answer your mail in a moment.
Great great work!! Can't wait to see the handle. Have you received my mail about the sheath ?

Man, that looks sweet. Crap Rob, I can't remember for the life of me what kind of steel you said you were using for this...O-1?
Looks fantastic, my man.
elpidi0526 1 year ago
@elpidi0526
No Matt.
Because of the shape of the blade...(all the curves)
I chose to use 440C. If it was carbon steel, im just concerned that
there could be a moisture build up in the depressions.
With 440C you dont have to worry about that to much I guess.
I will be trying other steels in the future for this particular design.
(Yes..i'll be making more of them)
RDPproject 1 year ago
very nice outcome...Is that a makers stamp near tang or is that etching/scribing?
Do you know whats involved in the heat treatment or is it the regular... glow red- cool down fast..? Keen to see handle fitted... keep us posted
faranglaw 1 year ago
@faranglaw
Good spot BJ. Yes, its my makers mark. It was stanped into the steel
befor it was polished. I wanted to keep the area flat for the stamp. It would not have worked on the Flint pattern...way to curvy.
I knida know about the ehat treatment...but only the basic's. The company that does it for me do Cryo-heat treatments.
But not for this knife as its 440C..not carbon steel.
The handle fitting will be in part 5 once its returned from heat treatment.
