  • I would choose " Rubys arms " as my funeral music..... This is great though.....

  • Good night, Mr. Waits. Thanks for the lullaby.

  • The lyrics of this song remind me so much of Desolation Row by Bob Dylan. Both amazing songs and artists. Look up Desolation Row if you like this one.

  • You have to be touched by genius to write a song as beautiful as this.

  • @chillstylergirl88 i hope so. that would make him even more fabulous. :)

  • @MrUnidyne

    Time..the Perfect Epitaph..

    .Matilda alongside means 'Powerful Battler'...

    Sits so well.

  • "Pay the fiddler off 'till I come back again".

I have quoted lines from this song to women with whom I lay in bed.

In those moments we knew something special.

  • @gefan3 Haha your weird

  • Though the song isn't about it, has anybody else thought about this song in reference to The Doctor? Fits amusingly well.

  • This song is about Southern Illinois. Look at a map, google Centralia Orphans, and the fairmont racetrack records for the racehorse Harlow, it was definitely "smart money". There are no storms like there are no storms like those in that region. The ICG railroad and City of New Orleans run right through. To all those who wonder... (;

  • years shrink in honor of greatness.

  • in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king

  • 4 people have no soul

  • 61 years young today - thanks for all the TIME and the all the other great music you slung our way - we are forever indebted to you Maestro!

  • @bigtiny200 are you insane? How dare you!

  • @cinedores whose to say we're not there?

  • why do people want songs played when they are dead? your not there

  • he writes a real goddamn good lyrics

    he is a genius

  • i love it

  • some of the most beautiful instrumentation on this. Toy piano accordion gorgeous. Must buy for my collection: )

  • Tori Amos brings this song to life

  • @bigtiny200 and Tom don't ?

  • One man is the first to put a foot on the moon, another becomes the president of USA, one ends apartheid and yet another sings a song.

  • All liriks of XX century in one man! Genius Tom Weits !!!

  • This song makes me fall in love with Tom Waits every time I hear it. So so beautiful.

  • I once tried to introduce Tom Waits to my sister, but she told me afterwards (quote) "he sounds like a drunken Louis Armstrong" (end quote) he sounded like (quote)

Some people just don't appreciate quality music.

  • @gribae She was right. But that's what makes him great; such a raw, honest feel.

  • @gribae Ive had same problem. But admit it, you feel luckier to be able to hear the magic when others can't :D

  • MrUnidyne, doesn't sound strange at all - would make a beautiful send off. The song and the performance are both heartfelt masterpieces.

  • "The greatest songwriter of his generation"..............and Bob Dylan said that!

  • more soul than any other voice in music

  • Maybe I should just have a hobo pee in some of them instead...hmm.

  • Well they're gonna' play "Pasties and a G String" at my funeral. Then everyone will throw balloons full of paint & lemon juice at each other. The great thing is the juice will be dyed, so they won't know what is what and when someone gets a balloon in the face HAHAHAHAHHA.

  • My fiance and I are dancing to this song for our first dance at our wedding... It's strange, and doesn't make sense but we both love it, and we sing it to each other when we've had to much to drink lol :)

  • I cry...

  • my roommate asked me who i would hang out with if i had just one day left to live (he was pretty high). i spoke "second would totally be regis philbin... but...FIRST would be tom waits". we then smoked our faces off with the sounds of tom waits in the backround.

  • Loved the song ! Thank you !

    Tec

  • Hats off, Tom. Hats off.

  • o7 salute mr waits.

  • 3:50 shadows collide with people. i hear you man i hear you.

    WAKE UP...

  • I know it sounds strange, but I want this song played at my funeral.

  • Naaaa. that isn't strange. What I want played is" Heart Attack and Vine". How could you forget someone with that tune?

  • I always visualized "Heart Attack and Vine" with burlesque dancers. Now THAT would be a send off!

  • @MrUnidyne People will be depressed enough at your funeral, and you want to make them even more depressed?

Well, of all the songs you could choose, I suppose "Time" is a far better choice than "Poor Edward"! - that one would have everyone running for the razors.

  • @MrUnidyne The day a Tom Waits fan says something strange is the day birds crows stop flying over graveyards.

  • @MrUnidyne me too... beautiful.

  • @MrUnidyne me too

  • @MrUnidyne I don't want a funeral

  • @MrUnidyne That doesn't sound wierd at all, to me.

  • @MrUnidyne

that doesnt sound strange at all....that sounds....right.

  • @MrUnidyne i get you

  • @MrUnidyne whoa. me too! yes, morbid-----kind of nice to know that someone else thinks like me.

  • @MrUnidyne

Great idea!!! I will do myself, if you enable...

  • @MrUnidyne me too...

  • @MrUnidyne strange? totally not

  • jesus, this is too beautyfull... Its' like we all are damned to do mistakes until it's time

  • What I wouldn't give to just have a cup of coffee with this genius. In just ten minutes, I could probably learn ages of wisdom...but then, I guess that's what the website's for. Hats off, Mr. Waits.

  • Just bloody gorgeous.

  • He has given us a gift.

  • Great song, pure poetry

  • What an amazing song. Such poetry about our warring ways and our inability to learn from the past. The kiss of death on a dying soldier's lips. Nothing left for Jesus down here ...with the imagery of hammers and nails ... Mathilda, the song that accompanied soldiers into war ... Fantastic lyrics. Great song.

  • yes, it`s time ! It`s time to forget a love, deep emotions. But is it possible when Waits is singing? His music is the only what be left with a big love of my life!

  • oh...my...sweet...jesus.

    this man.

    rocks.

  • Tom is one of my friends. Thanks for the precious voice and delicate music.

  • if that's true, then you are fortunate, and I must admit a degree of envy. Selah.

  • A freakin' genius. Nobody is like him. Nobody. What an original.

  • Tom Waits is unique. One of the greatest artists of our time.

  • Maestro, maestro...

    Joder, como me haces disfrutar....

  • This is without a doubt the most beautiful version I ever heard of this song. :)

  • I love Tom!!!

  • Younger years listening to 'Rain dogs', thanks for this beautiful song.

  • cant get enough of him, hes a genius

  • Everything But the Girl's version of "Downtown Train" is passable, but Rod Stewart did the song absolutely no justice!

  • love this man

  • Genius

  • brodycomic is dead on. Natalie Merchant came close on "I Think that I just Fell..."but nobody can cover Waits...Keep listening.

  • johnny cash does "down there by the train" its full justice, but yeah, no, nobody and nothing else,

  • yeah cash is the only one who can get close

  • I was with you on the Joe Cocker thing, but Rod Stewart's cover of Downtown Train is one of the most artless pieces of crap in music history.

  • He said he makes up songs "like kids do in schoolyards". That's it. There's poetry in everyone. After that, hard hard work.

  • Stupendo...

  • Tom Waits' voice is an integral part of the songs. They just don't work when other people sing them.

And he is a master when it comes to singing emotion.

  • I prefere this one

  • yup yup

  • It's more than the voice, you have to go over that. It's the soul, the intrepretation and most of all the lyrics. It,s like someone telling you an incredible story full of heart...it's more than the voice...

  • Cheers hunters116! Tori's version is beautiful, as always. But he definitely brings something unique to this...I mean, he wrote it. It's a great song.

  • "And Mathilda asks the sailors, are those dreams or are those prayers..."

    I love this man.

  • same here!

  • So evocative. Love it!

  • "And the things you can't remember

Tell the things you can't forget"

    Wow, superb song.

  • perfect

  • So powerful and simple, pure genius. Tom Waits is an exceptional talent.

  • time

    time

    time

all the credit to Waits, love him

  • Always wondered if by "It's time that you love" does he mean TIME is the object of the love, or is it TIME for the subject to love someone? The world may never know, but that's the beauty of Tom Waits!

  • You are absolutely right.

  • check out the "letterman" performance...

  • brilliant song writer and performer... really captures the feeling of the street. a true musician.. puts the hip hop idiots who think they are 'street" to shame.... any one can cuss and grab themselves...but only a musician can do a song like this....

  • his music has that nice touch of romantic weltschmertz that is in the same time so beautiful and yet so painful. Tom is one of the greatest musicians.

  • i hope i hear this as i take my last breath. ill pass away as a very happy man . he has seriously touched my soul.

  • Wow! I love what you said eimearann, I feel the same way. I adore Tom, I travel far to see him in concert. There is no one else like him!!

  • same here.....blessed by the stars !

  • One of my favourite Tom Waits songs. Check my cover version!

  • And such a great performance too. Big Time is such a great show.

  • Such a great song.

  • One of my favorites by Tom. Great song!

  • The best performance of the best song ever written. Tom's hymn for what it means to be human. It'll break me 'til I die.

  • He's giving off heat to the people in the cold.

  • That is the most wonderful thing I have heard in a long time. Tom Waits would be proud.
