The lyrics of this song remind me so much of Desolation Row by Bob Dylan. Both amazing songs and artists. Look up Desolation Row if you like this one.
This song is about Southern Illinois. Look at a map, google Centralia Orphans, and the fairmont racetrack records for the racehorse Harlow, it was definitely "smart money". There are no storms like there are no storms like those in that region. The ICG railroad and City of New Orleans run right through. To all those who wonder... (;
I once tried to introduce Tom Waits to my sister, but she told me afterwards (quote) "he sounds like a drunken Louis Armstrong" (end quote) he sounded like (quote)
Well they're gonna' play "Pasties and a G String" at my funeral. Then everyone will throw balloons full of paint & lemon juice at each other. The great thing is the juice will be dyed, so they won't know what is what and when someone gets a balloon in the face HAHAHAHAHHA.
My fiance and I are dancing to this song for our first dance at our wedding... It's strange, and doesn't make sense but we both love it, and we sing it to each other when we've had to much to drink lol :)
my roommate asked me who i would hang out with if i had just one day left to live (he was pretty high). i spoke "second would totally be regis philbin... but...FIRST would be tom waits". we then smoked our faces off with the sounds of tom waits in the backround.
@MrUnidyne People will be depressed enough at your funeral, and you want to make them even more depressed?
Well, of all the songs you could choose, I suppose "Time" is a far better choice than "Poor Edward"! - that one would have everyone running for the razors.
What I wouldn't give to just have a cup of coffee with this genius. In just ten minutes, I could probably learn ages of wisdom...but then, I guess that's what the website's for. Hats off, Mr. Waits.
What an amazing song. Such poetry about our warring ways and our inability to learn from the past. The kiss of death on a dying soldier's lips. Nothing left for Jesus down here ...with the imagery of hammers and nails ... Mathilda, the song that accompanied soldiers into war ... Fantastic lyrics. Great song.
yes, it`s time ! It`s time to forget a love, deep emotions. But is it possible when Waits is singing? His music is the only what be left with a big love of my life!
My name is Lonna Marie and if you like this song you might find some of my music equally intriguing. I'm very influenced by Sara Bareillis, Lily Allen, Ingrid Michaelson and other artists of their nature. If you have a moment, visit my page and take a listen! Let me know what you think :) Thanks for taking the time and hope you can find something to your liking!
It's more than the voice, you have to go over that. It's the soul, the intrepretation and most of all the lyrics. It,s like someone telling you an incredible story full of heart...it's more than the voice...
Cheers hunters116! Tori's version is beautiful, as always. But he definitely brings something unique to this...I mean, he wrote it. It's a great song.
Always wondered if by "It's time that you love" does he mean TIME is the object of the love, or is it TIME for the subject to love someone? The world may never know, but that's the beauty of Tom Waits!
brilliant song writer and performer... really captures the feeling of the street. a true musician.. puts the hip hop idiots who think they are 'street" to shame.... any one can cuss and grab themselves...but only a musician can do a song like this....
his music has that nice touch of romantic weltschmertz that is in the same time so beautiful and yet so painful. Tom is one of the greatest musicians.
I would choose " Rubys arms " as my funeral music..... This is great though.....

Though the song isn't about it, has anybody else thought about this song in reference to The Doctor? Fits amusingly well.
