He may SAY he'd take it all back for a normal life, but he has no idea what he's agreeing to.
Enjoy it, Donnie. You've got what millions would kill for, and many die without. Appreciate all the good you have.
@SpectreWriter - Not at all true! Donny and his family were bankrupted (due to dishonest management) sometime around the mid to late 1980's (not sure of the time). They had to go back to work, on the road, because they refused to declare bankruptcy. So, they DO know what it's like to have to truly work for a living. Great interview! I have always admired Donny; in fact, it was because of Donny and Marie and Donny's wife Debbie (and all the Osmonds) that I joined the LDS Church. I remember watching them on TV and being so impressed that they didn't use alcohol or drugs or swear, and I wanted to know what was behind their beliefs. I investigated, pondered and prayed, and was baptised a Mormon. That was over 30 years ago! Thank you Donny and all the Osmonds.

Sacrifice is part of life, no matter what you choose to do. And the Osmond's all say they chose entertainment as what they wanted to do. "Father and Mother" Osmond were the adult parents that guided them through it. I was there for some of their shows in the 70's and backstage (we knew family members) and their parents were always kind and wonderful to those kids. They kept them on the straight path, good for them. The family is truly a national treasure - God Bless them always.
Nobody has a perfect life, so showbiz or not, the endearing thing in my mind, about Donny and all of the siblings, is their commitment to never compromise their standards and values and to stay true to their beliefs. That is so much more valuable than anything they did or didn't do as performers. I think the stupid (they ARE) press was very hard on them and what do they know about real talent anyway. @cosg9531 I sort of agree with you, however Piers must be doing something right if Donny can trust him enough to let his guard down. Look at this interview again. Yes I think Piers is an arsehole however he is a very competent individual.

How the hell would this guy know if it would have been an easier life? Does he have any idea how many people out here in the so-called "normal" llife have all of the difficulties, and none of the prosperity and adulation, that these people had the priviledge of enjoying? How can this guy be so damn presumptuous?
Donny is one of the most enduring, pleasure-giving performers there is. Remarkably talented, very photogenic, extraordinarily tough to be sucessful in such a demanding profession, and he has an attitude that I perceive to be one of great positive energy. I had no idea that he would have preferred a more normal childhood and life. He seems so genuinely happy when he is performing. This interview was quite revealing, and quite moving.
I know that Donny would have been happier without the show buisness but I for one am glad he got into show buisness because even tho some of us osmond fans were picked on for loving the osmonds it was worth every second of it I would have never turned my back on them.
So Sad that he wanted to just play in the sandbox. Ans we all loved and still love him. And wish we had his life. Grass is alway's greener as they say. Love you forever Donny.
I grew up loving Donny, the same age as him, but until now, hearing this interview with Piers, I never gave any thought to what it was like for him growing up. I know I had my own childhood issues that have kept me under the care of a shrink for quite a few years now, but I can only imagine by Donny's reaction and the tears welling up, what his childhood must have truly been like. I know his parents were quite strict with the kids and like myself, they didn't have an "average" childhood. How sad
I just want to give Donny a great big hug. Nobody has had a perfect life. I cannot image my life without the Osmonds in it. There music was a big part ofmy growing up like many young girls back then I had and still to this day have an enourmous crush on him. He is such a genuine, warming, talented and very loving person. I love his devotion to his family and his fans. Donny you will always be my "Puppy Love!"
As a life long Osmond fan, a bit older than Donny...I've always known this about him. He may have loved singing for his fans; he may have loved entertaining for his fans, but he has ALWAYS stried to be as 'normal' as the industry would allow him to be. I've always loved him (had...HAVE a tremendous crush on him) and have always respected him, not only as a performer, but as a human being.
I don't care what they or anyone else says....Their father was abusive. He wanted them to be seccessful in order for him to be successful. And because they were raise to never question authority no one stood up to the father. Michael Jackson and the Jacksons were in almost the same situation.
Gotta love him and feel for him. Hearing how difficult life was for him... makes me appreciate and love him all the more for it... every single Osmond!
He shouldn't have said that. I grew up listen & loved the Osmond, I saw them perform live & now he is saying he which he didn't have gone down that road? Talking about stealling my childhoods memories away. Shall I now feel bad when I hear Young Love ect..this is weird. Mix feelings about this. The bottomline is, Life is hard on everybody, more on some, we play those cards we're been giving here in this life. When Donny sings I'm a teenager again thats a rare gift to have. B proud of that Donny
Steaing your memories? What about HIS memories? Donny didn't and doesn't owe you anything. He's a human being, and he's entitled to his own happiness. I think it's interesting in light of all that the Osmonds have done and achieved over the years, he says that he and all his siblings would trade that for a normal life. Guess the grass isn't always as green as we might imagine it is on that other side of the fence. I wish him and his family all the best. Love you, Donny!
I have a great deal more respect for the man now, hearing this interview....I am the same age as Mr. Osmond, and of course male kids of my generation hated the Osmonds...secretly I was jealous of his talent, and his looks.....
I like joewally11 grew up on "the otherside of the moutain" from Donny and his family. I always looked up to him as I was growing up and even now. I figured if he could keep the faith and keep fighting despite being in the limelight then me being a nobody could do the same. He has always been and forever will be an inspiration to me. I have great respect for him and the struggles he's faced with such great determination. I've never met the man but I hope to someday its my lifelong dream.
Doesn't matter.. I still LOVE Donny Osmond.. I met them befre they were STARS singing in a Wonder World Parking Lot in Las Vegas, NV.... Donny was and Is and always will have a special place in my heart!
God Bless the Osmonds. In the late 70's-80's people always compared the Osmonds with the Jacksons and the Jackson's were always "cooler". Now looking back, seeing how this family still has each other and nothing weird came out of this family, I'd rather be an Osmond any day!!!! Lots of emotion in this interview. It makes you count your blessings for the lives WE Have. I saw Donny in Joseph and my God, did he earn the respect of all who heard him perform. WOW, STILL a great singer, and person!
It's tough both ways. Many people living normal lives would gladly bear the burden of showbiz for the fame and success. And of course the flip side is that
many with that success would love to have time for a normal life. But regardless,I'm happy for Donny and the physical and mental strength he had to get through everything I will say...he looks great and healthy even now
That was really sad, especially the part about his Dad finding the letter, good grief, it sounds so harsh, and also how upset he got over the idea that he could have had a normal life. That made me cry.
Sad. The Osmond brothers & Marie didn't get to choose how they wanted to live out their lives. Children will fantasize & make their own decisions as to what they want to be when they grow up. The Osmonds never got that chance. They were dictated to what they were going to be. It must have been stifling for them. Their freedom was taken away.
Whatever happens in childhood, good or bad, effects you as an adult. It never goes away.
It is so heartbreaking when Piers asks if he would go back and lead a life with no celebrity status and lead a "normal" life and he says yeah. Could you imagine a life without that man?
Great words from Andy Williams...lol (he'll reinvent himself and play a grandpa). Can we just go ahead and clone Donny already??? I've met him twice and had my pic with him cheek to cheek and he is every bit as REAL as he seems on camera. One observation I made...my TEETH are actually BIGGER than his! Now how is that possible?? :D
Pierce's last comment about singing puppy love is so insensitive and idiotic it is hard to believe he said it. I thought he was above that type of jibe, but clearly not.
Interesting post...I grew up on the "other side of the mountain" and am 1 day older than Donny. I always looked at him as the young man I wanted to be...polar opposites. I looked at him as me...perfected. Strange, I know but my point is that he has continued to take the high road regardless of the consequences and I have great respect for him for doing that. You can really tell he has come out of his shell and is comfortable in his skin now. The most underated singer in the history of music!
old george was a fucking tyrant, donny called it abuse, the kids were terrified of him he screwed them up personaly and finacially.watch the show being an osmond.I hope george got his when he died just how much pain and suffering he caused this family is mindboggling treating a 6 year old like that borders on sadistic.

I am so sick of these celebrities who gripe about how sad lonely they are from being so successful. It is us working people who are barely making it who pay for these celebrities life styles that they are so depressed over! If we didn't go to their concerts and watch their tv shows and buy their music they wouldnt have all the success and fortune that makes them so sad. How about saving someones home and then maybe you wouldn't have time to sit around thinking about your terrible childhood.
This story is heart breaking. I love Donny so much, I hate that he has memories so bad when he was young. I never knew. I will always love you donny!!!!
wow...even celebrities hurt; thank you for sharing your life with us, Donny. You have blessed us with your honesty, integrity, music, charm and just being you!
Donny! you and your family have bought so much Joy! to so many. It hurts to see you cry. So happy for you, that you have found contentment. Love alway's sister G xxx
While I certainly would never wish Donny any pain in his life, I for one am glad that his life has followed the path that he is on now. He brought the light of the Gospel into my life and many others as well. I couldn't ever express the gratitude that I feel to him for that blessing in my life. How sad I would be, not to have the wonderful man I married be my eternal companion.
I met Olive and George and Jimmy when George was in the hospital for a short stay many years ago. Seeing this spot reminds me of the many sacrifices this family has made to entertain us once they became famous. Then there was no looking back at a "normal" life. Would there be a life of "Donny the electrician" after Osmondmania? I remember when my cousin Serina went out with Donny for a bit...I prayed they would work out, but the Lord had Donny's life partner on his radar...God Bless you.
What an amazing family! With their ups and downs, they remained together, had faith in God, and strong family values. What a contrast to today's "idols". Thank you for the memories and all you gave. God bless.
Never will we understand the hurt he felt. I am so porud of him and would never reject him. He is the best and such an inspiration. You ARE a fighter Donny - and a winner!!!
Donny i am as all your fans we never thought of you for that we are all sorry but thank you also we have and will always love you i and many look up to you and all your family
I ask myself, Donny what have we done to you, your brothers, and even to Marie? Like Elvis the pressures of "our love" comes with a high price at times. I love you, and you're in my heart always.
Having grown chronogically "through the years" with the amazing Osmonds, I have personally witnessed every high and low, and the sometimes tremendous public scrutiny that this family has had to endure, and that there is a private as well as a public face to each of them, and that they have challenges and emotions as we all do. With idol worship rampant, th Osmonds have let their deep religious convictions keep them strong. We see what it has done to such people as Britney and Michael Jackson.
Shit !!! .. i just wanted to hug him. What pice for fame huh? .... too high a price in my opinion
It almost seems to me that the borthers went to work... all from a very young age to pay the families keep, trouble is they had to sacrifice their childhood.... thats wrong on so many levels
that was so sad - to learn that he would have swapped it for 'normality'...he has a depth that some of the commentators on here couldn't even understand if they tried. He has been loyal and loved family and sacrificed.
The only thing I'd say is; he still would have had to work very hard in something, and been 'owned' by that work/boss in a way, in order to support his family in a comfortable lifestyle, if he didn't have the money he has made in showbusiness.

Sometimes I find it more sad when I see or hear a man cry because it's like rare to ever see that. When girls cry, it's nothing new but when it comes to a guy and you see them cry, it's heartbreaking to me. Donny is amazing in everything he does. I might not be a huge fan of his but I still think he's really incredible.
donny's autobiography made me cry. all that adoration followed by all that rejection really messed with him. he deserves a medal for not going completely bonkers.
yes, interesting parallel universe compared to his contemporary Michael Jackson, who was also torn from his infancy and thrown into international spotlight and grueling tour schedules - and who actually did go bonkers.
(1 of 3) "And this above all to thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to anyone." Yes, this is Shakespeare, from Hamlet, Act I, Scene III. In short, a person must be true to themselves, a person must follow their heart, if they don't I think it can cause irreparable harm.
(2 of 3) Donny was forced to do something no "child" should have to do, he had to act like an adult when he was only a child with a child's emotions and makeup. Kids need to have a childhood but he didn't. Children aren't meant to take on "adult" duties and when they do I think it robs them of something they vitally need to become a whole and healthy person. I can understand why parents in the entertainment business don't want their children to follow them into it.
(3 of 3) It sounds like Donny has been able to take care of himself enough to stay sane. He seems to be more healthy emotionally but I'm sure he has suffered untold agony and pain and he has much trouble holding back the emotion when he thinks about his past. I bet he sure learned some things too and will treat his son differently than he was treated. God bless you Donny and thanks for the wonderful years of entertainment you gave us.
Yes, a difficult life indeed. Everything he does is public. His life is an open book for people to comment on. No privacy, people loving you, people hating you. Absolutely difficult.!!! It is my sincere hope that he is finally getting everything he ever dreamed of. Fame, fortune, love, peace of mind, contentment. I have met him three times. He appears to be a man of honesty, integrity and authenicity! Wishing to you Donny joy and happiness - always !!
not to be offending to donny but in this video i find his face to odd! what happened to his face?? is it the lighting??? again i do not mean harm to donny but i just wonder
It was hard on him, so hard. But in a selfish way, I am so grateful to him for taking that 'road not taken' and being in the spotlight. It was through him and his family that I found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I have been so blessed in SO many ways, because I found the Gospel, and I am not certain that I would have if it had not been for Donny Thank you Donny. You are loved...
as much as i love donny and the rest of the osmonds, i would wish for him to have had an easier and simplier life, even if we all had not known him, because no matter what else he might have done with his life, it would still have been something special.
I think in some small way we all wish we could go back to the sandbox. I just wish it did not have to happen to Donny. He should have had so much more.
My gosh, we did this to him....all the expectiations, he was perfection in our eyes. He's human, nothing more. We had him on such a pedestal and he felt he had to be perfect, for us. The more he lets his guard down, the more real he is. I love you more now, Donny, this moment, than I ever have. I am so sorry...
I am sad to watch this and know what he missed. He is an amazing human being first and also an incredible talent. I wish only the best and most of all peace.
I have loved donny for years. I dont agree with mormonism. to be pefect is doctrin in the ldsfaith. and lots of children donny is so deceived as the whole lot of lds ppl in the world are.
I thought Donny said on another video that he didn't have any regrets re being in the music business all those years? Or was that Marie?
The Osmonds were meant to be a famous, musical family, blessed by God with many talents to be a wonderful, moral family, to set a great example to the world. (Imperfect as they and we all are.) How many young people and families have they influenced over the years for good? Too numerous to mention.
It's sad to learn how much Donny disliked being brought up in the entertainment industry. I have been a professional musician for more than 30 years. I know about the rejection, setting up gear, the physical & emotional demands of working 2-3shows daily, in different locations. They call it playing but, believe me, it's very hard work. I'm not disagreeing with him as to why he (thinks) he would have liked to be just a normal kid but, I just can't imagine a world without The Osmonds in it!
We love you !~!! :)) !!!

B proud of that Donny
no288 1 year ago
Steaing your memories? What about HIS memories? Donny didn't and doesn't owe you anything. He's a human being, and he's entitled to his own happiness. I think it's interesting in light of all that the Osmonds have done and achieved over the years, he says that he and all his siblings would trade that for a normal life. Guess the grass isn't always as green as we might imagine it is on that other side of the fence. I wish him and his family all the best. Love you, Donny!

The best news for Donny is that he need not make any apologies for being Donny Osmond then or now.
I almost feel like we owe him a debt of gratitude and an apology for having endured such a difficult childhood as he saw us through our own.
It's nice to see he's triumphed and turned out to be such a class act.

WOW, STILL a great singer, and person!

many with that success would love to have time for a normal life. But regardless,I'm happy for Donny and the physical and mental strength he had to get through everything I will say...he looks great and healthy even now

We see what it has done to such people as Britney and Michael Jackson.

that was so sad - to learn that he would have swapped it for 'normality'...he has a depth that some of the commentators on here couldn't even understand if they tried. He has been loyal and loved family and sacrificed.
The only thing I'd say is; he still would have had to work very hard in something, and been 'owned' by that work/boss in a way, in order to support his family in a comfortable lifestyle, if he didn't have the money he has made in showbusiness.

(1 of 3) "And this above all to thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to anyone." Yes, this is Shakespeare, from Hamlet, Act I, Scene III. In short, a person must be true to themselves, a person must follow their heart, if they don't I think it can cause irreparable harm.
conyelp 2 years ago
(2 of 3) Donny was forced to do something no "child" should have to do, he had to act like an adult when he was only a child with a child's emotions and makeup. Kids need to have a childhood but he didn't. Children aren't meant to take on "adult" duties and when they do I think it robs them of something they vitally need to become a whole and healthy person. I can understand why parents in the entertainment business don't want their children to follow them into it.
conyelp 2 years ago 3
(3 of 3) It sounds like Donny has been able to take care of himself enough to stay sane. He seems to be more healthy emotionally but I'm sure he has suffered untold agony and pain and he has much trouble holding back the emotion when he thinks about his past. I bet he sure learned some things too and will treat his son differently than he was treated. God bless you Donny and thanks for the wonderful years of entertainment you gave us.
conyelp 2 years ago
Yes, a difficult life indeed. Everything he does is public. His life is an open book for people to comment on. No privacy, people loving you, people hating you. Absolutely difficult.!!! It is my sincere hope that he is finally getting everything he ever dreamed of. Fame, fortune, love, peace of mind, contentment. I have met him three times. He appears to be a man of honesty, integrity and authenicity! Wishing to you Donny joy and happiness - always !!

God bless them.
