  • Plumbers sure have the greatest jobs. All those pipes and taps and ghostly Roman Soldiers....

  • @mindlesspup well, you get to travel from place to place and meet interesting people, i really think its more exciting than clean office jobs.

  • I would really like to ask him whether they were perfectly 100% solid, or diaphanous and ghostly. I'm guessing from his testimony about their facial stubble that they were solid.

  • Maybe it was him smashing through the concretion of the ceiling that disturbed the apparitions... or got the "tape recording"in the stones rolling again?

  • @effyleven Building work often appears to cause the hauntings.

  • If Everything gives off an energy--everything-from humans-to stones, maybe we just 'spin' at different frequencies? Something like a parallel universe--where we go to after our earth life--(or not, b'cos some of them stay on earth-until moved on)--but where's that 'on'? What is it? If it's an Energy Then they've got to be alive in their own 'time & space'-same as we are...haven't they?

  • For truth about religion try Robert M. Price, ' The reason driven life ', Victor J. Stenger, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, PZ Meyers, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Michael Shermer; skeptics society, Peter Atkins, John W. Loftus, Dan Barker, Valerie Tarico, Truth-savescom, skepticsannotatedbible for Koran & Book of Mormon, talkorigins, wisdomcommons, mindvendorcom. 1500BCE papyrus of ani , David Mills, Bart Ehrman, Joseph Wheless

  • This roman soldier story is one of my favorites because it doesn't point towards being ghosts, it's more scientific. The way the nature can record stuff and later replay it or different time periods exists paralell to eachother is fascanating and feels convincingly real.

  • The plumber's experience sounds to me more like psychometry, which is the ability of seeing an event in the past in the place where it occurred or by holding an object related to it. Not all ghost-sighting stories are true, of course, but skeptics have a way of throwing the water with the baby in, which I find annoying. Thanks for sharing the documentary!

  • For the soul there is no birth or death. It is eternal , everlasting, ever-existing, undying and primeval. It does not die when the body dies.

  • Overlapping timelines.. ...

    :-)

  • The spirits of swimmers on the beach when the tsunami hit were still getting into taxis and telling the drivers to go to local addresses because they didn't know they were dead and were trying to get out of this world the only way they knew (but which was unsuccessful but they kept trying)

  • I think they had gone out of their barracks to defend themselves, were slaughtered by their attackers and their spirits not knowing their bodies were dead returned as though they still had life as a complete regiment (as though they had won the combat).

  • From his standpoint , it is called retro cognition. From the other side, the Roman guards , it is precognition. Much like how psychics see the future. Same place , different time as we call it. This world is all about vibration or tuning in.

  • This was one of the first ghost story shows I used to watch and it used to creep me out, even in the middle of the day lol.

  • man, if i could see what he saw, i mean he saw real roman soldiers!!!!

  • Outstanding...keep the truth OUT there!!!

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning, perhaps?

  • @eIectrostatic Most certainly not...this man wasn't familiar with roman armor, weapons etc. etc. it's a pretty classic case of "like a recording" type ghost experience where the romans were walking on their old road now currently below floor level, and were unaware of this man, or the modern surroundings...they were just wearily marching from point A to point B in their past lives and somehow it got recorded and played back when this man was doing his renovating.

  • It's possible that images from the past could transcend through time. There are many things we don't know about. Anything is possible.

  • It's a bit hard to pick him up, because of the reverb boom. But maybe he fell asleep on the job?

If you don't fall into proper sleep, you get lucid dreams about stuff happening in the room with you. You can learn to control them, but they are actually worse than scary if you don't know what's going on.

  • hah...all you movie makers and costume designers pay attention...because this man saw Roman Soldier authenticity by their apparitions...I wouldnt be freaked out..Roman Soldiers are BADASS!!!

  • Heared from a St Johns lecturer in early 70s that he also saw a Roman

  • This is very amazing. It sounds like a residual haunting. I would love to see something of this nature! Even though at the time it would probably scare me half to death! LOL!

  • camera in operation and is fixed on the cellar.Ive been one of the lucky ones to have been in the cellar, its not open to joe public and a bit of cheek to the cafe staff there allowed my family in for a while.Wasnt spooky but I wasnt on my own.

    Very damp in there.

    The Treasurers house York.

  • A perfectly credible and believable witness I feel. The only thing that bothers me though is the enormous amount of detail that Harry remembers about the soldiers costumes, shields, spears, helmets, footwear, type of leather skirts they wore, and even how the horse was kitted out. How would you register this date in a state of terror?

  • I do believe that spirits visit people but this event is probably the stone tape theory that some scientist have mentioned,I wonder if any scientist has tried to recreate the conditions that could have triggered that event in that cellar,It would be amazing to be able to see into the past.

  • @Pawnbroker00 Well you're speaking English right now aren't you? And I would disagree with the Romans being 'good'. Much of what the Romans did derived from the Greeks actually. Also computers were invented by the English Charles Babbage - how are you writing this message now? .

Oh btw Ghost watching I once uploaded these too not knowing you had already done so - because I had the collection of Ghost Hunters (this particular series and not TAPS). Apologies for this.

  • I wonder if the roman soldier said to that guy,If youre not finished by the time we get back ill cut your balls off.

  • @fiesta1100 I think you mean "Si vestri 'non finitur tempore ego interficiam te culiones nos recipere." :P

  • Has anyone had the brains to put camera equipment in these cellars ?

  • he must have been hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

  • i c

  • I love how they say that romans occupied britain. They only maintained a very small presence in the very south part of modern scotland and barely went near wales and cornwall.

  • ''We who about to die Salute you!''

  • the fact that the swords were on right hand side is also distinctive of roman presence as it was unique and it avoided hurting the person on your left while drawing sword togather if it was ..as conventionally sheathed on the left for a right handed person.. :)

  • I remember reading about this incident many years ago. It's wonderful to hear it "from the horse's mouth" decades later. Thank you again for your work, it is a great public service.

    MM

  • Harry the Plumber seems very authentic to me and I am a bit of a cynic. Maybe this is the Stone tape theory in action. eitherway does anyone fancy spending the night in that cellar?

  • this old guy got sceard fell off his ladder and dint hit his ars he hit his head

  • What have the Romans ever done for us?

  • they gave us Architecture, Literature, Aqueducts, The calendar,Education, Cement and bricks, Paved streets and pavements, Roads, Coins, Shops, Parks, Towns, Laws, Public order, Public libraries, Street Cleaners, Firemen and Police, glass and much more so if you ask me quite a lot.

  • Watch Monthy Pythons Life of Brian , especially the bit about "What have the Romans ever done for us" :)

  • Quite right but not to forget mechanical wonders they did with the Coliseum and Building with the first winch

  • @richyloike Romani ite domum!

  • ENGLISH?!!!

  • what he caught was a imprint in ancient time- there is something about his body energy that probably got caught into or hooked onto the energy imprint-thats all it is tho, no real ghosts were there

  • just an attention seeking old man me thinks who read sum books! :O)

  • I've just had a thought; I hate to sound all 'Doctor Who', but which explanation is more plausible: that all these individual soldiers became ghosts and stayed ghosts for two millenia, or are these witnesses experiencing a temporal loop?

Past, present, future--it's a lot more complex and convoluted than we think it is! Have I just gone mad, or has anyone else had similar thoughts? I'd welcome replies to this!

  • I'm kind of surprised to hear this--you'd think after two millenia, the ghosts of Roman soldiers would be relieved from duty by now! That's a LOONNG haunting.

  • Here have roman ruins here in scotland.

  • y did the roman conker britain?

  • The Romans set out to conquer the world for the honor of Rome. Britain was part of their known world at the time and to them it was a simple thing to conquer the British Isles.

  • but y didnt they just leave it alone?

  • Their thinking was to unite the "world"under on flag so to speak and to civilize the "heathens". Basicly it was greed that in part drove Rome and in the end was part of the down fall.

  • o i c. greed? what makes u think that?

  • Most of the conquered lands paid something like a tax or Honor payments to Rome by way of goods and raw materials. X amount went to Rome for the Senators and Caesar and X amount was kept by the people for their winter stores.

  • Why didnt the english leave scotland and wales alone? Why didnt the english leave the indians and africans alone? Seriously, a lot more good stuff was done by the romans than done by english folk. If we look back on it, they basically invented organised society

  • The Romans decided to conquer Britain because

a)Was at the end of the known world, and it being a strongly militarised society it was important for emperors to demonstrate their bellic power

    b) They believed the British were aiding the Gauls during the Gallic wars

c)As it was across the sea, it was also viewed as conquering the oceans

    d) the Romans loved to "civilise" other people and being Celts and harbouring druids, they were considered prime barbarian stock

  • I thought there were other reasons but dang I couldn't think of them. Thanks!

  • What happened to the plumbing. Did he get it sorted. I could do with a new stop cock under the sink.

These tradesmen always have some excuse for stopping the job.

Funny thing though,i was riding my horse around our estate, trying to impail a couple of Gauls, when a plumber came out of the wall, with a length of lead pipe, a phone ,and a bill for 600 quid. I know It's all copper nowadays, but it's cheaper and safer than the old lead.

I felt sorry for my horse ,Quintus . S.P.Q.R.

  • So, did he see ghosts or was he seeing back in time somehow? Very interesting account.

  • Interesting how he describes the soldiers as being small in stature. The people of that time would have been quite a bit smaller than modern people.

  • They look smaller because a roman road is underneath the celler, that's why they only see from the waist up

  • That is a residual haunting, right? Therefore they wouldn't turn to look at him.

I would love to be able to just sit and watch a piece of history like that.

    I think he's very lucky.

  • I lived just round the corner from this spot a while back.

    Excellent city.

  • Back in the 70s a local company I worked for was supplying concrete for a pour to bolster the foundations under York Minster, some of us saw the same vision, with round shields, we were later filmed and interviewed about what we had witnessed.....

  • it may be interesting if they can place a closed circuit camera 24 hours a day/7 days a week to record this just in case this apparition surfaces again.

Apparently, the apparition of these Roman soldiers keeps emerging and several witnesses have testified to have seen it

  • Side to side is Centurion rank. Back to back is Optio rank.

  • I`ve been looking like hell for the Documentary all of my paranormal books have this account in them and ever since i read about it i wanted to see this so thanx for the upload :)

  • ive been there in york

  • wow roman soldiers still rome the earth? wow! you would think that all of them would be on the other side by now!

  • Has anyone ever thought, perhaps Ghosts arnt dead, they are just images we see through time. Example The Soldiers that he saw, were real people in their own time in history, but he saw them in his time, Its hard to explain, but maybe ghosts are created through ripples n time.

  • Yes, time overlapping somehow, Very good comment Finchy.

  • There not just images if they can talk to you, hurt you ect. A image is just a portrayal of something or someone but no mere image can interact with you. I kinda get the whole time overlapping, such as those things known as "Time Slips" when people visit the past I believe you have a video of that in one of your strange but true videos. I haven't had much of a ghost experience myself I believe I seen one once before but it could of just been my mind playing tricks on me.

  • I enjoy reading or watching paranormal things but dislike encountering such things. Once I almost bought a ouija board and I walked up to the counter laid it down to purchase it but all the way as I walked from the shelf to the counter I had a eery feeling that something bad was gonna happen and it was a mistake.

  • @GhostWatching it's called 'residual' haunting - where it's like a visual and/or audio tape running itself over again. You can tell because the apparitions are not aware of your presence.

  • @Finchy000 That's the theory that I find most appealing.

  • @Finchy000 I would personally think it is an imprint in the land, you know, if it meant so much to a certain person, they would impart their memories to it.. like roman units still marching the land

  • @Finchy000 I think the same.

  • @Finchy000 I have often wondered if perhaps these ghostly images are really still happening in real time only in a different dimension that sometimes overlaps with our own.

  • @Finchy000 very very interesting !!!! thx for comment

  • @Finchy000 It would make sense to why some areas are more prominant with ghosts and others aren't. Perhaps these ripples are similar to Black holes or Worm Holes in space

  • @Finchy000 The concept of "the ghosts arent dead" is what quantum physics is all about...

  • @Finchy000 i have thought the very same thing, maybe if one of the romans looked to his right then maybe he would have seen the curator to

  • @painsey I Doubt it... they didn't even see the modern earth and floor around their feet and legs...or the modern wall they walked through...it appears the image translation only goes one direction. We can see them but they can't see us.

  • @Finchy000 very interesting comment

  • @Finchy000 Woot Doctor Who/Torchwood! :P

  • @Finchy000 oh yeah i totally agree.. which makes you wonder- are you and i ghosts to someone in the future? or past???

though a ripple in time could explain ghosts, but what about those accounts when the 'ghost' is interacting with the person ? thats always weird. hmmmm

  • @Finchy000 - Considering Time as a continuous string of events and Space as an anchor found in a Place, Time would wrap around the Space much like a rug, rolled up. One Space (the center of the roll) becomes the location for events that happen at different Times, in that Space. Time is then like the layers of rug that can be seen thru when looking at the center. Characters involved in earlier actions cannot see later actions, because they ARE the center and later events haven't happened yet.

  • Cool about Roman Soldiers

  • What a bummer- to have to haunt some dude's cellar for all time :(

  • it could be more like, a fold in a parrallel universe...

  • either way...i would still shit bricks....

  • I remember this as a youngster in the early 70s being featured on that dreadful early evening programme Nationwide-plus sure it was featured on childrens series Blue Peter as well-but hearing this first hand gives me goose bumps.

Maybe this gent has the ability to sense/receive images/energies from the past-conceivably from within the brickwork itself...very,very interesting!!

  • he saw the auxilia coming back from the battle of watling street well actually it was a masseacre

  • Living in Darlington just an hour up the road from York I've heard about the residual hauntings from the Roman fort and was fascinated to watch account of one of the sightings. For the skeptics out there this poor plumber was not the first nor last to witness such a sight.

  • i think just as some people can see the future some people can see the passed..they may not be ghosts just a vision of the past...everyone has some form of 6th sense some people just stronger than others..thats what i think..in this case anyway

  • finally an intelligent human who knows the truth

  • aww thankyou!

  • Really interesting! I wish I could experience something like that. Every time I visit an ancient Roman site or ruin, I try to visualize the place with ordinary people going about their business. How much more useful would it be to see them as apparitions like the man in the video?!

  • I don't know, it's hard for me to swallow this. 20 full aparitions? And a horse? AND music? Yeah. Not sure about that...

  • Very interesting. I really like that he could see the horses too.

  • It is amazing that this man could get such detail while watching these ghosts march by. I would of been too busy clutching my chest, and bawling like a baby!

  • this is great - this story has become a bit of a classic hasn't it, but here's the actual man who experienced it.
